Solid Elementary School Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

It is always good to see disc sports incorporated into local schools, and here at CB Eller, disc golf is on the menu. The course here plays in and around the fields to the side of the school which also inlude a baseball diamond, playground, and a running track with fit stations.

The course itself is a 6 hole loop at the moment, and course design made good use of all the available terrain. In a good piece of design, the final hole fininshes right beside the first tee so multiple loops could be done with ease.

The tees, with exception of #1 are concrete. Hole one starts on the asphalt corner of the parking lot by the kiosk. Kiosk shows hole layout and clearly states OB. Seeing as this is a school course, there were good decisions made to make the road and the parking lot OB to keep play away from traffic.

The course itself is pretty easy, and most holes are short - requiring only a putter or midrange off of the tee. There are just enough obstacles in the way to keep players interested, but it is clear that the target audience for this course is beginners.

Cons:

First con is the obvious - it is only 6 holes. That makes it difficult to really get interested in the course.

Even though there is a nice kiosk, the hole signs that used to mark the teepads have all been destroyed. Navigation isn't really all that difficult but hole signs would be nice.

The teepads also are a bit lacking. They are very very short, so using them for a run-up isn't all that easy. 5's short teepad backs up to a fence so a run-up is actually impossible on that hole.

Hole 1's tee is on the asphalt from the parking lot. I am not sure that is the safest option given this is an elementary school

Hole length variety is very minimal.

It felt odd using the fit station signs beside the track as obstacles on #3, they seemed like things that the school wouldn't realy want discs regularly banging off.

With the other amenities in the park, I can see where interference could be a major problem. The course would be nearly unplayable if there were runners or a baseball game.

The QuikShot baskets had very weak chains and I found them quick to spit-out a disc.

Other Thoughts:

I appreciate the course being available for public use. This is, for an on-school course, a very successsful venture. The available land was used as well as possible, and the safety concerns, though present, seem to be well managed by the smart design.

I find it very difficult to rate this course. It is only 6 holes, and it clearly is designed to introduce people to the sport, If there were a few more holes there to at least make it a 9 holer, the rating might go up. But given the sparse land available, it may have been a smart idea to only use 6 baskets here.
