Developing Open, Soon to be Wooded Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 4, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Boone Woods is a lovely, well-maintained course just minutes from Idlewild, but it's strong in its own right. It's important to note that this course is rapidly changing. Originally, the course was almost all wide open 300' shots, but during the 2020 season a major effort was made to plan for the course future. 2 baskets were put on mounds and elevated, several holes were redesigned, and alternate pins were designed. But most importantly, several dozen saplings were planted that will make this course far more interesting and challenging.
With that said, here are some additional pros:
-Lovely, well-maintained park with shelters, restrooms, and plenty of parking
- Most of the course is on disc golf only space so pedestrians are rarely an issue
-Many holes that allow you to work on distance
-Nice teepads and baskets, as well as elevated baskets on 2 holes
- Hole 3 is a bit of a signature hole, playing over a wooded ravine. 6 is also a challenging wooded hole with a few tight lines.
-Arrows on baskets to next teepad when navigation is tricky.
- When the trees come in this place will be really tough, but really nice. I'd likely raise my review to a 4 star.

Cons:

-Until this course develops a lot of the holes feel repetitive, throwing back in forth in a wide open field.
-This course definitely gets crowded in the summer.
-If you don't have consistent 300' power par is likely unreachable.
-There's a pavilion by hole 5 that is known to have discs get stuck on top (if it happens there's a phone number to call. The park district is great about retrieving them).
-The elevated baskets are on raised ground, so they are really high. Maybe a bit much of a gimmick for some.
-Long walks from 11 to 12 and again from 16 to 17 (go behind the tennis court for 17)
-Navigation can be tricky at a few spots. Once you finish 3 you'll see a teepad to the left, that is for hole 6. Go behind the playground for 4s teepad.

Other Thoughts:

It all comes down to when you read this review. It's currently early 2021. The more the trees develop, the more exciting this course will get. With such a supportive parks district I can't wait to see the results!

Boon Woods 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great for beginner/ intermediate players. Front Nine is pretty open but with a couple tough holes. Now that they moved hole #13 by the basketball courts it's back to 18 holes.

Cons:

Not many long holes. No Practice basket.

Other Thoughts:

Love this course for a daily round challenging but not overly diffacult.

Idlewilds Handicapped Brother 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Challenging holes, plenty of chance to take a high score on most holes. Water comes into play on several holes and there are a couple of long holes throwing downhill. Good mix between woods and field, excellent mix of hills and flat ground, didn't really notice any elevation changes while walking.

Cons:

I can't really remember any cons to the course, but it wasn't an awe-inspiring 4.5-5.0 course.

Other Thoughts:

My friend who was guiding me around the course called it "Idlewild's retarded brother." We played this course on our first day at 7:30am and it was perfect. By the time we were done with the round it was time to take the hoodies off.

This course has a ton of trees once you get into the woods and a lot of the holes have a hill in play either up or down, so watch your shots and keep everything solid; one wrong kick from a tree could end up giving you 3 extra strokes on a hole.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 6, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Great Beginner/Intermediate Course.
-Good Mix of Wooded and Open holes.
-The Holes that had hole numbers/signs were helpful and gave you an idea of where the next hole was.
-Concrete Tee Pads.
- Nice (New?) Baskets.
-Area with a Practice Basket.

Cons:

-There are boards for hole numbers but the majority of the front 9 had no hole numbers.
-No Course Map onsite (See the one online).
-First Timers will need a map or will have to look at the baskets to find most hole numbers.
- Hole 14's hill is pretty steep and needs a bridge or steps.
-There were picnic tables that were right in the way of a hole or two. So, people could be in the way of drives.
-For experienced players no holes over 350 plus feet.

Other Thoughts:

-Part of the front 9 was under construction but it did not interfere with our game.
-Great Beginner, Intermediate, & Family Disc Golf Course.
-The course has a good mix of short and long holes.
-Make sure you print off a map if you are unfamiliar with the course.
-A Great Park in-general and had plenty of things to do besides disc golf. Plus, Had some Bocce Ball areas!

Redesign Goodness 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 1, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's a total redesign of a course that had seen better days. All the old baskets were pulled and new DISCatchers installed. All the old concrete teepads were torn out and the new concrete teepads were installed pointing to completely different holes. In fact, the land where the original 18 was...is now only the Front 9 holes. An additional area of the park that is wooded was brought into play for the Back 9 holes.

Before, this course had a few sparse trees but they only came into play on very few holes. Now, almost every basket has a tree nearby. No, no trees were planted...just a better overall design to bring nature into play.

7 holes over 300ft with 2 at around 295ft. Two holes around 350 feet. However, the wooded holes are short so it allows new players not to get frustrated as they develop. With 7 holes 215ft or less it is beginner friendly...however...most of these holes are wooded and create fun shots. This gives several ace run opportunities.

Cons:

Some of the wooded holes were originally supposed to be longer...and in the future a few of them might be lengthened. One of these is #15 which could be pulled to the left and stretched out another 100feet...taking it away from the playground area. A few of the wooded holes have tight basket to next teepad area....for a new course that is....and #11 and #12 may interfere with each other if the course is packed.

The course is still going thru some construction, thus...will get muddy after rain.

Other Thoughts:

This was a heavily played course...and I expect it to be even more played now. The upgraded course design makes it a totally different course sharing no characteristics with the course that was there before. It is a breath of fresh air. It retains the needed element of giving new players a place to develop but with a hint of larger holes to practice on distance with control. #4 being slightly uphill and tightly wooded at around 350feet is a tough hole....

If you don't get your birdies early...don't worry..you should get them late. Most players should get 1-2 birds on the front...and about 5-7 of the back 9.

Pros:

New baskets in ground on a different reconfigured course. The front nine holes are in the area where the original 18 holes were located. The back nine is in an area not previously used for disc golf. The front nine has some nice 350 ft holes that have the baskets surrounded by trees and a few of the holes have tee shots that the basket is out of view due to being over a hill or a blind.shot. The course is set on a ridge where the wind is a big factor and adds to the challenge.

Cons:

The back nine has 3 or 4 holes less than 200 feet but with the land that was available, the parks did the best they could do in putting these nine holes on the limited property.

Other Thoughts:

The new baskets are a big improvement and new teepads have upgraded this course. If you have not been to Boone Woods lately, check it out.
