97% Unbiased Home Course Review

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 5, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-The location couldn't be better for park style golf. The slightly rolling landscape, some trees, and minimal litter make for a picturesque course.
-Holes 5, 7, and 8 are all fun and interesting.
-There are bathrooms at the park, however they are a bit of a walk from the actual course.
-For the most part, this course flows well and has an intuitive design.
-There are a good mix of ace runs and bomber shots.
-Although a "family friendly" course, some holes will provide a challenge for more experienced players as well.
-There are enough trees to keep things interesting on most holes.
-Although it isn't related to disc golf, there is a really cool RC car track here as well

Cons:

-Some of the tee pads are just spray painted onto the walking trail. While this has never been a huge issue for me, on a busy day, it could prove a problem.
-Holes 1 and 3 are pretty wide open with not much elevation change.
-Hole 8's tee can be confusing.
-In the spring/summer, lost discs are a possibility in the rough.
-None of the holes are exactly technical.

Other Thoughts:

-This course has Mach V baskets. They are in decent condition and do what they are meant to do.
-This is definitely park style golf. There are a few but not many trees scattered around.
-The tee pads are your typical concrete pads
-The wooden bridge and staircase on holes 7 and 8 can get slippery in the rain
-Although there is a lake in the park, it doesn't come into play too much. I personally have never lost a disc there or worried about it, but I suppose if you threw a roller on hole 9 it could make it all the way to the lake.
-This is a nine-hole course. It used to be 18 holes and is still listed on DiscGolfScene as such, but that is incorrect. I never got to play it as 18, so this review is only about the nine-hole layout.
-This is not a pitch and putt course. The shortest hole is just over 200 ft., and the longest one is over 500.
-This being my home course, I tried to write as unbiased a review as possible. I hope I succeeded in writing a decent, if not witty, review that does this course justice to all the things it does and doesn't do well. If you are in the area, and want to stop somewhere for a quick nine, this course is for you.

Down to 9 Holes for Now 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 23, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Avon Town Hall Park is simply one of the prettiest parks around. Holes 1 and 2 play near a charming old barn that will warm your heart. Hole 3 plays along a gorgeous copse of trees that will absolutely ruin your day if you fail to avoid their alluring branches. Same goes for holes 8 and 9.

The layout is very intuitive and since it's only 9 holes now (more about this in cons) you can knock out a round in approximately 25 minutes.

Whoever is in charge of mowing here gets a gold star in my book. The fairways are immaculate and the rough is just deep enough to punish you without being too deep to make it difficult to find your disc.

Other than the tree lines there's not much risk of losing your discs.

There's a practice basket near the barn by hole 1

Cons:

IT'S ONLY A 9 HOLE COURSE NOW!

Honestly if this had always been a 9 hole course I probably wouldn't be so upset. They removed old holes 7-15 and to be fair it make sense the way they did it. Supposedly the forest floor for old holes 10-15 was in dire shape and it's closed to all foot traffic now.

This course is located in a multi use park and can get pretty dang busy. When you're not contending with other disc golfers there's a Gazebo along holes 1 and 9 that can attract a crowd of picnickers. Also the barn near holes 1 and 2 is a bit of an attraction for area photographers and they don't seem to appreciate people throwing plastic discs in the middle of their photo ops.

Walking path tee for holes 4 and 6.

Other Thoughts:

Rumor is the parks department intends to purchase more land and hopes to some day restore the course to a full 18 holes. There's actually an interesting article the latest PDGA magazine about this very course being reduced to 9 holes and the decision making behind it.

There's a monument to the deceased children of Hendricks County on the way from the parking lot to hole 1. I've stopped there a couple times to reflect and it really does put things in perspective. I'd rather lose a disc than lose my kid!

Avon Town Hall is probably still worth a visit if you're in the general area. I would have argued it was worth going out of your way to check out before they cut it in twain, but at the end of the day it's still fun and there's certainly a lot worse courses out there.

not bad, not great 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a nice park that's easily accessible as it sits right off the main road.
*The wooded holes are by far the most interesting even if they are the shortest.
*Easy to navigate for the most part.
*More elevation changes than most of the Indianapolis-area courses.
*Good concrete teepads.

Cons:

*Even though the course is easily accessible I fought through bad traffic to get there (probably something local people are used to and don't even consider a negative so much as a way of life.)
*Teepads are good quality but they're very short. I don't even use much of a run-up and I was frequently starting from off the back of them.
*On busy days you need your head on a swivel because there are several holes that have the teepad in a direct or near-direct line from a different hole.
*The first half of the course is somewhat open and bland with a few exceptions.

Other Thoughts:

#1. 290' Throw is uphill with an old barn to the left of the basket. The barn can be an obstacle if your throw is short and left and I think it is kind of interesting sitting there. Otherwise it's a fairly wide open shot.
#2 188' Another shot that goes uphill, but this is a short one. You'll have to get between a couple of small trees near the basket and if you go long you'll be in the woods but if you don't get a deuce you'll probably be upset with yourself.
#3 431' Woods run the length of the fairway to your left but otherwise it's pretty basic. The line to the basket is flat but the fairway does slope off slightly downhill to the right.
#4 342' Some trees in the middle of the fairway but you can go over them if you have much of an arm as they aren't all that tall.
#5 276' Fairway is wide open until you get near the basket when you have to avoid some shorter trees.
#6 234' Drive goes over a patch of deeper grass with a landing area that's not all that big as there's a walking path about 30' or so behind the basket that is OB.
#7 453' Wide open hole. The only danger is a walking path lined by some shorter trees to the right but the walking path near the basket is not OB.
#8 349' Another bit of a walk from the previous hole. You tee off in a spot cut out of the woods and the fairway then opens up. There is a walkway to the left that's OB and it's lined by some small trees.
#9 352'. This was the point where I started to think that maybe there were some interesting holes. The tee shot is pretty wide open but the basket is set back in the trees. You'll have to hit the right gap or you'll have a tricky second shot.
#10 199' Even though this is the beginning of shorter holes, you'll be in the woods for a while and things get more interesting. This hole is pretty straight but you'll have to be accurate.
#11 275' Narrow fairway that fades slightly to the left.
#12 261' Down and back up. You'll need to get the disc to fade quite a bit to the left but there's not much of a line. I also had trouble finding the basket here, as I first saw the basket for #15 that was more straight ahead than the one you're playing to.
#13. 189' This one plays downhill and the fairway turns sharply to the left as the hill gets steeper. It probably plays longer than the distance given the sharp turn you'll need. If your drive goes to far too straight you can get through the woods leaving you virtually nothing.
#14 150' Short but uphill. Ace run for certain. Throw is pretty much a straight shot.
#15 176' Another uphill short hole. The basket is pretty well-hidden between two larger old trees.
#16 342'/401' There are two pin placements for this hole. Your drive will be pretty much a wide open shot either way, but if the pin is in the shorter position it's a fade to the left behind some trees just beyond the thicker, deeper grass. The longer basket is straight forward.
#17 403' Aim at the teepad directly in front of you (provided no one is standing on it--seriously, it's right in your flighline,) and get beyond the woods on the left. The hole doglegs that direction. There are smaller trees to the right of the fairway as well.
#18 240' Straight shot but you'll need your distance to be solid as the fairway slopes off to the back/left. Trees are also thicker to the left with one larger tree to the right. If you get too far long or left you could conceivably get all the way to the lake (or the OB path.)

Solid 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good beginner to intermediate difficulty course
Concrete tees
Nice signage
No water in play (good for beginners!)
Good balance of open and wooded holes
Course does not interfere much at all with walking path
Clean, safe park
Baskets are in good shape
Practice basket by first tee
Several good opportunities for an ace
Some semi-tough wooded holes
A few longer open holes to really heave it on

Cons:

Walks between a couple tees are a bit long and without a map, could be difficult for a first-timer to navigate without a good map

No water in play (good for beginners, bad for folks wanting a bit more challenge and intimidation!)

Several holes on the front seem too short and easy, but this is also good for beginner to intermediate players

Other Thoughts:

This is one of the first disc golf courses I started playing on when picking up the sport. With time, an intermediate player (I consider myself of beginner to intermediate ability currently) should be able to shoot pro par (3's on all holes) reasonably quickly. I hope too soon!

Good Novice - Intermediate Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 16, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

For novice and intermediate players, this is a good course. Changes in elevation are nice and several holes are in the woods. This course has concrete tees and tee posts with hooks on them for your bag. The park it is in is well taken care of.

Cons:

The tees are a bit short for players who have a long run up. Holes 3 through 5 zig-zag in a way where players will often land on another hole's fairway. That can cause delays when the course is busy. There is a playground between the fairways of holes 8 and 9.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this course is fun. For me, there are a variety of shots I can choose from.

A nice start... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Approaching tee #1 is a beautiful, well-manicured lake with walking paths and benches. There is a pretty decent play area if you have little kids. Located in a very nice area with a wonderful popcorn shop only about two blocks away (Very comparable to Garrett's in Chicago if you know what I mean!). All concrete tee pads.

Cons:

Only one set of tee's; and these were perhaps 7 feet long and 4 feet wide. Several of the tee's had dropoff's in front of them from erosion or usage; so be careful or you're liable to strain something by going off the front since they're pretty short. The non-woodsy holes are all birdieable; although the forest holes will most likely add strokes to your round. Really wish there would have been a restroom and water fountain nearby...

Other Thoughts:

If you prefer pitch and put courses that are clean, this is for you. If you prefer more technical courses, then the woodsy holes will mostly fulfill your need for that. Worth playing if you are in the neighborhood near the Indy Motor Speedway as it's just a few miles away.

Nice course with some variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 30, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course starts out wide open with very little elevation and just a few stands of trees and a little bit of water in play. This part of the course gives you the chance to warm up your arm without worrying too much about accuracy, and provides some opportunities to rip a few.

The back half of the course plays in fairly dense woods, and are mostly shorter technical holes. These holes are great for working on accuracy and hitting specific lines, and there are a couple holes with some elevation.

The course is a nice balance of different types of holes, and it was nice to be able to play both open and wooded shots in the same park. The concrete tees were in good shape, and the course signage was easy to read and follow, with next tee markers. I thought the course did a decent job making use of the space available to lay out a interesting course. This course is playable for beginners, but offers a few challenges for more experienced players.

Cons:

It was a little difficult to find where the course started in the park. I parked at the Town Hall parking lot, and this ended up being quite a walk through the park to find the first hole. Some signs at either end of the park on where to begin would really help here.

Though the tee signs were nice, they were often placed so that they were in your field of view as you drive off the tee pad. I found this distracting, and wish they were behind the tee pad rather than next to the front corner.

Other Thoughts:

Overall an enjoyable course with a lot to offer. This course has much more variety to the holes than any other Indianapolis area courses, and this helped make the round more interesting. There were walking paths throughout the beginning of the course, and I had no issues but could see pedestrians being a problem on days when the park was busier.

Two sets of 9 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice layout around what appears to be a great facility. The grounds appear to be well maintained and there was not much trash around. The flow of this course actually provides discers with some options to play each nine individually or as eighteen. It's always nice to have options.

Cons:

The water and elevation changes should have been factored in, in my opinion. The front nine are basically long and open and could have been made more interesting with the inclusion of the natural surroundings. It's a multi-use facility so others people can come into play and some seem complete oblivious to the discs flying around them. So, just be careful when playing on a weekend or during a busy week night.

Other Thoughts:

The signage is pretty good and fairly easy to follow. The inclusion of the next tee indicator on most of the signs is a big help for those unfamiliar with the couse. A sign telling those who park in the town hall parking lot where the course starts would be a large help as well but all in all, nothing was too hard to find.

Front 9 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 26, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

I only had time for 9, so only a 1/2 review, but you've got pictures now! This course is beautiful and well-maintained. The front 9 was all out in the open, but they made good use of random groups of trees with a nice dogleg on #3. Tall grasses seem to be a common feature in Indy. No big deal this time of year, but I can see how it would add difficulty to errant throws in the summer. I really wanted to get into the woods on the back 9, but ran out of time. I can't wait to go back and play the whole course. I definitely recommend playing this course if you are in the Indianapolis area.

Cons:

I agree that it is too bad the lake doesn't come into play and some of the front 9 holes are kinda short - this coming from the guy that missed two 12' birdie putts. aaargh.

Could be Better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Lots of open room for those "grip it and rip it" folks out there.
Nice well kept park, with nice pathways and well marked holes.
Mix of open field holes (front 9) and wooded holes(back 9).

Cons:

No good place to park, nearest parking is good hike away from the first tee unless you park in the neighborhood to the north of the park.
Not much imagination in the design of the front nine. The back nine has a few holes that need to some work to make them truly playable.
I too wish they would have included the lake somehow in the layout. There are no shelter areas, drinking water access or facilities near the course so keep this in mind.

Other Thoughts:

This could be one of the better courses in Indiana with a rework of the layout by using the elevation available as well as the lake in the course.
