No good for visitors 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

I can see the potential in this course.
+Seems to be a nice layout.
+Holes laid out in a variety of lengths and directions.
+Only public/free/18-hole course in the area.
+Fairways well mowed

Cons:

I'll preface this with the fact that I'm not a newbie. I've been playing for year and have played dozens of courses in MI, NC, TX, and CO.

NO TEES!! I saw some reviews talking about maybe some gravel or mulch, but after the first tee box (which is just a patch of dead grass), I literally just teed off from wherever seemed to be a slightly worn area. Maybe no one plays in the summer so everything is over grown, but seriously, i looked at the course map and just guessed as to where I should tee off from. I understand some public park courses not having the funding for nice cement pads and tee markers, but can't someone from the area go out there with a shovel and make a real tee?

Along with no tees, comes the fact that you have no idea where the next hole is because you don't know which direction you should be going. I saw another reviewer make a comment on this, and just assumed they were being overly critical, thinking "Of course you need to scout out where a basket is if you've never played the course before". But usually you have a general idea of where you're going. But even with the course map loaded on my phone, I literally wandered around looking for the basket, and once i found it, I walked back to where i had come from trying to figure out what would function as the fairway.

Be careful assuming anything. I threw my disc into a pond when i over shot the WRONG hole. I was throwing at what i believed to be 3, over shot it by 10 feet, only to find out that was the 17th basket anyway.

Other Thoughts:

If you live real close and can take the time and effort to get to know the terrain, I believe this could be a pretty decent little course. But for anyone that is considering making a trip to head up and play the Leander courses, most are on private property, and this one is just not worth it, stay at home.

Bring your boots! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 11, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very challenging for newbies like me due to the course being very thight in spots. Good or bad, since the trees dropped their leaves, it made it easier to find your disc and get through holes that wouldn't normally be there. The stream and ponds all had water in them, which added to the difficulty.

Cons:

Due to the rain this fall/winter, this course was VERY muddy. In fact, sometimes you had to invent your way to the next shot/hole due to the conditions.

Other Thoughts:

It would be nice if the city would put in permanant tee pads instead of the bark chips.

Pros:

Challenging course with many different types of holes. Technical shots as well as wide open and short and long. Creeks and ponds to add to the mix.

Cons:

Rough can be pretty rough, sometimes hard to find your disc.

Other Thoughts:

The course is starting to shape up more and more, grass is mowed more often now a days and the rough is becoming less thick :)

Jungle Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 1, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

**New** So, the Parks Department has taken a renewed interest in their course and have recently installed Tee Signs on all 18 holes (excluding the long tee boxes I designed for tournament use). Course is better maintained then it has been in the past, and the fairways, however narrow they may be, are always mowed. The rough, however, will leave you questioning your decision to even get close to the hairy jungle of sharp stingy things that is the Benbrook rough. (Generally referred to as Hell Bush) - The annual event at this course is named 'Children of the Thorn' and for good reason!

This park gets a good rating from me because its better than a decent/typical course. They made good use of the available land and created several interesting shots. Smart play is required on this one. Tee signs are placed near the standard tee boxes, there are long boxes on a handfull of holes, but they are not properly marked for use.

Cons:

Hellbush, briars, and everything that is sharp, stings, or is itchy resides in this park. Be cautious and stay in the fairway or else!
**New** If you're on hole 4, it may be wise to peek out passed the basket and look down what is now hole 15's fairway to make sure you dont take a disc to the face while putting on 4. Terrible re-design of hole 15 has now placed players on hole 4 at great risk, be advised!

Other Thoughts:

When this course is trimmed up it is a blast. Some holes lack creativity but, you do what you can with what you have.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very overgrown with vegetation in some spots, which makes accuracy a must, as well as being fluent with a variety of shots. Throwing a tomahawk here and there is a lot easier than trying to throw a hyzer or anhyzer around a patch of brambles or trees. Great for accuracy building, this is one of my harder practice courses. If you dont have good accuracy now, you will learn :]

Cons:

The thorn bushes, trees, weeds, and general vegetation prove to be a problem when finding discs. Unless you have a hawks eye, be prepared to search for a while. Also, on hole 5, there is a pond right in front of the basket. Although it has dryed up a great deal, it is now much like Quicksand! Watchout out!
This course is not beginner frendly, and definitely not disc friendly.

Other Thoughts:

Bring your Golden Retriever.

benbrook 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's good to have a tough course in the area. Aside from Wilco, the other courses in Leander tend to be 9 hole beginner neighborhood park courses. I played this course before it opened and again recently. The open holes are easier when the grass has been cut. The "creek" holes have gotten tougher as vegetation has continued to make the fairways tighter. There is a good mix of holes challenging you to throw a sidearm here and a tomahawk there.

Cons:

Definitely take a map the first couple times. The tee pads need a lot of work. If the parks dept. can keep some of the fairways cut to a decent height, play can run a lot smoother. I remember when Cat Hollow opened, it had the same problem and now play on it is faster with maintained fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Tough holes are the ones you remember and make the game memorable.

Pretty nice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 24, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

very nice course, they had recently cut it and everything was green. there is an awesome hole that you have to tomahawk over some trees to get to the basket, maybe 100ft. pretty cool. There are times when you loose track of what hole you should be on because there is no signs. Just take a map and look for the mulch.

Cons:

trees are so thick that if you throw on top of them you cant get your disc. almost like a canopy. lost tye dye valkyrie on hole 13.ug

Other Thoughts:

Would be a really great course if they put tee box signs and put maybe concrete tee boxes or just new mulch.

Pros:

There are a wide array of shots to be had. There is a beautiful creek that runs through the course that has water in it every time I play it.

Cons:

Some high grass at times. Hard to find tees at times. 4-5 really open holes that get boring.

Other Thoughts:

A great course located close to 5 more courses in the Greater Austin Area.

Starting to break in? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

We didn't get to finish all the holes, but were able to get a general feel for this new course.
For being built between suburban subdivisions, there are some very interesting holes here, crammed into a creek bottom.

It is nice to see Leander getting some disc golf courses, and as this one gets more use and tamed a bit, it will shape up to be a fine course.

I like that you get started with a few open holes, though the back yards on three come into play, and that isn't any fun. Once your arm is warmed up then you get into some pretty hairy alley holes. Though there are fair tunnels on all the holes we saw, the rough is still pretty fresh and nasty. I imagine that this will slowly beat back as the course gets used.

All in all a good mix of open and technical, just give yourself some time to find it the first time.

Cons:

Well the primary rough on the open holes has apparently been mowed, because I didn't find this to be a problem. That being said, there are still some pretty frightening little thickets to put your disc into here.

Also, the "pond" on hole 5 I think was mostly dried up and looked shallow, but the mud is quicksand variety, and expect to sink up to your knees if you venture too close. With the pin just across the "water" accuracy is at a premium and the beginner and int. players I was with decided to save some time and anguish and skip this one.

There were a lot of kids running loose in the park when we were there, but they did not interfere with our game.

It is definitely easy to get lost until you figure this place out. I thought it was interesting that there is a sign on the practice basket, to let you know it is for practice, but there were no other signs on the course, with the exceptions of numbers on the baskets.
Try to follow someone, or just imagine kinda a figure eight that starts by the practice basket goes out to the right, crosses over, swoops back around and crosses over again back to the car. (That prolly doesn't help, but what the heck).

We were able to jump some holes to make it back to the car by dark without just having to walk a bunch and miss opportunity to play.

Other Thoughts:

I wonder what this property looked like before the course was here. I suspect is has some history to it. I look forward to playing again here and getting in all 18 holes. I'll just make sure I've got my dog to rescue any discs I can't get.

Has potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 23, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

I like a course that forces you to stay on the fairway. Play clean and you are rewarded, play off the fairway and you loose strokes. Some fun and interesting holes.

Cons:

Needs to have signs.

Other Thoughts:

Fun tricky little holes and some long narrow tunnels. Plenty of OB and a little water. Has a good mix of fun stuff. Hole 18 was pretty cool with a big annie on second shot for a drop in 3. I will play this course again.

Interesting holes, overgrown rough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Several interesting holes where water came into play along with several moderately wooded holes.

Cons:

Like others have said, they keep the fairways mowed, but the rough grows several feet high and has many sticker-burr weeds in it. The tees are just dirt and, while the course was pretty easy to follow, it was not marked. Virtually no significant elevation changes on any of the holes.

Other Thoughts:

If they would tend the rough just a little this course would warrant at least a 3 rating.

Subpar, overgrown and poorly marked. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 11, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

The fairways were mowed nicely and the baskets were quality. Some of the holes had some challenging risk/reward shots but most of these could be easily played around without costing a stroke.

Cons:

You have to walk every hole to see where the pin is located prior to teeing off. There are a number of very tight tunnel shots and if your disc goes into the rough you can spend quite a bit of time looking for them in the undergrowth. We played as a twosome at Int-Adv skill level and probably spent 45 minutes looking for discs in the rough. There are a few spots where you have to pass by a basket to get from another teepad to basket so if this were ever heavily played there could be some issues with discs flying at you.

Other Thoughts:

I played almost a 3rd of the course with a Buzzz and there was 1-2 which a putter can be used to drive with.

There are a number of holes where water can come into play. I really wouldn't recommend this course for a beginner or someone just starting as an intermediate, not really due to difficulty, but because you'd probably spend more time looking for discs than playing.

I'd play again in a tournament setting, otherwise, probably not worth the drive past Wilco or Cat Hollow.

Benbrook Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 23, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I keep trying this course hoping they have made improvements but they never do. About 1/3 of the holes on this course are very interesting and fun (if you can find their teepads).

Cons:

There are no signs but if you find the dirt teepad for #1, just in front of the three large rocks by the parking area, the course can be followed with a little luck.

This would be a pretty good course if they would fix the one major problem; The rough is too punishing. They mow the fairways and leave everything else to go wild. Not if, but when you miss the narrow fairways, you have to search knee high weeds or briar filled woods to find your disc. The weeds are so high that I didn't even know there was a creek down the middle of the course until my disc went in it. All five of our group were covered with scratches from the briars and brambles that make up the secondary rough (outside the neck high weeds). You will lose discs at this course!

Other Thoughts:

Let the creek and trees be the hazards, not the weeds. Until then the fun factor is just not there.
