Alderson Broaddus University 18 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- baskets (Discatcher 28) with correct numbers
- The course map, available here and on the ABU website, has a nice overlay of the 18 holes on a map with the campus buildings and other features - you will absolutely need this, unless you have a guide.
- holes do a great job avoiding higher traffic areas of campus
- frequent use of elevation, with some wooded lines (particularly holes 13-18)

Cons:

- easy improvements would involve tee markers, tee pads, and tee signs, also some clearing of wooded fairways
- navigation, especially the long walk from hole 3 to 4
- watch for students & cars, particularly on holes 4 through 10 (Nevertheless, I played during a school day and never had to wait for the coast to clear.)
- some wooded holes (particularly hole 15 & 16) had very obstructed fairways and can use some clearing

Other Thoughts:

A brief search on the ABU website reveals that the current course map was uploaded in August 2018. A campus publication from September 2015 reported on the course, being "close to completion," before an inaugural tournament. It reported on the expectations of course designer, Pastor Johnathan Villers: "my hopes for this course are to create a network and become a part of the rotation of events held by the West Virginia Disc Golf Association. We want to create an opportunity to allow the community and campus to interact together and enjoy what disc golf has to offer."

The course itself is a fun play and fitting for a campus course, having holes that would work for both beginners and more experienced players. Only a few holes would challenge Advanced or Open players, though moving tees could certainly make this a suitable tournament location. Some of my favorite holes were:
3 - a longer shot with the green on a hill sloping up to the right
10 - uphill to a basket nestled next to a dorm (windows, beware!)
14 - wooded uphill tunnel
18 - another longer shot (350'?) through tight woods and rough rough

The University's course map, available on DGCR and the University webpage, is the course's saving grace for a visiting player, particularly given lack of tees and signs. I would have been lost otherwise. Access was relatively simple, although I had some difficulty driving to the Alumni Center where the course begins. Instead, I found open parking and decided to start at hole 9.

As I mentioned in "cons," there are many improvements to be made. Any semblance of tee markers and tee signs would add to the course, and the wooded fairways from 13 to 18 could use some clearing. Hole 13, in particular, felt like a filler hole. There's probably room in those woods for another good wooded hole.

Overall, the design does a great job minimizing safety concerns from overlap between holes and vehicle/pedestrian traffic. This makes the long walk from hole 3 to hole 4 much more tolerable.

Rating: As it stands now, I'm between 2.0 "reasonable" and 2.5 "decent/typical." The golf isn't as memorable or challenging as some of West Virginia's best, but there aren't many courses in this area. It's fun and probably the best course within 40 minutes.

Thanks to Alderson Broaddus University for providing the course! Please honor the university by treating its grounds and students with respect.
