Azalea needs Azaleas drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

The disc golf course has its own section in the park, not giving much ambiguity to lead anyone to believe it'd be a goos spot to set up a picnic. I love when multi-use parks don't try to jam disc golf into the space, either making it dangerous or full of traffic jams from pedestrians. Being a multi-use park, there are plenty of trash cans along the walking path that goes along the entire course and perimeter of the park. The only tee pad that has a bench is hole 2 (see Cons), but there are plenty of benches along the walking path if your round takes you longer than anticipated.

The course plays along the perimeter of the field, utilizing every tree possible for shade on tee pads and some of the fairways. The course map is accurate, showing hole distances and both basket positions for every hole. It's cool when parks take the time and effort to put in two basket positions for each hole, giving a bit of variety for the intervals between position changes.

Tee signs have everything you want: hole map, par, distances, and sponsorship. There is a placard on every tee sign post for A and B position (see Cons). However, the baskets are easy enough to see from every tee pad, so no worries on figuring out which basket you're going to. Every basket has a sign with an arrow pointing to the next tee, as well as a red flag for indicating wind variables.

The course is amazingly rec friendly, pretty open shots with some trees coming into play throughout some fairways and along at least half of the greens. There are plenty of opportunities to get deuces every hole. While no hole is longer than 345 (290 after that), there are opportunities for recreational players to really put something behind their shots from the tee. There's no elevation or forced elevation through landscaping, a very flat course. They made use of every single tree they possibly could, making sure the course wasn't just a bunch of open air pitch-and-putt shots.

The park is well kept, the grass was recently mowed and the trash cans seem to be maintained on a frequent basis. There is plenty of parking, and there are restrooms on site both in the parking lot area and between holes 5 and 6.

Cons:

Hole 2 bench is set pretty much in front of teepad, that could be dangerous if a Richard takes the box.

The placards that show which position the baskets are in are missing the indicator buttons, that was kind of disappointing but the baskets are all visible from the tee so it wasn't anything to ruin the round.

Other Thoughts:

The course is located in Northern St Pete, less than a mile from the Tyrone Blvd Mall. The course sits adjacent to neighborhood right across the street on one side, and a vacant lot on the other side. The park has a multi-mile walking trail, tennis courts, baseball fields, basketball courts, and pavilions available for rental, giving a bit of everything for everyone to be able to get some outdoor time.

It was an easy round, I only brought a driver, mid and putter and used the driver twice. Even waiting for a group on two holes, this track only took 20 minutes to complete. It isn't anything super special aesthetically, but a nice track to stop at on your way home from work, or visiting family in the neighborhood.

Local Park Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Pretty centrally located on 22 Ave. just off 66 St. and Tyrone, so it's near main drags.
- LOTS of food and shopping with Tyrone Mall two minutes away and the Dick's there has disc golf stuff.
- Decent amount of parking.
- The course is in a rec-center type of park so there are a couple other activities with an outdoor gym, tennis and racquetball courts, and sports fields.
- The course plays clockwise around the perimeter of a large field. There are two places you can park; right off 22nd Ave. by the tennis courts or further down the street at the Rec Center building, and either place you start (hole #1 or hole #7) has a hole that finishes in the same place.
- Rec Center building is unlocked weekdays and I believe they still check out discs though I've never done this. Restrooms and water inside the building too.
- Not many trees and no water hazards to speak of.
- All distances are short and very beginner-friendly, even to the longer pins.
- The design did the best it could; you can throw different shots and some holes have enough of a shape to need a specific fade.
- Great putter practice course; even a rubber arm like mine can get to everything here with a putter.
- Good course for declaring mando's and just having fun.
- Of all the courses in the area, this one does the best after heavy rain. And very little sand means no mud problems.
- Insects are not an issue either; even fire ants are scarce here.
- The tees have great texture and grip even if they're wet; more courses need tees like this.

Cons:

- Very basic design; you don't really have to think at all out here. All the shots are pretty straightforward.
- Not much cover at all; the sun is brutal during the summer.
- Only one little gazebo near hole #1 so if you hear thunder or see rain, you don't have anywhere to wait it out besides your car.
- People tend to just come here and lie in the grass or play with their dogs, which I can't blame them for; just something to be aware of.
- The baskets don't get moved hardly ever; the last time I played here they were moved for the first time in almost a year.
- No on-course benches.

Other Thoughts:

Definitely not a "go out of the way to play" type course but I wish there were more little local park courses like this; more people could be introduced to the game that way. But this is a cool little park course that even a kid can snag some pars and maybe even a bird or two on. Sometimes we just come here to have fun or if we feel like scrubs that day. Others might not give it a 3.0, but its got baskets and it doesn't eat discs; it gets an auto 3.0 from me.
This is also the best place in the whole county for glow golf; the park is completely open and we've never once been kicked out after dark, especially during winter when the sun sets early.

Nice time here 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 25, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice distances for a chance at an Ace. Park is in a nice neighborhood. Very nice area with bathrooms. Not too woodsy, which I like. Over all, a very good time here.

Cons:

lacks some obstacles and lacks more holes. Just 9 of them on this course

Other Thoughts:

I really like this course. I get sick of those high ratings of courses that are too hilly or too heavily wooded. This course is more to my liking because of its openness and chances for an Ace due to holes not being too long.

Resources Maximized 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 2, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was wondering about this course after playing Buckhorn in Valrico (Field with baskets). But it was really a pleasant surprise. The park is basically a large rectangle. There are tennis courts and workout equipment separate from the DG area. And they don't really invade. There are sporadic trees, but whoever set up the holes, really used what was available to integrate into shotmaking. There are some low shots, some hyzers, some multi lined shots, and one hole that stretches out to 350. Most holes are around 250 with a couple shorter. It's easy to play quickly and get in as many holes as you want. The neighborhood seems pretty nice, and for a rec course, this was a great experience.

Cons:

Because there isn't any elevation or much tree cover, there are wind issues, so be prepared to deal with that while putting. Honestly, this course is a great use of the property. I would play it a lot if I lived closer.

Other Thoughts:

This would be a great early morning warm up course before playing the other harder courses in the area. It's nine holes with just enough challenge to keep your brain in the game. Nothing to complain about here. Just a fun, little course!

Rec Course Done Right 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 26, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is how you do a neighborhood rec course right. Concrete tees, nice baskets, and make the most out of the available terrain/obstacles.

The course has a high fun factor.

Family friendly, near a school, in a safe, clean environment.

Cons:

Short and easy, which may be a con for some more advanced players.

Multi-use park, watch out for nongolfers on and around the course.

Other Thoughts:

If I lived in this neighborhood, I would play this course every day.

Seasoned throwers down here on vacation may want to play some of the better 18 hole courses in the area.
