Fun for young family on vacation 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 9, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course was a perfect choice to bring my wife and 2 year old daughter to play while pushing my 11 month old daughter in the jogging stroller. Very flat with sporadic trees and mostly shorter distance holes, it's a great example of a course that will keep a newcomer to the sport interested vs losing discs in the water or deep in the woods. As more of an MA2 player, the round for me was mostly working on putter and mid approaches and my putting. Always useful practice!!

Also, I very much appreciated the longer, although narrow tee pads and newer baskets. Very easy to navigate as well.

Cons:

Not very many cons here. It's a course that doesn't pretend to be what it isn't. Very simple with one set of tee pads, 9 holes and appears to have A and B positions for baskets.

I would simply recommend proper footwear since there are some areas with ants. Not uncommon in Florida. Simply being aware of it will go a long way. But that really is the only thing that can ruin your trip at this course.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, my family and I had a fun time playing a nice short round while on vacation. When they get older and start to get the addiction, we'll certainly come back to the area and play some of the other courses it has to offer!!

Splendor In It’s Simplicity! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 19, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Azalea Park is a medium sized city park. It's completely flat with a minimal amount of scattered trees. Some holes have one or two to avoid while other holes have a few more. There is a small kiosk at the start with the course rules and a map and hole distances , both A and B. The tee pads are nicely long and grooved. The tee signs are nice colored ones giving both the A and B distances. There is a place on the sign pole for the basket location pegs but there were no pegs. A house number was attached to each sign pole. There is a fairly large, white metal next tee arrow hanging under each Chainstar basket. The course's loops around back to the start.

This is a simple course design. Other than the A and B positions, everything is simple and easy here. Only one tee pad and only one basket per hole. This is definitely a recreational course. The A distances are usually in the upper 200's or just over 300 while the B distances were usually in the low 200' range. When combined with the scarcity of obstacles, it makes for an easy, no stress round. Maybe that's why there were 6-7 groups out throwing today. The perfect Florida January day with temps in the mid-sixties and clear skies probably didn't hurt either.

# 7 might be the most interesting hole here. It plays either 225' or 280' straight ahead down a wide enough fairway with three trees on both sides. # 8 is 200' from the shorts and 300' in the long position. RHBH only have to avoid a single tree. Lefties will find this hole a little bit more challenging.

Cons:

Only 9 holes.

Scarcity of obstacles.

Recreational distance and challenge.

Flat.

Only one set of tees. (I don't consider this a con but many players will and besides I'm struggling to come up with many negative things to say here.)

Other Thoughts:

There is a reason the course was somewhat crowded today. That's because it's a easy throw. No lost discs. No water hazards. No underbrush. No stickies of any kind. No gators. It's also the primary reason that three of the groups had an elementary school boy playing. I love to see them out on the course.

If you want long, hard challenging courses, this is not for you, check Cliff Stephens. If you want water hazards galore, head to Lakeview. You want lots of thick underbrush, try Tocobaga. But if you want to bring a kid along or your girlfriend or that newbie, Azalea DGC might fill the bill.

Good practice course. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Course is located in a quiet, nice neighborhood on the grounds of a city recreation center.
- Good variety of shots and lines on each hole.
- Multiple pin positions have been added to make course longer and more difficult.
- Great chance for an ace.
- Really good course to practice your game.
- Nice lowing ceilings on some holes create a moderate challenge.
- Nice, accurate tee-signs.

Cons:

- Course is very easy and becomes old really quick.
- Not uncommon to get stuck behind a pack of beginners.
- Parents from the school allow kids to run on fairways; watch where you throw.
- Very small parking lot; usually full around the time school lets out.

Other Thoughts:

- The locals call this course "The practice facility", and that's exactly what it is. Each hole offers a lot of different lines to practice without the risk of losing a disc or taking forever to find it. Not a very difficult course, but a great course to hit up on the way home from work, or to practice some drives or putting.

- Not a course I would drive out of my way for unless you plan on playing other courses in the area.

Nice little neighborhood rec course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 26, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Entry level Rec Park Course. Fantastic Beginner course, that is good for Beginners, Casual, and Non-players. It's also a good for practice, improving ones game.

-Concrete Tee's, Tee Signs, map at start and it appeared there were Alternate pin placements. (Very nice well made sign at the start with map and distances.)

-It's a simple layout in an open field with a few trees to work around. Azalea has very easy navigation and allows for a quick simple round.

-Short to Fair lengths. Averages 200-250ft, giving it 2155ft

-Good Pin locations. They allow for one to opt for multiple lines around trees.

-Surprisingly, it had a decent fun factor. I would be happy if this course were in my neighborhood

Cons:

-It's really too small to have a whole lot of cons. It is what it is.

-Some may find this course too simple and easy.

-Park attendees are very prone to walking in, around, and across the course.

-School across the street, which could cause some excess traffic on the course and on the way to the course. Mind the time of day you are in the area.

-It's way off the beaten path for travelers looking to add another notch on the belt

Other Thoughts:

This is a simple rec park course. It's in an open field and it will be shared with other activities and park goers. This park isn't so much for the traveler, but for the local neighborhood. I played here to add the notch to my proverbial "Played" belt, but to my surprise I found I was having a good time playing here. Personally, there was a decent fun factor. That may be relative to the person playing here. I have an affinity for fun little 9 holers. Others may not share that same sentiment. This is the kind of course where I could see a bunch of my friends getting together to play. Friends that may not be regulars, but enjoy throwing a disc around every now and then.

Final Thought: If you are adding courses to your played list in the Clearwater/St Pete area, and you don't mind driving out of your way a little bit for a small course, then swing over and check it out. If you live in the neighborhood, you've got a nice little place to play.

New WCDGD course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 5, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

A recreational level course in a grassy area with sparse tree coverage. Absolutely no underbrush. Not a single tree was cut or trimmed to install this course. Grate pattern on the tee pads provide excellent traction. 'Next tee' arrows hang below each basket for easy navigation. Alt pins are planned. Plenty of room for 'unofficial' blue-level tees and gorilla fairways. Parents can see entire course from many vantage points.

Cons:

Short tee pads (only 4'x8') were requested. Not much topography. Definitely NOT enough room for 18 quality holes without serious safety issues. May be tough to play when school lets out across the street. Some nice areas by tennis courts were not used for safety considerations.

Other Thoughts:

The course will provide a nice challenge for beginners and plays a little harder than it looks for accomplished players. Many fairways offer multiple routes. Rec center will check out discs during regular business hours. More tree plantings and benches have been suggested.
