Solid Little College Good For A Nooner! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 4, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Angelica Park is on the campus of Alvermia University which is a Division III school in Reading. The small park circles around a creek. The first hole of the course is in the main part of the park, then you walk across the bridge to play 2-7 before heading back into the main part to finish with 8 & 9.

There is a nice big course map at the start. I like the very simple tee signs although I don't like where they are placed. (See Cons). These are, what I call, the campground signs. They are a simple plastic thin pole about a 1/4" thick x 3" wide, very flexible but probably indestructible. In state and national park campgrounds, these are used to number the campsites. The ones here just have the hole number. The pads here are natural and in good shape overall. Discatchers seem to be the basket of choice here in Pennsylvania.

# 1 is 270' through the trees.
# 2 is 262' with a short pad and the creek on your right.
# 3 is slightly downhill with one tree that you need to miss.
# 4 is a slight upward hole at 230'.
# 5 is 374' and there is currently at construction fence just to your left.
# 6 is a 302' hole which is flanked by a hillside on your left and the creek on your right and a big tree in the middle.
# 7 is 374' with a large tree standing tall.
# 8 is 253' that needs a little fade at the end.
# 9 is a long, 535' hole, playing back, which is more or less open.

Cons:

The # 1 Con is these wonderful little campground tee signs are set right at the left front corner of the tee pad so that they are in your head on every tee off. You can see evidence of where players have tried to move over to avoid them.

Really, I don't see any other problems. This is is just a nice, simple little rec course, nothing to get real turned on about and nothing to complain about either.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice little course for the college students to grab a quick round at or in the case today, a law enforcement instructor was catching a quick round on his lunch break. It's pretty average all together, doesn't seem to have any holes that you would remember a year from from now. Without my notes, I think I might have forgotten everything about the course since yesterday.

Decent 9 hole course for beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 18, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good hole set-up with minimal brush or trees in the way.
Located in a nice park in a great area by Alvernia.
Great difference in elevation on each hole.

Cons:

Construction on the road next to the course causes distractions and two of the tees have been cut in half.
Creek running through the middle of the course is a good water hazard but runs fast and can carry discs that may fall into it.

Other Thoughts:

After construction ends this course will be better to play. If I were in this area and was going to play a round or two of disc golf, I would go to Laurelain Park. It is better kept and more challenging to play

Tough to navigate. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 7, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baskets had the hole number on them which helped you at least know what basket to shoot at. Nice use of the land available. Also nice they have a practice basket. Good course for newbies like me.

Cons:

No tee boxes. In desperate need of some signs to help out the first timers. Some of the earlier reviews mentioned posts or something at the tee boxes but there is nothing really there anymore other than a big dirt patch. Not much of a fairway on #6.

Other Thoughts:

Ended up in the area for a function with my daughter and I had 2 hours to kill. I knew the course was nearby and decided to check it out. Saw the practice basket an some others near the parking lot but was unsure if I could find my way around. Luckily I ran into another player who helped out a little and told me where the second basket was. Holes 2,3 and 4 I found easy enough after crossing the creek. Hole 5 I could not find the tee box and walked all around until some other players told me where it was " the dirt spot up by the road". Hole six is easy to find from there but there is not much open area on 6 and it seems like it could be easy to lose a disc in the brush. The basket for hole 7 seems like it has been moved or I played it wrong. The basket for hole 7 was down near the tee spot for hole 8. You did not have to throw it over the creek like it shows on the course map here. Hole 8 was easy to find but on hole 9 I used a dirt patch that I do not think is really the tee box as it seems like the real tee box is really back further if you want to play this as a par 4. Probably not a course you would want to drive out of your way for. Not sure if they are planning on adding tee boxes or not. Looks like they tried to put ones in on #2 and #6 but they were a bit small.

Could easily be a lot better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is fine with a number of straight shots with some tree cover and a few along the creek. The creek is relatively shallow so there's no real worry unless you wear nice shoes.

Cons:

Dirt/mud tee pads that are mostly not marked at all. Nine posts are all it would take to save some headaches. I had to look at the map over and over to find them. Even them, apparently some have been moved and there's no good way to find out where to start without asking someone familiar with the course.

Other Thoughts:

This is only about 30 minutes from my house but since it's only 9 holes and it leaves a lot to desire, I won't be going out of my way to play here again. It's very sad that this is the only disc course anywhere near Reading.

Just Happy to Throw 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 26, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course makes good use of the space provided. While it's not a "destination course," the trees and water provide a mild challenge for beginners and experienced tossers alike. There is little elevation change and a chance to let one or two rip.
I'll give the park the benefit of the doubt and say that it is indeed beautiful. However, I visited after a considerable downpour and an unseasonably early snowstorm that downed several branches and even entire trees. The park was a bit of a mess, but I am certain it was my timing.

Cons:

Complete lack of signage. My cousin and I spent a good 10 minutes just figuring out the flow of the course and even then we threw from the wrong tee at the wrong basket. The only things you have to go by are the numbers on the basket, a neglected arrow directing you from basket one to tee two (You'll need it, so look for it), and at every "tee box" there is a wooden stake, but even then you aren't sure which tee is which.

Another review mentioned there are several opportunities to hit park-goers. It should also be mentioned, there are a couple spots where fellow tossers may be in the line of fire - particularly 8&9 can easily share a fairway. Speaking of which, the fairway is a serious water-collection area.

While it wasn't a big problem for me, the natural tees were a little awkward. Most notably was "tee" nine, which isn't natural, but a cement slab with four sneaky bolts sticking out of it. I'll leave it to you to guess how we figured that one out.

Other Thoughts:

After we had played through once, we enjoyed the course, but, even now, I'm not convinced we did it correctly.

The course info says it's be there for 2-3 years. I don't know the school's financial situation or the cost of such maintenance, but this course would benefit greatly from some simple signage. Even numbering the tees would be an improvement, which, at this point, could be done with a magic marker.

Despite its shortcomings, I was just happy to be able to throw so close to the city. I was visiting for the holidays and am always looking for new places to throw. I'll be back next year. I hope to see this park get some lovin'.

Nice to Newbies yet Exciting for Experts! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 30, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

If your a resident of Reading, PA suffer no more. Theres disc golf in the city proper. This 9 hole course was well thought out in how it can offer a solid introduction to beginners while still offering a clever fun round for more polished players. How it appeals to beginners:
-Reasonable length
-baskets visible from most tees
-no frustrating lose your disc holes(little shule and it's tame and the water is shallow and disc retrievable)
-longer hole #9 gives enough space for beginner error
-gives a glimpse of what is so enticing about our game without overwhelming(mild elevation, mild water, mild shot making lanes, mild challenge)
-introduces players to a bit of the cerebral game as well with decision off the tee of many of the holes
In essence you can introduce someone to the game here and they will get a sense of what the fuss is all about. Pitch-n-putts bore pros and beginners alike but this place has some really interesting yet unintimidating shots to negotiate.
How it appeals to Better Players:
-Clever holes that will test your shot-making skills.
-Birdie Hunt on every hole and ACE potential on several but None of the holes are simple or plain though.
-Theres risk on every hole that makes the round fun
-Moderate length for a niner and one 500+ ft hole to finish the day
I really enjoyed my round here and am glad the first course in Reading was not a bland municipal engineered throwaway course. As an intermediate player, I felt at home here. I truly felt my pro friends could have fun here for a casual round making ace or birdie runs while my Noob friends would have enough fun here to perhaps branch out to more challenging courses one day. Beautiful City Park sets good backdrop for disc golf.

Cons:

This might get touchy as I realize the course designer did a fine job of addressing many of the limitations of the course.
-Tees are natural (I didnt mind especially since the stakes had hole info on them) and many scoff at this, as the course matures and tees become rutted or dangerous I am sure justification for better tees will be made.
-The picnic benches in a few of the fairways are inviting trouble (does not matter that designers have asked city to remove them and they are not used excessively..the bottom line is they are still there and for a city unfamiliar with disc golf it just takes one incident to tarnish the course and sport..lawsuit anyone?) I would suggest at least moving tee for #9 30 feet to the right...you still have a great tree gap shot off the tee and your not driving a high speed driver over a picnic table that is sure to be used as it is one of the few next to the scenic creek. (just because there are no full flegded picnics going on does not mean a smooching couple, an older woman with a dog or a man smoking a cigar won't choose to rest on such a spot) Also remember Noobs often don't adhere to the safety or the fellowship/ettiquete of our game so sadly we have to foresee the ignorant public and ignorant player into layout...If the tees are adjusted or the tables moved this gripe becomes little ado about nothing. (more a hint to city than designers)
-The walkways though not used often pose a similiar risk...but for the most part there are no blind areas where a drive would surprise a walker or a walker would surprise a golfer...I was hesitant to throw over the bridge for #7 but I could see all traffic from the tee and there was none.
-Would love to see the baskets with the creek nearby at least have a 10 ft swath cut out between basket and creek to enhance beauty of basket areas and aid in disc retrieval..would also minimize riparian buffer being trampled if traffic could be highwayed into a clear cut area to get to creek etc....especially for the area by bridge for holes #6 and #7. Plenty of discs are sure to go into the drink here and would be a real pretty area if maintained well...I also envision those small bushes and trees taking over the fairway to hole #7.
-There is nothing wrong with the course design itself, from a purely disc golf perspective. It's a lot of fun and if these matters are addressed I would consider this a hidden gem.

Other Thoughts:

When the Kiosk is done and a map/safety warnings/etc. are complete the disc golf area will almost seem as an exclusive disc golf course with the basket and ample parking area.
If the steep wooded hillside across the street is ever incorporated into the course as a next nine and if the course designers can maximize those sweeping cliffs and old growth trees to their fullest potential as they did the first part of the course then this place will immediately become a favorite of mine. Those woods are just begging to be made into a technical wonderland with extreme elevation and dramatic scenery to counter the milder but clever front 9 already in place. I tried to be fair in my review and held no punches. In the final analysis, I would highly recommend trying this course out and look forward to seeing how this course grows. With a golf coach, a college population, a large metro area, city support and a disc golf enthusuast behind the scenes it seems conditions are ripe for something special. Kudos!
