Short But Sweet Angelica Creek 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 23, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ It's always nice to see a 9-hole course with a welcome board/course map and practice basket.
+ Bright colored eye-catching plastic 'next' clips attached to the bottom of each basket except 2(broken off) and 3(missing altogether).
+ Some nice natural features like pleasant hills and a creek through the middle of it all.

Cons:

- All tee signs were simple numbered flimsy plastic stakes in the ground. They are tall to be visible but have zero pertinent info.
- Tee areas were just dirt/mud with wooden beams to imply the general direction players ought to throw.
- About half of the fairways throw close to or directly cross over walking paths.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole here for looks and play is hole6 because it is a nice little bendy tunnel of trees and shrubs with a short hill on the left and the swift but serene Angelica Creek on the right. My least favorite hole is right after it. Hole7 is just a simple straight, flat and wide open throw right over a walking path.

As for the course as a whole, Angelica Park is a fun little romp. It's the kind of 9-hole course that you go to if you don't have a lot of time or are just passing through but still want a decent challenge in a quiet setting with some nice scenery. The titular creek gives the course some life and a dusting of tension when it is in play, and the gentle hills are just the right amount of steep to feel enjoyable and not overwhelming. Just be wary of other park goers during your round. There are several walking paths all over the course. As I was playing, there was always one or two other people roaming the grounds. Make sure you are aware of who is around before you throw.

Also, navigation might be a bit tricky. As usual, I try to use the uDisc map only as a last resort, and I did have to use it two or three times because the 'next' clips on the baskets only point the general direction a player should walk. After that, it is up to the player to spot the tall white plastic markers, and that's where the confusion might set in. And once you get where you need to go, mind the rough dirt of the tee areas. Recent weather might result in mud or ice, and some are uneven. Watch your footing. Yes, Angelica Park lacks in the infrastructure somewhat, but at a course this small and open, it matters less than it would at a wooded course or a larger 18-hole course.

Deficiencies aside, the nature of the holes themselves is familiar and pleasant. There were no big surprises or unexpected challenges. It is a straightforward and plain course with the good fortune to have a creek and effective elevation for its holes that barely exceed 350 feet, except for hole9.

The definition of short and sweet. Angelica Creek probably won't make a lasting impact on its players, but they won't leave disappointed.

A Local Practice Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 14, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Goodsized parking lots right next to tee 1.
-On a University campus, nice area.
-Overall a Beginner-Intermediate feel in distance and obstacles.

Cons:

-Holes are pedestrian and repetitive near end.
-Faster moving creek can be a factor by holes 2, 3, and 6. Discs can be swept away.
-The next hole wasn't always obvious, particularly hole 2.
-Construction still ongoing as of December 2017 besides hole 5, beginning of 6.
-Tees are mostly dirt, not the greatest.

Other Thoughts:

Not a lot of people when I was there (December), I imagine it be more trafficked in late spring and autumn. The park itself is quite scenic and nice.

Tee 1 was around 40.310119, -75.929145 in google maps. Hole 1 starts right by the parking lot and has quite a few trees as obstacles. Tee 2 will be a little bit away, follow the street and cross the creek. It's a pretty straight throw. Tee 3 is a little uphill backtrack towards the street and a downhill shot. Hole 4 is uphill and shorter than 2011 map indicates.

Hole 5 looks considerably changed from the 2011 map and shifted over the path due to construction. Hole 6 is alongside the creek and a major loss potential. 7 is across the creek.

Tee 8 is a walk along the path and about as far from 7, as 2 was from 1. Straight distance shot, slightly downhill. Hole 9 is a distance shot slightly uphill, but shorter than 2011 map so that it no longer crosses the path. Good decision.

This is a nice local practice course, but nothing exciting.

Fun afternoon 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice, new baskets. Navigation is relatively easy. Decent use of natural terrain, including a babbling stream.

Cons:

Lots of opportunities for people to be in the way. The course was also pretty damp, even after a few days of sun. No signage, aside from the bare minimum (more below). Natural tees only, mostly in poor shape.

Other Thoughts:

The course is nice enough, for what it is - a town park course. The tees need work, but the layout isn't too bad. It's not a destination course, but if you're in the area it's a fun way to spend a couple hours. There's a stream that cuts through the course, coming into play directly or indirectly on about half the holes.

The course isn't difficult to find, per se; I did however start walking it backwards to find out where everything was, as there was absolutely no signage. The tees are marked by a short stick with a red flag and number; that's the only indication. The course starts further into the park - past where the road curves left, rather than just when you come in. The basket you can see when you come in belongs to hole #7.

Better tees and some improved signage would better this town course a lot. However, enjoy it for what it is, and don't expect too much.

Pleasant Play 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

New baskets. Near amenities. Easy to enjoy, for Beginners to Advanced alike.

Cons:

Single (natural) tee/basket. Plenty of opportunities for non-players to be in the way (many picnic tables along fairways, kids playing near stream, walkers crossing bridge). Course below road-level, much of it between the road and the stream, so wetness could be an issue.

Other Thoughts:

Course plays in a pretty public park, fairly flat, low-cut grass, a smattering of large hardwoods, with a shallow stream and its nearby brush-growth running through the park. The first four holes are nice but somewhat similar - ~275', small number of hardwoods to miss, what elevation there is (the bank of the road) coming into play - and the creek, ever so subtly, too. Number-5 is long-n-flat until the end, when the basket is down and right, protected by trees. Number-6 is fun - choose between a wide right-turner, or throw over some high brush and follow the stream, dropping to the left at the end. Number-7 is back over the creek, needing to clear the brush early, and some large trees in the background late. A flat, hardwood-littered hole greets you at #8, and longest-hole #9 has you throw across an open field, with trees to mis both early and late.

Navigation: Fairly easy - look for the wooden posts painted orange on top. Course flows in a clockwise direction. Tee-2 is on the other side of the stream from basket-1 - cross the road's bridge to reach it. Tee-7 plays back over the creek, near the park's pedestrian bridge.

A relaxing, fun play, with the hardwoods and stream providing some challenge and nice ambiance. Worth a visit if travelling nearby.

New Course; Some Amenities Missing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 19, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

For a shorter course, there are some elements of risk and reward. Many of the baskets are placed near the creek where being off on a drive will mean getting wet (see #3 and especially #6). Many people will end up with a 3 because of taking the "safe" route.

There are brand new Discatchers and are easy to spot. You can see nearly every basket from the tee (#5 is tucked out of view, and #9 is far away, but you can see it). Many of the shots require some skill; nothing is wide open. You will need to maneuver around trees to get a shot at 2. Hole #9 is the lone par 4 on the course, which was a welcome way to end the round. Nice touch for those who are new to the sport to remind them that everything in disc golf isn't pitch & putt.

The park was fairly clean, with trash cans throughout and a nice walking path which is used to get to some of the next tees.

Cons:

The holes are pretty short and aren't too terribly tough. They would be great for those learning the sport. Often you are throwing near and around picnic tables and walking paths. This is an issue the designers are aware of and the picnic tables are looking at being moved.

A lot of the tee shots felt similar to me. I am a Left Hand, Back Hand thrower and I threw a hyzer shot on #2, #5, #6, #7, and #8. I did not throw an anhyzer all day. So, you righties, make sure you bring your understable discs. There is not a whole lot of elevation change, but hills are made use of.

There are no tee signs at the moment. There aren't any tee pads either. Navigation is a little bit of an issue because of this, but most of the tees are visible from the previous basket. There are neon orange posts with hole number and distance now marking each tee. No map available.

Other Thoughts:

Angelica Park has only been around since the beginning of October '09. It is a quick round with some challenge mixed in. Many of the negatives will disappear as the course matures, including more permanent tees (hopefully) and signs, but this course still doesn't rate real high. It is good, and I can see playing it again myself (because I live close), but this is not a destination course. Once the tee pads and signs are in, will probably go up half a disc.

Par is 28. It is easy to get par, but with the water precariously close, getting a whole lot of birdies will take guts and skill.
