Alexander Park is Another Solid But Not Spectacular Atlanta Offering! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 3, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

PARK DESCRIPTION - Large popular 91-acre park that is extremely busy with the walking/jogging crowd. I parked by the dog park and had a long walk to the starting area. Park features a large, rolling grassy area with scattered trees, dog park, water park, ball fields, lake, picnic areas and more.

VARIETY - Nice combination of open, park like holes and tighter wooded holes. Many holes either play out of the woods or have you throwing back into the same woods.

CHALLENGE - Recreational level from the Short Red tees up to intermediate level when you play from the Long Blues. I wish they had kept with the Long Blues and Short Whites that every other Atlanta area course has seemed to use.

EQUIPMENT - Kiosk at start with course map. Nice large trapezoid tee pads. The tee signs are the same metal, colored ones with hole map that most of the courses around here have. The same pin position with clips which works so well and is quite clear. Lots of benches. Lots of trash cans. The same basic Discatchers with the yellow bands and #'s which show up so well in the woods.

AESTHETICS - This seems to be one of Alexander's strengths that being the extreme cleanliness of the park and the care the course receives. Someone works hard to keep this course immaculate. Some nice extra touches like the nicely, landscaped tee box on # 3. And once again, an Atlanta area course with not one hint of any vandalism.

FUN FACTOR - A previous reviewer mentioned that he probably would have enjoyed this course more if had played it 10 years ago. I see his point and am in complete agreement. As far as personal enjoyment, I really prefer all the wonderful hilly 18's that I've played recently. For me, Alexander compares a lot with Central Park up in Cumming.

ROUTING/NAVIGATION - Course starts and finishes at the kiosk staging area. With the help of the next tee signs and basically just following other golfers the navigation was intuitive and pretty straight forward.

OTHER THOUGHTS - # 17 is probably the most interesting hole here. The murky lake on the left is quite intimidating as the window you throwing to isn't all that wide. Then a slightly uphill second shot is needed for that birdie opportunity.

Cons:

The approach area on # 17 is becoming quite bare and eroded. This area could really use a load of woodchips.

The popularity of the park seems to be one of its greater cons. There was a steady stream of walkers/joggers on the path but they never seemed to be of any concern and on my round, I never saw anyone other than disc golfers out on the course itself.

The lack of elevation combined with a certain "sameness" feel of many holes kind of left me wanting for more. More variety, more of that "it" factor that Little Mulberry has.

Other Thoughts:

Some areas seem to be known for a certain type of courses. The Chicago area is well known for its preponderance of flat, nine-hole rec courses. The Charlotte area is known for its tough advanced level courses like Nevin, Hornet's Nest, Renny Gold and more.

After playing courses around Atlanta, I'm thinking Atlanta has a large grouping of fun, 18's that are tweeners, that is, they're more challenging than a recreational level but fall short of being called intermediate level. Courses I would include in this tweener 18 category would include; Frog Rock, Oregon Park, East Roswell, Wills Park, Suwanee Creek, Little Mulberry, Fort Yarbo, Mathews, Rosewood- DeKalb which is at the lower rec level, Deer Lick and many others I haven't had the pleasure of playing.

I believe I can include Alexander Park DGC in this group. It's a really nice 18 which I can't classify as a rec course but yet I don't think is ranks as an intermediate one either.

Solid Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 30, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Located in a busy park it has everything you need to put together a decent course, elevation changes, multiple pads & pin placements, a mix of open & wooded holes, etc. A few holes have trees acting as gates or goal posts you need to throw thru to get to a more open area, which is a nice touch.

The course is well maintained even for how busy it is, with no trash & signs that limbs, fallen trees, and other debris get removed for the most part.

Besides the water hazard on 17, you're not likely to lose a disc here unless you're well off the fairway or overshoot the basket.

Cons:

The popularity of the park and the course are the biggest cons really. Any day or time I've played there have been players and other park goers randomly wandering around the fairways. I'll usually see people picnicking on the sides of fairways or setting up canopies in the middle & they don't seem to care about the courtesy or the danger, even when its explained to them.

Because its a busy course, give yourself some extra time to play it, with waiting for others to be finished or park goers to get out of the way.

Other than that its a serviceable course, no holes are really great but no holes are really bad either. A few baskets & signs could be maintained better with rusty chains or other cosmetic issues, but overall its not bad.

Other Thoughts:

To me this is a course that if someone wanted to play it, I wouldn't say no, it just wouldn't be my top choice. Compared to others in the area its a decent course, just nothing really memorable about it.

Alexander The "Not Quite" Great 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 13, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Alexander's higher rating is probably a result of it being a crowd pleaser. There is a good variety of holes and none of them are too difficult. I saw many people playing the course and they seemed to be having a great time. Most holes here I would say are "goodish" and do require a variety of throws whether you play the short pads or the longs.

-Most holes have two or three pin locations. I actually spoke with the guy that moves them and it seems that he moves them at least every now and then.

-The usual. Great tee signs. Superb tee pads.

-The conditions were excellent. Course looked fantastic in regards to appearance. Alexander seems to be a course that's always kept in high quality shape. Nothing dense, messy, or overgrown.

-Nice retention wall separating #8 from #9's tee area. Holes are very close but safety seems to be a priority.

-Hole #13 was my favorite hole. Nice tight and slightly wooded downhill par three. Many trees in the middle of the fairway creating two challenging available lanes. #17 was a cool par four around the pond. Your drive has to be deceptively further than it would appear on the tee. I lost a gladiator in the water because it turned too quickly and didn't go far enough.

-Two nine hole loops. #1 and #9 end in a circle and #10 and #18 end in a circle right next to the circle that #1-9 creates.

Cons:

-Lacks Originality. Many open holes without much character. Only hole you might wake up the day saying "That was really a great hole" would be hole #13. Most of them were just pretty good without leaving me intrigued. Flawed marketing approach. Excellent presentation, decent design.

-A bit of a walk from the parking lot to the disc golf course. Not very far, but you won't see it from where you park. Walk past the ball field down the walking path and you'll see it. Leaves you with a bit of a walk back to the parking lot after #18.

-I spoke to the guy that moves the baskets and he said something about the parks and rec department not liking it when he moves the baskets. Seems like they are making it more difficult than it needs to be. I think it's very important for pins to be moved in their different locations to keep the course interesting.

-#17's pond is a disc eater. Not only is the "no wading" sign an inconvenience, but the tee shot is very misleading. I lost a gladiator in the pond. There was a huge headwind that compelled me to throw a very overstable disc and it looked like it was going to go far enough past the pond, but the wind made a severe hook with my disc's flight and now it's lost because it landed in the water. I threw a boatman the second round and barely made it across when it looked like it was going to go further. Deceptive in a very aggravating way.

Other Thoughts:

-Alexander is a course that I probably would've enjoyed more if I played it six or seven years ago. I've played over 200 courses and have played some epic courses pretty far away that I wouldn't hesitate to go back to. Alexander is pretty unadorned and relatively pedestrian, even though its presentation is a high. Just goes to show that presentation is more of an extra. It doesn't seem that the whole "make a valid point" motive was present here. It has some pretty good holes but I thought it was going to be better. Elevation is present but limited. That's fine; I've played courses with more limited elevation that had some real standout holes.

-If you are looking for a course that would well suit a crowd, then Alexander would probably bring the best results. It's very fair with lots of forgiveness and some separator potential. The first two are very open and offer the most forgiveness by not imposing a penalty after a subpar tee shot and some players could really appreciate that whole concept. Experienced players will more likely be indifferent about Alexander if they are under the age of fifty. I think this is a real demographic course. If you are the age of 18-24, or 25-35 and over 920 rated, you'll probably prefer to play Little Mulberry, Parker's Pasture, or Indian Creek. It's worth a go to though.

-I'm giving Alexander a 3. Just know though, this is solely my perception. I like to heavily lean towards my personal opinion and what I think about the holes rather than presentation even though it's important to acknowledge it and allow it to have some sort of impact.

Balanced Park Course, Great for Learning 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 16, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

My first home course: a well-groomed park course with all the basics and good variety.

-Amenities: I got a bit spoiled learning the sport at Alexander. 36 concrete tees, 19 DISCatchers (one is a practice basket), tee signs with map and pin position indicator, copious benches, trash cans, next tee signs.

-Multi-Tees/Pins: Two tees per hole. I'd label them red-level and white-level difficulty. Also, most holes have 2-3 pin positions that get changed regularly, which really freshens up the course.

-Variety: There's a very balanced mix of open, moderately open, and wooded holes. Also a wide swath of distances, from about 180' to 590'. Elevation isn't extreme on any one hole, but there are plenty of substantial downhills and uphills.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: A great intermediate challenge. A handful of open field holes with well-placed trees and elevation, several shorter tight woods shot that require technicality, and, depending on pin placements, one to four par-4's working into or out of the woods. There are many ace runs (I would nominate the 280' field (1) and short bend right (8)), some tough rough (if you drive poorly on (5) or (14)), and great placement shots (for long positions on (3), (13), and (17)). A very fair teacher of risk, reward, needle-threading, bombing, and wind and elevation management.

-Surrounding Park: It's in the middle of suburbia, but Alexander isn't an eyesore. Rolling hills and woods make it enjoyable, especially at sunset. The park has miles of walking trails, a playground, a dog park, and much more if you want to make it a family excursion.

Cons:

The park gets a little too much traffic, and lacks the appeal to make it a top-level course.

-Busyness: This is one of the most-used parks I have been to in the city. There are usually a couple or more groups of disc golfers, and the trails are packed with walkers and joggers. Other than having to wait on larger groups to throw sometimes, this is an issue mainly because a lot of people think the open fairways are a great place to picnic/play catch/walk the dog/make out. Often they're willing to move, sometimes they're not--but do you really want to be the person walking 300' down the fairway to tell the family they need to move the picnic so you can play the hole in 5 minutes?

-Openness: There are a lot of holes that are quite open. That was nice as a beginner, but nowadays I tend to feel a little bored by the time I've played (1), (2), (7), (9), (16), and (18) that all throw through the same big meadow.

-Limitation of Variety: (3) and (17) are great par-4s, with (16) and (18) both acceptable, but otherwise no multi-shot holes to make this a true top-notch course.

-Pond: I know many discs that have found a watery grave on (17). A year ago they posted a "No Wading" sign to dissuade retrieval.

Other Thoughts:

I guess it's probably always hard to rate a home course objectively. At one point I had Alexander as a 3.5 due to its biome variety, but in the last while I've come to regard it as a 3.0, a Good course that does everything right but simply lacks the higher levels of interest. Great park to learn on, always feels safe, has great recreational to intermediate variety, and the pin positions change constantly. An excellent home course to learn and practice on, and worth a quick stop on the road.

-Highlight Holes: I couldn't just review my OG home course without sharing some of my favorite holes. Skip this paragraph if you're not interested. (3) in the two long positions is a great par-4 with 230' of trees on the right that you want to throw to the left of and around to set up the approach through a woods tunnel. (5) starts in the open but hits a tight gap into the woods, with different pin positions requiring different levels of right turn but allowing for an ace run. (8) is the best ace run, a 180' right-turning downhill hole that requires great touch on the forehand or backhand. (13) long is a great choice: downhill bomb 330' while working around 3 mid-fairway trees and finishing right, or lay-up to the right to a straight tunnel and trust your approach touch for a difficult par-3. (17) long is another par-4 with a 300' straight shot (pond on the left) leading to a wide and straight tunnel with a sloped green filtering away from the basket.

Decent course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 26, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a solid beginner/intermediate course. There is a good variety of hole types (open, trees) and terrain (flat, sloped). Many of the holes are fairly short (under 250ft) from the long tee positions. All the holes except one (#8) have multiple pin positions (as many as 3). The tee pads are nice, but the shorter tees are much smaller. There is a huge parking lot.

Cons:

This course favors right-handers, though pin positions have been added to offset this reality. Some areas are close to walking paths. I've actually had pedestrians try to walk off with my disc! Have lost discs in the pond on #17 and found them at Play It Again Sports... person(s) unknown seem to frequent it to sell discs. Seldom had lost disc returned at this course. Restrooms are not close. No water fountain. Can get very crowded at times.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, the designers made the best with what they had to work with... this is a relatively small course, but they still managed to pack in longer holes (500+ft) in limited space. The layout is fairly intuitive and marked well. There are a couple of spots where tees and flight paths from different holes are close together. There are some landing zones close to the next tee, so extra care is needed. This is my home course and I play it 2-3 times a week.

Not bad. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are quite a few things here they do right, such as having nice teepads, rotating pin positions, being far away from the other activities in the park, having multiple tees, and having very nice teesigns.

The course was pretty well manicured when I played, nice short grass,I could definitely see someone who likes rollers having a good time here.

Cons:

The big con here for me is lack of hole shapes, this is a pretty open course, not a ton of variety, and if you play this in the summer,it gets hot walking across that big field all the time, real, real hot.

Other Thoughts:

There's not really many obstacles out here, but a few of the holes are pinned in some trees, and a few are truly wooded, but it's more open than anything, but don't let that stop you from having a good time.

This was the 4th round I had played that day,4th new course, played with BnC,we had a great time, and I would definitely come back and play this course again if I was in the area.

This isn't a destination course, and I do think it's a bit overrated, but if you are in the area, definitely make sure to check it out.

Nice, but Busy! 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Nice layout. Like the Wooded Courses. Nothing more gratifying than taking your wood driver out and breaking it in. Nice facilities. GDGO is really woking hard to keep this course nice. Lots of mixed shots. Some short and long holes keep it interesting instead of having to dig my driver out all the time.

Not fully broken in yet so get your scores low while you can.

Score cards are provided!

Cons:

People jumping around. The young'ins like to skip holes to circumvent the old and new guys. Really gets frustrating.

Way too crowded on weekends. Be prepared to wait. Alexander services all of Gwinnett in a central location so a lot of us from outside of the county travel to Alexander.

Poison Ivy starting to grow in. I got hit by it so watch out

Other Thoughts:

Great course, but can get busy on the weekends. A nice touch for newbies like myself to test my technical shots.

Watch out for the disc magnet on 17 (the pond) Havent put one in yet.

As a Newbie 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 17, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

In my opinion this course offers a little something for everyone. Half the course is open fairways to rip and the other half you are either throwing into the woods or out of the woods. It's just challenging enough to keep beginners interested or not discouraged and advanced players from getting bored.

Cons:

There is only one entrance to the park off of Old Snellville Hwy with no signs directing you to the back sand lot for parking. If you do like did and park in the paved lot, there is an extremely long walk to the first tee.

Other Thoughts:

The park is crazy on the weekends, but if you find yourself lucky enough get out there in the mornings most any day of the week, you can have a relaxing and enjoyable round.

Nice New Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 27, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a very good course for beginners and intermediate players. Lots of shorter holes and mix of wooded /open holes. One huge bonus is the best "bricks and mortar" disc golf store I've ever seen around the corner ("Discstalker"). Hundreds and hundreds of discs and they even rent them. Sweet!

Two sets of concrete tee pads, alternate tee placements, a nice practice tee setup and a little separation from the rest of the park are very nice touches. Somebody (probably a LOT of people) have done a very nice job of installing and maintaining this course

Cons:

Very "new" park. Open holes have been placed on graded land so it will take a few years for the course to grow in. Gwinnett Co. traffic is terrible so I'll be limited to weekend mornings.

Course is likely too tame for Pros and experienced Ams.

Other Thoughts:

This course is great for practice. Work on your drives, approach shots, putting and wooded path throws. It's been windy when I played and you really get to test up/down/cross wind approaches and putts.

Really fun to play in the Fall/Winter when the leaves are down.

Fungus-like course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 7, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has really grown on me over the last few months. The first four or so times I played here, I was new to the technical side of disc golfing and was greatly discouraged when I kept nailing trees with my discs. However, my game has improved and I've begun to like Alexander.

This course has a good variety of open and wooded holes, so you'll have plenty of opportunities for both bombs and tight, technical shots.

The course is well laid out and easy to navigate. It also has plenty of benches and trash cans.

Cons:

One thing I really don't like about this course is all the wood chips in the wooded fairways. Instead of skipping, sometimes your disc will just slam into large wood chunks and stop.

The only other con I can think of is that the course is sometimes quite crowded, which at times will have you waiting at every hole.

Other Thoughts:

The area around the pond used to be very messy due to overflow from all the rain we got over the winter. That has been fixed, for the most part, by some recent work on a overflow outlet on the back side of the pond. However, it can still get pretty messy if there has been rainfall in the previous few days.

If you have not put your name and number on your discs, do so before playing this course. There are a few people who regularly collect discs out of the pond. If you have your number on your lost disc, they will call you and try to return it to you. Depending on who it is, they may charge you a small recovery/cleaning fee.

*Nice new tee signs
*Nice new innova baskets
*Course is separate from other park activities
*Generally had signs pointing to the next tee if it was not obvious.
*Nice practice basket and markers

Cons:

*No truly memorable holes
*Most of the holes played similarly(short and straight)
*Lack of trash cans(trash was lying around on the ground)
*Open holes contain absolutely no obstacles(this should change as newly planted trees mature)
*No restrooms or water anywhere near the course.

Other Thoughts:

This course had a mixture of open and wooded holes. The problem for me was that the wooded holes were all worse than holes at nearby wooded courses(Redan,East Roswell, and even Victor Lord), and the open holes were all worse than open holes that you can find at Lenora or Redan.

edit: This course has really been improved by the installation of the gravel parking lot.I also love the new practice basket with distance markers.

A mix of Lenora & Redan 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This new disc golf course in Gwinnett county features two concrete tee pads per hole. There is also good signage on the blue tee pads detailing length and good signage detailing where the next hole is located. The course provides a good variety of wood and open shots with defined fairways. All the pads and Discatchers are level which a huge deal for me. I never like having to run up on a pad that is like a ramp. Hole 17 is the signature hole in my opinion as it puts good use of a pond and tree line.

Cons:

There is no parking anywhere close to the course. You could park on the road next to hole five but I wouldn't suggest it. No trashcans on the course at all. Long holes in the open and short holes in the woods which doesn't provide much of a challenge. In fact I find myself throwing a Roc or even a putter on most of the woods holes. Watch out for ticks as well.

Other Thoughts:

Alexander Park is a good mix of Lenora & Redan but that is about it. It provides the usual windy conditions that Lenora gives you with a bit of tough wood shots that Redan provides. Even though it does provide a good mix the fact that the parking lot is so far away is pain. While I don't mind walking several miles while playing a round I do mind that my truck is far away which contains reserve water/food. Hosting a tournament at this course would also be difficult as there is a good meeting place in close proximity to the course.

Average at best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Concrete tees. Always a plus for me.

-Course is easy to follow. I had no problem finding the next tee.

-Good use of provided land. It looks like the designers did the best they could in a pretty limited space.

-Everything is new. From baskets to benches its all in good shape. I'm guessing that there are nice new bathrooms near the main building as well.

-Multiple tees and pins. Should provide some variety for locals.

-Future planning. The course is mostly wide open, so the designers planted quite a few trees. This will help to improve the quality of play in years to come.

Cons:

-Hole 1 does not start and hole 18 does not end anywhere near the parking area.

-Holes get repetitive. On just about every hole you throw straight. No forced hyzers or anhyzers, just the same shot at a diffrent distance every time.

-There are 3 holes over 400 ( there is possibly a pin spot on 17 that might be over 400' as well, but im not sure on that one) but other then that this course is very short. Most holes that are in the 300' range are downhill, making them roc shots. Skilled players should expect to shoot in the mid 40's.

-I would like to see some trash cans around the teepads.More of a pet peeve of mine rather then a con though.

-Not much challenge here in general. A windy day could provide some challenge, but thats about it. New and short armed players will say its a bombers course, but its not. Its a typical "park course" that everyone has played somewhere before.

-Bugs. I hate them. Found 2 ticks on me when I played, and there were lots of flying things.Bring some spray.

Other Thoughts:

The best thing about this course is the location. Up until now the golfers in the n. gwinnet area(there are a ton of them) had to go all the way to erp or redan or lenora to play, now they have something close.

Unfortunately, the exictement of a new course had brought a rash of overrating to not only this site, but to the entire atl community. I read on our local site that this was a "championship caliber" course. Other reviewers here have given 4 and 4 1/2 star ratings. This is ridiculous. To be honest the main reason I gave this course a 3 is because I didnt want my message box filled with complaining from locals after I gave it a lower score.

If you are in the gwinnet area for some reason its worth checking out, but I wouldn't make special plans to travel here or anything.Like I said this course is average at best.
