Suburban Life Ain't What It Seems drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a super easy pitch and put course that plays around the perimeter of a suburban park. The course is beginner friendly, with no holes measuring over 225ft - I used a Roc and Aviar the whole round, while wearing flip flops.

There are natural tee pads, marked by 2ft green posts. Some have the hole number and length painted on them, some don't.

They made use of the trees they had available to them, giving a small bit of challenge on the first few holes.

The park is well maintained and the walking path is used by quite a few people. There are trash cans andbenches around the walking path that goes along the course, but nothing at any tee areas.

Cons:

There isn't a course sign/map, or accurate tee signs.

The course plays through the park, intertwining with a lot of the park amenities, I can see this being a problem on a busy day with lots of kids out playing soccer or in the park in general.

The last 3 holes have a confusing layout and have you finishing in a corner of the park, well away from the parking area.

I didn't see a restroom.

Other Thoughts:

This course would be nice to have for a warm-up round if you live in the adjacent neighborhood. It is definitely not a destination stop, unless you're trying to bag them all.

This was a nice break from a day of longer courses.

Friendly neighborhood Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 8, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Obviously, this isn't a notable course. It's not a challenging course. And it definitely isn't a destination course. But if this course were in my neighborhood, within walking distance, I would play it all the time.

Every shot is an approach shot, so it makes an excellent practice area. I'd go when it wasn't busy and play the nine holes again and again, trying out different putters and midranges.

The tees are really all you need on a course like this. A short post, easily identifiable from the previous basket, tells where to tee off from and includes the key information: hole number, distance and directional arrow.

The available space is actually utilized quite well. A few things are marginally in the way, but I couldn't imagine a better nine holes on the spot.

Cons:

But, it is just nine short holes, all of them completely in the open, where the only possible obstacles will be other people.

It wasn't a problem when I popped in, but I could see the course being unplayable at times with people

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't make the trip there unless I felt like warming up for Medard, but its a nice example of what a neighborhood can do with a small space and nine quality baskets.

Small Residential Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very well maintained
Course is in a safe location
You will not lose a disc
Good course to expose kids to disc golf
Nice place to warm up

Cons:

No tee pads or signs, only posts with an arrow on top pointing to the basket
Not challenging
-Very short holes
-No elevation change
-Every hole is wide open and straight on
Poor Layout
-Too many other activities in the same area put people not playing disc golf in play
-The fairways of holes 7 and 8 intersect

Other Thoughts:

The first thing you will notice about this park is that it is residential. Being surrounded by a relatively nice neighborhood means that the course seems safe and is well maintained. However, the poor layout and small space overshadow these benefits. I would not recommend this course for anyone but those with children playing with you or as a quick warm up before going to Limona Park 10 minutes away.

Buckhorn: A Course for Greenhorns 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 28, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Nearly impossible to lose a disc. No water hazards (a rarity in area courses) and just a few fences you might throw over. Luckily, you can walk easily around the fences to retrieve your disc.
-Good beginner course to learn the game without getting too frustrated with lost discs or thick woods.
-Good "pitch and putt" course for the more experienced players.

Cons:

-Course shares a park with a playground, basketball court, volleyball court, and walking path, all of which are in play on various holes. On crowded days, several shots might be dangerous to other park goers. Unfortunately, the park is too small to fix this problem with a redesign.
-A few of the fairways cross each other. Again, busy days may cause problems.
-A couple holes have nothing going on. Just wide open shots with absolutely no obstacle or hazard. I'm all for having beginner courses, but I've always felt that every hole should have at least one obstacle, taking out one side of the fairway or the other, or punishing long shots, etc.

Other Thoughts:

Buckhorn is a small, flat, city park with a kids playground, basketball court, volleyball court, small soccer field, and walking path, in addition to the 9-hole disc golf course. The couple of times I've been there, the grass has been freshly cut, and I just played a round shortly after heavy rain and had no problems with flooding or soggy areas.

The holes are all really short and won't give any trouble to experienced players. The main obstacles in the park are a handful of mature trees, but unfortunately, the playground and other park equipment come into play on a few holes. This, along with the lack of imagination on a couple of other holes is the reason for the low rating.

Though the course isn't hard, it is the best course in the area to take first time players, since all the other ones nearby seem to have numerous water hazards. It can also be a fun course for advance players to have a relatively stress free round with lots of ace runs (okay, 9 ace runs), and plenty of upshot and putting practice (I always play this course with a single midrange disc).

My guess is that most seasoned players won't find a reason to play more than once, and it probably isn't worth the trip if you aren't already in the area.
