Pros:

Airborn DG Hollows is just Visionquest. It's a pretty run down, shell of it's former self version of VQ, but it's still Visionquest. All the tee signs, benches and even the sign at the entrance all back this up. If anything this review will serve as an update on the current conditions and layout more than anything.

The baskets, while listed as Prodigy T1's on Udisc, are actually a mixed bag here. There's 13 red Arroyo baskets, aka the original baskets on the property. These are actually really great baskets and all of them are still in pretty solid shape and catch perfectly. The bright red sticks out nicely as well. Hole 17 appeared to be a Discatcher or something. I think that's what it was. Either way it caught fine and was painted gold for some reason. The other four are actually Prodigy's. These are on holes 1,2,4 and 18. Two black ones, an orange and a green one. These are nice and catch fine too. One basket and pin placement per hole.

The flow of the course is pretty easy to follow. It'd be hard to get lost out here even if you've never been here before. The design is well done. I mean, it's why VQ was such a popular course a few years ago. Well it's still essentially that same design, just tamed a bit.

The tee pads are turf. These are all different sizes depending on what tee the current layout is using. It's basically a mix of the old long and middle tees, with most being the red (middle) tees. A few of them use the black (long) tees. There's three holes that utilize two tees. These are holes 3,5 and 15. These holes all use the shorter blue tees I believe. Most of the tees are still in decent shape actually.

The tee signs are the same old VQ ones. Most still apply since it's the same layout. A couple have some new info sharpied onto them. Effective enough still.

There's some elevation and water involved out here which is nice. Hole 3 still has the hanging basket with the pond in the middle of the fairway and 15 has the water carry over the corner of the main pond in the middle of the property. The middle section is just some fun wooded golf with the iconic elevated basket on hole 9 still being the highlight, or at least signature, hole on this section.

Cons:

It's a shame that they don't have more tee locations. There used to be three on most of the holes. Now 15 of the 18 only have one. Really doesn't cater to newer players and is not going to be as exciting for the bigger arms either. At least most of the tees are the mids, which suits the majority of players who'd be visiting here.

Lots of the old baskets, while still in great shape, are no longer mounted level. This includes the elevated hole 9 even. You'd think an esteemed designer like Cale would at least have the pins leveled out before opening.

A few of the tee pads are in rough shape with the turf peeling off. Hole 9's frame is basically shot and is like walking on a trampoline.

Hole 18's basket is in a gazebo for some reason. Very gimmicky way to end your round. Wasn't a fan of this change. Speaking of changes, this was the only hole that actually changed as far as I could tell. And it's not an improvement on the original. Though the original was also pretty gimmicky, at least the basket wasn't in a gazebo.

$5/person to play. This is cheaper than it was when I played here back in 2017. Half the price actually. But you're also getting a broken down, honestly sad, version of the course. There's random junk all over the place out here. It's lost all of the charm that made this course a top ten level contendor less than ten years ago.

Other Thoughts:

It was good to get back out and revisit this layout while it's still around. One more time at least. From what I've heard this isn't going to around that long. Sounds like next year may be the last, so if you've been wanting to play this layout I'd try to do so before the end of 2024. It may not be true, but if it is the time is limited.

The course itself is still really good and certainly worth the price of admission. Just don't expect it look, or even play, like it did in it's heyday. On one hand I appreciate Cale resurrecting this once proud course. On the other it almost seems like a cash grab. I doubt I'll be back again, but it was good to get to visit one last time.
