New Tees Installed! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

New concrete tees installed! All of them are very large, and all are level. Kudos to Garland Parks and Recreation!

Cons:

The burrs off of the fairways are already starting to rear their ugly heads so STAY IN THE FAIRWAYS!!! (and watch for snakes)

Other Thoughts:

Tuesday night mini starts tomorrow night with an established ace pot (moving from another course). Random draw doubles. the disc golf traffic has already doubled since the tees were poured on Thursday/Friday of last week.

New Signs! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 7, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

***New signs added today!*** Challenging course that has a great variety of shots, both distance and direction. Some fun and unique holes including one over the river. Longer holes challenge even the biggest arms and the trees are never too dense offering reasonable obstacles and thoughtful hole design. Good flow from hole to hole but it certainly helps having a guide because it can be difficult to spot the next tee if you have never played here before. The first time I played here, most of the signs were missing and without a local guide, It would have been difficult to know where to aim on many holes. This has been corrected and the new signs boost the rating of this course big time!

Cons:

The tees are all dirt and some are quite worn down. While they are reasonably easy to spot, I could see traction being a problem with any weather. I have only played this course in the winter, when it's been dry, but have heard from locals that it can become flooded and nearly unplayable after heavy rains. Despite being a large spread out park, some holes are close to walking paths where pedestrians seem completely unaware of the hazard. Today, a fellow disc patron almost beefed two elderly ladies from 300 out and although we all yelled fore, they seemed totally oblivious to why we were yelling at them. Could definitely use more garbage bins (like 15 more!)

Other Thoughts:

Overall, a really nice course. A few tweaks, including the addition of some concrete tee pads, would put this course up there with the elite Dallas area courses. The terrain and hole design are already there in my opinion.

Fun course for in-town players 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 7, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fun course if you are in the middle of Dallas. Not sure I'd travel all the way here just for this course, but it's probably a fun league-night course, and worth a commute if you are in town for a few days, too. There are enough challenges to make this fun, for both an intermediate level player and for a beginner. The beginner can get a few pars and play the other holes safe while a more experienced player can go for it on most holes and probably get a few down.

Challenging yet Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 9, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has long defined, mowed fairways, surrounded by large trees. The distance and tight shots can be intimidating, but the lanes are open enough to make, creating a very fun round. Course was very well maintained (today), and easily navigated.

Cons:

Dirt tees and small signs. Most of the posts were painted yellow for visibility, but a couple were not. Pins were not labeled numerically, so as a gazed down the fairway and saw 2 baskets I had to use reason as to which one I was throwing to. This course would get another .5 stars if it had concrete tees and better markings with distances. But the flow is obvious.

Other Thoughts:

It's been several years since I played this course, and I don't know why! I thought the course is laid out well overall and had a nice flow. There are several holes with very similar distances, maybe a little more variation would be nice? And possibly move hole 10 to the right, closer to the bridge and make it shorter...this would avoid walking in the fairway back from 15 to 16. I really like this course and will be back more often.

Very Nice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 29, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Well Maintained. Long holes. Few trees. Good flow from hole to hole. Doesn't get or feel crowded given the amount of space. Bathroom facilities close by. Great Parking. About as close as you can get to playing on a Golf Course.

Cons:

Not a lot of elevation changes. Not overly challenging with obstacles/basket placement. Concrete pads would be a nice addition but I would not down rate it for that.

Other Thoughts:

I am surprised this course is not rated higher. I only started coming here in May 2012, so I don't know what it used to be. A great open course for those that don't want to loose their mind and scream expletives on a technical course like Cedar Hill.

Much improved course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 7, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Improved layout, lots of open space/long course, easily visible gold tee markers, big arm holes abounding

Cons:

No concrete tees (I was okay with the dirt), tall grass/weeds, people not utilizing the trash cans, inadequate signage.

Other Thoughts:

I was thoroughly impressed with this course today. I haven't played it in at least a few years because I grew tired of the ever-changing layout and poorly marked holes. Today, it was much different. Easy to see gold markers at each tee won me over. It's a very long course that plays well into the hands of big arm throwers and lots of anhyzer shots.

It would be nice to see some brush/weeds whacked at several holes as well as getting some concrete tee pads. Also, some additional trash cans would help keep the lazy slobs from dumping their bottles on the course. Overall I was well pleased with the course and I'll be playing it more often. :)

Lots of blind throws that are very challenging. Very nice flow from one hole to the next (excluding 16 to 17). Very nice baskets and good location with lots of challenging shots. Nice open drive or accuracy needed on each hole. Fun

Cons:

Lots of ways to loose a disc. Lots of vegetation including poison ivy. Some concrete pads would be nice too.

Other Thoughts:

Had a great time and am definitely going to play it again. The amount of blind shots are very challenging. Once i play a few more times this should not be a problem though

Audubon Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 2, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

HUGE course
Great for big drives.
Holes have great mix of left and right hand challenge.
Accurate map can be found in rec center.

Cons:

Can have VERY tall grass, not mowed enough.
Poison Ivy EVERYWHERE, keep your eyes open.
Dirt tee pads.

Other Thoughts:

I have played this course many many times now and I must so that over all it is a very good course and I would recommend it to intermediates as well as new players. The only real complaints I have about it are the dirt tees! I hate dirt tees, but I must say that this park is played enough that they are in good shape and have that "groove". I guess I really don't have much else to say so I will just give a short description of each hole!

1 Nice open straight shot with the basket dog legged to the left.

2 More or less straight shot with the basket down the hill to the left a bit.

3 The basket ( ITS NOT THE ONE TO LEFT IN THE OPEN) is FAR straight back in a little pocket in the tree line, has two routes to take... up the middle through the trees or you can go to the left where it is more clear. Behind the basket is a trail to basket 4, it can be hard to see.

4 This is the shortest hole on the course, but that doesn't make it easy...you have to throw through a couple of openings in the tree to get to the basket that is just to the left once out of the brush.

5 This can frighten first time players of the course....you have to hyzer through a tree/brush window over a river to get to the the basket. There is a small trail to the left of the tee to get to the basket.

6 Brush on the left and right can smack a disc down with those less accurate, and once you get to the open you have to shoot under a tree canopy.

7 Nice straight shot will get you to the basket

8 Straight shot with only a few trees to worry about

9 Straight shot with a few trees

10 can be a tough shot, from the tee you have to throw a line through a BUNCH of tree then it turns into a big open shot up until you get to the basket which is tucked away in the tree line straight ahead.

11 Big open straight shot with the basket tucked into the tree line around the big power pole.

12 Big open hole with a hard dog leg right for the basket.

13 Basket is straight ahead, big anhyzer hole.

14 BIG arm hole, basket is straight ahead, avoid the tree in the middle of the field.

15 Shoot under the trees straight ahead.

16 Straight ahead mid range hole, easy.

17 Basket is straight behind a few trees, throw out to the left or right for easy putt.

18 Straight shot just be sure not to throw too high because of the trees.

Way Under-rated 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 18, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great use of the land and creek. Extremely well kept facility but I hear the grass can get long before it's mowed. The natural teepads don't bother me at all and are nice and flat from use. Locals are great.

Cons:

The map I printed from DGCR was not correct, 2 and 3 have been merged it seems but soon found a local to play with.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fantastic multi-use facility that I will return to when I'm in town many more times. I guess I have a different standard because I gave a rating based on the variety of holes and fun of play, not nit-picky stuff like trash cans and concrete pads.

Like to play more than three holes 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Decent Chinese food close. Read update under other thoughts.

Cons:

Over Grown, could not follow lay out, Made it to what we believe is hole 3 and searched for hole 4 for about 30 minutes before going back. Terrible course.

Other Thoughts:

I know this is a harsh review but as a new player having played Harry Meyers, B.B. Owens, Paschal, and Porter, this course was a huge turn off. No concrete tees, and no signage make playing this course a hassle. I will rereview it when I find someone to show me the course, but for now this sets the low bar standard.

UPDATE: I played it again after my brother painstakingly found what he believed were the tee pads and corresponding baskets. Since then they have put in new yellow post to indicate tees. Brother was just a little off on a couple of holes. Now I LOVE this course! It is certainly a course for big arms. High risk holes are like poker for money. They just make it better. Lots of fun.

Enjoyable, fun course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 5, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Decent variety between righty, lefty and straights.
-Some long, some real long and a couple shorts.
-Multiple dirt tee's
-Good shade on the front nine.

Cons:

-Not a fan of dirt tee's but there are quite a few different marked ones now so it's a give and a take I suppose. The creek.
-If you go in with the exception of a few spots, your gone.
-No Signage. Can be hard to navigate first time. Map at rec. center is old and hard to follow but better than nothing.
-Tree's and a few hazards could frustrate beginners and first timers.
-People/Park Dept. don't take great care of the place. Parks cut a few branches, not enough trash cans, trash and litter throughout. The creek is disgusting.
-Back nine can get hot.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I really like this course. It is close and less crowded than B.B. Owen. However, it is kind of dirty and I don't like dirt tee's. I will agree that sometimes there can be some shady types hanging around but I also have noticed it is patrolled somewhat regularly by Garland police. It is a fun course with good variety and at least to me a charm that keeps me wanting to come back. It has been BEAUTIFUL this fall except I did lose a disc in the leaves.

#6 is probably the funnest hole on the course, at least for me.

Much Better Now 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The work done on this course has made it so much more fun to play. The new pin placements make the lanes a lot of fun. Definitely a risk/reward course. Make the fairway and your up shot/birdie shot should be good. Get outside the line and your laying up.

Makes your game better. You can't come here and run and gun. Makes you play better.

Cons:

Tee Pads. The dirt areas a worn and rutted. But I think this is being worked on.

Other Thoughts:

Glad that I can put this course back into my rotation.

Such a great track,... truly! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The holes allow ( require ) creativity, finesse', and a great deal of power to effectively navigate this course. Birdies are tough, but very tempting, and the non-birdiable holes are fairly laid out to reward a three. The seductive power of this course is that par is a very goos score, but for a long chucker, 13 chances for 2 from the yellows is there ( like a dangling carrot). Typically, though, the course will take back the carrot, and stick you in the eye with it.

Cons:

I have lost a bunch of nice discs , and a lot of pride, going for the basket, where the deep creek nearby represented the "risk" of an approach.

Other Thoughts:

They have addressed this a bit (#4), but the risks remain real and present. The new baskets are a welcome sight! I remember the old ones ( and the memories are not fond ones). This course will improve your game.

Great Course, Not sure why the low rating 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 25, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course will push any player to the limits. I play the wednesday minis here and to my knowledge or anyone elses, the course record is -3ish by a local pro. It is an over all great course, all kinds of different holes, long, short, left, right. I am not sure of why it has a low rating other than there are a lot of novice players who hate that it is too challenging.

The course in my opinion is easy to navigate, I've played way harder than this.

Cons:

The only con I can think of and I wouldn't say is a big deal is there are no tee pads. Not all drives are from cement, so you gotta get used to it at some point.

Other Thoughts:

Wed Night Draw Dub Minis, $5 play, $1 ace pot and a CTP Prize.

Compass, Field Glasses, and a Map…Not Enough. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a very long course with lots of trees, wide-open holes, and some slight elevation. There are 2 tee positions on many of the holes. The holes with trees are well designed with multiple routes and accuracy shots needed. The long wide-open holes are long enough to air out your drives. This is a tough course and for me that is a plus. There are a few tough pin placements to add to the difficulty. This place also has bathrooms on site.

Cons:

Navigation is horrible here even with the map. You should really get a guide your first time here. Even the map has some mistakes on it. Not all the hole posts are there and some of the dirt/grass tee pads are in bad shape. Tee signs are really needed here to help with the navigation. Some of the walks between holes is quite extensive. Hole #15 to #16 was the longest one by far. The grounds are not well maintained. There needs to be some serious grass cutting and cleaning up going on. They do need trashcans out on the course.

Other Thoughts:

The Fun Factor here is really mixed for me. There are some really great driving holes with trees in just the right spot to make you navigate your drives. I like that, but then there are some holes that are just obvious fillers. The navigation is bad, but after you play here once, you should be good to go. This course is tough and that is the long and short of it. It is a good long hike for exercise, so stop by here if you have time.

Audubon finally getting much needed face-lift 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 18, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Challenging layout, even for big arms. Many of the holes on this course require not only good distance, but accuracy and smart disc placement in order to score well. Not very many easy birdies to be found here...you've really got to work for them. There are only 2 holes that are long (over 450') and wide-open...most have ample trees, elevation and/or water to contend with. There aren't any that I would consider a true par 4+, but there are several that play like very difficult par 3s.

-Unique layout. With the exception of a few shorter holes, most on this course are different from anything else in the DFW. Holes 2-7 are probably the best example of this, with hole 3 being what I would consider the "signature" hole.

-The course has undergone a great deal of improvement over the last year. All new baskets (which is a big plus if you ever played on the previous homemade baskets), several new pin / tee placements, and looks nice overall. The city of Garland must have noticed the surge of new players at the park, because they have been mowing regularly (another big improvement from a few years ago)

-2 sets of tees on many holes (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17)...the yellow tees are the "original" layout (dating back 6-7 years) and the blue tees are the most recent. The blue tees are generally shorter, though a few are longer.

Cons:

-Biggest con, in my opinion, is the lack of quality or even remotely level tee areas on the majority of holes. The tees are all dirt with painted landscape posts marking them. Some of the newer tees (the blue ones) are fairly level, but 75% of the older ones (yellow) have moderate to deep ruts in them. Not only are they annoying, but many of them border on being dangerous (especially Hole 2 Yellow, since it's on the side of a fairly steep hill). When it rains, the tees are all covered in mud; when it hasn't rained for a few week, they're all covered with loose sand...either way, the footing isn't very solid.

-Lack of signage. Looking for the distance for this one? No such luck. The lack of signs also makes navigation pretty tough the first time through...but after that first time, it's easy to remember.

Other Thoughts:

Audubon was once THE premier course in Dallas, but fell into a state of disrepair for several years...during which time it got a bad reputation among many locals. Recently, however, there has been a huge surge in new players at the course, many who are serious about improving the course and its reputation. The Wednesday night mini averages 30 people, which tells you just how good of a course Audubon is. Keep an eye out for new tees and signs in the near future...we, the locals, plan on putting "The Bon" back on the map!

Encouraging improvements! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 14, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

18 brand new DGA baskets! You'll have to make a lot of different shots. It's a great course for practicing placement of the big drive. Great shade in the summer on all of the holes. One of the best layouts in the area, not like other area courses. High fun factor. There are options on how to approach baskets on most of the holes. Great course for learning course management. Not crowded. The city has been mowing the course regularly... it makes a big difference in a positive way.

Cons:

Natural tee pads are in really bad shape. Some crushed rock at the tees would really help. The course has a lot of wet areas that require a long time to dry out.

No signs. First timers will need a guide.

Other Thoughts:

Audubon is a nice park. The course has improved a lot lately. It would be one of the best courses in the area if the City of Garland would do something about the tees. The "very good" rating is due to the fun you will have playing the course. It's worth the trip if you like a challenging course. The work the city of Garland has recently put into this course have really improved the playability and my rating.
