Rolling hills with some fun lines

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Decided to go a little out of my way to play Cedarock so I could try and bag both courses since they both rate well.

As you drive in the park is huge and beautiful. There are horses, cows, sheep, walking trails, biking trails and even foot golf. Plus two 18 hole courses.

I'm in!

This one is the first course you come to by a gazebo and bathrooms, it also has a turf putting green which is very cool around the practice basket.

All of the holes have two tees and many have a third, I played the blues which are the longest and I would say that from those tees it's a solid blue level course. You throw a lot of mids and fairways here since many holes are in the 250-375ft range, but there are also some longer par 4s where you can break out a driver and give it a crank.

Baskets are discatchers and though they aren't new we're all in good shape. The baskets have little next tee arrows on them which is always welcome. Pads were concrete and taper towards the front, they also have a corner painted the color of the layout you are playing (blue/white/red) which is very helpful. Signs ar simple but accurate and helpful. Benches on many, though not all holes.

The property is a mix between mildly wooded(lots of huge old hardwoods and younger pines) and rolling hill pasture type terrain. This made for an enjoyable variety and some cool hole shapes.

Nice bridges were needed to cross the creek that splits the course.

I think it's a fun variety and test of different skills, so if you can hit lines but don't have distance, you can score on some holes, the same if you throw bombs but can't shape shots, everyone has some holes they can score on even if you can't shred.

The amount of birds of this course was amazing if you are at all ornithologically inclined.

Cons:

It's a really solid track but there are a few things that keep it off the 4 rating I wanted to give it. I'm no James Conrad, but on some of these longer holes the pads are too short. A 6 ft pad is fine for holes under 400ft, but for some of these 500-700+ ft holes you need a bit more room.

The navigation is mainly targeted at the White pads. They are probably original and most played, but if you are looking for blues you need a map or you won't find some of them. A few are very far from the rest of the pads.

The blues are normally just a slightly longer position with maybe a slight added challenge but a few of them where there was no room to move it back they just made a weird angle, it may not have been totally necessary to add another pad for those.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a very enjoyable course in a beautiful park, if I'm back by I would love to play it again in better weather.

The Great Wide Open 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great signs.
Great practice/warm-up area near #1. Always appreciated!
Very well-maintained; grass mown, trails clear of debris and
trash and baskets are in good shape.
No trouble off the tees; you can bomb it and will need to in a few cases.
As I am not long off the tee, this course forced me to make two and sometimes three excellent shots to get the putter in my hand. A great challenge and change of pace from the wooded, technical places I typically play.

Cons:

Tee pads, as mentioned by everyone, are too short.
Sometimes difficult to navigate. A couple of spots have a profusion of baskets and tees due to the layout of the holes. Easily solved but takes some looking at the signs, searching for the right basket based on the map, etc.

Other Thoughts:

Really fun place to play. Play this to loosen up, then play Wellspring. Drive down the road and eat at Hursey's BBQ. That's an awesome day of disc golf!

Open up your mind 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cedarock is located on a beautiful piece of property in a park that also has fishing, hiking and equestrian trails, a farm and many other amenities. The shop with discs and snacks is a welcome sight at any park.

This course is not typical of Piedmont area courses. It was fun to air it out (such as it is for me) on a few drives and second shots.

This course was a lot of fun for my dad and I even though we prefer wooded courses. I was not expecting the variety of shots necessary to play a course so open. There was enough elevation change and trees sprinkled about to keep things interesting.

I threw forehand, backhand, hyzer and anny including a big hyzer on 10 to get over the trees. That was a fun gap to play!

The course itself appeared to be freshly mowed and well maintained in general.

I understand this course gets crowded. We got there as the park opened and only saw one other group, so we had time to search for tee pads and errant discs without being rushed.

Cons:

Take a map. The layout is not intuitive. The signs help, but a little scouting to make sure you are throwing to the correct basket may help.

I think I understand the tee pads that correlate with a certain basket position, but some baskets are blind so I wasn't sure where to throw from. When in doubt we threw from the shorts.

The tee pads are super small in most cases.

Other Thoughts:

This course was a lot of fun and I'm glad we played it. I had played Wellspring on five different occasions without even giving the open course a look.I recommend playing as soon as the park opens this time of year. It will be brutally hot in the afternoon.

This is a great accompaniment to Wellspring right next door. We did not do the figure 8, but the courses are close enough it is easy to play them individually while parked in one spot.

I think I would prefer to play both of these courses in the fall and winter when it's cooler on Cedarock and less foliage on Wellspring.

Disc Golf Oasis 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Not to belabor the point in the previous 50 reviews, but it's true: Cedarock is unique among North Carolina courses. It's wide open. Field golf, meadow golf, ball golf style...whatever you want to call it. There are a few trees strategically placed (some baskets are nicely guarded), but for the most part, this is just long, wide open golf.

The other big positive for me, besides the course's uniqueness, is the use of elevation. There are nice downhills, uphills, valley shots, and holes that start uphill, but finish to blind downhill baskets.

There's also a nice hole--one of the few with trees to contend with off the tee--that you have to throw high through a tunnel, in between branches on the left, right, above, and below. Neat hole and different.

Other positives:
- There's a pro shop where you can buy discs and snacks. So cool. All courses should have pro shops!
- Great amenities. Clean bathrooms and lots of other activities at the park (fishing, beach volleyball, canoeing, grilling out).
- The course is beautiful and exceptionally well maintained.

Cons:

I have the same two cons that have been mentioned in previous reviews: the tee pads aren't great and navigation isn't always intuitive (the multiple tees and baskets on every hole can be confusing), but this is nitpicking. It's an excellent course.

Other Thoughts:

As a standalone course, I would dock it for being *too* wide open and not having much variety. As a course, I rate it a 3.5. But for 36 holes of golf, together tlwith Wellspring, these courses are close to a 4.0. You can play them as a figure 8 (jump from one course to the other), or each as standalone rounds. However you chose to play the Cedarock courses, consider them a 36-hole disc golf oasis and leave yourself enough time to play every hole at least once.

2 Courses, 1 Round 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 14, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Ball Golf Like. The grass fairways and scenery of the course give you that "ball golf" course feel. As a former ball golfer, I enjoy that aspect of the course. Plus, it's a beautiful park.
- Grip it and Rip it. Cedarock is a relatively wide-open, grass fairway course that allows you to grip it and rip it on several holes. However, that's not to say that the holes don't require you to shape shots around trees, or be conscious of thick rough. I can see why the course has the hype it does... very rarely in NC do you get an open, grass fairway, grip it and rip it hole... let alone a whole course worth.
- Two Courses, One Park. I love when I can bag two new courses in one great location. Especially two courses that are completely different from one another. At Cedarock / Wellspring, you can jump-on / jump-off of each course mid-round and hook into the other course to make a 36 hole round. Otherwise you'd have to drive to the other courses' parking lot to start your second round. To do so, after finishing Cedar's 8th hole, you can jump onto Wellspring at Hole 16... play out the course through Hole 15 and then jump back onto Cedarock at Hole 9. This worked for me... and helped to break up the monotony of the relatively wide-open Cedarock.

Cons:

- Confusing Tee-Signs. Let me start off by saying that the tee-signs are beautiful and work well once you understand how to interpret them. With that said:
The tee-signs are confusing at first, showing two pin positions and two (sometimes more) tee-pad locations. The pins and tee-pads are color coded (red, white, blue, gold... and sometimes a blend of two colors) to help you understand what's what. However, the tee-signs make it appear as though there are 4 options per hole (Short Tee to Short Pin, Short Tee to Long Pin, Long Tee to Short Pin and Long Tee to Long Pin)... which may seem normal, but 4-option holes are commonly seen at Charlotte courses, so that's how I was interpreting the signs. However, there are really only 2 options. This is because there is really only 1 pin in the ground (either in the long or short), giving you two options (short-pad to pin placement, or long-pad to pin placement). And, depending upon the pin placement the pin is in, and the tee-pad you choose to play from, you will be playing a certain color hole (red, white, blue, gold).
Also note: on the holes where there is only 1 pin position and the basket never moves, there are up to 4 tee-pad locations.
- The Wrong Basket. There are too many holes where you can see a different hole's basket from the tee-pad. I threw at the wrong basket on a few holes and had to backtrack down the fairway to re-play the holes properly. Hole 10 comes to mind: you're looking through a nice gap in the trees directly at a basket. It looks like a great shot, until you park it and then realize when you arrive on scene that it's 15's basket and that 10's basket is tucked down to the left.
- Tee-Pads: Slivers of Concrete. The tee-pads were 3' x 4' slivers of concrete. You can easily do a run up from behind the tee-pad and smoothly transition onto the sliver... however, when you're trying to have a championship(-ish) level course, nothing beats LARGE concrete tees. The problem at Cedarock seems to be that they wanted to install multiple, tee-pads for each hole instead of one really nice one.

Other Thoughts:

- Overall. Cedarock was a good time. I certainly wasn't mad at it... except for when I had to walk back down fairways after throwing to the wrong baskets. The open, grass fairway, ball-golfish, bombers are a welcome sight (especially in NC); however, that alone doesn't make a course great, or even hype-worthy. The multiple small concrete tee-pads are decent for throwing from, but could have been improved upon if they were larger... and if there were simply fewer of them (the excess of tee-pads get kind of ugly as you look across the park). The combination of having two distinctly different courses in one park definitely adds to the flavor of the location and desirability to bag it. For me, Cedarock did not live up to the hype... but then again, with two courses in one location and both being pretty decent, maybe it does / they do.
My Score: -6 (Whites: Short Tees to Long Pins)

Home on the Range 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 4, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Layout - One of the best designed open courses I've played so far. With Cedarock what you see is what you get. Rolling hills and sparse trees with a more wooded small creek area that runs right through the middle of the course. The layout uses all of these features exceptionally to create a fun and still challenging course from the longer tees.

There are multiple teepads for each hole and moving basket locations that creates 4 possible layouts. The two shorter layouts are not very challenging and give you a bunch of open birdie runs mixed with some technical shots that are shaped out of the sparse trees and treelines that run through this part of the park.

The longer configurations can give you quite a challenge by making you shoot through gaps and bend discs around trees while trying to get the distance you need. If you like to bomb and let shots rip this place is for you.

The elevation is used very well along with treelines to create risk/reward within a mostly open course. There's baskets that are big downhills with a thick treeline on the backside that punishes you for going to long. You'll need precision and distance to do well on the longs.

Again, great basket locations on slopes and tucked in to trees that make placement on your drive key. It's a placement type course because of this but there are a few areas where you'll have to hit some gaps.

The layout flows really well, no long walks and for the most part it's pretty obvious where you're going next.

Equipment - New baskets and that's a huge plus. There's excellent signage out there to explain a tricky layout configuration for first timers. A practice basket, bathroom facilities and gazebo near #1. Trashcans and benches throughout the course.

Atmosphere - Cedarock park is a beautiful place. A lot of shots are very scenic.

Cons:

Layout - For many it'll be to open, if you like really wooded technical dg this isn't it. I love to let discs fly and this is one of a few in my general area where you can; but I know for many it's not what they're looking for.

The shorter layouts for me are almost to easy, it's really just a pitch and putt out there even though the greens are well designed.

Equipment - The pads are so small it's ridiculous. For a course where you're throwing for D those pads just aren't enough.

Atmosphere - Ticks can be a huge problem here in the summer, also watch out for snakes.

Other Thoughts:

The great thing about this course is it's brother Wellspring sitting right next to it. It's a perfect combination of disc golf. You've got the open long shots of Cedarock combined with the technical wooded short shots on Wellspring and you can play these courses as one big course by playing 1-8 on Cedarock then jumping to 16 on Wellspring and playing back through 15 then jumping back on to 9 and finishing out.

This course is a ton of fun, and the enjoyment factor is why I'm giving it a 3.5. Normally I really penalize courses for not mixing it up but it's done so well here it's hard to complain, especially with Wellspring being right there.

Very open. This course has, in my opinion, a nice flow to it. The fairways are mostly very open and there are brand new disc catcher baskets on the course making it easier to find and see them.

Cons:

There is quite some distance between some of the tees and baskets. I think some of the pars on certian holes should be different. There is a horse trail along the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th and 9th holes. Watch for riders.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very nice course and is a good challenge to play.

This is an open course with holes having 2 to 4 tees. The park has another 18 holes course (Wellspring) which gives you a wooded option if that's your preference. The navigation is fairly easy, especially now that they've got new tee signs!

Other Pros:
-quiet, beautiful park
- rolling hills with well maintained grass
- 2 pin positions (change monthly)
- alternate tee positions make for great variety
- some obstacles in play and a creek

Cons:

There are no major cons.

- It can be a bit confusing trying to find the exact tee you are using for first timers.
- short tee pads

Other Thoughts:

Cedarock is a nice course but I preferred Wellspring because of the shaded woods on a hot day. The entire park is worth the visit alone.

There is tons of good disc golf in the entire area so make the trip!

Hard Cedar 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 5, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Cedarock is a classic, open course. Solid use of the terrain makes for some fun and challenging holes.
- Good variety of hole layouts. From several wide open (and less challenging) holes to doglegs; from tighter fairways to holes with elevation, the course has just about everything you'd expect from an open course. If you're looking for wooded holes, walk over to Wellspring.
- Surprisingly good elevation holes. There are a couple rolling hills throughout the course, and they're used to create some fun layouts. #9 is a solid, downhiller that will penalize you for going long. #10 & #16 include nice uphill shots to baskets.
- Dual tee pads and hole locations give the course four possible layouts, which should appeal to just about everyone. Good variety from am-shorts (great for beginners) to pro-longs (good for the big arms). Some of the holes even have three or four pads, with #5 having one for each color (layout).
- Excellent, descriptive tee signs. With dual tees and baskets, it's extremely helpful for the tee signs to have the color coding for all four layouts. It's especially helpful when there are more than 2 tee pads, or the tee pads are spaced out, as on #4.
- Course has good length. The longest layout is more than 7000 feet. Even the middle two layouts (am-long & pro short) average around 350 for each hole.
- Park as a whole is top notch. It's has a very isolated feel, is very well maintained and has great amenities throughout.

Cons:

No major issues, only a couple small things that could be improved, or need to look out for.
- Call this petty, or being a stickler, but the color coding on the scorecards and the signs/pads were different. For example, red on the scorecards was actually blue on the tee signs and tee pads. Meanwhile, scorecard blue was actually the gold layout on the tee signs. Now the gold shouldn't be confused with yellow on the scorecards. And then there was green listed on the scorecards, but not the tee signs. Confused? So was I for the first handful of holes. My point is they're different, and the simplest solution would be to update the scorecard.
- Several tee signs were missing. There were holes in the ground where they had been dug out, so hopefully they'll be back soon. With so many holes playing so close, there was a little confusion on the holes where the signs were gone.
- Tee pads could be improved. Some were too short and some had the color fading off them.
- I'm not a fan of the metal, dark baskets. It's much harder to pick up when they're in the shadows, or in wooded areas.
- I wasn't a fan of having the two most open (or, at least 2 of the 3 most open) holes being back-to-back on #7 & 8. Also, the stretch of #11, 12 & 14 were all short, unimpressive holes. At least they offered birdie chances.
- The park is pretty far from civilization, so come prepared especially if the park's store is closed. Once you get off the interstate, and out of Burlington, you only pass one or two gas station before the park. So, make sure you have your food and drinks.

Other Thoughts:

This is clearly the more challenging, and better, of the two courses. IMO, there's a big discrepancy in the overall quality of the two courses, that I'm surprised their ratings are so similar. Whereas Wellspring has an old school, small-course feel to it, Cedarock has aged relatively nicely. It does show its age at times, especially with the smaller, older tee pads.
- I love the polar opposite feel of these 2 courses, going from wide open to heavily wooded. If you don't enjoy at least one of them, I'm not sure why you'd be playing disc golf.
- It's also pretty interesting how close these courses get. You can walk from #8 basket/#7 tee area into the woods and be on #15 of Wellspring. So, you could actually play all 36 holes as part of a weird, long round if so desired.
- I thought #10 was a great hole with a creative layout. You're throwing from the side of a hill through an opening in the trees, at least 15 feet in the area, to a basket that's hidden from the tee pad. It's actually an easier, flatter shot from the pro tees because you're higher on the hill.
- The two courses are a solid 1-2 punch. You can easily spend hours here playing several rounds at both. It's an easy trip from both Charlotte and the Triangle area.

Pros:

If you want to let your arm go this is the place. There are a few holes that only top pros can get twos on from the pro tees. If you want to learn how to throw far and accurate this is a great course to do it on. Some of the holes locations are set on places that are challenging to get a disc to hold which is good variation. Not an especially crowded course especially on the weekdays.

Cons:

For how big some of the shots are its hard to understand why the teepads are not bigger. I understand its an old course though so its not too big a complaint. Im glad I know the course well by now because if I was a newcomer I would never know where to tee off. During the summer its hard to survive a round that long with no shade and 100 degree temperatures.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to make yourself better a better golfer. The teepads are notoriously small for such a big course which makes good footwork a necessity. I love the fact that this course makes the basket look like a little bitty spec in the distance! Go for it!

- Decent variety of lengths, shot types, and elevation changes.

- Multiple pin placements, often making for two completely different holes, which I'm sure adds variety for regulars. Alternate pins placements usually staked with white PVC pipe marker for future reference.

- Well manicured fairways and greens.

- Friendly locals.

Cons:

- Hole to hole signage is non-existant. Very difficult to navigate from one basket to the next tee, even with print out of aerial map.

- Tee signs don't reflect distance or pin placement.

Other Thoughts:

I was in Graham, NC for a wedding and was thrilled to see a high rated course all of six miles from my hotel, so I gave Cedarock a go. The park was very easy to find and sits just a few miles off of the interstate. However, once inside the park things were a little trickier. To my surprise, though I knew there were two courses on site from my research, I was visiting during a tournament weekend, so there was an additional temporary course set up that added to my confusion as to where to start and which course to play. A few locals steered me in the right direction, luckily, but without that help it might be a little difficult to find your way. The practice basket is a good indication of proximity to the first tee, and the course start is directly off of the first parking lot on the left, as this site notes, but the tee markers are low to the ground and somewhat hard to spot. Signage in general could be improved.

I had wanted to play the "woods" course, but I ended up playing the more open course that starts by the parking lot. I'm still not entirely sure where the wooded course began, but there is a "figure eight" possibility after the 8th green, which I'm told puts you on the 16th hole in the woods. I didn't have time to check that out, but I'm told it's much tighter and requires a lot of precision.

My biggest complaint with the course, again, is lack of adequate signage. I was lucky enough to get the heads up from two locals behind me when I mistook an old abandoned tee box for the 3rd tee, but without their help and even with a map, it's still hard to find each hole's start, as there is some significant displacement between some baskets and the next tee, and there isn't always a logical flow to the holes. I could imagine the frustration and wasted time involved in trying to figure it out on your own.

I tagged along with the two locals for the rest of the round, and I really benefitted from their local knowledge. I don't know how much of the traffic was due to the tournament, but it seemed pretty busy and, given the number of courses in the area, it seems like there's a thriving disc golf community in the area. The guys I played with were good players and very friendly, so that's a big plus.

The course itself was in great shape, with all of the grass mowed short (probably for the tournament, I was told). Other than my issues with the signs, all the other amenities were great. There are a lot of complaints on here about the tee boxes, but I didn't think they were bad at all. They're probably a little shorter than some would like, but I didn't have any complaints. There are two pin placements for most holes, and the alternate pin is generally marked with an easy to see piece of white piping, which is a big pet peeve of mine at our local course, who doesn't mark (or use for that matter) the alternate locations, so you're flying blind should they change things up. Some pins change the hole completely, especially on Hole 9, so you might want to walk the hole/course before you play so you're aware of your targets. A lot of the holes on the front are extremely long for par 3s, and there isn't a lot of variety on a lot of the first nine, but the back nine mixes things up well and overall I though the course kept things dynamic.

Overall, I thought the course was great. The guy I played with said they change the pins every month, and there are up to three tee pads on each hole, so there's good variety if you play here a lot. It's challenging but fair, with some makable birdies and some tough pars, and I hope to play again someday.

Beautiful 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 26, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Beautiful during summer and fall.
- Lots of open holes to air it out
- 4 tee positions and 2 pin positions offer a lot of variety and chances for all skill levels to have a good time.
- Well kept (not a lot of trash, mowed grass, etc.)
- Mix of short and long holes.
- Easy to get to off the highway.
- Another great course right next to it.

Cons:

- Can get monotonous (with most holes just grip it and rip it)
- Tees are kind of small.

Other Thoughts:

Overall it is a beautiful course that's well maintained and keeps me and my friends coming back all the time.

Pros:

This is the most open course I've ever played. Almost every hole is wide open, with several options on how to play it. There are four tees on each hole that make it playable at any skill level. Benches at every hole are a nice touch if you need a break. The course is in great condition and very well maintained. I played Cedarock and Wellspring on my way through town and it was a great experience. Having two courses on one property is great, and they are very different so it is worth checking them both out. If you're looking to catch some sun on a course with plenty of chances to air it out, Cedarock is for you. The shots and terrain are varied nicely, and it really is a beautiful course to play. If there wasn't another course right up the street I would have played a second round here - it's that nice.

Cons:

The only notable downside to this course is the short tees. I have played plenty of courses that had worse tees, so I don't want to focus on it too much, but they were far too short for any kind of run-up to a shot. I started every shot from a few steps behind the tee, and it worked out fine.

Other Thoughts:

I highly recommend checking out Cedarock (and Wellspring, too - if you have time for both). It's only about 10 minutes off the highway, and I was able to squeeze in a round at each course in less than 2 hours. The locals were very friendly and helpful, and the course itself is a gem. My favorite holes would have to be 10 (requires a tomahawk over a patch of trees), and 17 and 18, which both give you plenty of room to air it out.

Pros:

Beautiful open course with green grass fairways & large, mature trees sprinkled throughout. Some elevation changes. Multiple tee pads. Concrete pads.

Cons:

Need a few more benches. Tee signs a bit simple. You'll need a map to follow the course.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course one time during a tournament. Wish I could've played it again. Great course & facility. Good club support. I'll def be back!

Pros:

Nice scenery and good mixture of holes when considering Wellspring next door. Friendly locals.

Cons:

Fairly confusing, and I even had a map. Part of this confusion was the fact that apparently a basket or two had been stolen, which a local that I joined up with told me. Not a lot of variety on its own- you really need to play Wellspring also to have an all around experience.

Other Thoughts:

Two quality courses in one park is pretty cool, so if you have the time to play both you should check these courses out.
