Pros:

Armco Blue is the longer, advanced level course out of the two courses onsite. The park features pretty drastic elevation throughout, which is used fantastically on this course. I don't think there's a single flat hole on the whole course.

The trees are going to be your main challenge other than the elevation. Every hole has at least a few trees lining the fairway. Most have a lot of trees. Staying on the fairway is key here. If you can do that, you'll do alright. If you don't, you'll struggle.

The baskets here are Discatchers with a pretty blue top band. Not the brightest looking baskets, but they look sharp and it's not too hard to spot them anyway. The baskets are all mounted nicely and they catch great.

As of the spring of 2022 there are brand new concrete tees on every hole, both longs and shorts. These are very nice. All are poured level and have nice grip. It definitely sounds like an improvement over the old tees, which I heard weren't the most level tees out there. Two tees on every hole.

The majority of the holes are longer here and favor the big arms from the long tees. Even the short tees looked to be pretty lengthy. The long throwers will really enjoy this course.

The design is well thought out here. There's only 1 hole that kind of felt like filler. I want to say it was hole 10. Somewhere in that area. The rest are tight, tough fairways with roll away potential at every turn.

The course is permanent and free to play. There are restrooms by the lot as well.

Cons:

It seems to be a theme over in this general area, but the tee signs are pretty terrible. They have the hole # and distance along with the hole sponsor. That's it. A hole map and next tee arrow would go a long way here. Now that they redid the tees hopefully the tee signs are the next order of business. As is, they're a definite con.

There's a couple longer, not obvious walks between holes. Using the map on Udisc will mitigate this but without a map you'll end up wandering around for a bit to find the next pad.

There's a number of spots where you throw over or very near the park roads. Just be sure you're aware of your surroundings.

Other Thoughts:

Armco Blue is one of the tougher courses I played on a long road trip full of tough courses. I saw the pictures and thought it can be that bad, it's just a hilly park course, no big deal. Nope. I mean it is a hilly park style course, but these hills are no joke. Bring plenty of fluids and expect a long round. This course is a workout. I definitely recommend this course if you're in the area or travelling through. Bonus points for having a second course onsite.

You Gotta Find A Good Line. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The layout is a lot of fun. It really has a lot of variety. The hike isn't bad either.

Teepads are great. Signs are easy to distinguish between Long and Short tees.

Cons:

Get used to hitting trees all day. It's a tough one, but that's what makes you learn to find those lines.

Watch for cars driving through the park; you play along the road the majority of the time.

One issue isn't course related: while the park is pretty well maintained, you'll definitely see trash and broken glass bottles throughout the course. It's pretty disappointing in how people treat this park.

Other Thoughts:

Really good location; two courses to choose from. Blue course is a tough one for sure. But I'm glad to give it a try now and then. Good news is I've improved each time. You'll learn what lines you want to thow and when you get it, you feel a sense of accomplishment; especially when your fellow players hit the trees 10 feet away and you didn't!

Extreme City Park! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 9, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Armco Park is a very well-maintained park with 2 distinctly different 18s for your pleasure. You'll also have 2 (completely different looks) concrete pads with signs on every hole and 2 pin placements. The blue course is very "city park" style but with more trees and tons of elevation. There's remarkably zero rough unless you sail long or left on #11. The elevation is pretty intense with lots of fun downhill bombs (63 floors walked up per my FitBit). It's a very smart layout with multiple realistic paths through the trees. Just about every hole has a few different ways to the basket. A few holes use the park roads to create islands or better define greens.

Armco folklore maintains that the heralded designer was tasked with designing this course without removing a single tree. Bravo sir!

Cons:

Could use more bridges and next-tee signs. The signs are very basic, only showing distance. There's no marker for pin placement on the tee either It's not a huge problem but when playing the long tees, it would be nice to see a basic line description. This would aid in finding the next tee too. I almost missed the not-to-be-missed hole 11 (tee up the gravel path to the left). Park roads, although rarely travelled, are often closely in play. Enforcing OB could be brutal. Tees generally aren't level--usually just following the grade of the land. It's not ideal and especially annoying with the uphill drives. Warning to the gotta-party crowd: there's a police station at the base of the park.

Other Thoughts:

Armco lets you choose your own adventure in different ways. The Blue course is long with multiple tight lines and, from the longs, challenges you with at least 6 or 7 legit par 4s. Don't mistake the neighboring white course (just across the parking lot) as the easier option! It's indeed shorter but those holes are in a more wooded/extreme part of the park. The fantastic grooming and smart design continues there. Armco Park is a fun and demanding course, well worth your time. Plus you're located near another fine 36 holes in Rotary/Indian Rock 20 miles away in Huntington.

Armco Park Blue DGC Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Nice course that is well maintained with good length located next to major thoroughfares and businesses for convenience and ease of location.
-two pin locations for baskets make for variety
-Restrooms are plentiful and water is available at several locations.
-Lots of shade from trees but baskets are usually easy to find as they have a yellow ring on top.
-good length
-beautiful park
-Ky State Police Barracks located adjacent park
-only one fairway (hole 9) with thick vegetation next to it.

Cons:

-length of some fairways and course overall may discourage newer players
-Trees are everywhere and in play in most fairways but not hardly as bad as White Course.
-Elevations changes aplenty but again not as bad as White Course.
-Park roadways cris-cross this course.
-Shelter houses are located close to a some tees and if a party/function is ongoing you may receive looks/viewed as intruding. It wasn't so bad though. Throw and move on. Was heckled by some idiots once from a shelter house party. It was funny though.
-Have had to throw over vehicles parked in fairways at said functions.

Other Thoughts:

Nice course for a great outing.

Legco Blues 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 22, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well maintained grass fairways through speckled mature hardwoods over elevation galore. 18 blue and white concrete tees, single discatcher baskets, and tee signs. Good variety of par 3, 4 and 5 holes. Course is completely shaded with no underbrush, what an awesome and rare combination! Very low risk of losing a disc. Very high fun factor for shorter arms. Bathrooms and water by parking lot in season.

Cons:

Plays along park roads/neighbor. No loop back to parking lot. Navigation a little tricky in places. Some tees showing wear with cracks and uneven. Hiking the elevation and length of this course is a physical feat. Steep slopes causing roll a ways.

I understand no trees were cut in the design of the course which is great, but it shows from the blue tees if you have a big arm. The amount of elevation makes it hard to have great long holes because the ceiling gets reduced and the floor raises the longer you go. There is a deja-vu on many holes because off the tee they all look similar as the longer you throw the gaps become narrow and scatty. Despite the long length of the course I never got to grip and rip. Many of the holes become some random plinko half-way to 2/3 down the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

Armco Blue is a great park course overall, I really enjoyed the elevation, and shade and challenges presented on each hole, but it felt a bit repetitive and didn't really have a signature hole in my mind because of that. I probably would have enjoyed this course much more when I didn't throw as far. The course should be called Legco, because my legs were done after hiking it. At any rate, I'd highly recommend this course to anyone physically able to leg it.

Liked white course better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

If you like to throw long this is your course. You have to avoid trees and ditches but for the most part there are open lines to advance to the basket. Tees baskets fairways and all were in very good shape. Good exercise going up and down and sideways on the hills.

Cons:

Seemed like most of the holes were the same. Throw long and try to stay out of the ditches. The shorter tees did not offer enough distance help for shorter throwers like me.

Other Thoughts:

White course is more technical and more variety. Distance was also more manageable for me who typically throws 175' or so off the tee.

The White Course's Big Brother 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good variety of shots, variety of length. A few open holes, but most are about as open as the White course on the other side of the parking lot. You'd better bring your accurate arm if you're hoping to score well here.

The Blue course presents a fun challenge to players of most skill levels (I'm sure 1000+ rated players would still eat it up, but I'm talking about the rest of us).

Cons:

Some of the holes have a pretty good walk to the next tees. The course flows well, though, and there are good signs posted when it's not clear where the next hole is, so navigation is not a problem at all. It would be nice if the tee signs had hole diagrams on them, because some of the baskets are hard to see from the tees once the leaves are out.

Other Thoughts:

This is certainly the big brother at Armco, and not a course I'd take a beginner out on. It's also not really a pure grip and rip course, because of all those darn trees that Johnny Sias likes to leave standing in the most inconvenient places. With two courses on-site, Armco Park is a solid disc golf destination -- especially when you consider Rotary Park/Indian Rock is only about a half hour away!

Nice Course in a Nice Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very nice park, well maintained with lots of restrooms, shelters, and multiple water spigots.

Lots of elevation changes keep it interesting and provide a good workout.

Tight technical course that plays through mature trees throughout and will test more advanced players.

It's hard to lose a disc here. Very little underbrush and while there are lots of steep hills to gobble up errant discs you'll always see where they go.

Cons:

While this course requires a variety of technical shots, it does not offer a great variety of scenery / hole types.

Quite a bit of broken glass.

I would like more detailed signs at the tees as well as more signs pointing you toward the next tee box.

No pets allowed.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a really nice and fun course. As one previous reviewer said, since there's the added bonus of another 18 hole course in the same park it's well worth a trip to visit and play both.

Competition style layout 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice pads

Restrooms all over the place

Benches, trash cans and shelters always within reach

Great distance - nice long course

Long and short tee's

Cons:

The tee signs would be more helpful with pin placements on them

Lacks a little in diversity

Other Thoughts:

This is a challenging course. It is long and the lines are often tight. Novices will be easily frustrated here.

The park is beautiful. Huge mature trees and rolling fairways throughout.

The course is in a limbo-like open-wooded state. I wouldn't call it a tight course per say. You feel like you are pretty much out in the open most of the course. However, the lines you need to hit are sharp. The pin placements and daunting length make this feel tight even though you never really "enter the woods".

There were at least 2 police cars patrolling the park the entire time I was there. This place is very well maintained. It is manicured and in tournament condition.

This is worth a trip all by itself.
