Fun 9-hole track, but watch out for pedestrians 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 10, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Bluemont is a fun 9-hole track and one of only a couple of disc golf options inside in the Beltway. Being the only option, the course designers and caretakers packed as much course as they could into a small, very busy, urban park.

+ Multiple layouts for each hole: a short and a long basket, and up to three tee pads. There's certainly something here for the beginner, intermediate, and even advanced player.

+ Nice mix of hole layouts and technical skills required: an uphill hole or two; hyzer, anhyzer, and straight layouts

+ Nice tees and baskets, and easy to follow the color-coding system on the tees, the hole layout signs at the short tees, and the blue vs. gray baskets for the long and short positions, respectively.

Cons:

Bluemont is a fun little track, but there are some serious safety issues that lead me to mark it down. First of all, I'm usually a tougher grader on half tracks. This is no exception. So, my ceiling for this course is a little lower than some reviewers. And starting from there, adding major safety issues, leads me to a 2.0 rating:

- This park is very busy. There are walkers, bike riders, and kids playing everywhere. The course winds its way through paved trails and mixed use areas. Also, some of the holes are parallel or close together. Add this all together, and it's a park where you need to be very aware and cautious so as not to cause injury.

- If you were to transplant Bluemont to another (less dense) city with other disc golf course options, it wouldn't be a high-traffic track (I'm talking about the disc golf, not the rest of the park). Unfortunately, in a dense city like DC, disc golf courses are usually hard to find. That might explain some of the rating inflation (in my opinion) for this track. Don't get me wrong: it's a fun track. But it's only 9 holes and has these glaring concerns, yet still manages a 3.0+ rating.

Other Thoughts:

I've now played, what I believe to be, the only two public courses inside the Beltway: Bluemont on the VA side and Calvert Road on the MD side. I have Calvert Road at 2.5. It's also 18 holes. If you have the option, I would pick playing a round there vs. Bluemont. However, if you are in Arlington and looking for a fun place to play, Bluemont is it! Just look before you throw!

Technical but frustrating 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course encourages strong technical play with good control and intelligent approaches. It's a great place to develop the finer aspects of your game and spend a day working out the kinks in your short game.

Cons:

I don't like the layout of the course with the interweaving fairways and multiple tees shooting towards the same baskets. The park is fairly crowded because of the population density in the area so you always have to be on the lookout for pedestrians and kids.

Other Thoughts:

There are better courses in the area that make for better destination play, but if it's locally convenient, it's worth a throw.

Fun but Cramped 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 24, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a fun 9 holes on a busy multi-use park. With two pins and multiple tees, the course offers a bit more variety than a typical 9-hole course would.

The course seems to appeal to a wide variety of skill levels. We saw a lot of beginners on the course having a blast. The park-like setting, without treacherous rough, makes it friendly for those newer to the game. But there is also enough distance to keep more experienced players interested.

Cons:

The course has a very small footprint and is set in a fairly busy park in a dense population center, so safety is a major concern. There is very little separation between holes, with mandos being used to try to keep discs from flying into groups on another hole. In fact, there is one tree that is a mando for two different holes! There is also a walking/jogging trail that can come into play on a number of holes.

Other Thoughts:

Based just on the quality of golf, I would call this a very average course. It has everything you would expect from a decent course. The park setting isn't overly challenging, but it's also not an easy pitch-and-putt. Each shot is fun, but not exceptional. Because of the cramped quarters, and subsequent crowding from other players as well as other park users, I have to downgrade the course to just below average. The course is fun to play, but it's not fun to stand on the tee waiting for the area to be clear.

Never again 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course had mutiple pins and tees at each hole. The course was almost all under tree cover providing nice break from the sun.

Cons:

The course had no flow at all. The extra tee pads were all over the place many times on another holes fairway.

Other Thoughts:

I think people are trying to do to much at this course, the extra pins and pads seem like a good idea but it is a small park with nine holes. I went to DC and wanted to play a course in Virginia and Maryland, after reading reviews for Bluemont and Calvert I was really excited, well Calvert delievered and Bluemont did not. I wish I would have played Calvert twice and not wasted my time at this park. I cant believe it has so many reviews and is this highly rated. There were maybe three good holes, that doesnt equal a 3.5 to me. If your in the DC area go to Calvert it is a much better course.
