Bluemont Blues 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 5, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 holes with 72 different ways to play! 3 concrete tees and two baskets on each hole with 4 pin positions, gray baskets move while the Blue Mach V's are always in the long position. There is a lot of course variety packed into the tiny park. The course features some nice sloping elevation to play up down and across, and a small creek. Mostly wooded fairways providing good challenge. Great course for beginners to advanced. Nice steps and erosion control built in. Warm up net to driving into, and practice basket.

Cons:

Beware cramped and crowded park and course layout, overlapping fairways on a couple holes and some play close to each other and park trails and users.

Other Thoughts:

Bluemont is a hard course to rate, it's got some old school feel and has been modified over the years to make it longer and more challenging. There is a lot of local love for the course and lots of work done. This is the closest course to downtown DC in the sprawling Arlington suburb, so land is fairly limited and expensive. Your experience of the course can vary greatly whether or not the course is crowded or not. It's a great course for what it is, it's not a destination course, but it's a decent fun course close to DC.

Pros:

Close to D.C., good neighborhood, plenty of amenities in terms of bath facilities, picnic tables, a playground. Like others have said, this is a small course on a small piece of land. It plays quick, but it's still a fun course. I played it twice from each tee location when available, as I'm used to 18. There are multiple tees (concrete) and multiple cages on MOST holes. The signs on every hole do a decent job of laying out the hole with pin and tee locations. There are trash cans everywhere, and the park is quite nice. The course lays out around a nice stream, and there is decent elevation going on. Pretty much everything is tight and wooded...losing discs shouldn't be a concern at all.

Cons:

Well, first and obviously, it's only a niner. It's a little confusing at first, as the holes lay out across each other, so we spent a good bit of time the first round pre-walking the holes trying to figure out where we were headed. The park is crowded, and the parking isn't the best. If you enjoy frosty beverages, better brown bag it....kids/families are everywhere.

Other Thoughts:

This course was shorter than I expected and not much of a work out, but it is a fun little course that I would play again from time to time, and would be great for playing with children or beginners, or perhaps to sneak a quick round in after work.

Decent DG Inside the Beltway 2+ years

Other Thoughts:

Bluemont is a nice little locals course set on a hillside in the woods in the heart of Northern Virginia. On the downside the course is only nine holes and is all in the woods. But on the upside there are three concrete teepads per hole, good signs, benches, and poles to hang your bag on, the course takes maximum advantage of the limited space with some uphill, downhill, right and left, and is not painfully short like the older NoVa courses. And it's a good woods course; there's trees on every hole, but the trees are a reasonable challenge, not an annoying one.

The Bluemont course is all about making the best use of the land provided. Three tees per hole and frequently chainging pin placements make up for the fact that the course is sitting on less land than most. And the holes themselves are all interesting, playing along the side of the hill, up and down, long enough to be a challenge (for recreational players, at least), with enough trees to require some decent touch on your drives. Again, the individual holes do a great job making the most of the land available. I visited on a cold winter day, however, and I'm told that on a nice day this place gets crowded, and the holes are all close together, so be prepared.

With land so expensive, and the population so thick, NoVa residents are lucky to have Bluemont. The course offers a varied challenge in a good setting, is well maintained, and sits in a prime location as the only Virginia course inside the Beltway. It's a nice oasis in an otherwise crazy part of the state and well worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood.

Favorite Hole - #6, right fading slight downhill shot with drop to the creek on the left.
