Fun course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 7, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The tee pads are awesome for the first 18 and pads for 19-24 and A,B,C are rumored to be coming in the future. The park is only used for disc golf so you never have to wait for a jogger or someone walking their dog. The course is rarely ever crowded and the views of the foothills are sweet. It has a good mix of long and short holes that allow you to use alot of discs. Holes 1 and 18 use the ridges to make for some fun downhill/sidehill shots. There are few water hazards and the native grass can be very long in some places, but as long as you have a good idea of where your disc landed, it usually isn't too hard to find.

Cons:

The tees are marked only with rocks(the signs are in the works: there is one on 15) , so finding the next tee your first time playing can be a little difficult. The course is on open space land so there isn't plush green grass like some of the other courses that are located in city parks, so wear pants if you don't like itchy legs. There is no water available and very little shade, so on a hot day the course can be brutal if you don't have your own.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoy this course. With it being only a short drive from my house I usually play it a couple times a week. It is a fun course with a good mix of short and long holes. There are no water hazards until the two A and B holes and 23. Hole B is a fun shot between some bushes and over the creek. OB areas marked by rocks and flags. I suggest printing out the map under the links tab if it is your first time at bird's nest

If Only There Were More Flying Bird's 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 16, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is a well loved course, especially by the creator and care taker of this course, John Bird who is the current president of the Mile High Disc Golf Club. The course sits on an old farm which is also now the buffer zone between the local reservoir and the community. The course was well designed to take advantage of the terrain as much as possible. Holes 1, 4 and 18 do an exceptional job of this. The course also takes full advantage of the few trees that are currently there with a favorite being hole 15. Even with this course as open as it is, it still provides a significant challenge for most with length and that other features already mentioned. The first 18 holes have good tee pads for the most part (hole 2 is rather tiny). The baskets are consistent for the most part until some of the later holes. John Bird is still in the process of developing this course and as such there are now 25 holes that are regularly there with even more unique holes for tournament play including a tunnel hole under the road that passes by. There is also an extensive practice are which has one or more practice baskets and an area designated as a driving range. There are benches at many of the tee pads and a few trash cans as well. There is a good variety in distances.

Cons:

The layout can be confusing if you do not look at the map or if they have not mowed the grass in a while. There is a lot of tall grass and bushes that may make it difficult for you to find a disc and it is always recommended that you play this course with someone else to have a better chance of finding all your discs. Because of where this course is located at the base of the foothills, it can get very windy here at times. For most the wind provides a little extra challenge and I have never seen the wind be so bad that you would consider not playing. There are no real tee signs at the tees and thus there is no real clue given as to distances unless you copy the info from this site down and take it with you. The tees on holes 19+ are dirt right now though I am guessing it is in the works to change that.

Other Thoughts:

While this course may not be the most spectacular course in the world today, do not count it out for being something incredible in the future. There is a lot of love for this course by the local crowd and they are attempting to buy and play trees that will grow and make the course that much more interesting. With the design being so good this course could become amazing. Though it is 24 holes they can combine several holes to make an 18 hole tournament course that is really good right now and will only get better. This course is definitely worth a play if you are in the area and is a short drive from Johnny Roberts if you want to get two good courses in back to back. Now I know that the name of the course must have something to do with John Bird but I really would have loved to see more birds while playing, just saying.

Growing up nicely 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I love this course. It has allowed to to improve my game leaps and bounds. What makes me love this course? The holes are well thought out to use both distance and accuracy. Some holes require a big drive while some holes demand a drive be placed very accurately. The long tee pads give players a good run up to help maximize the drive. Hole #1 is a fun downhill shot that gets either love or hate from the wind. Hole #2 takes some of the trees at this dusty course in to play for a shot hole. Holes #9 & #10 are two of my favorite holes on this course. These holes demand a shorter, yet accurate drive. When hole #15 is in its eastern position it is guarded by many trees. I enjoy hole #18 as a quick drop off hill. I have played holes 19-24 only a handful of times. It appears that though is being put in to making these holes better. The course gets better every time I play it. A disc golf only park. Never crowded. Great for tournament or casual play.

Cons:

This course lacks appropriate signage. Small numbers on the rocks near the tee pads are not visible. Rocks can mess up lower end plastic. Hole #7 can require a spotter for your disc. 18-24 does not have concrete tees. This course can get toasty in the afternoon sun. There are not too many places to retreat to shade so bring water.

Other Thoughts:

John Bird truly loves this course. He is at the course often and is quick to show you new hole ideas and to discuss the future of the park. The changes made in the past year have improved the course nicely. Rumors of signage, concrete for 18-24, Pro shop and other amenities are floating around. Expect to see this course grow more and more.

Working toward excellence 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Great tee pads, the best I have ever played on.
-Professionally designed & maintained
-Tall rough and moved fairways
-Disc golf only park
-24 Holes
-I like the OB lakes or hills or whatever they are. It adds a bit of challenge where this course really needs it due to it's open nature. I'd rather see the boundaries painted green or something or use fence posts to make them standout a little better, but with the fairways mowed and those areas not it gives a decent visual from the tee box.

Cons:

-Tee signs are lacking
-Needs some navigation signs
-Gets somewhat redundant at the end, might have been better to only install 18 holes and have some permanent par 4s and 5s. That would make this course distinctive.

Other Thoughts:

This course is cool because it's designed in such a way to make a championship course, but can also handle daily play. I really liked how they maximized the terrain and vegetation, they've done a whole lot with not much to work with. It's fun to play, but it gets kind of redundant since there isn't many trees so there seems to be a lot of wide open hyzers and it's really just a question if you can judge the wind properly. The only real defense on this course is the wind, but luckily there is usually a lot of wind in that area. It's the best modern style course in the area and worth playing. I shot -6.

C'est magnifique! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a solid course with a lot of character. I was pleasantly surprised after pulling into the lot and seeing a barren landscape. There are very few trees, but many of the baskets are strategically placed and put the trees to good use. The tee pads are sizeable. The course is mowed and the thick grass won't eat any discs. #1 is a great open to the course. There is no water (someone in Denver knows how to make a course where you don't have to worry about losing any discs)! Good variation in short and long holes. Nice views of the surrounding hills. The course is laid out well with paths to the next tee pad. It is so remote I doubt it's ever crowded. It feels like you are in the middle of nowhere, despite the ginormous suburban homes nearby. Volunteers made this course and they have done well. Props to John Bird.

Cons:

Let's be perfectly honest, the O.B. is a joke. It is marked using large rocks, but I completely ignored them. Too unnatural. A few of the tee pads have no markings. The tee pads have foul lines on them with cement extending past the lines. I ignored the foul lines, too. The land is dusty and rocky, can be unsteady. I'm waiting for the 27 hole version. As it is run by volunteers and donations, the last third is still a work in progress.

Other Thoughts:

I read a post on the message board that said the course can be configured into a "World-Class" 18 hole course. Barring the growth of massive trees, this claim is far from reality. The course is lengthy and uses the small hills well. I can't wait to play it again to see how it changes. With so many birdie opportunities, it is a fun course to compete against your friends or your enemies for that matter. If you're in Denver, be sure to take the long drive here.

very good course, just short of excellent 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 27, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Biggest tee pads you'll find anywhere, quality baskets, good variety of holes that each present a unique challenge, good mix of long and short holes, tons of parking, generally not very crowded, disc golf only park so there's no wandering idiots to deal with, benches at almost every tee are a really nice touch especially on hot days.

Cons:

OB is often very difficult to see from tee pad, and is often not marked on course map (14 and 17 have big OB areas next to fairway that are not on map). You often just see yet another field of weeds then approach your disc only to find a nice little row of rocks hiding behind the first 6 inches of weeds to indicate that you've just landed OOB. There's some bastardous kind of tiny burr that is always ends up covering my socks when I need to fish through the weeds for a disc. Lack of signage makes it difficult to find a few of the pins.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a very good course, that will only get better as time goes on and some of the smaller trees mature. I really feel that it would have been better to mark some of the OB with fence posts connected by rope than the current undetectable from the tee rock borders that are in place. Holes 1-18 are very solid, but 19-24 definitely seem like an afterthought that doesn't match the rest of the course's character. A definite 'must play' if you are in the area.

The practice basket that was stolen has just been replaced!

Great and Getting Better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Disc Golf ONLY - no hikers, bikers, etc.. Johnny Roberts in old town Arvada, another great course, has a growing problem with park traffic. Most people there respect disc golfers, but not all. Be warned, and careful. I was really glad to see a disc golf only course so close by. I hope this will be a growing trend.
- Never crowded, no matter how full the parking lot looks.
- Challenging distances
- Challenging shots into trees, even more so in summer time.

I am lucky enough to literally have this course in my back yard, so I get to play it frequently. Even so, it still continues to challenge me and make me a better player. John (Bird) changes the hole locations frequently enough to keep it fresh. Be advised there are some long holes that might prove intimidating to a first-timer. Hole 1, while not the longest, usually provides a clue to the challenging nature of the course. Hole 3 doesn't look that far, but it is up hill, which in my opinion adds an additional 100+ feet to the "actual" distance. Hole 6, depending on basket placement, can be really challenging with a dogleg right over tall grass, and quite a bit of distance. Hole 14 will flat out test your arm.

Cons:

- Wind. Try to get your round in early in the morning, or in the evening just before sunset in the summer. This course gets everything weather wise that comes off of the mountains, and the wind can change directions several times within a round.

- Tall grass outside fairways. This Depends on how much rain there is in the spring and summer. 2008 was super dry and the grass was not an issue. 2009 was definitely a banner year for rain, and the tall grass meant the occasional search for a lost disc.

Other Thoughts:

John Bird continues to improve the course, adding more trees in 2009, with plans to install concrete tees on holes 19-24(?). If you are in the area, this is a MUST play course.

Bird's Nest Disc Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I loved this one. The mountains are visible the entire time you play, so needless to say, the place is gorgious. The tee pads are all concrete (minus the last 6), and after speaking with John Bird, tee signs are probably going to be installed soon. Not only do you get to play 18 awesome holes, there are 6 more...24 awesome holes. Really nice changes in elevation help you work all aspects of your game, as well as a good mixture of open to wooded shots. We had no problems navigating the course even without tee signs. Info board at the beginning of the course and a port-a-potty in the huge parking lot. Probably what I liked most was meeting the man who is responsible for the whole place...Mr. Bird was there and was ready to shake my hand as I was getting out of the car. If you see him there, go talk with him, he's a great guy. We probably spoke with him for half an hour before starting our round.

Cons:

It had rained a lot before I got there, so it got a little swampy in parts of the lower course, but not too bad. I am not holding the lack of signage against it, since Mr. Bird plans on installing them soon. It was hard to tell where the "rock-out" areas, or "dry lakes," were.

Other Thoughts:

This was my favorite of the courses I played in the Denver area. If you are in the area, you must find time to play this one, but allow enough time. It is a long walk, but very enjoyable.

Local Club Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A disc golf only course is always a pleasure to play. Amenities include a nice practice area with a practice pin and a driving area. The welcome sign/area is kept up to date with course and tournament info etc... The pads and pins are high quality. A lot of thought has been put into the layout and as the trees get bigger, the course will get better.

Cons:

Many of the stone signs/markers have been broken. They are very unique and creative, but unfortunately they did not work out too well. I was going to mention a few more "cons" relating to the course such as the out of bounds markers, exposed terrain and wind, but I decided to take context into consideration. This is a disc golf park. Avid disc golfers play on it and they play the course more than once. The out of bounds markers are tough to see, but once you've played a few rounds you learn where they are located. The wind adds to the challenge. The tall weeds demand accuracy. It takes a bit more skill and perseverance to play this course than your average course and only avid disc golf players will likely enjoy playing this course often.

Other Thoughts:

Hole #1 temps you down into the valley with a downhill subtle right to left shot. From there the course calls for a big arm and sunscreen as you meander through the valley. Playing this course for the first time is a bit like being a new kid in school. You need to know the rules and be respectful. Get to know one of the locals and they will show you the ropes. This is not where you go to jack around. The players here take the sport seriously. The bottom line for this is course is that, in addition to Sunday morning at Johnny Roberts, this course is where you go to get to know the Denver disc golf community.

Pray for no WIND!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wide open, undulating hills. Grip-it-and-rip-it course. The big arms in CO enjoy playing this course. Great cement tee pads.

Cons:

rock-lined OB's are tough to see. Due to lack of structure, rock OB's where added to make more challenging but are more unlucky than anything if you land in them. If it's windy, stay away. This course is located in a very windy area were gusts can reach 80-100mph and commonly are above 50mph. Lack of structure lends to windy conditions.

Other Thoughts:

John Bird, a CO disc golf and frisbee legend, is the course designer. He puts his heart and sole into this course and has made many upgrades over the years to improve. As this course matures and planted trees grow, it will eventually evolve into a great course.

Tee pads are nice and even have a little extra after foul line for follow troughs. Very open course for the most part, some baskets are guarded by trees. Pin placements are good and they move them around. There are street signs on your way to the course, easy to locate.

Cons:

The really bad thing about this course is that the tee sighs are slabs of granite with a number on it placed next to the tee pad. Then there are a couple of holes where you need to back track to get to the next tee pad. (#3 and #5, #14 and #17 I think)

Great tee pads, elevation changes, good chance to throw hard, and very tricky in the wind. Some imaginative pin placements and the OB regions add some technicality to the mostly wide open space. Good for beginners learning how to drive.

Cons:

OB not always visible off the tee, sometimes you have to huck and hope. Not very inspiring and if the wind is not blowing, not particularly challenging for the better players. I hear it can be a swamp if it rains.

Keep up the good work John Bird 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

A disc golf only park means no interference from other activities. Huge concrete tee pads. Mach3 double chain baskets in good condition. Lots of parking available. There's a practice basket near the first tee and course information board. Lots of elevation in play here; the shot off the first tee is great, the uphill on #3 was challenging... It was nice to see some benches as well as trash cans and recycle bins.

On many of the holes here distance is the name of the game. If you can throw long off the tee you'll probably score well. But there are some shorter holes mixed in with good use of trees to add some challenge.

Cons:

The small rock fenced OB areas may be a good idea in theory, but I found them very hard to see from the tee box meaning it was more luck than skill if I landed in one. This would be less of a con for regular players with the course memorized. There's no indication at the tee which position the basket is in.

The stone tee signs are weak, have been broken or shattered and have no distances on them.

The mando on #2 looks obvious on the map, but standing on the tee in person I found it confusing which trees were the mando boundaries, as they didn't appear to be marked.

Other Thoughts:

A map will greatly assist first timers with navigating this course, but the grooved in walking paths help a lot too. I guess I was lucky that the wind was pretty calm when I played. I didn't have much trouble with this course and shot a 73 for 24 holes.

It's pretty obvious that this started as an 18-hole course as holes #19-#24 only have dirt tees and feel like they were just added in later. I think there's a plan to improve the new holes over time, but for now they pale when compared to the first 18.

Cons:

some vandalisism and littering has lessened the experience. Most holes are fairly easy and open, prickly pear cactus,

Other Thoughts:

If you play in the later afternoon, a nice cross wind will usually come in adding to the challenge. Also, there is a driving range and putting range for those looking for some extra practice. Also, a great place to bring dogs as the course is spacious enough to not interfere with anything someone else is doing. As the trees on this course mature, it will become more challenging. I have been really impressed with how well this course is maintaned and presented.

PDGA Perfect 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 13, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

If you were going to craft a course which represents all the elements of a perfect PDGA course, Bird's Nest comes close. It exposes a player to a great deal of physicalness by demanding huge drives. It is arranged around the largest cement t-pads I have ever played. Very few baskets have any obstacles within thirty meters. This ensures that luck is at a minimum and the most powerful drivers and best putters will dominate. It has ample parking and one of the few disc courses with a driving range. It is completly dedicated to disc golf, has great flow, and a beautiful, scenic mountain backdrop. I've heard complaints about the lack of obstacles and trees, these people haven't played it when the wind comes from the North. I should warn you that when it starts blowing, the course becomes a monster. I deliberately expose myself to it to improve my tournament game.

Cons:

This course demands professional PDGA signage, after all it takes PDGA specifications and standardization to the nth degree. Adding a few "tricked out holes", like the one that goes through a concrete tunnel, or utilzing the farm house/grain silo property, or elevated tees and drops on the 'South side would add some spice to the layout. The dry OB circles need to be better defined throughout the course and not just on the masterfully done first hole.

Other Thoughts:

With John Bird's vision and work, I believe the course has the potential of being a five star rated course someday.

Guess I missed the wind, good for me. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

The first thing to notice about Bird's Nest is that it is in its own unique area. There is signs for a dog park and a disc golf course, each with their own area and parking area just below an urban reservoir . The course is not shared with anything else, I love that, golfers here are in their own world with only other golfers to share it with. There are maps but you probably wont need one, from-basket-to-tee is in most parts a pretty worn path. The tee pads are humongous, you can chuck, and have a barbeque on em at the same time. There are some good elevated shots that are memorable. The view is fantastic with the Rockies looking over your shoulder perhaps adding some wind. Having an extra six holes from the norm is great. Bird's Nest is very clean for a big empty lot. The powers that be have also done a fantastic job gathering up all the rocks and making either cool tee areas or obstacles out of them.

Cons:

As Valkyrie Kid mentioned before, the polished granite tee signs don't feel right, It did irk me to see some of them smashed, on the other hand it felt like the logical result for the markers by the hands of some jackass kids. There are a few trees here, most of them small and on one side of the course. What they lack in tress they have made up for in hills and OB and distance but scores should still be lower here. There were a few times I threw into the other fairway and still came out with par. Some of the course feels crammed together, as I was always near the other fairways.

Other Thoughts:

I Like this course, I look forward to getting back here next time I am in the west Denver Boulder area.
