Pros:

First off, I would like to compliment the students of Caledonia High School. Usually, when I play a course at a high school or junior high, there is always some vandalism. Now while there are no signs to scribble on or paint or tear down here, the Discatchers are in remarkably nice condition. There were no baskets that looked someone had climbed on or attempted to bend over. There was no grafitti or any type of vandalism. So I've become a fan of the Caledonia High School Fighting Scots! I'll make sure to watch when I see their highlights on Sports Center. Go Fighting Scots!

Now about this target audience thing? When you design a course, you must have a target audience in mind, right? On this course, who was this course aimed at? High school PE classes filled with kids who can't throw 100 feet and have no control? The local disc golf community? Professional disc golfers? Or the one faculty member who actually plays disc golf? If I was designing a course at a high school, I would target those students and therefore, keep the hole distances short, provide a safe environment, stay away from school activities and keep these players away from fences, wetlands and anywhere where they might lose or have to hunt for their discs. And, finally I'd want for them to have fun and have some success. I don't think this course met those goals. And yes, I certainly do realize the limitations placed on the designers here.

The course starts near the entrance with # 1 playing to a basket up near the corner. There is tall grass all along the left side of the fairway. # 2 also has tall grass on the left side of it's fairway. # 3 throws across the tall grassy area. 4-5-6 are all unplayable when there is a softball game being played. The # 4 basket is just behind the backstop and # 5 plays a tight little fairway down to the left field foul pole. # 6 plays back up this same narrow fairway. #7 plays to a basket set near the tall grass on two sides. And then # 8 is open but probably 300' aiming off towards the elementary school. # 9 is a straight shot with the tall grass on the right. At least, if each of these holes were shorter, students (and other players) would have a better chance of staying out of trouble.

Cons:

There are no signs of any kind.
There are no tee pads.
The challenge here is partly staying out the tall grass and partly, staying out the way of activities.
The course is pretty bland but in defense of the designers, I'm not sure what choice they actually had.

Other Thoughts:

I'm so impressed with the lack of vandalism. The course has been in place two or three years now so those students who just love destroying stuff have has ample time and just maybe, they're not interested in these baskets. Maybe, this is just a wonderful neighborhood and school. Maybe, I'll be waking up now.

I guess if I lived really close, I might play once in a while. There are many better course choices within a 10 mile radius of the school.

Go Fighting Scots!
