"Besides the broken glass and assorted trash, Boyd Hill is terrific!" Boyd Hill is an interesting course in the heart of Rock Hill, SC. If you're traveling to Rock Hill in October for USDGC, as I recently did, this is likely the course you'll play in town. When I played, there was a ton of USDGC spectators there playing before heading to see the big boys. I'll get to the broken glass in a minute, but first, here are the pro's...

+ Navigation was self-explanatory. Newcomers shouldn't have a problem. Accurate tee signs.

+ I was pleasantly surprised to find a decent variety in the length of the holes. I thought it would be a pitch and putt style course, but it's not for the full 18. There are a few 300+ holes and even a 400-foot hole.

+ There was also a surprising variety of open and wooded holes. The course starts out with a few fairly open to very open holes before getting into the woods. Nice variety and decent challenge.

+ There is some fun elevation on this course. Downhill holes are my favorite and Boyd Hill has a few of them.

+ Good mix of hyzer, anhyzer, and straight holes.

+ They made good use of a deep creek bed on several holes: playing over it, next to it, and with baskets backed up to it. The underbrush needs to be cleared out of it, but the use of the creek itself is good course design.

Boyd Hill is not in a great area, so it may not be realistically possible to keep the course clean. Cleaning up that trash would do a lot towards improving the course, but sadly, I don't think that's feasible.

- Walking on, walking on broken glass.

- Holes 1 and 2 are parallel fairways and way too close to each other. On a busy day, you can't play hole 1 until hole 2 has cleared.

- Some of the gaps are rather ridiculous, in my opinion. (I'm thinking about hole 6 in particular, but there are a couple others.) Number 6 is a double mando between two trees directly in front of the tee. It's maybe a 3-4-foot gap. That hole plays down hill through a few scattered trees, over a creek, overrun by underbrush, to grassy hillside green. I mean, it's technically possible to make it to the green from the tee, but not much fun. I didn't consider the risk of disc loss in the creek to be worth the risk of truly driving through that mando. I played a putter through the mando, then the shot I wanted to play to the green.

- The underbrush and briars on much of the course are pretty bad.

- Aesthetically, the course isn't anything to write home about.

Overall, Boyd Hill is a pretty average course. The well-designed holes are overshadowed (depending on how much you care about it) by the glass and generally poor aesthetics. If you can get past that, try it out.

Beginning of the course seemed pretty promising. The entire course was pretty challenging.

Short; very dirt with litter and broken bottles. Many of the holes were cramped together and jammed up against thick brush covering a creek bed. One mistake and you'll be looking for your disc for a while.

this course was okay but needs a clean up and would be better if it had a little more space.
