Alexander Park: My Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Alexander Park is great due to how it is always well kept. It has a decent variety of open, wooded, and mixed holes. The longer holes tend to be more open while the shorter holes have tighter fairways. There are some slight elevation changes to make it harder and the wind can be a little swirly so sometimes a hole might have tail wind and sometimes head wind. Some holes like 3, 5, and 13 have such different basket placements that make the hole either really easy or extremely difficult. Every hole is gettable with a 350' max throw but no hole is guaranteed. Alexander park rewards accuracy (mainly straight shots) and moderate distance 350'+. Although, you could technically still shoot well with accuracy and only 280'-300' of power. Alexander Park also has a nice mix of par 4s. Alexander Park is also beautiful, especially while walking to tee off on hole 1.

Cons:

Alexander has a great variety but if I were to be nitpicky, I think it is missing two types of holes.

While there is a variety of left, right, and straight finishing holes, there are no extreme doglegs. There are some short fast turning holes like 8 or 12 (in the far right position) but nothing where you would need an overstable driver or skip shot type hole.

There are no wide open long par 4s from the tee. In order to make the holes more challenging 16 and 18 both throw out of the woods and 3 has a line of trees to the right. All four par 4 holes are more about placement shots off the tee vs pure distance. While this makes the course harder, I think having one hole be about distance would be nice.

A lot of pedestrian traffic but worth it if it means the course stays so well maintained.

Other Thoughts:

After having played better designed but not as well maintained courses, I have determined course maintenance is more important to me than design. Especially when it comes to a home course. Alexander is one of the best courses I could ask for as a home course, due to the stellar maintenance and variety of shots it offers. As a side note, if the walk to hole 1 is too far, park at the scenic highway entrance and start at 17. You will finish at 16 and be right next to where you parked.

Alexander the Great? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Couldn't help but notice this course hasn't had a recent comprehensive review in years, and since I cut my DG teeth on it, I thought I'd take the time....

Alexander Park has indeed grown up in the last 10 years to mature Into a solid course that provides a fair challenge to golfers of all types. There are two park entrances now (Scenic Hwy and Old Snellville Rd), more parking, and plenty of amenities. Bathrooms, Blue And Red concrete tee pads, accurate tee signs, benches, next tee signs, garbage cans, even brooms.... Most importantly the course has excellent variety, with open and wooded shot opportunities aplenty, good use of elevation, both ace runs and bomber fairways, left and right shot-shaping variety, and multiple pin placements to keep things fresh. Beginners to Advanced players can enjoy the course together, and the Saturday random draw doubles scene is well-attended.

Losing a disc is hard to do except in a couple places (like the pond on 17), the setting is very park-like and laid back, and course navigation is a breeze.

Cons:

The course can get crowded, and not everyone knows how to let others play through. And in a couple places (like the tee boxes on 3, 8, and 12), a little more protection from other holes' errant tee shots would be nice.

Other Thoughts:

Some really accomplished and/or up-and coming pros have spent a lot of time at Alexander Park, for whatever that's worth. Come on Saturdays at 10am, and you might even partner with one!

Make sure you ignore the hole pictures here at DGCR. All those "Charlie Brown X-Mas trees" have been growing for 10 years now, and present much more significant obstacles today than what existed then. Maybe some nice local could even have DGCR updated?

Lastly, additional (third) pin placements exist for holes 3, 5, 10, 13, 16, and 17, all in longer / better protected locations. Enjoy!

Best Park for every kind of player! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 22, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great course and easy to follow. The flow was perfect and even though it was full of people it went very well. Clean park with great thought and lots of work put into every tee. Lines are quite creative and challenging. Elevation use was awesome but attainable. Lastly, the mix of open and technical shots make it easy to fall in love with!

Cons:

Only con is you have to drive by an amazing playground so cover your kids eyes if they are joining you.

Alexander Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 23, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Has practice basket

Has concrete tee pads for both tees

Has nice tee signs with most indicating basket placements

Multiple basket placements on every hole

Has many benches and trash cans throughout course

More open than wooded fairways will be appreciated by the beginner

Most holes have changes in elevations

Well-maintained

Free parking

Cons:

Hole #12 blue tee could use some protection from drives on Hole #18 blue tee like #9 has from #8

Course design and flow could use improvement as there are awkward transitions between holes 6&7 and 17&18

Course can get crowded at times as it's popular with the locals

Other Thoughts:

This is a good multi-use course that I enjoy playing. The walking path that meanders throughout the course doesn't affect play at all but it's not uncommon for parkgoers to walk through on some of the fairways to access the path. The course is mostly wide open so you can expect wind to be a factor on most holes on any given day here.

Simply Great Disc Golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 20, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Great mix of open and wooded holes.
- Great mix of long and short holes.
- A great course for experienced players, and beginners.
- Great signage, and easy to find the next holes.
- Kept up well. Course is mowed several times a week.

Cons:

- Very busy park, playing with a group is more fun here. Playing by yourself can be very frustrating because you can wait for a long time before each hole.
- The county hosts many events at Alexander, which clogs the parking lots.

Other Thoughts:

Solid course. Proud to call this one my home course. I try to play here at least once a week. I learn something each and every time I play here!

Well Maintained Course, Avg Difficulty 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

One of the best maintained courses I have ever played. All of the holes have markers, and most direct you to the next tee very clearly. All holes have two tees, which is great when playing with a mixed group. Great course for beginner or intermediate players.

Cons:

Many holes are fairly straight shots in open fields. Course could use a little more variety, and a few more barrier trees, etc. to challenge players. I enjoy the course every time I play it, but don't often feel challenged by it.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 14, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-The course is very diverse and offers every types of shot you could want short of over a body of water. It has uphills, downhills, wooded, wide open, just a great selection of holes.
-Multiple tee pads make this course beginner friendly if you're trying to get a friend into the game that hasn't played before.
-Multiple pin placements help keep the holes fresh. If I remember correctly every hole has 3 different pin positions and all of them are interesting for that particular hole.
-The park is very clean and well maintained. There are plenty of trash cans and this course even has a broom at every hole if the tee box is too dirty for you
-The course is well cleared out on it's wooded holes. This means clear lines that are manageable and take luck out of the equation. Also means less chances to lose a disc.

Cons:

-Traffic can be very heavy at times. There have been multiple times where I've found myself waiting behind groups of people

Other Thoughts:

I see this course hasn't gotten great ratings from everybody but to me this is exactly what I want in a disc golf course. The course has nearly every shot, other than directly over water, and is very friendly to both beginners in veterans. I wish I still lived in the area as I loved coming to this course and I strongly suggest anyone around to give it a try. Also, just around the corner from the park is Disc Stalker, which is a a disc golf pro shop, and they have a great selection of plastic so if you need anything new you can stop by there on your way to the course. Overall just a great setup in my opinion.

Just as pretty as she plays. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- This course is gorgeous, and well-maintained.

- A great mix of wooded holes, long, wide-open bomber holes, and traditional holes with a few trees out in the fairway.

- Great tee-pads, with brooms.

Cons:

- Baskets can be a little confusing the first time you play out here, particularly around 3 & 4, and then again around 6 & 7.

- In certain positions, the baskets will be blind from the tee. While this is not a problem at all courses, Alexander's alternate tees on some of the blind holes make a dramatic difference in which route to take. Just be sure to take note of basket positions before heading into the deeper parts of the woods.

- Course can become extremely busy at times, and I've had to play behind 6-somes more than once.

Beautiful Recreational Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 19, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a great course for recreational players, although advanced amateurs and pros might get bored with large number of open shots.

There are concrete tee boxes on every hole for both short and long tees. Brooms at most holes to sweep off the concrete. Benches near most tees. All holes clearly marked with distances and hole map. Course is well-manicured, mowed. The course is mostly wide open holes, with a few holes that either start or end in the wooded section. Wooded holes are partially cleared around baskets and tees. Nice elevation changes with both uphill and downhill shots. Baskets are numbered. Only one water hazard (hole #17) where you could lose a disc.

For me, the open holes give you a chance to warm up (holes 1-3), and then give you a break from some of the wooded holes, so I personally liked the mix of open and wooded. A couple of the wooded holes had some dense trees to shoot through, but nothing insurmountable, as the holes usually opened up after the tight squeeze.

Cons:

There are lots of open holes. None of the holes were absurdly challenging.

Also, I was a little confused at hole #3 because it appears to aim at the hole #4 basket. So if it is your first time, print a course map.

Parking areas are a bit of a walking distance from tee #1, especially if you park at the main park entrance. (overflow parking is closest to the course hole #1)

Other Thoughts:

As a recreational level player, this course was fun and non-intimidating. I very much enjoyed it. While this is an easier course, I rate it among my favorites because the landscape is beautiful with a combination of trees and rolling meadows.

Near-flawless family par 3 course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very family friendly, even stroller friendly
Attractive park that is clearly well maintained, excellent tee signs with a broom at every tee. Discatchers are in nice shape, benches at some of the tees. 2 tee pads and multiple pin locations. There are several ace runs, but they are not just 80 feet and open, these are ace runs with character.
Elevation in play on more than half of the holes.
Nice playground on site.
Great place to learn, introduce new people, and practice hitting lines.

Cons:

Tough to find many cons. Hole 3 aims directly at 4's basket and is confusing.
16 and 17's fairway were parallel. My disc went into one fairway while his disc went into mine. Course is pretty short with an average of 237/305 feet per hole. Typical par 3 layout, because it is so nice and popular, it can get crowded.

Other Thoughts:

Disc Stalker Pro shop just a block from the course!
Course is a near flawless family friendly course, but if you want isolation or more challenge, this is not the course for you.

Awesome course, gorgeous park. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course set in the perfect scenic park. Something for everyone with all sorts of family friendly amnenties for all ages. The wife and kids can easily be entertained while you sneak in a round at this course if they are not into disc golf as much.

- Course utilizes the land very well with a great balance of shots in the open as well as in the woods.

- Great job on the safety factor on most of the wooden holes. Despite having busy pedestrian paths flowing throughout the hilly wooded terrain, I cannot recall an instance where I felt as though anyone was in the way of any shot I needed to take.

- Excellent use of elevation and technical lines to throw, particularly when teeing off from the woods out to the open.

- Course appeared to be immaculately maintained. Brooms at every tee pad are a nice touch. Plenty of benches and the tee signs look good.

- Multiple pin placements is always a plus assuming they get moved around occassionally.

- Beginner friendly short pads are sure to get some of the regular park visitors attracted to disc golf.

- Navigation was easy and 9 & 18 both end in proximity to hole 1.

Cons:

- Longer than usual walk from parking lot to 1st tee pad but the park is so nice it's hard to count that against the course.

- Time will take care of this on it's own, but if I have to think of another con it would be that some of the young trees in play on the open fairways need time to grow before they become a true strategical force to reckon with. It's still "grip 'n rip" on several of the open fairways without concern of foliage.

- signage is decent but the tee signs could use a way to show what basket position you are throwing to since many of them are blind from the tee.

Other Thoughts:

- I really enjoyed the course. My family enjoyed the park while I was playing. I would absolutely love to play a tournament at this park/course. If I lived closer I would play here often without a doubt. Can't wait to return!

- out of towners, don't miss out on this one!

Pros:

The course if very well maintained, and it's in an overall nice park. It has a nice layout, good signage, and there's a good mix of harder and more difficult holes. The course is about half in the woods and half open space. So, it's almost like playing at Lenora and Ft. Yargo at the same time.

Cons:

Theres often quite a few people playing on any given day, so there tends to be a lot of foot traffic. Some of the tees run quite close to one another, like 18 and 16. You really have to watch the throws sometimes to avoid hitting other players.

* Love the brooms at each concrete tee-pads.

Cons:

* Can't really think of anything I didn't like. Was really one of the best I've played.
* Lacks some of the creativity I've seen in other courses.

After playing Flyboy earlier this year, all courses I play have a lot of live up to. This one lacks the amazingness of Flyboy, water challenges and scenic beauty of Flyboy. So, 4.0 is best I could give it.

Variety of terrain, elevation, obstacles, wooded and clear holes, short and long, always well maintained. Very well designed and balanced course. Trashcans and benches frequently throughout course.

Cons:

There really are not many cons. Overall, it is an excellent course, although, maybe for the pros, this may not be the most challenging course ever, but is very enjoyable even for intermediate to advanced players. More fun than expected 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Superb layout. Lawrenceville should be very proud to have such a pristine course within its city lines. My favorite part of this course is was the tee area. Great signage, discriptive approach on the signs, and admirable next hole signs. Also the tee pads themselves, concrete, gives you a chance at multiple X-step approaches. The back of the tee pad starts wide and narrows towards the chains. Very clutch on the couple mean Anhyzers i threw. Also, having benches to set your bag down at the tee, and not get dirt, leaves, and pinestraw all in a hanging towel was a big plus. I'm excited to find out when tourneys are played here. Alexander Park is just a solid disc course. You'll need every disc in your bag, as well as every shot in your arsenal at some point. I think i played every disc in my bag atleast once during my round. Granted, some more than others. The front 9 were medium range and right to the point. There is the chains, now go get it! The back 9 offered a little more distance and challenge with shot shaping. The front start you out with a huge confidence booster to get ready to crush it on the back 9. I will be revisiting this course very soon.

Cons:

Make sure to be very carful when teeing off on select holes. There are a few which overlaps others, and some tee pads are in line with a miss throw. Check the area before stepping on and off the pads. This is more present in the back 9. I belive this was the ONLY negative i discovered about this beautiful course.

Other Thoughts:

Once you pull into the park, take a left and drive all the way around to the back of the play ground. You will see a gravel parking lot, and the first tee is just over the hill on the right. Just follow the dirt walkway on the right to the practice basket. It was my first time out there and some locals helped me to it. This should clear up first tee location for any other Alexander Park virgins haha

A really Georgia peach! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

I cannot begin to describe how nice and well-kept this park is. The facilities, even if a little far from the actual course are great. Nice bathrooms, playground, walking trails, etc.

The course is just over a year old, and the Discatchers are in great shape. Trapezoidal tees are very nice and textured perfectly. Short tees as I remember were rectangular, just as nice as the longs. Tee signs are of excellent quality and very accurate. There is a very nice practice basket just before hole one, with distance markers in the ground at various distances at all four sides of the basket.

There is a very nice mix of open and wooded holes, right and left turning lines, up and down hills. Overall a very good mixture that should cater to just about any taste in hole design. This is certainly not the longest course, but you don't even notice the brevity because the holes are shaped so well.

Multiple tees and basket positions (all very distinct also) will make sure that this course stays fresh and doesn't get boring, as long as they make sure the move the baskets frequently.

My memorable holes:
3 - Up and over a rise, to a basket tucked just into the tree line. In the long position you have to throw 350' and hit a gap between two trees about 200 feet out to be able to fade back for a good lie for a deuce run.
4 - Starting off in the woods, you have to hit a narrow gap about 100 feet away to get into the open. If you don't hit this 30' or so gap, you will be frustrated with a probable bogey.
6 - Starting down a hill in the woods, you have to throw up, and follow a relatively narrow fairway. Be safe and don't go off left or right, as there is no recovery route to speak of.
8 - Plays with the woods on your right, slightly downhill, and curving right, and cuts into the trees about halfway down. Try a neutral midrange and anhyzer just a bit and let it float on down for a two.
10 - Not the most complicated hole, but just begging for a big hyzer fade, as it drops in elevation and the basket is tucked just into the trees with a wide open window on the right side.
14 - Up and over a hill to the left. Go high and fade hard at the end to lay up at the basket just into the tree line.
15 - With the basket in the right position, it is just right for a hard hyzering flick, but the dogleg is kind of long, so parking it might be a very lucky shot.
17 - Basket in the long position, this appears to be the longest hole setup on the course. Straight out about 300 feet, then angle left around the edge of the pond (don't throw high and have your disc fade right into the water like I did). After that, a couple hundred more feet down a tree lined alley, with the basket tucked into a stand of trees.

Cons:

Not many at all, and nothing very significant.

Could use a paved parking lot for DG like the other areas of the park, but I'm sure that will be coming. The existing gravel lot is not too bad. I also had a little confusion on where the course was in the park, but just following the road around led me to it.

The first two holes I don't really want to call "filler holes", but the foliage really hasn't grown up yet, and they seem pretty straight and easy.

In some of the wooded areas you have to be careful since some holes play close to a walking path that goes through the woods.

I can't really think of anything else!

Other Thoughts:

My rating of a 4 shows the awesomeness of this course, only being detracted by some in-development issues, and the fact that you start with a couple very simplistic holes. Otherwise, this is a GREAT course. It will satisfy every DG personality I believe with its variety and beauty. I have rarely seen such well-done tee pads, signs, baskets, basket mounts, etc. This was a SOLIDLY designed and executed course!

If you are in the Atlanta area, you must play this course. I don't care if you have to go an hour out of your way, do not miss this one!
