One of the Finest 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 18, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

27 holes -- that's an experience you can't get in many places.
Wide variety between short and long holes.
Terrain varies from wide open throwing holes to tight tree clusters protecting the basket from approach.
Multiple pin positions guarantee a changing course every time.
Large tee boxes provided plenty of room for winding up.
Layout tends to prevent cross traffic.
Good mix between downhill and uphill fairways, with some that are mostly level.
Every shot in the bag is needed here and people that bring the baby carriage might actually use every disc.
Brooms, benches, garbage cans are available on almost every hole.
A general lack of weeds mean the roller is in play on many fairways.
Plenty of parking and a decent practice area.
Unlike certain high level courses, you never get the sense that the designers wanted to create some holes where you were likely to lose a disc after a bad shot, although the park certainly has that potential.

Cons:

Popular course given its quality and the large number of local golfers. You will find yourself waiting on occasion.
It's dusty, but that's not unusual in California.

Other Thoughts:

Outside of Kirkwood, no other course in the Tahoe area compares to the Bijou. If you have only once choice for a course to visit in the area and don't have the time to run out to Kirkwood, then you must play the Bijou course. Zephyr Cove is a manzanita fest and North Shore is not worth the trip in comparison. It's right in town, easy to get to, and a full test of your skills.
A beginner could still have fun here, but they need to temper their expectations, have walking endurance, and face the frustration of holes that have fair layouts, but are surrounded by trees.

Nice long course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 3, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Tee signs are very helpful, especially with the varied basket positions
-Most, if not all, Baskets are totally or partially visible from the Tee, or the walk to the tee.
-Baskets themselves are in good condition
-This course has very little elevation, but if there is a slight hill or bump, it is used.
-I wouldn't call this a wooded course, at least for the first 10 or so holes, but what teees there are come into play and make you take a more interesting line than a lazy Hyzer.
-This is a fairly popular course, lots of people playing, and it has a good vibe about it, which many popular courses lack.
-The few holes that have benches have good benches
-This course is located in a typical California wood, which is quite pretty
-Massive variety of shots, some holes have lots of open air to try stuff out

Cons:

-Fairways are really really dusty (in the summer when I played) expect to clean you discs
-Navigation is tricky without a map, not impossible, but harder than it needs to be.
-After hole 12ish, the rough becomes really bad, tall grass Devours discs.
-One hole crosses a road, which is obviously not good
-This course gets a 2.5/4 on the New Shoe Index, my shoes were covered in dust

Other Thoughts:

Park in which the course is located has a wide variety of available activities.

The Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Multiple pin placements for every hole, some with 5. course can be totally different from 2 weeks ago. There are two practice pins/practice area enclosed by parking
The holes have excelent sinage that is updated with the movement of pins and addition of new placements. This course is always improving, more pin placements, better tee pads, pinecone and needle removal going on all year. If the winter was lame (like this year) the course is fairly playable. A variety of hole shapes and lenghts, the front 9 being typically a little shorter with at least 5+ birdie runs, the back 18 being longer and some tough/tech pars. Multiple shot possibilities and fairways for a lot of the holes. lots of tree coverage, so finding the best line can be a fun challenge.
No mandos. there are so many trees that they arent really necessary and you are free to attact the holes as you will. Easy to get to, in the heart of south lake tahoe, mountain views, and a giant meadow on east side of back 18 make for a nice atmosphere. Some mellow elevation changes throughout the course, not to monotonous as some flat courses can be. Windy days are playable, as the back 18 are down lower and mostly wooded. The ground is mostly clear of brush, kinda hard to lose discs, and bring your dogs.

Cons:

The biggest con is how crowded it can be. Near the college, subdivisions and middle of town, there is no shortage of loud kids and ten-somes around. The course seems to be under construction a good amount of the time(not always a bad thing.) There will be a bmx pump track in the near future that may alter some holes. And the trees... man, some days it seems like they have no mercy, and there are a lot. There used to be some fun water obstacles in a few fairways, but the drought has dried them up. A tee pad or 3 lies close-ish to pin placements, around 30 feet or so.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a few miles from my house, and I couldnt be happier, as this course is well above average. The front 9 and back 18 are laid out seperate, but are very close together, allowing for an easy walking 27, or a quick 9, or a mix n match of holes that cross over (crowd allowing.) A few years ago when some of the new pin placements were going in, some trees were cut down to open up new fairways, but not enough to affect the difficulty of the course. Curious to see what will happen with the bmx track in the next few years.

In Tahoe? Play this course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great locals to play and help you navigate this course. Not that it is really needed, but having some local help is a pro in my book. Great tee pads. Baskets are kept up really well and bright yellow to locate. The maps at each tee are great and well laid out for the basket placement. Washer system helps those that have not played before locate the basket. Fresh air, great views, long and technical shots. Not too many short holes, which is good if you have a big arm.

Cons:

I don't think I can come up with anything that would be a con for this course. If I had to choose something, it would be the mass amount of pine cones on the ground. That should be taken care of in the next few weeks with the help of the locals who keep this course looking nice.

Other Thoughts:

Zephyr Cove is a more challenging course, so use this one as a warm up before heading to play Zephyr. Take some water, lots of water, when you play and make sure you pack out or throw away what you take in. Keep this course looking beautiful for others to play.

S. Lake Disc Golf Paradise 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Bijou is a great addition to the Lake Tahoe area courses. Unlike the other area courses Bijou is relatively flat. There are a few minor elevation changes but nothing over 40-50 ft. It also is the largest course in Tahoe with 27 interchangeable holes. There are multiple pin positions per hole. Pin positions can change the same hole from a 200ft par 3 to an 800 ft par 5. The local club takes excellent care of the course using a hole adoption program to make sure each hole gets the attention it deserves. As of this summer (2013) there are new tee signs that include all of the pin locations and their correct distance from the tee. With a wide variety of tight and open, left and right pins this course offers something for everyone. The course layout is also very convenient, there are 3 separate holes you can start from in the parking lot and two practice baskets.

Cons:

On a weekend with nice weather this course can get bogged down. During a tournament play is slow at best... Only other con would be the dust during a dry spell, bring a good towel.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to play, with a good club backing it. There are monthly tag rounds and weekly doubles during the summer. The crowds can be frustrating at times. A close neighbor and highly underutilized course is Zephyr Cove only 10 minutes away. It's the complete opposite of Bijou and much more challenging.

Fun times in South Lake 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 27, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Bijou is a great 27 hole course set in beautiful South Lake Tahoe. Nice rubber tees, large pine trees, shop on site, multiple pin locations, and great tee signs. The course is very well maintained by the locals and most are very friendly to play with. This is a great tourney course allowing for good flow and challenging layouts. Plenty of trash cans, benches, and loop backs to the car area. Summertime in Lake Tahoe is one of my favorite places to be in the summer time. Good parking that starts you at hole 1 and finishes you at hole 27. There is a good putting area with cement markers for putting contest or practice.

Cons:

I personally do not have any issues with this course but I will mention some that I have heard. Wintertime DG in Tahoe is difficult due to snowfall. Summertime can be dry and dusty. The front nine is pretty easy (unless if set long). Can get pretty crowded but most people let you pass. Dogs have to be on leash or you can get a ticket. I'm not 100% but drinking is not allowed in the park. Lack of elevation for being in the mountains (I find that with what is available on the property that they do a pretty good job). There is only one drinking fountain by holes 10&15.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of my favorite courses to go and play regardless of the season. Not only does South Lake have great courses but the locals are some of the best. This course's biggest tourney of the year would be the battle of Bijou which is a B-tier in the Tahoe Series (this is a great event). It also used to host the national tour event King of the Lake. I know many people that hold this course high on their top courses but I have also met people who don't think much of the course. My explanation for this would be that compared to some of the other epic courses in the Tahoe basin this might not be as incredible. I think you are kidding yourself in saying you would be upset if this was your local course. With Zephyr Cove being about 20 minutes away you can easily play both in one day. Come play the Tahoe basin especially Bijou!

27 Holes And What Do You Get-An Enjoyable Round! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Bijou Community Park Disc Golf Course features a store selling discs and other disc golf needs, rubber teepads, nice tee signs, two practice baskets, drinking fountain partway through and spinning washers on the post showing the basket positions. This is a really handy feature as some holes have up to three more added hole positions, for a total of five (5). It plays through towering mature pine trees and picnic type areas. The course is set up in sections making it easy to play it in 9 or 18 hole segments if you're not up to the entire 27 or to stop back at your car for refills.
The course is well maintained with no signs of vandalsim. No holes stood out as especially memorable but almost all were enjoyable. I didn't think of any as being filler holes.

Playing in August, it was dry so there was no water hazards on the course. Too bad as I'd like to see what the ponds are like with water. Although relatively flat, with most of the baskets in the "Longs" the course presented a fair challenge.
The course was fairly easy to navigate. The signs were big and informative.

Cons:

This is a large mult-use park so you will encounter other park users time to time.

I don't think the challenge would be there for advanced to Pro type players. I see Bijou more as challenging rec course. No epics downhill throws or really memorable holes here, just 27 holes of solid disc golfing.

It's pretty but doesn't offer the epic views of some of the other area courses. That's hardly a CON, is it?

Other Thoughts:

I played this course at the end of a long, hot, hard day of discing. After playing North Tahoe Lake Lions Club, North Tahoe Regional and Zephyr's Cove earlier today, I really wasn't looking forward to another 27 holes of disc golf. But the fact that I really enjoyed my round here definitely says something about this course. It's really well designed and maintained. I believe it's a course that a wide range of golfers would appreciate and enjoy playing. Which is probably why there were 50 players playing here at 6 PM and I had Zephyr's Cove completely to myself just two hours before. This is just another of the"Don't Miss" courses here in the Tahoe area.

Pros:

Clean, Two practice baskets that have footings, Rubber tee pads with brooms, Multiple pin placements, Course design, Signage, Easy Navigation, Little underbrush, Restrooms, Other Recreation nearby, Pavilion w/ BBQ, Snack bar, Parking close to hole 1, 27 Hole course, Friendly locals, Kiosk and best of all it's FREE!

Cons:

Limited parking space, Summer months can be dry/dusty, Winter months can be covered in snow, Crowded at times, little elevation changes, Non- DGr's around, No alcohol, No dogs allowed on course?,

Other Thoughts:

South Lake Tahoe is a popular family vacation hot spot that offers a plethora of outdoor recreation activities in town and the nearby resorts and including this public park. The park has a skate/bike and two dog parks which draws non DGr's to the area that may be leisurely walking near the meadows. Though most are aware of the flying discs be careful. Parking can be limited during summer months and there is no parking on Al Tahoe Blvd. There is a community college across the entrance to Bijou with plenty of parking and you don't want to park on the West side cause that is the police station!
The local Disc Golf Community is active with all aspects of their local courses and it shows from keeping the baskets constantly moving to holding PDGA tournaments and simply taking pride in what they have here. IMO the course flow and design offers a great chance for someone to experience the sport and as the course progresses it will challenge the rest with distance and increasing difficult pin placements. The course is very easy to navigate and little chances of losing plastic which is a plus any day! When I am in the area you can pencil me in for another round here year after year!
If you were to look up the definition "Destination Course" it would say Bijou Community Park DGC!

-Rubber tees with brooms
-Tee signs with big numbers
-Great local vibe
-Shop on site

-DISCatchers

Cons:

-Basically flat
-Not exclusive, but the people walking through were among the friendliest and most aware that I have ever seen
-Bathrooms are far (does not factor into rating)
-Somewhat lack of risk/reward shots

Other Thoughts:

Bijou Community Park (pronounced Bee-Jew) in South Lake Tahoe is the only real 'park-like' course in the Tahoe basin, providing an opportunity to play a straightforward 27 hold round of golf in a reasonable period of time. While I say park-like, it is definitely in the forest with dirt terrain, towering pines, and lots of dust.

We must have visited right before or after an Ace Race because basically every pin was in its easiest position. No complaints from me though, this was well appreciated after playing all of the other courses in the area, all of which seemed to be set up in their 'F-U' positions. Easy as it was, the challenges were straightforward and simple. Dogleg left, dogleg right, straight ahead, straight ahead with obstacle in between, short, and sorta long. No blinds, either, which is also nice for a first timer. A birdie run for any advanced player and a fun attempt at par for the rest of us (my SSA940 friend shot -10 to -15 over 3 rounds).

Crowds were present, lots of families, groups of young adults, disc golfers, people with pets, and so on. Locals would stop to watch us drive before proceeding on trails through the hole. Slow golfers let us play through. We let fast golfers through and they visibly hurried to get out of our way. Very nice vibe.

My rating is not affected by amenities or the lack of them, but for the record the course does have a shop with snacks, and a water fountain which is accessible from tee 1, 9, and 16. Two practice baskets in the parking median...very nice. The restroom was off the beaten path and there aren't all that many places to duck behind a tree...very public park. Picnic pavilions, 2 dog parks, a skate park, volleyball, and NO SOCCER are some other things you will find here.

With 27 holes between 150 and 750 feet, this course really does have a well rounded variety of 'easy' holes. Most of the other courses in the area have serious ground cover and elevation, so Bijou is a great reprieve from all that and a nice place to watch your disc fly and even get a little skip!

For people on a disc vacation to the area, I would recommend hitting this park up first. As we all know disc stability changes with elevation, and with its lack of elevation and ground cover, Bijou is a good opportunity to watch how your disc flies before sending it 1200 feet over a cliff at Squaw. It's nearly impossible to lose a disc here (at least in the summer, all 'ponds' were dry). Great views, close to everything, and ease of play makes this a great course for repeat rounds and some easy going golf. Makes me wish I was a local.

- Easy navigation
- Trees used well to provide a variety of shots, often with more than one route that you can take
- Beautiful views of the mountains on the back holes

- Variety of holes. From wide open to tightly wooded. Lefts, Rights, and straight ahead shots. From short to long.
- Multiple basket placements on every hole
- Challenging, but not unfair
- Bathrooms neer hole 1
- 2 practice baskets
- Playground, dog park, and skatepark for family or friends that are with you that might not want to golf.

Cons:

- A hole neer the back had a new placement on it, that wasn't on the map, making it difficult to find on our first time through
- Dusty in the summer. This is a slick dust that seems to make the disc want to slip out of your hand, so hold on tight, and bring an extra towel.
- No Beers
- No Dogs
- Police station is right next to the course
- Some blind baskets
* It would be nice if it had some more elevation change, but Zepher Cove is right down the road for that

Other Thoughts:

Bijou is a wonderful peice of the pie that makes up Tahoe disc golf. Only minutes away from one of my favorite courses (Zepher Cove), Bijou is 27 holes of well laid out disc golf. When I first looked at pictures and reviews of this course I didn't think that a course that's mostly flat could be a top notch course. The hole design is wonderful, with left's, right's and straight ahead shots, usualy with multiple routes to get to each hole. During your round you will be treated to beautiful views of the mountains that are around Lake Tahoe. There is a meddow neer the middle of the course thats worth stoping and taking a deep breath and just enjoying the view for a minute. Over all I would say that this course is well worth a visit if your passing through the Tahoe area.

Pros:

Beautiful park with 27 holes.Great use of land.Very few weak holes.

Incredible tees. These might be the best tees I've played.I don't know what the material is but I never lost my footing (something that happens occasionally even on concrete).

You will need every shot to do well.Back hand, sidearm, hyzer, anhyzer and the occasional overhand.Though I found myself throwing a lot of high hyzers as that is my best shot there were plenty of options on just about every hole.

Cons:

There were more than a few times I had trouble finding the next tee.I think this has a lot to do with being in a forest. However I feel more could've been done to address this.

An abundance of blind baskets.I spent a lot of time trying to find the basket from the tee.I would've liked to see more done to let the player know the current basket location. With that being said the times I couldn't find the basket I threw down the middle and was in good shape.

Other Thoughts:

Great course you should play if you get the chance. The scenery was amazing.

A Tahoe adventure 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- What can I say about 27 holes? I'm not used to playing a course with a legit 27, so that is a major feather in Bijou's cap.

- On a related note, you would almost expect that with 27 holes, they would start running together at some point, but I didn't find that to be the case. There was a good amount of variety with the difficulty and obstacles from hole to hole. I really felt a distinct identity with each 9-hole section of the course.

- There are multiple basket placements on each hole. The first 9 had an A and B layout, and the next 18 each had an A, B, and C layout. Sheer math would suggest that the possibilities are endless with the different overall layouts the course could have. With 27 holes and multiple basket locations, I can't imagine that Bijou gets too stale for the regulars who play it often.

- It is a challenging, yet fair, course. The trees and shrubs provide plenty of obstacles, but on most holes you have a shot at getting to the basket if you play smart.

- The signage was excellent, for the most part. With so many basket locations, signage is critical. I actually had the same problems with the basket markers that someone else mentioned before - a lot of them were missing - but I love the overall concept and system they have in place.

- This was my first experience throwing off rubber pads, and although it took some getting used to, I enjoyed it.

- The scenery was gorgeous, especially throwing on hole 12 looking out at the mountainside behind. The park overall is stunning with the pines and mountains in the distance.

Cons:

- It can't really be helped, but the dirt really makes gripping your discs an adventure. That's just something you have to accept with this course.

- I definitely agree with the person who said that the holes are hard to find on the back part of the course. One basket - I believe it was on #22 - was not even in one of the three locations listed on the tee marker. I was told from a local that it was placed in an alternate location because of a tournament coming up. Luckily, I had someone there to tell me where it was. I can only imagine how hard it would be for someone like me to find it playing the course the first time alone.

Other Thoughts:

Being from the East Coast, this was a new experience for me. The shrubs killed any rolls I hoped to get, and the trees were brutal - especially on hole 26. But, I still had the time of my life. This is definitely a course worth playing if you're in the Tahoe area.

The Further You Go 2+ years drive by

Pros:

This is a good 27 hole course that plays through a great park and mountain medow area. Tees were consistent and the signs were adequate to get the job done. There are a good variety in distance and challenge level as well. Most of this course was donated by locals and as such there is a good local crowd that really keeps this course as good as it is. All the baskets were in good condition and consistent throughout. Lots of trees everywhere to make you throw accurately. There are other things to do at the park for those family memebers who do not DG. The skate park seemed to be getting good use while I was there. The course itself was near everything but didn't seem to interefere with anything. There was little outside foot traffic that could even get in the way outside of a few walking paths. There was not too much throwing traffic when I was there but enough to know that the course does get used. Several holes had old brooms by them to help you get the dust off of the nice tee pads.

Cons:

Because of the location, this is a very dirty park in that you will get dirt on everything, not really a con but it would be a good idea to wash your discs afterwards. There are a fw places when the flow of holes does not make too much sense. There are some hole locations that have been added since the signs were put in and there is little to no information on those. This course is really long for begginers.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course as part of a long road trip and remember this course because it started out fairly easy for me as I think I birdied the first two holes and by the end of the 27 holes I remember thinking how things seemed to in general get tougher and tougher. It was a really fun around though and I really did enjoy the setting a whole bunch. Once you enter the park driving, you want to make sure that you drive all the way back left to get to the first tee. There is also a donation box by the first tee.

Fun in the Sun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots and lots of options
rollers can do well on this course
good combo of wide open and tight holes

Cons:

it's long and for those who have trouble with long courses this might have you sore from throwing 27

Other Thoughts:

I found myself consistently behind my pal who would flick a shout 100-150ft and watch it roll another 100+ ft

this was especially a good shot on the slightly downhill holes
