Nice change of pace for the area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is a lot of fun to play without having to devote a large amount of time or energy into playing a rd. there is a concession stand right by hole 1 and the course flows quite well. the front and back nines are pretty much opposites with the front being a birdie fest and the back quite longer and more technical. I like to come to this course for a change of pace from the other course that is close by, Timmons. Although this course is longer its not as technical or up and down hill as Timmons.

Cons:

The front for some people can be a con. it is pretty easy and if you dont get a bunch of birds there then you are prob not going to have a great rd. I personally think its fun because you have about 5 ace runs that arent too short. and there is some elevation changes. the only other con I can think of is the walk from 18 back to the lot. this couldnt be avoided though because of the giant playground.

Other Thoughts:

I mentioned the playground and that is another positive. for those who have kids they can make it a family day with some DG and park time. nice overall park with all amenities needed. bathroom. concession. water.

Century Park DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Great medium-length 18-hole course in a clean community park
- Mostly open with lots of trees requiring carefully placed/shaped shots
- HUGE concrete tee pads
- Excellent variety of lefty/righty holes
- Good use of the mild rolling elevation
- Creek in play on several holes
- Well placed mandos on several holes
- Easy to follow layout and excellent flow from hole to hole
- New DisCatcher baskets all around
- Beginner-friendly and fun for intermediate/advanced players
- For the family: the best playground I have ever seen
- Ice cream stand, drink machines, and rest rooms near hole #1 and #9

Cons:

- No wide open boomer holes if you want to show off the longball
- May not be challenging for the most advanced players
- Park probably gets crowded when baseball games are going on

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoy medium-length courses that are more technical than distance oriented, so Century Park became an instant favorite of mine when I recently played it for the first time. While there are lots of nice little goodies such as the massive trapezoidal tee pads, there is no one big thing that stands out--the course just works. The designers have really hit a home run when it comes to fun factor. While there are certainly birdie opportunities, they are not gimmies. If this were a local course, I would be one happy disc golfer.

A DG dandy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great tees and to compliment fun/challenging holes with cool blue disc-catchers.

The front is where the money is. Birdies galore on the front. You'll need them for a way tougher back 9.

Great resting areas on almost every hole. Well thought out design.

Cons:

Some of the teesigns are missing or in bad shape. Other than that there isn't much to say. It is rather easy going here but don't let that fool you. If you let your guard down it can punish you.

Other Thoughts:

Designing a second set of tees to add a little more length would be a great idea. It would put Greer on the map for sure.

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 22, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a fun course for beginning players. Lots of very short holes to help build the confidence of new players. Tee pads are long and wide, most giving you a variety of angles to approach the basket from. The course is pretty open, but does have a few trees to contend with. Thankfully all but one of the holes have multiple lines to shoot at the basket through.

Cons:

Not the prettiest course. It's kind of scub oaky and sand (at least on the front 9). The back nine is definitely nicer. And on the front 9 you have a lot of baskets that feel like you're zigzagging back and forth, up and down the fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Super kids playground to keep the wife and kids occupied so you can play in peace!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 20, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Friendly locals, ice cream concession stand by hole 1, nice fit in small area

Cons:

Holes are on top of each other (watch for errant throws), huge kids park nearby (kids wander onto course)

Other Thoughts:

Variety (shots) - 3.5/5 - some good lines. Nothing jaw-dropping in the layout but nothing dull either

Variety (length) - 2.5/5 - mostly very short. Fun for ace runs. Some longer runs on back 9

Beauty - 2.5/5 - not the course's fault, it's just in a red-dirt mess. An extra 1/2 point for the hot moms at the park

Trackability - 4/5 - When the holes are this close, it's tough to get lost. Only a few where I even had to look around.

Lost Disc Hazard - 3/5 - Some shallow water, some dangerous rough (17) but mostly easy

Vibe - 3/5 - The locals were great. Held my dog's leash while I threw, everyone asked me if I wanted to play through, told me briefly about the course history. The folks on the outside of the park are kinda Deliverance-sketchy

Safety - 4/5 - Too crowded for too much to go wrong. Saw my first snake of the year (6' black snake).

22.5/7 = 3.21 = 3

My Everyday Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 27, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The each tee has an informative and subtle sign. Subtle because they are short 4x4 board with a nice graphic encased in Plexiglas. Some of the tee boxes have retaining walls to keep dirt from eroding onto the tee boxes. This course is constantly maintained! Trash cans have been placed inside a wooden 'locker' for safe keeping. Variation between an easy front nine and harder back nine. The course may seem short but tee shots must be precise to miss trees and traverse elevation. A course architect from Innova came to map the course out so there are some challenges. Bathroom facilities are close by with concession stands. Century Park lies next to course and is great for kids yet far enough that you don't have to worry about discs hitting kids. If the course were longer and tougher I would rate it a 5.

Cons:

Short holes. Less than a handful of holes over 320ft. No practice basket yet. I've been told the addition of a practice basket is in the works. You may throw your disc into the baseball fields on two holes. Not a big deal because there is an access.

Jeckyl & Hyde with a fun side 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great tees and great signs with cool blue disc-catchers.
A great confidence builder on the front 9 with a way tougher back 9 which is great fun.

Cons:

Front 9 is kind of back and forth so there is a chance of drives coming into your fairway.
14 can punish you but hey...punishment is all part of the game right?

Other Thoughts:

The front 9 will give you a lot of birdie shots which is a good thing because you will need them on the back 9! Hole 11 requires you to shoot a tight gap or end up in the ravine, the hole plays down, through the gap and then steeply uphill...a really fun hole.
Hole 12 is right next to the railroad tracks and you get to choose a tunnel or a tunnel (supposedly light pole is a mando so you aren't supposed to go over the baseball field).
Hole 14 has a double mando and then finishes with the basket tucked in next to the blue lagoon...ok, brown lagoon.
Hole 16 Is a sweet short downhill that you want to unload all your putters and short mids on and 17 is a rather tight fairway (for those who like to flex) with a fence on the left and a tree line on the right.

There are a lot of cool holes, even the front has some (I liked 3).

This is a fun course and the kind I would play all the time if I lived in the area. I look forward to bringing my wife here to see how she does.

It's not the hardest course in the world, sure, but it is a blast and that is what this game is supposed to be about isn't it?

Fun for all levels 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course was a fun round for me and my wife. It has great tee boxes on every hole (I love the wide back ends on a tee box). There are great wooden benches and nice wood covered trash cans about every two holes. Each hole has a "hole map" sign at the tee box that accurately shows the hole and layout. *Another pro for me was that this was a shorter course so my wife (who throws pretty straight, just not super far) was racking up pars and having legitimate birdie putts every now and again. The course was in great shape, no littering or anything of that sort. I love the entrance to the course where you walk under the "Century Park Disc Golf Course" sign and straight into the first tee box. No wandering asking where the first tee is here. The holes link up nicely, I don't think we ever went the wrong way lookging for a tee box. The baskets were all in great shape also.

Cons:

Although I like an easy course just for good scoring, this one is pretty easy. Most holes are pretty short and fairly straight. If you're a decent player looking for a challenge, then look elsewhere (but if you want to have fun and make pars and birdies come on out). I didn't really have a "trademark hole" when I was thinking back about the course, no holes really stood out for me. It could really use some holes that really turn left or right.

Other Thoughts:

*Dogs are not allowed, even though there are no signs posted by the disc golf entrance, there are on the entrance to the kid area. We took our dog (luckily didn't get fined) but the lady at the concession stand said a lot of people had been ticketed lately.

This could have easily been a 3.0 but it is so clean and with the benches/trashcans, "hole maps" it really makes the experience better for me. Once again, it isn't the most challenging, but when I'm in the area I'll definately play it and Timmons park again without hesitation.

Cons:

Not really a con... but its kind of easy. Actually, it was a 'pro' for me because it made me feel like I was awesome :). Don't come here for a challenge, come here for a relaxing game.

Reviewed: Played on:May 29, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

So much fun to be had here!
The course is great for everyone, beginners and pros alike. Beginners will like it because there are less tunnel shots/ tight threads, and the pros will like it for the same reason. After a couple rounds here, you should be taking a few strokes off your scorecard.
Teepads are some of the best I've ever played on, as are the baskets and the signs that show the holes at the tee, illustrating mandos, OB, obstacles, and different lines.
The benches are incredible, as are the trashcans(wood built around cans using same wood as the benches -- padlocks on them too, very well done). Seems like they had some money to spend on the finer things for this course. The bridges are excellent, too.
Front nine sets you up for the back nine. You can get your muscle memory going on the front, then step it up on the tougher back 9. I love courses like this.
Park itself is well taken care of, and the playground is INCREDIBLE!
Only a few places to really lose a disc, not much OB that you couldn't find a disc after a little hunting. Pin for 14 is next to a deeper part of the creek, but it's usually clear to see to the bottom. Thunderstormed last night, and we could still see everything in the water.

Cons:

Front 9 is almost all straight. Not such a bad thing, as there are elevation changes and trees to make them a bit different, but still pretty straight.
Some poison ivy. Hey, it's the South, deal with it.
Par 4s could be long 3s. Nothing approaching a par 5.

Other Thoughts:

This course is just great, you will love all the amenities that make this more than just another disc golf outing. Concession stand, soda machines, even a water mister area in the playground to cool off with!
If there were a little more variety, this would be a 4 star. Well worth it if you're in Greenville. So many great courses nearby too. Hit this one and Timmons for a confidence-boosting day!

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Holes are well defined with placards showing basket locations and obstacles.
Tees are concrete and spacious, the wide angle at the back takes a little getting used to!
A couple of long par 4s which give me an opportunity to rip a throw without having a narrow path to navigate.

Cons:

Front 9 do get a little repetitious.
Managed to hit trees on what should've been open throwing areas! Oh wait, that's a con of my game, not the course!
Most of the holes are on dirt and could use some landscaping and grass seed! Limited access to the baseball field to retrieve your disc.

Other Thoughts:

I played terribly both times, but still enjoyed the course enough to go back for more! I also should specify that I mostly play on weekdays so I don't have problems with crowded parks and parking. Great all around park for the family with playgrounds that my son absolutely loves.

A Decade for a Century? 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 27, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The review is updated to reflect my second time playing the course, this time in January '21.
Century Park is a solid, enjoyable course. The front 9 more open, the back 9 is more wooded and challenging. As such, more of the memorable, distinct layouts are on the back nine.
- The course has several distinct aspects that create fun looks: railroad tracks and a creek.
- #4 plays parallel to the tracks. That's got to be a fun, albeit extremely loud, layout when a train rushes by. #3 & 11's baskets and #12's tee also play close to the tracks.
- The creek comes into play, to varying degrees, on holes #12, 13, 14, 16, and 17. It's at it's best on #13 & 14 as the creek runs along the left side of the fairway on both holes.
- #16 is a fun, short layout. It's only 175 feet, but you're throwing through some trees, over a boardwalk over the creek, to a basket alongside a short drop-off. Easy hole to throw multiple discs especially if you don't land as close as you expect with your first shot.
- #12 is probably the signature hole. A downhill, split fairway, 300-foot layout. You can take the direct line, which brings the trees into play, or the wider, out-right, line. The only risk of taking the direct line is if your disc fades left short of the basket, it can be a tricky second shot.
- This is a good course for beginners. It's not a long course, presents plenty of birdie chances.
- Course is easy to navigate. A big course map is at the kiosk by #1. Good tee signs, and great angled tee pads to accommodate all shots. There are also plenty of benches and trash cans throughout the course.
- Park has tremendous amenities. There a concession stand (it's not always open), drinking fountains, soda machines, restrooms. Park also has baseball fields (kept in great condition) and the largest playground I can remember for the kids. The whole family can enjoy the park while you're playing. You have to love small towns that have lots of money for their parks.

Cons:

- There are two obvious issues with the course, and both are centered around spacing.
- The front nine is very open, especially with a lack of separation between different holes. On almost every hole on the front side, an errant tee shot can land on a different hole's fairway. For example, #6's tee shot could easily sail onto #3 or 7's fairway. If you're playing when the course is crowded, you'll need to keep an eye out for others.
- The course intersects with other park activities throughout the round. How aggressive are you going to throw on #12 if there's a baseball game going on? What about on #18 if the playground/kids areas is crowded? What if people are just walking through the course, especially considering there is a large apartment complex next door?
- Course plays right up to the edges of the park. There's a fence alongside #2 & 3 blocking the back side of the apartment complex. There's a fence alongside #14 and #17. You may be jumping into or fishing a disc out of the creek. Don't let a disc get run over by a train on #5.
- There are a few too many simplistic holes on the front side. #1 & 2 can both play as simple dogleg lefts, at 264 and 258 feet respectively. #6 at 303 feet, and slightly downhill, also has that same dogleg left vibe. Then on the back side, the creek running along #13 & 14 means you're probably throwing the same shot.
- I wrote this in 2010 after my first time playing: The front 9 has been over-cleared of trees, rough, grass - pretty much everything. It's all dirt. The local message board mentioned the land was originally going to be used for a dog park instead of the front 9. Sounds about right. It really needs some trees, grass, rough to help with the aesthetics and challenge.** 2021 update: some trees are more mature. But, more are needed.
- When the weather is nice, and all the activities for kids, I have a sense the course gets way too crowded. There's an overflow parking lot on a side street, meaning it may be difficult to get in a round, without a lot of hustle and bustle.
- Quite a few holes were missing tee signs to the point I had to keep looking up distances on my phone. I hope when the park upgrades are complete, they remember to address the signs.

Other Thoughts:

It took more than a decade between the first and second times I played Century Park. The second time I played was considerably more enjoyable, and that's even with no #18, #14 being unplayable (but walkable), and #15 barely being playable (probably not recommended). The course had a better vibe the second go-round.
The course is almost 2 different layouts from the front 9 to the back. As soon as I got to #10, and away from the cleared out portion, it was night and day how much better the course got. You're also seeing green underfoot instead of red clay.
- Most of the course is played around/near other parts of the park. It's not until #13 that you start getting a sense of being away from everything else, and get a sense of nature.
- My favorite hole is #12. It's a 390-foot downhill hole, with split fairways, and a big hill on the side. The right fairway comes close to the baseball field, so be cautious if there's a game taking place.
- In '21, several holes on the front caught my eye as being enjoyable. #3 is the course's longest layout at 410 feet. It's an uphill semi-open layout to a basket tucked along the edge of a tree line and railroad track. Nice multi-shot hole. I also enjoyed #5, especially the quality look from the tee pad.
- When I first played in 2010, this course felt off the beaten path. When you now have a large, three-story apartment complex next door, you now have a different look. Based on the observation of one person, be aware of people who use the course as a walking trail for their dogs.
- As mentioned, the park has something for everyone. To the course designer's credit, they used every square inch of the park to install a nice 18-hole layout. But, with so many park activities crammed into this space, that does take away from the disc golf experience.
- In 2021, I liked this course much more than I did in '10. I do attribute that to a little more tree growth on the front side offering a little more challenge, variety, and separation. More is still needed however. Let's hope the course continues getting its due attention.
- I upped my rating after my follow-up visit. I gave it a 3.0 rating, thinking it would be closer to a 3.25. With so many other excellent courses in the Upstate, don't overlook this layout.

Nice family friendly park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 18, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multipe tee pads 1 cement, 2 gravel.
Course was family friendly but still offered challenge to amatuer level players (if played at all par 3). Course had good flow and navigation was easy. There was a large map at hole 1 also.
Holes varied in distance, several featured slight elevation changes and just enough water to cause a penalty, but never lose your disc. Risk of disc loss is minimal.
Vending machine, water fountain, and bathrooms available at the large children's park. Concession stand near the parking lot.
Course had excellent signage.
Several unique holes made the most of the limited space.
First 9 are very short, back 9 are more challenging.

Cons:

It's a pretty short course average distance is around 275 ft.
Hole 17 throws towards a main road, but it is a minimal safety concern

Other Thoughts:

This course was built to entertain the widest range of players from elementary school children to experienced players.
several of the first holes taunt you with a possible ace attempt. Holes 10 and 11 are challenging, with 11 being a memorable downhill tunnel shot with the basket being back up another hill. Hole 14 had featured a double mando where you had to throw between the arrows, but avoid the small amount of water. Hole 17 was interesting with OB on 3 sides. Course never got monotonous and featured a lot of variety in limited space, over all a good design.
This course is lightly wooded with some water hazards, but the water is clear and shallow. Course was enjoyed by everyone in my party from the 8 year old to the 55 year old.

Pros:

Nice little park with big playground and facilities for the family. Nice, big concrete tee pads on all holes. Good signs for each hole, and easy navigation. Very few opportunites to lose plastic. Good place for beginners and less than advanced players to learn the game. Mature trees provide the hazards, but almost all the brush and undergrowth has been cleared.

Cons:

Many holes that are straight shots with a few obstacles. Very repetitive. Not many fairways that make you create a line to the basket. Course should be very easy for advanced players with big arms. Most holes range from 200-300'. First 10 holes are pretty dull.

Other Thoughts:

A lot of work has been done, and this course is a great place for new players, or players that want to work on a certain part of their game without a lot of frustration. Holes 12 and 14-17 are the holes that have some real character. 12 is a long down hill with a narrow gap between two sets of trees. Baseball field on right could cause risk for those that try to go around trees. Double mando on 14 with a creek on th eleft. 15 is long and straight, but the basket is on a small hill that will create rolls on your approaches and putts. 16 is a nice short ACE run, but has a small creek and some tress guarding the basket. 17 is long and straight, but has an OB fence on left and an OB road on the right.

Road Trip Perfection 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 5, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- This is the kind of course you want to get out of your car and play when you're on a road trip. Beautiful, challenging holes... not too long, not too short, not too open, not too tight - perfect. Almost all the holes are between 220-340' (with some hovering at 200 and others hovering at 400) and either require some sort of gap to hit, a mandy to be made, or OB to avoid... or all three. Fun times.
- Beautiful tee-pads... nice and long concrete pads with wider bases than fronts. Gives you the ability to really shape your run-up.
- Nice signage, benches, baskets, trashcans, park setting, etc... Just really nice.
- Some of the holes are gems... 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 17. With hole 12 being a world class golf hole.
- Great use of the limited elevation available.
- Although there was great signage and a good map... they were un-needed. The course had great flow.

Cons:

- None really... I can nit-pick though.
- Some trash laying around the course.
- I would say most of the holes are straight... some require shaping, but nonetheless straight. There were no real serious doglegs.

Other Thoughts:

- Like I said before... if you're on a road trip this is the type of course you want to play. Definitely better than the other 3 courses I played in the Greenville area.
- As mentioned by the ValkKid... the Par 4's are really 3's... they're just not quite long enough to be 4's, although (I would imagine) rarely 2'd.
- This course has low numbers to be shot... but, you'll have to shoot well, nothing is given to you freely. Only good/great shots (depending on the hole) will yield realistic birdie opportunities.
- My Score: -9

Raw But Nice And Will Be Better With Time! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I can see this course is still in the develomental stage. It's in a multi-use park with ballfields, kids tot lot, little snack shop, etc. Very nice informative tee signs on thick (12" X 12") poles low to the ground. If the sign is damaged, it will be easy to replace it with another laminated one. The teepads were fine and there were a few next tee signs, also. Navigation was pretty smooth. There were a lot of interesting, fun holes on this course. # 6, I think, is a long straight downhill shot where you really would like to carry your tee shot across a fairly, deep creek before pitching up to the basket which is up the hill ahead. To me, the signature hole on the course is # 16. It's looks like a simple little ACE run, maybe 200 ft. But the basket is guarded by a creek with steep banks on two sides. It's a very birdable hole but one that probably ends up yielding quite a few bogies, as well.

Cons:

The earth on the front seems raw, as if it's just been scraped by a dozer or something. Also, the entire front nine is littered with small branches. I'm sure the locals are working on cleaning these up.

Other Thoughts:

There are a couple of holes listed as par 4's which are probably closer to 3's or maybe 3.5's. Two holes ( # 13 and # 14) play up and down a creek giving you the lost disc in the water experience. The second of these has the basket set fairly close to the creek so you have to be extra careful of your approach. I liked this course, enjoyed playing it. Thought it was fair and had some very well thought out holes. Try it! You'll like it, I'm sure. Nice course design work by whoever designed it.
