fair, wooded course near the beach! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 19, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautiful wooded setting in VB proper, so close to food, beaches, etc. The mature trees create a low ceiling to challenge your woods strategy. I don't believe there is one hole where you are not dealing with a ceiling at some point. In most cases, entirely from tee to green. The forest is real, but the flight lines are not impossible. They are mostly doable from the teepads. And those that are tougher (nos. 10 and 12) are not impossible. The floor of the course is nicely swept, so that there is little rough to be exercised about. Of course, there is real vegetation around creek holes nos. 16 and 17, but I think you have to mess up pretty badly for said vegetation to be a real issue. All in all, the course is challenging without being overwhelming. Being a poor woods player, I very much appreciate that.

Cons:

Some fairways are too close to others; the paved trail alongside holes 1-3, 12-13 is a real issue for the bomber (said path is both OB and well-traveled by pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.). The course routing can be confusing. I played the course in a tournament, and though I had a practice round, I didn't find no. 12 until tournament day. UDisc didn't even help me there, but I was being pushed around by other players (so distracted). Yes, it gets busy. I'm not local to VB, so I don't know if there are some days that are less busy than others. I played most of my practice round on a late Friday afternoon, the tournament on a Saturday (all day), and finished my incomplete practice round on a Monday morning. Monday morning perhaps was as busy as late Friday afternoon. There are not enough benches. At least from the white tee, the holes are fairly short. That actually isn't a complaint for me, but those of you more skilled may find this less challenging. I'm not sure playing the (long) red tee to the (long) red basket will be markedly more exciting for you; someone who has played/reviewed that will know best. During the tournament, I played red to yellow in Rd 1, and white to yellow in Rd 2.

Other Thoughts:

The course is in a very nice city park in a suburban area of Virginia Beach. There are other sports/park facilities including picnic shelters, basketball courts, the aforementioned bicycling/walking trail, children's playgrounds, 1 or 2 baseball fields, tennis courts. There may be a soccer field or 2 also; I don't remember now. The park office collects lost discs. The restroom is not so far from hole 1 and is near the north end of the parking lot where disc golfers would park. If you are on vacation to VB, playing both Bayville and Munden Point during your stay would be most enjoyable.

DG History - on the East Coast 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 20, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Two tees and two baskets on every hole. So you have 4 separate courses, something for every skill level. Baskets are yellow and red.
Great tee signs on every hole.
All the baskets are in good shape and easy to spot.
Two practice baskets.
In a multi-use park (tennis, ballfield, playground, basketball) but the course sits in a section separate from those. The only possible interaction is with a walking path on the first few holes.
Seems to be kept up very well by the Parks crew and local club.

Cons:

Park gate was locked when I got there for my early morning round. (So I drove past the park and parked in the retirement community lot, no problem!) The park has a walking path through it, why would the gate be locked?!
I could see this course getting crowded on busy days, with so many baskets and tees in a relatively small area. But I still like the variety!!
#18 was a so-so finishing hole, nothing exciting about it!

Other Thoughts:

The oldest course in the state of VA and my first Steady Ed original !! I imagine it wasn't originally laid out with 2 baskets per hole, but added later for extra challenge and variety.
The large, old-growth trees in the park provided plenty of obstacles without making it hard to find discs. You have to throw a variety of shots, several holes had more than one option off the tee. A pleasure to play.
#16 provided the only elevation on the course, a small mound with the yellow basket on top, nice little change of pace.
The only water on the course is a drainage ditch beside #16 and in front of #17 tee. This made #17 interesting as you had to clear a mando after clearing the ditch.
#13 is longer than most of the holes at 400', so you have an air it out hole, but still hit your gap.
I believe there are benches on just about every hole, along with the tee signs and cleanliness, further proof this course is well taken care of.
Just a really neat layout where players of different abilities can play in one group, and each be challenged, but not overwhelmed. In most cases, the longer tee provided a different look at the hole.
Now, if the local club can get a course laid out at Mount Trashmore, they will have their elevation course to compliment Bayville.
#99 on my course list, one more to the Century mark!!

This Course Caught me off Guard 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 12, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very technical, at least for a beginner like I am. There is a lot of variety in this course, and it is like 8 courses built into one. The trees make this a fun course and it taught me a lot. As far as I have seen, all of the players seemed to be really nice and courteous.

Cons:

This park is very popular. Not too bad of a con since everyone is super nice here.

Other Thoughts:

I really need to practice more, because this course really challenged me. I found a fun game look at all the "Next Tee" signs as some of them have things written on them that made made me laugh.

Great play while in VA beach 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Very nice signage at each tee complete with bag hangers for those who like to use them.

-Two well marked tee pads and baskets for every hole.

-While most holes are wooded, they do require a different mix of shots.

-Thank you for not going crazy with mandos. The couple that are present are well placed. Some courses get way to gimmicky with mandos.

-Great next tee singage. This was my first time playing and I never had to consult the course map on my phone. Kudos for this!

Course is well maintained. As I was playing there was a guy going around with a blower and making sure all tees were clear of debris.

-Lots of trash cans and benches

Cons:

-Would be nice if they had the area to throw in a couple open holes for more mix.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course around 7:00 a.m. on a Thursday morning and had the disc golf course to myself the entire time. There were a few walkers and joggers, but they never came into play. Large parking area and nice course information board are what you are greeted with. Nice practice basket with plenty of room to warm up located next to parking area. Two tees and baskets for each hole. Both tees have their own signage, which was really nice. I personally played the red tees to the yellow baskets, which gave you a tougher tee shot and shorter basket location. This course is clean and well maintained and provides a lot of shade for those hot summer days. If you are in the VA beach area and looking for a nice round, then don't hesitate to stop by this park.

Pretty Good 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 29, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Concrete tee pads

- Nice park

- Clean

- Trashcans aplenty

- Two tees & two pins at each hole

- Relatively easy navigation

- Good variety of pin placements to allow several different shot variations

- Locals selling new & used equipment on site

- Local club has offers many events throughout the year and they're posted prominently on the bulletin board at #1

Cons:

- Really busy course. Like CRAZY busy. I guess with this really being the only legitimate course in Virginia Beach it was bound to be packed. However, the over-crowding borders on the ridiculous. Played early in the morning solo and it wasn't too bad -- still had to play through a couple people -- but by the afternoon my buddy and I literally waited on every hole. 6-domes and 7-domes were everywhere and a couple of them were real douchebags.

- Down leaves makes finding your disc difficult

- No topless Hooters girls frolicking along the #8 fairway

Other Thoughts:

I was stationed in Norfolk for three years before I got into disc golf, so when visiting friends for Thanksgiving I was eager to check out the local layout and introduce my buddy to the game. Bayville came as advertised and was the perfect course to teach my friend and his son. Being a fairly open course but having enough woodland to make it challenging, they enjoyed the rounds immensely.

As stated by others, this is a perfect course to introduce new players to the game, but with the alternate tees and baskets on each hole it will definitely give advanced players a run for their money. The course got really busy when we were there, but the locals were friendly and weren't shy about letting faster groups play through. Get there early if you want a fast round.

All in all, Bayville is definitely worth checking out if you find yourself in the Hampton Roads area.

Technical and Short 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 11, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

As the latest review mentions, the course has been remodeled, so the sign at the front of the course and links here are now incorrect.

During the remodel, the course was stretched, from 20 holes down to 18. This helped some of the issues when there are a lot of folks playing, and some of the shorter holes are a little longer thanks to some nice new teepads.

There are actually three teepads for most holes: red and white (concrete), and blue (natural), and two sets of baskets (red & yellow). There are a couple that may still have the yellow tee indicators, but the others are present at each hole.

The new course plays longer, but still not as long as Munden Point. Same great mix of technical shots, with some of the new red lines being quite difficult (read: you better be able to shape your shot). They also introduced some elevated pins (Hole 4's red basket is about 6-7ft tall). Trees also play a bigger factor in the new layout - and there are several mandos throughout. If you have a mix of BH and FH, you're pretty much set to succeed here, and BH only players can do pretty well given you can shape.

Cons:

The tightness is still there, but with the redesign, most tees are relatively about 20-30ft from the next closest pin.

Wait times can still be a pain. If you play solo, you can get through a round in about an hour. If you're playing in a group on a nice day, set aside about two hours.

With the redesign, the only major thing lacking is hole signage - but good news: it's on the way. Minor issue: no benches, but they are supposed to be on the way also.

When playing from red to red, you're going to be challenged unless you're an intermediate/advanced player or above. Some of the distances really should be par 4s in my opinion - there's a 500ft. shot (I believe hole 11) that forces you to bomb a fairly tight line or suffer a pretty difficult upshot because of the trees.

Other Thoughts:

Kudos to the guys who redesigned the course. This really is the happiest medium for new players and more advanced players. For returning players, both tee pad AND basket locations have been moved on most holes - but sight to basket is pretty clear.

Another important note: this course in completely different between winter and the warm seasons. Be prepared to throw lower drives in the warmer seasons, because there are a lot of little limbs that seem to attract discs and really kills what would be great drives.

I appreciate one of my biggest gripes being covered in the redesign: Next Tee signage is located on each hole.

Also, for anyone who wants to make this your "home course" or sorts, don't. While this is a wonderful course to play, getting settled in here will hurt your abilities to play on more wide open, longer courses.

Great Course for Beginners and Advanced Players 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Fairly Open Layout
-Older Course that has matured nicely
-Multiple Tees and Baskets
-Excellent Signage
-Good Scoring Opportunities
-Very Easy to get to
-Decent Ace opportunities
-Nice mix of shot lines required for success

Cons:

-Fairly Open Layout
-Alternate Tees can be hard to find
-Concrete tees can be slick when wet
-Can be very busy
-Fairways are close together
-Fairly short course

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to introduce new players to. Fairways are open and it is all but impossible to loose disc. There is virtually no undergrowth. Very nice concrete tee pads and signage. 2 concrete tees, 2 natural tees, and 2 baskets per hole. 20 unique holes. Course is close to the interstate and various convenience stores and restaurants. The Putt'r Van is usually there if one would like to get new discs and enjoy conversation.

It seems the course is getting a good deal of tree work being done what will make the course much more open and take away some of the challenge. Most fairways are roughly graded mulch of poor quality.

This is really is a fun course to play. In the summer it is one of the cleanest courses in the area and undergrowth is never a problem. It can be one of the heaviest played courses in the area, so traffic can be an issue. The multiple tees and baskets creates very nice variation on the same course. The player can adjust the tees and baskets to play the course at their desired difficulty. The local club does a good job with leagues on Mondays and regular tournaments. I have no problem driving 45 minutes from my house to play the course regularly and it is a great addition to the area

Where it all started for me 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 10, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Will challenge players of all skill levels. There are 2 holes (white and red) for each hole along with 4 possible tee boxes (white, blue, red and gold) making a total of 8 different ways to play the course. The gold tees are fairly new and may require some help from the locals to find all of them. Despite our outward appearance, we're quite friendly and will help you with anything you need. You can pretty much catch someone playing at any time of day. There's benches at each hole to rest and there's also two bonus holes making this a 20 hole course. The Bayville Disc Golf Club does an excellent job maintaining the course and are a fun bunch to hang with. They host regular tournaments including summer weekly tournaments on Monday nights and monthly tournaments as well. If you're new to the area and are looking for some dg buddies, just show up. You'll meet plenty.

Cons:

Can get crowded pretty quick. I told ya' there's always someone out there. Not as many trees as there used to be. Most holes are wide open playing the shorts.

Other Thoughts:

Great place to play as a beginner or a pro.

Suitable for newbies and pros alike 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 11, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I had planned on playing at Bennett's creek (my local course) but it was closed due to a cycling event so I drove over to Bayville to check it out. I found the fairways to be more open and forgiving compared to some others in the area and is suitable for players of all skill levels. There are plenty of trees to penalize errant shots and to provide a nice challenge but its not so much that newcomers to the sport would get discouraged. The lack of shrubs, bushes and long grass was appreciated as well as it reduced the amount of time searching for discs. Being able to see my disc land each shot and not have to search in the brush, trees etc was nice as well. I enjoy playing on technical courses a lot but it is good to know that is I am hankering for a more open park course Bayville will fit the bill. Here are some other observations:
1: Large map at hole 1 showing the map of the entire course.
2: There is a practice basket between holes 1 and 10 so you can warm up before your round.
3: Each hole is well sign posted and has a simple map so you see where you should be aiming.
4: Each hole has two baskets and two tee pads so it is suitable for all skill levels. Plus playing to the alternate red baskets provides something a little different.
5: It is fairly easy to find the next tee especially if you are playing the short tees to yellow baskets.
6: Concrete tee pads on all holes. There are also benches and places to hang your bags on most holes. Plenty of trash cans too.
7: Its pretty difficult to lose a disc here even in autumn. As long as you know roughly where the disc landed you should be good.
8: There are enough trees and obstacles to challenge the advanced player but not so many that it would discourage new players.

Cons:

I enjoyed the course and have very positive thoughts about it and plan to visit again in the future. There were just a few minor things that you should be aware of.
1: Some of the fairways are close to each other. Its not a major issue but you do need to be aware of people around you. (I had a few discs come close to me during my round)
2: Not a lot of variety in the course. Its mainly a case of throw the disc straight down the fairway and avoid the trees. There are a few holes that stood out like Hole 16 (yellow) and hole 17 so its not all the same. Again a minor thing.
3: No big open holes so your distance driver will likely spend a lot of time in the bag.

Other Thoughts:

1: The course can be very popular, particularly on weekends but most groups are friendly and will let you play through if they are holding you up.
2: This is the perfect course to introduce friends and family to the sport. It will allow them to develop their throwing skill while having a good time and not being frustrated.

Unexpected Surprise 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 30, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Different ways to play each hole, increasing replay value.
Practice basket
No elevation. Great for bags/carts with wheels
Nice benches and garbage cans
Concrete pads
Nice community of golfers, most people who play here are locals or vacationing nearby.
Shade,Shade,Shade! Great for stayng cool.
Original design by Ed Headrick
Front 9 and Back 9 easy access from parking lot and dedicated lot for course away from kids park.

Cons:

Navigation is tough to new players.
Long layout has potential to be a tournament caliber course, It would have to have staggered tee times or smart pad/baksket choices forlane intersect concerns.
Fairways are sometimes too close to each other and an errant throw can sometimes land where someone else is playing.
Some fairway signs have some conversation between 2 or 3 people about cig butts on ground or some other nonsence, was comical did not take away from sign purpose.
signs need to be remarked for out of town people, as there are blue and yellow pads which are covered. [red pads were more challenging than the blue here]
Can get busy, small kids can venture into the area from the giant playgrounds so watch where you throw.
Mandos are for saftey only not for lane direction for difficulty.
You are almost never forced to make a specific shot or shoot a certain line here. But if you are inaccurate there are enough trees to punish you.
No elevation. Not the fault of the course.
Long walk to restrooms, children and close view to roadway and nearby houses may be concern if your bladder can't hold it. Aim with caution.
Time of year can be a potential issue, lots of trees may be issue in fall/winter from down leaves,

Other Thoughts:

Stroller friendly
If you're looking for a 4 or 5 star course, you'll have to drive a distance.
If you are vacationing at Virginia Beach, this place is worth checking out.
I only played current red long-red long (once), shot a 55 was fun, going to play the yellow [short-short] before I leave town with
a lid disc for nostalgic reasons. I played an old course in great shape,
club recently added gold pads [found out after] They have some singles event/leauge on mondays,
after walking around aimlessly after ten holes a local club member, who joined me and my brother on the back 9 think his name was tony[ i hope so bad with names, you were putting with grid avairs] acted as our guide and was a blast to play with. Great time.

Pros:

This course has been the standard default for disc golfers for years for good reasons including (but not limited to) the highly visible pins, reasonably well-maintained grounds, and realistic pars. With multiple tees and enough variety in hole layouts Bayville manages to keep each round interesting.

Cons:

The fairways are a bit tight. It's not unusual to hear "fore!" called out during your game. The traffic can get a little heavy at times, but even then most of the players are courteous. 13b and 13c are superfluous.

Other Thoughts:

What I love most about Bayville is how reasonable the pars are. Every hole is a par 3, some are easier birdies than others, but I doubt you'll finish -20. (If you do, you need to step up to the next tee level.)

To my knowledge on hole six on the front nine has never been aced from the Pro "T". If you like a challenge try the pro T 14. like wise give the pro "T" on 18 a look But to my mind hole 13's pro "T" is as tough as they come.

Cons:

Some of the fairways are a little close together. So keep your eyes open. This course has a lot of traffic on the weekend and friday afternoon. plan accordingly. And be patient with the newbies.

Beautiful 3-par flagship course of Norfolk 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 20, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful location dedicated solely to DG -- a walking trail wraps around the perimeter of the course and it has never posed a hazard / problem to my game.

After the early spring leaves are raked up, copious amounts of wood chips are laid down -- I love this as a playing surface.

Rarely muddy, and the surface is never cluttered by troublesome foliage. You rarely spend time disc searching (again, after raking).

Trees are very tall and are sparse enough to be optimal course hazards, but close enough to provide a unique, beautiful, and immensely helpful foliage canopy. It is almost like walking through a giant DG "outdoor stadium."

Maintenance and upkeep are top notch.

Hangers, trash cans, and signs at nearly every holes.

Concrete tee pads in excellent condition.

Regular movement of pins keeps course fresh.

Cons:

If you play in early spring before the course is raked, watch your disc very carefully -- the carpet of leaves is thick.

The course is amost entirely flat.

That's about it. I love this course.

Other Thoughts:

This is the Norfolk / Va Beach area flagship course. A must play.

Still a great place to hang out. 99% of the people are very cool, though some of the uber-regulars are weirdos. I'd swear some of them actually live at the course and would bleed bong water if you poked them...

Most people are very nice and will let you play through or tag along if you ask nicely. Have fun!

Good Stuff 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is one of my three "home courses" since I live in the Tidewater area. There is a mini tourney on Monday evenings Spring-Fall which is very well run. $5 with a $1 ace pot, Rec, Adv, and Open divisions. If you come when the weather is decent there are lots of people here, but I have yet to see it packed like ball golf courses. Usually there's no trouble playing through. On a weekday morning, in the winter, or when the weather is bad you'll have the place to yourself. There are 20 holes rather than just 18 like most courses in the area. The two additions (labeled 13b and 13c) add some variety and challenge. Just watch out for the leaf ditch. I kid you not there are 2 or 3 feet of leaves in that ditch. It's a disc eater. The biggest pro of this course is that over half the holes have two tees and two separate baskets, giving you four combinations to play: short-short (pitch and putt, 200-300 foot holes with main obstacles being 5 or 10 large trees on each hole), short-long, long-short, and long-long (easy to double-bogey some of these, birdies are nearly impossible.) This really helps with the variety. It's free. Tee pads are longer than the other courses in the area and every single one of them is paved. Lots of bag posts, benches, trash cans, parking etc.

Cons:

Can get muddy due to lack of grass. Small area for 20 holes so you hear a lot more "Fore" than at the other courses in the area. No big wide open "huck it" holes. Even the long holes favor the "Roc down the middle" style of play due to the plethora of trees. Just a few true fairways, just trees every 15 feet throughout the park with baskets strategically placed. On the other hand, you can often throw multiple lines on every hole-anhyzer or hyzer for instance. Despite what other reviews say, there aren't a lot of straight shots. I can only think of 6 holes that you can throw straight at the basket, and that's just in the short-short configuration. Usually you've got to have at least a little hyzer or anhyzer to really park it.
