Boyd Hill 2+ years

Pros:

Boyd Hill is an 18 hole course with DISCatcher baskets, concrete tees, and tee signs that list distance and par - and it manages to have all of this on a small piece of land. An impressively small piece of land even.

For a par 54 course, Boyd Hill features a wide range of distances, with holes less than 200' and a hole longer than 400'. This means that players of all skill levels will get a chance to score well, but everyone will find at least a few holes that will challenge them.

The course manages to use the limited elevation well, and utilizes the creek to create interesting landing zones and risky putting greens. The creek was large, but didn't seem overly deep - and I was there when it was raining. In most places I checked, you could see the bottom, but there were some spots that were just deep enough that you would need to "rake".

Throwing your disc with the proper angle to prevent large skips or roll-aways comes in handy on many of the holes. I thought the hole design at Boyd Hill was great, with many shots offering interesting choices while maintaining a healthy mix of RHBH and RHFH favoring holes.

Cons:

Boyd Hill is not in the prettiest of areas, and would probably benefit from a park clean up day. There was an abundance of trash around the course when I played here. While I have heard it's not the nicest of areas, that didn't seem to be an issue for me. Though it's still probably best to not leave things laying out in your vehicle while you play.

I would love to see Boyd Hill get an upgrade in terms of Tee Signs. While the current signs are adequate, having a small map with the Mandos and OB labeled, would really go a long way. As it stands I just played asphalt and the creek as if they were OB.

However, the biggest issue with Boyd Hill is that it may have sacrificed overall Course Design, for individual Hole Design. The course feels cramped, with multiple baskets placed close to each other, fairways running parallel with others, with no barrier, an abundance of necessary Mandos, crossing fairways, etc.

Hole 6's double, double Mando is going to seem gimmicky for a lot of players. Especially because of how close and narrow the first gap is. When in reality, only the second double Mando would be necessary to serve the purpose needed to keep drives from interfering with the other holes on the course. Hole 18, probably only needed a single mando, and not a double - but I guess the right side one could help prevent people from throwing into the road.

Holes 8 & 10 have crossing fairways, but they both cross fairly early into the fairway, but far enough away from the tee, that it should rarely cause a problem, unless the course gets extremely crowded.

Hole 12 drives directly towards Hole 6's tee. In fact, the only real shot available from Hole 12's tee is directly over Hole 6's tee. Which only further adds frustration to the double, double of Hole 6 because that tee could have been moved to potentially avoid this issue altogether.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I would say Boyd Hill is a fun course, and definitely worth checking out if you are in the area. I am giving Boyd Hill a 2.5 rating, largely in part to the number of Mandos and crossing fairways. If the course were to be slightly tweaked, even to just remove the crossing fairways, I think the course would warrant a small bump in rating. While the course is definitely crammed into a small space, I have to believe some of the tees could be re-positioned and some of the fairways reshaped to prevent crossing fairways here. In the meantime, the course is fun and quick to play so it shouldn't be overlooked.

Pros:

For a park of this size, there is a decent amount going on. A mix of open and wooded holes all feature a moderate amount of moderation. Several holes cross a small creek that traverses the length of the property.
There are some cool shots here, especially some of the creek ones, especially 6 and 11 which play through tight gaps over the creek. There is 8 which goes downhill tightly through the woods and there is 9, which plays uphill through the woods on a nice RHBH anny line. 16 is fun with the basket in a depression. 17 makes really good use of the terrain on the far side of the creek, offering a blind ace run that goes up and down a hill.
Easily navigable for the most part. The tees are typically in sight of the previous basket and you encounter several tees earlier in the round that you play them so memory is your friend here. It has the makings of a very quick round.
The course plays a lot bigger than its footprint, with trees, elevation a creek all contributing to a solid mix of hole shapes, lengths and styles.

Cons:

The layout could be a three but there are some serious issues. The first is somewhat caused by the small footprint for the park. There is a lot of fairways butting up against each other. This is somewhat mitigated by the fact that I doubt you are likely to encounter few other golfers here. But there is one tee that is pointed directly at another. There is a tee that is point directly at a tree.
The second is likely caused by the area of town. There is an absurd amount of broken glass in some areas. It is like shells at the beach. Just an unbelievable amount. Also the creek is not something you want your discs to fall in. There is a film to the water that makes it unappealing to fish out your discs.
Worth a play if you are already playing Winthrop but not a destination.

Pros:

while I heard that this course was in the ghetto and could be dangerous I may have beat that by going at 930 am. I guess the Crack heads arn't awake that early so I didnt see anyone shady at all.

It had some good holes in the woods7- 17 were all pretty interesting and I liked 1 &2 as well.

The creek didnt look very nasty to me

For the limited space avalible the course has some good holes

Cons:

Mandos. There are almost too many on this course and they seem to be the main theme. Several double mandos which I guess prove as some sort of protection for holes that are too close together but some seem like they shouldnt be there.

Hole 12's tee plays directly across hole 6's tee. Thise made no sense from a design standpoint to me since hole 6 sits a few feet from 3 trees with double mandos that force you through a gap less than 2 discs wide and seemed dumb since there was another double mando 30' past that. If the pad was just on the other side of the first trees it this would not be a problem.

Little glass around hole 6 and 12 but It was not all over the place.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I'd say this course is worth the play even with the my issues with it. The overuse of mandos and the tee on 6 is mostly what lowered my rating from a 3 to a 2.5. The course is worth the play if you are in Rock Hill.

It was a beautiful day when I played this course and the park seemed nice although I have heard rumors of this place being borderline dangerous to play. I suggest trying early morning on a weekday to avoid this issue if you can because it seemed to work for me.

Pros:

Recently added concrete teepads have been a big improvement to this course. Very createful use of mandos, and nice use of elevation make this a fun course to play.

Cons:

Would benefit from nice tee signs. Lots of litter on and around course.

Other Thoughts:

Boyd Hill has some potential and the newly added teepads looks promising. If there is continued work done here the course could become quite nice.

Pros:

Well established park with other amenities. Terrain variety.

Cons:

Neglected course. Tee signs not up to date/standard. Trash. Broken glass, tetanus shot waiting to happen.

Other Thoughts:

The setting is a nice park with the first holes on maintained lawn. After hole 4, the course plays across a small ravine with a creek in it, into a non-maintained, heavily treed, hilly area. Hole six has the most insane mando ive ever seen. A small opening between two trees right in front of the teepad. I think this is to keep you from going for the basket as the fairway goes back across the same ravine and the mando will force you to lay up to the ravine. You don't want to go into the ravine. After hole six the course has several tight wooded tee shots that are tough but fair. You can work on controlling your midrange drives on those holes. The course then plays back towards the front of the park where it is more open, but still with lots of foliage to deal with. Overall it's a fun course, you don't need to be a big arm thrower to do well here. Accuracy and playing casual rounds with your friends would be best for this course. In other words, its hard to take this course too seriously for the following reasons.
The overall course looks to be neglected for the most part. The tee signs need maintenance. I got lost several times, some tee signs are missing, others have a little arrow below the sign on the post, but even that doesn't help sometimes (hole 12/13). There are HUGE amounts of broken glass, don't wear flip flops. The glass tells me a lot of people play this course, so its pretty popular.
Its also popular with the homeless community, which starts to appear later in the day. Its probably not a good idea to be there later in the evening on your own.
There are a couple of issues with course design, such as trees being too close to the baskets, hole 16? has trees on 2 sides of the basket, two feet away from it.
Crazy mando on hole 6. Crossing fairways, I think, on holes twelve and five. I couldn't find teepad 12 so maybe this isnt the case.
With a little bit of TLC, this course could be better than it is, in its present condition. I enjoyed playing there but compared to what else is offered in the area, it would not be my first choice. i typically give higher ratings for courses that have the minimum - established teepads, teesigns, and real baskets. But the condition of the course keeps it from getting anything higher than a 2.5, if it was cleaned up and maintained this course could get a 3 rating easily.
