A nice 9 hole course with great views 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great views
Located between two great 18 hole courses
Some fun holes that punish bad shots

Cons:

Apparently snakes (haven't seen 1st person, but have heard from others)
Only 9 holes, so tough to justify the drive
Incredibly windy most of the time

Other Thoughts:

Pars on tee signs are definitely for novices, plays a par 27.

Trip to SD 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This was a great course to really get a feel for the terrain in this area of SD.
-Very nice combo of long and shorter holes keep you thinking.
-Great use of giant hillsides, rocky little valleys and thick little clusters of trees make for a fun and risky course.
-Super nice baskets that were placed and mounted well.
-Well maintained fairways and a great scorecard/map made navigation no problem.
-Good signage and flow. 9 takes you right back to 1 for optional rethrow for 18.
-Views of the beautiful Angostura Resevior are all around you.

Cons:

No tee boxes! We like to adapt to courses with different tee boxes but some shorter holes had just enough room to stand with maybe a little step on gravel. I would like to say all longer drives had nice long level areas to throw from though.

Other Thoughts:

This was a great course to throw and hike for a real feel of this area in SD. Wear pants and boots! The rough will punish you. You will definitely get a good taste of the wild environment in this area with huge hillsides, rocks, cacti, prickers, stickers and snakes all in the mix. If as you drive through the huge rolling hills of this area of South Dakota you think "Wow I would like to play on those hilltops" - this is that course.

SD State Parks/Rec Areas are Good 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Lots of elevation changes. Makes for tricky greens, tricky approaches and makes you choose safe and long or short and dangerous!
-Nice innova baskets
-Scorecards are among the best I've seen
-Beautiful scenery over the Angostura Reservoir
-Lots of other things to do in the Rec area
-Fairly long and challenging 9
-Lots of risk/reward shots.
-We saw a moose while playing. He was sitting past hole 2's basket. Also saw deer.
-Signage on holes and mowed paths make navigation pretty good.
-I really liked holes 2, 5, 6, and 9. 2 is the second longest and is over rolling hills with a slightly protected basket. 5 and 6 are the signature holes over the edge of the course. They have a lot of risk/reward and are fun. 9 is a great closer to this course.

Cons:

-Some of the tees are bad, unlevel, rocky, etc. 9 was especially bad.
-The grass could get long and eat some discs
-The grass also contains cacti and critters. Watch your step.
-There aren't many trees but this course is beautiful and challenging in other ways.

Other Thoughts:

This course is pay to play, like all SD State Parks and Rec areas. I would say it is worth buying the season pass if you travel around there often. 28 dollars for access to 12 courses. They are all decent and some are a lot of fun. I would recommend a stop here if you are ever in the Southern Hills area. This is my favorite 9 hole in the hills and is an excellent compliment to the other great area courses Pageant Hill in Custer, Jackson Park in Rapid, and Spearfish Canyon. Another note; this course could be very windy. Some say con, some say pro. Either way, I like this course.
