Pros:

Great variety of holes: wooded vs. open, a few short vs. quite a few fairly long (400+), wide boundaries vs. tight w/ OB on either side.

Cons:

weaves in/out of pavilions or other activities, quite a few holes use the street as OB, OB over fence by interstate difficult to retrieve discs.

Other Thoughts:

well maintained, tee boxes are nice, not as hilly as red. Most boxes have benches or tables. Both courses can get busy on weekends.

Blue Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Local Pro's use this course over the red, for it's degree of difficulty. There's long holes and short. Some nice birdie chances. It's a change of pace from the red course.

Cons:

Some holes can be a hassle with the volume of people using other parts of the parks i.e. basketball, pavillions, etc. Some hole can punish you if you make a mistake, mostly holes 5 and 7. If you are new and have a problem with your throws going left, you should be careful as discs are easily lost in some of the brush on the other side of fence.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a good course and can be a nice alternative when traffic on the red course is heavy!

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 7, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great mix of holes, some long, some not so long; some right to left, some left to right; and some wooded, some open. Every hole has a concrete teepad. A great course and there is another course that uses the same parking area. A few small creeks are well used to add to your thoughts about where you need to throw your disc.

I think longer throwers will appreciate this course more than anyone. If you can throw 380'-400', every hole is deucable. Sure, you will have to sink a 50+' putt on #4 though if that is your absolute max, but that is not impossible. Because of this and the shot shapes and lines that are required, this course takes your best to score well, but really low scores can be seen.

Risk vs Reward is high on this course. OB fences, creeks, and pavement can make you think twice about where you want to run at that chance for 2. Also, several of the tight wooded holes have more than one path to the basket so you have to make a choice before your throw and stick with it. Make sure you are mentally prepared.

There are water faucets behind the pavilion near hole 1 of the Red course and near the pavilion after hole 10. There are bathrooms near hole 15.

Cons:

-Lacking good tee signs. These would be needed to let people know about the OB, island holes (3 and short 8), and distance to each basket position. They could also be used to aid in navigation. Right now, they only show the best path to each basket, and one distance.

-Difficult to navigate. Remember to cross the road after holes 8 and 15. I had to have someone that knew the course well to show me where to go the first 3-4 times I played it.

-Some of the baskets are beat a bit, but most catch really well. The first basket has a place where a disc can go through it if it hits at just the right angle, I have never seen this happen during a round though.

-When wet, the older teepads (the straight rectangle ones that are small in width) are extremely slippery. The newer ones are usually fine in any condition.

-There were Christmas lights all over the 16th and 17th holes and it is early November. On 16, there are reigndeer lights right in front of the tee box and in line with the fairway. I did manage to get over them and make a good throw, but it took a bit of effort. On 17, the tee is elevated a bit and the lights are all over the fairway. I took a natural throw and didn't have a problem with the lights, but if you can't throw 250 feet with some height, you won't get past them. I aimed right over the "E" in the giant "NOEL" lights and let my disc go over it and the creek behind it and fade to the basket.

Any other time of year, there is no problem.
*Update* Winter 2010/11, the baskets were pulled on the holes where the Christmas lights came into play because of people breaking or stealing the lights and equipment. The rest of the course was also technically closed during that time.

Other Thoughts:

-This would be a 4.5 or 5 rating to me if navigation was easier, the baskets were replaced, and it wasn't all par 3. I feel that the course could be so much better with some true multi-shot holes, but with the area that it was put in, it is probably the best that it could be. It is definitely worth playing if you are anywhere near the Little Rock area.

-There is a hole in the fence to the left of the 5th tee so you can go get your disc if you throw it over, but there is plenty of room to the right of the fairway so there shouldn't be a problem with throwing over the fence. There is also a hole in the fence past the tee on the 7th hole if you throw over.

-The creeks are about 2-5 feet wide when they are full and are not deep enough to eat your plastic for good. You can retrieve your disc from just about anywhere without getting your feet wet. The creek to the right of 4 is used as OB in or across it. On 5 it is used as OB if thrown into it. The long creek on 5 is casual as is the water on 8. On 16 and 17, the creek to the right (the same creek as on 4) is OB if you are in it or across it. On 18, the creek and everything to the left is OB, you have to throw over the creek on your tee shot.

My new home course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 12, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A great mix of open and wooded shots. A little elevation change. Benches on most holes. Multiple basket positions on most holes. Great use of out of bounds. Locals are generally friendly and easy to approach. Restrooms and water. Bring the wife and kids and they can play at Funland across the street or on the rocket slide. No other park users to get in your way 'cause the course doesn't interfere with any other park users.

Cons:

Signage is old and weak. Course can be a little confusing especially when you go from 8 to 9. Baskets are older and some are a little rough.

Other Thoughts:

The local Disc Golf scene is just really starting to emerge here. We are doing alot to improve the course. Please be patient. Come out on Sundays at 9am and Fridays at 5pm for doubles and handicap league. There used to be only one course here at the park and now we have 2 right next to each other.

After you play 8 look to your left across the road to the parking lot for the softball fields. You'll see a blue bench that is where the tee pad for is.

Pros:

*A couple of holes are pretty good.
*Nice tee boxes.

Cons:

*Baskets are not marked well.
*No signs to tell you where to go next.

Other Thoughts:

Wow! I really thought the State Championship courses would look better than this. It is nice to have the concrete tee boxes, but there is no method to the order of the baskets. It is maintained well with the exception of the fact the baskets are falling apart.

Good Stuff! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- This course was truly a championship style course. Beautifully designed, long grassy shots with creeks - creek beds anyways - crossing the fairways. Wooded, dirt, tight gap shots; open, long grassy shots... and none of them "easy". Tons of OB - one hole has OB on both sides and bisected by a creek at about the distance a drive would land... nice.
- Proximity to the red course. It's always nice to be able to bag two courses in a few hours while road trippin for courses. (I was able to play 4 courses that day).
- And, the great directional signs on the freeway and throughout the park.
- Tons of memorable shots. Some of these holes were very well designed. Especially the front nine. Awesome!

Cons:

- It was Humid as $#@*. I was sweating balls at like 8:00 am.
- Lack of signage. In order for this course to receive a higher rating (I could have easily given this course a 4.5) it needs signage. These holes are long... and to know the distances would be a huge benefit to your round. Hole 3 has an island with an ob mote around it... you would never know they painted an ob line if you weren't with a local (or had played it before).

Other Thoughts:

- Saw the cops rolling through this town like crazy! They were out to get everyone. And, while playing I saw a few patrol the park.
- Saw guys out there doing work on the course... which means its improving. Now, if they could only get that signage (and make 'em good signs when you do finally get 'em guys... the course deserves it).
My Score: 0 (with a few left behind).

Well designed, lots of variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fairly long course, majority of holes are wooded. Water hazards on several holes from which discs can be easily retrieved. Free. Very little interference from pedestrians and others using the park. Multiple pin placements for most holes.

Cons:

Can be tough to navigate for people who have not played before.

Other Thoughts:

Of the two courses at Burns, this one is my favorite. Lots of chances to go long with your driver. Even the wooded holes offer relatively open fairways. Well maintained by an active and enthusiastic club.

More open than the Red but still pretty wooded 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good mix of open and wooded. Good variety of distances. Some of the wooded holes are pretty difficult. There is a creek in play on a few holes, but isn't too deep to get your plastic back. After playing the Red it was a nice change but not too drastic. Well kept. I saw a parks guy there picking up stuff. Between the local group and the parks guys, both of these courses are the most well kept pair that I have played. More than enough benches to rest. Fun course to play. Friendly locals. One guy knew about this site but he didn't ask my screen name so I figured he wasn't a dgcoursereview junkie like me and I assume many others. This site with the reviews and the pictures allows you to know what you are getting yourself into and to pick out the types of courses that you prefer. I really never thought about what courses outside of my area might be like until discovering this website.

Cons:

Difficult to navigate in a few places. I was lucky and followed a local. He was extremely friendly and helpful. He was surprised to discover that one of the baskets had been moved about 150-200 ft. I think hole 9.(the first hole after you cross the street for 9-15) not a con just in info. Hole 11 or 12 is a throw and pray shot I hit a tree 3 times on that hole. Need better tee signs Houcks maybe.

Other Thoughts:

This in my opinion is a very good course and I would recommend playing both of them if you are in the area or don't mind driving a few hours to play 36 holes at Burns baby Burns.

More challenging than the red course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 16, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course starts out with the first couple of holes in the same wooded area as the red course, but then opens up into a much more open area for a few holes. There is a creek that runs along holes 4-8 for OB but is easy to get discs back from if you needed to. Great Holes: Hole 4 is a great long hole across a field of white flowers (in the Spring when I was there at least). Hole 5 is another awesome hole that shoots down a hill with a fenceline that runs the full length of the fairway on the left and has a creek that crosses the fairway in two different places to a basket about 450 feet out. Hole 7 is a cool tight hole with the same fenceline running the left side of the fairway. Holes 9-15 is across the road into another area with a lot of trees. This section had much less defined fairways from the rest of the course and from the red course. 16-18 are much easier to finish out the round. The blue course definitely had more long holes and more variety than the red course. Concrete tee pads and located in a park with a lot to do.

Cons:

The blue course was not quite as much fun as the red course was. The blue course is also much more difficult to navigate, especially between holes 8 and 9. The basket for hole 8 actually says "17" on it and then the next tee box that you would intuitively go to is for hole 16. You have to cross the road and hunt for hole 9's tee box. Once you find that, your next challenge is to figure out where 9's basket is as it is not easy to locate in a mess of trees with no defined fairway and about 350 feet out. Most of the rest of the course is fairly easy to navigate. You may have to do a little bit of hunting when you are back in the area where holes 9-15 are. For some reason hole 12 did not have a concrete tee pad when I was there. It was the only one out of 36 holes at Burns Park. The baskets were old and beat up but double-layered chains caught okay. The red course has alternate tee pads to choose from, the blue course did not have them as far as I could tell. Not as much elevation change as the red course...for the most part pretty flat.

Other Thoughts:

I thik that the blue course is the more challenging of the two courses at this park. The blue requires both accuracy and power, with several holes through trees in the 350 to 450 foot range.

Blue- Flat in the Field 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2007 Played the course:once

Pros:

Park has 36 holes. Both courses start and end from the same parking area (think mini-golf set-up!) This course is mostly flat and more open than the red course. A few open shots and ditches to navigate. There weren't the memorable holes of the red course, but I don't remember any stupid holes either. If I remember correctly, I think some of the back 9 was across the road.

Cons:

Course was a little hard to navigate at times, and some baskets were hard to find, but we managed. Road comes into play on a couple of holes- watch for cars and disc scuffing!

Course seemed like it wasn't played too much when I was there- in fact the whole park (which contains a lot of stuff, including carnival type rides) seemed to be deserted- and it was summer.

Other Thoughts:

Of the 2 courses I felt like this was a more solid course factoring in all 18 holes- nothing special, but nothing awful. It is a plus that another course is right there.

If I was passing through Little Rock again I would probably stop and play both courses.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good new concrete tees. This course is challenging, but a lot of fun to play. The variety is really good, with some long open holes, long tight holes, short open holes, and short tight holes. Holes that favor lefties and righties. You will need most every shot in your bag for this course.

There are a couple of bathroom houses on the back half of the course.

Cons:

The course does not loop back at the half way point. This course would be difficult for newcomers, but the other course in the park compliments this one well. Only 1 hole was yet to have a concrete tee. It can be difficult to find your way to some holes.

Other Thoughts:

The only time I played this course was in a pro championship tournament, so set up was in its most difficult positions (not sure how many different positions there are). It was very obvious to me that the local club had worked very hard in preparation for this big tournament, so the park was in pristine condition. The fairways were clean and a lot of cons I read from the other reviews seemed to be cleared up in my opinion. The park is really easy to get to off the interstate. As a blue level pro player, I enjoyed this course a lot more than the Red course. The balance was better, it was more of a challenge, and the fairways were a lot more fair.

Different than Red, good for some 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2004 Played the course:never

Pros:

Long and open on many holes
Good long walk on mostly flat ground

Cons:

Less traffic than Red, sees much less TLC and marking. Expect to get lost possibly on some holes - the unpainted baskets blend in well with trees during some seasons.

Other Thoughts:

I like this course, but don't play it often because the Red course is more my style and easier to get in and out of for me. If you have a large group who haven't played much, this might be a better choice because it is lower traffic and more open (and away from the freeway sans one or two holes).

I like the Red Course more... 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 10, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Some good distance
Open shots (more for big arms or beginners not worried about making near par)

Cons:

Redundant for me
Since the Red course plays to my interests, it's hard to be fair reviewing the Blue Course
Some of the "fairways" on this course are nothing more than a random maze of trees with no real channel or tunnel...seems like luck more than skill is needed
Not as well signed as the Red Course

Other Thoughts:

After the first couple of times playing both courses, I now only play the red course....
If you have a big arm or if you like longer holes and aren't into heavily wooded courses, you would like this course much better than the Red one...

Burns 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

Two full 18 hole courses both well marked, fun, and providing a balanced challenge. The red course stays in the woods for almost every hole with some tunnels being very tight and others being more open. Elevation changes can be a factor. The distance of the red course is moderately low, but you need to be on your game to score well. The blue course also has some tight tunnel shots in the woods, but the majority of this course is longer and more open. There is less elevation change and trees but that is made up for with the longer distances.

Cons:

Some holes not as well marked as you would like. Some gaps are almost non existent, you just throw and pray. Most times that I have played I have seen trach lying around.

Other Thoughts:

The courses have been around for a long time and it has the feel of a nice worn in DG course. One of the finest courses in a large area and well worth a full day.
