Circle this one on your Texas itinerary!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 7, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Circle C is located on the southwestern edge of the Austin, TX metro area. The course plays around the edges of a large multi-use park, and does a good job keeping away from other park activities.

There is a really nice mixture of holes here. Most of the fairways are relatively wide by my Michigan-based standards, but still narrow enough that you'll need to think about shot shaping. There is usually thick rough on both sides as well. Some of the holes in the back of the course are more tightly wooded, and a few play over large sections of exposed rock which was interesting. You'll need to throw a healthy variety of shots successfully to score well here.

My favorite holes here were two of the tighter ones in the back section. Hole 9 plays only 202', but up a tight, straight path on a relatively steep, rocky hillside. Right after that, hole 10 plays 260' back down a different section of the same hill. There's a low ceiling here, creating the need for a precise shot off the tee. I also enjoyed the finishing hole 18, which is a huge sweeping 850' dogleg left with a small creek (dried up when I visited) crossing the fairway on the approach to the basket. Even with the creek dried up, this was a fun and memorable way to end the round.

There are two layouts here. I enjoyed the shorter Red layout, which still plays at a level that experienced rec to intermediate level players will enjoy. The longer Blue layout appeared to mainly add a bit more length to some holes, and/or add more obstructions off the tees. Most holes have two concrete tee pads, with the remaining ones having a single pad for both layouts. Tee signs appear at each pad. The ones at the long pads have both distances listed, and the ones at the short pads only have the short distances. Regardless of layout, there is a nice mix of distances ranging from 200'ish up to the 850' mentioned previously. Bigger arms will have plenty of chances to air it out, and noodle arms like me will still have some birdie opportunities on the shorter holes.

The baskets are yellow banded DISCatchers. They are on the older side, but in fine shape. One pin position per hole.

Navigation is passable here, thanks to arrows on the previous tee signs plus tape on most basket rungs.

There are three practice baskets near the beginning of the course, and a kiosk with course map is also nearby. There is a restroom at the closest parking lot to hole 1.

I appreciated the large concrete slab "benches" at every long tee. There are 4-5 trash cans spaced out periodically around the course. The part that stood out though, was that at each hole that DIDN'T have a trash can there is a sign indicating which hole the next one is located at. I think the trash cans here are signed better than at any other course I have played!

Cons:

Other than the couple of holes mentioned above, there are only small elevation changes here. Not really enough to affect play.

It's easy to forget that this is a multi-use park for much of the round, but there are a few holes where walking paths could conceivably come into play. The park drive is also within firing range on the final hole if you really overthrow the dogleg. Definitely not major issues, but worth mentioning.

The one navigational feature that is definitely missing is signs directing players from the parking lot to the start of hole 1. I would never have found the beginning of the course without a map. The route from basket 18 back to the lot could arguably use a couple of arrows as well.

Other Thoughts:

This was my first course played in the state of Texas, which was my 17th state played overall. We were in town for the solar eclipse, and due to some severe weather after the eclipse this ended up being my only round for the trip.

Circle C was a great introduction to Texas disc golf. I debated between 4.0 and 4.5 rating here and ultimately decided to go with a strong 4.0. There was not enough "wow" factor here for me to consider a 5.0. This course is definitely worth checking out if you are anywhere near the Austin area!

Definitely Excellent 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 20, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

A well-stocked, advanced-level course with everything you want for a hometown challenge.

-Amenities: Two concrete tees per hole, faded DISCatchers, tee signage (I think a sign at every single tee), practice baskets, driving range.

-Navigation: Basically flawless. Though there isn't next tee signage, the paths are clearly trampled down/carved out.

-Multi-Tees: The two sets of tees should offer different challenge. I played the longs and they are advanced-level, but I think the shorts would be lower intermediate difficulty.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Circle C is extremely solid, bordering on top-notch. Excellent diversity of hole lengths, left and right plays, and alternation of more open holes with gap-hitting and tunnel holes. Parts of Circle C have championship vibes with long par-4s and 5s requiring precision, but other parts feel very down-to-earth and local, with some ace runs and plenty of shots under 300'. That variety of feels makes it pleasant for a lower-level amateur to play.

Generally, the plays are pretty basic but solid. A straight shot with a hill, or a right-turning technical fairway, or a two-shot par-4 that runs straight to left. However, some holes out here are notably imaginative. (1) is a great opener where you have plenty of fairway to work with, but a left-leaking drive gives you a tough upshot to the low-ceiling green. (12) long is super cool downhill shot that will require you to throw over a bunch of trees to get to the fairway. (18) is probably the most iconic, a 3-shot hole in the shape of a U with a tunnel to start and a tunnel to end.

-Challenge: It may not be quite pro-level, but Circle C should have enough to challenge almost any player to develop their game. The distance is substantial but accuracy and touch are also musts.

Cons:

Few and far between.

-Elevation: Holds Circle C back a bit. There are a couple of up and down plays, with slight fairway undulations, but generally it's quite flat. I find myself comparing it to WilCo, whose flat-as-a-pancake plot of land really stopped it from being excellent in my book.

-Park Plays: Some holes are ho-hum park shots. The number of open par-4s and simple par-3s keeps me from including Circle C in my upper echelon of courses.

-Signage: Multiple tee signs were missing during my play-through. It was a notable omission that made things harder.

Other Thoughts:

Circle C is an Excellent course. It reminds me of city-anchoring courses like Perkerson in Atlanta or Cedar Hill in Nashville. Although some holes are simply wonderful, I find a lot of others to be at a solid 3.0 level, so as a whole I wouldn't consider it a regional destination. Among Austin courses, I have it just slightly behind East Metro and Old Settlers'. It's a fantastic round of disc golf that anybody with a bit of experience will enjoy.

Excellent Advanced Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 20, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

* Awesome hole variety, almost every hole is wooded but their designs are very different from each other
** Some holes start open and end under a canopy
** Lots of holes have tree obstacles you have to play around
** Hole 18 has an awesome ditch that is just fun to throw over
* Two practice baskets with astroturf green circles
* Pro and rec concrete tees with signs
* Plenty of parking
* Restrooms near parking lot
* Despite this being a multi-use park, and a trail running along the course, it's very easy to avoid pedestrians

Cons:

* Course navigation isn't very good, there's navigation on the tee signs but with the holes being so large it's very easy to forget where the next hole is
* Getting to the course for the first time can be tricky since there's no obvious sign for the course
* The course ends with a small walk to the parking lot

Other Thoughts:

* This course is huge, long, hilly, and rocky
* I cannot recommend bringing a cart to this course
* Bring lots of water, this course will make you thirsty

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Lots of shot variety, long holes, short holes, difficult hyzer shots, short wooded shots, uphills with low ceilings, downhills with low ceilings ... it's got it all.

Most of the course is well shaded and protected, so whether it's hot Texas summer or windy fall, it's not so bad at Circle C.

Cons:

Tons of sharp & slippery limestone ... successful skip shots here are few and far between. The terrain is well known for munching discs and halting them dead in their tracks. When it's wet out, the rocks are REAL slippery.

Pros:

This course is very fun. There are shorter and longer holes and some very fun elevation changes. The tee-pads are in good condition, and the benches are huge 2 ton blocks of stone, se they can't be vandalized.

Cons:

The Jack*sses who got foiled by not being able to vandalize the benches took out there frustrations on the signage. The bushes are rough on the skin, they tore me up. There was no next tee box signage other than on the tee-signs that survived the vandal onslaught.

Other Thoughts:

Worth the drive 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 23, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a challenging course for experienced golfers. The scenery is beautiful, and the course rewards you for staying on the fairway. I haven't played many Austin courses, but the locals consider this one of the best in town. There is a wide array of tee shots, and the course is easy to navigate.

Cons:

There are a lot of holes that are reachable with a putter, and there are a handful of "bomber" holes... There aren't many 350-ish holes where a well-placed fairway driver rewards you with a drop-in birdie (which is my favorite type of hole). I feel like I threw either putters or distance drivers here, not too many midranges or fairway drivers.

Other Thoughts:

Don't bring a beginner here for his/her first round. Do bring water! You'll do a bit more walking/hiking here compared to most courses.

The 18th hole is super long challenging, and a difficult par 5. If you need a birdie on 18 to beat your buddies (or set a personal best), you'll need 4 perfect shots. It's probably a little easier to make up a throw by being aggressive on 17.

Does it get much better? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 11, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful course for intermediate to expert players. Pro distance and amateur tee boxes that are well maintained. Nice variety of shots with 6 par 4s and 2 par 5s. You will use every disc in your bag on a typical day here.

Cons:

Some of the tee signs are missing and navigating the course the first few times can be confusing on certain holes. The yelling of soccer matches can be a bit of a distraction. Easy to turn an ankle here due to the many loose rocks that make up much of the terrain (especially when looking around for your disc).

Other Thoughts:

The course seems to progressively get more difficult as it goes. The pinnacle of this difficulty is the super long horseshoe shaped 18th hole that will make or break your round (I'm happy when I par it).

Stand out holes are: Hole 1 - nice par 4 that is easy to birdie with good disc placement. Hole 5 - big par 5 with a dog leg to the right and elevated green. Hole 6 - par 4 with a really tough tee shot through a thick grove of trees. Hole 9 - a tremendous uphill shot through a narrow tunnel of trees. Hole 12 - long par 4 with a huge tree in the fairway.

Bring water and "A" game 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 14, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Update (3/16/2015): Course is in great condition for the spring. Only a couple of muddy spots on the trail that are easy to avoid. The water is running in the creek making it a beautiful place to play. Thanks to the nice weather the course traffic has increased. Have fun :) (Older post that's still relevant): Lived in Circle C Ranch for years so this is the course I've grown up on. This course taught me how to play. The shot selections are critical and good judgement with high accuracy are key. This course can eat your lunch on some holes so stay focused. Detailed tee markers and dual tees are great. Trash cans at most holes or at least every other hole. Two warm-up putting areas before hole one is a nice touch especially with wide open soccer fields right next to them so you can warm up your drives as well. Distance varies from shorter, accuracy minded holes to long "grip it and rip it" par 4's and 5's. If you're doing well out here chances are you're ready for any course around. They have continued to maintain this course consistently over the last 15 years. That is a real commitment and the course shows it. If you're up for a challenging trek through the rocky wooded hills and the long semi-open (hot) fields then this is a course worth trying. As stated, hole 18 is a great way to end a round. Super challenging and super creative. Whomever put together this hole deserves a pat on the back. Now go play this course already!!

Cons:

Update (3/16/2015): This course still needs a couple of standalone directional markings to assist in trail identification. Had to help a few groups navigate the transitions between a couple of different holes. Not their fault. Deer trails and natural water run off areas look like paths to follow. Also wanted to mention the addition of an extra trash can or two would be greatly appreciated. (Older post that's still relevant): Texas heat will take it's toll on you so bring water. There is a lot of rocky hiking through the front 9. As stated, a couple of spots can cause you to get disoriented when trying to find the next hole but just follow your instincts and you'll get there. Otherwise was great.

Other Thoughts:

Play this course. It's worth your time and effort. Warm up at the beautiful soccer fields and nice putting area under the oak trees. Bring plenty of water and stable shoes. Have fun with the short hole, long hole, short hole flip flopping. Keeps you're arm from being blown out in 4 long holes in a row. Can't wait for you to see the final approach to 18. So cool.

Best in Central Texas 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 1, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is truly an amazing course - on the Pro/Advanced level of difficulty, this course will test all your shots and your will. Short and Long concrete tee boxes offer players of all skill levels an opportunity to compete. There are tee signs on every hole/tee. If you are looking for a challenge, you are at the right course. Stay in the fairway and you will be well on your way to a great time in ATX. This is one of the most challenging courses in Central Texas, next to Manor of course...

Cons:

You may not want to throw your favorite plastic on this course. The rocky ground almost guarantees some level of carnage, so choose your shots wisely. Straying from the fairway will punish even the most adept players. My only real problem is the abusive amount of jagged rock, but that is just the terrain for ya.

Other Thoughts:

Although it may be futile, everytime I play this course I kick or throw as many rocks as possible to the edge of the fairway. This course would get 5 stars for the quality of Tee Boxes, Signage, and Playability of the Course, however, the rocky fairways eat plastic and the course is not always maintained.

Fantastic Variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 27, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Dual tee pads is a big plus and in most cases the play from the longer offered a much different look with added trees of other obstacles.

18 was a really fun hole. Its 1000 feet of left hand turn that ends into another set of challenges. Its unique and a good marque hole.

Overall the course offers a lot of different challenges and the local woods were in good shape. The course hole maps were all in pretty good shape and helpful for the first round through.

The course has a lot of throw variety and requires a lot of different throws.

Cons:

While each holes offers a different look and play, really they all look the same. The course plays through some moderate woods and really doesn't come out. The view and play by connection really feels redundant after a while.

Other Thoughts:

Overall if you can keep it in the fairways and out of the trees its a pretty straight forward course. Being said, doing that was pretty challenging on many holes. The challenge in the hole to hole play made the course a great play throughout.

It was a fun course but no real visual variety from hole to hole. It was a fun course I'll definitely play again when in the area.

This course plays as one of the best in Austin but certainly is not one of the best in the country.

One of the Best in Austin 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The best thing about this course is the variety of the holes. Even though the course play fairly long from the short tees, it really doesn't feel like that long after playing from the long tees. There's a distinct difference to the feel of the course from short and long tees. I think it's a strength of this course.

The navigation is, for the most part, pretty good except for couple of spots where it may get a bit confusing. There's garbage cans being available at certain holes, which will help you if you need to dispose of whatever.

The shot selections required for this course are broad. Many players would be well-suited if they are capable of throwing forehand, backhand, and maybe even overhand throws. On some of the holes, some strategy planning will be required to achieve par or better. It makes the game more interesting.

Cons:

There's not that many drawbacks to this course, considering how it's being laid out, and the natural features of the landscape.

Some people may bemoan lack of water hazards, but sometimes it's unavoidable because of the natural order of things here in Central Texas.

While I have lauded the navigation, I will concede that on at least couple of holes, the navigation may be a bit confusing.

Other Thoughts:

I'm torn between giving this course 4 and 4.5. I settled on 4, because I think it's only fair to be a tough "grader" until I have played other courses that are consistently rated at 4.5 or higher, so I can at least attempt to be more well-rounded in my reviews.

Who is this course catered toward to? I think, for most part, virtually everyone can enjoy this course. The very new players will be frustrated at the length of some holes, but the more advanced players will absolutely love the option of playing from the long tees.

The fun factor for this course is definitely high. When compared to other courses in Austin, I would think this course rank #1 in terms of playability for all skill levels.

Pros:

Another awesome reason why Im so jealous of all the Austin golfers!! The shot selection here is great again and shows where this game needs to go to keep up with disc improvements. You have to be able to throw to A to get to B, and sometimes C. Two tee pads on every hole makes even the newcomers not feel overwhelmed with the difficulty here. The elevation and natural obstacles are present again not only on the greens but also many of the fairways and tees. The tee signs are great and help the guys never here navigate the course along with the worn trails. You will need all your shots and you will need to be throwing them well or you can get in trouble and can make for a long round. Plenty of shade helps the long round. Discatchers are always a bonus in my book and they are present here. The mulch is nice and helps with some of the soggy areas too. The fun factor alone was very high here which always helps.

Cons:

Some of the baskets have tons of rusty chains. Almost all of them are higher then usually making the short game interesting. It's the hill country so there are lots of rocks and things so watch out if you have weak ankles/knees. Rough can get thick....stay in the fairway;). People swimming in the creek 18 and after about 3 times of telling them to look out, and getting the "F" you response, you may just have to throw on em. Nobody was there when we got there but by the time we left it was packed, so Im sure it can get crowded which would make for a super long round.

Other Thoughts:

As said before, the fun factor is high, combine that with the awesome scenery and great golf, it is another stop for sure if your in the area!

Great shots available for all throwers. Plenty of distance required to achieve birdies. Great use of the landscape. Get ready to get technical. If you stay in the fairway, par should be attainable. Veering to either side of the fairway will result in bogey golf almost every time.

Cons:

Some of the tee signs show a slightly different layout than the actual course."#3" Slow play on some days. Huge groups are often seen playing casually . It makes for a long round. The height of many of the targets seems too high. Hole 15 seemed to be at a more standard height.

Other Thoughts:

Great to play in the winter. I think it will be more difficult to play in the spring and summer due to the growth of the trees and shrubs. Beware of the woods, sharp branches will cut you up if you find yourself searching for your disc. Great course for the true disc golfer.

This is a great course. Tee signs are great. Plenty of benches, trash cans, shady spots, etc. Alt tee pads on many holes. Nice development of the cuorse with walkways, bordering on paths and terrain support. many good options for shot selection. many different shots for a variety of disc applications. Course is generally trash free, kudos to the locals for maintaining and respecting this fine course.

Cons:

Tee signs indicate next tee locations, but if you forget to look some transitions are tricky (remember to look). Some paths to the next tee are long 'nuf to be holes themselves. Some tee pads are a bit short for the hole lengths. I did not see spots for alt basket placements... but they might be here and I missed them.

Other Thoughts:

I only played the front 9 as I was off to the airport and short on time, but walked the back 9 to the start/car. Overall a great course. Lacks a signature hole of some kind as a distinction, althought one of them (maybe 6) is a hard 90 deg. dog leg left that is sure to reslut in blown par. A few holes have interesting basket placements where a wayward putt will result in a second putt of greater distance than the first... Putt carefully... Use the practice baskets at the start (complete with fake turf) to sharpen up on your short game. Summer is hot. Bring water. This is both a disc golf course as well as a mid level hike. Wear the right shoes... plain tennies are not enough for the terrain.

Pros:

Practice Baskets. Two baskets offer a variety of practice opportunities.

Tees. Concrete tee pads, dual options on most holes are all in great shape. Multiple locations not only offer length options, but several change the lines quite well.

Challenge/Variety of Holes. Each hole was a new adventure, I found myself walking the length of each hole to check out lines and landing areas to plan my shot, each hole required a variety of shots and line shaping skills.

Beautiful. The landscape is incredible, it's not only a disc golf experience but a hike through the "wilderness." Amazing enough to find an area like this so close to the city, but to have a great disc golf course in the middle of it - I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here.

Amenities. Located in a sports complex of a park, bathrooms are available at the beginning. Trash cans can be found on several holes.

Cons:

Vandalism. Yeah, I noticed the graffiti and various broken tee signs, didn't detract from the overall experience, but it's sad to see such a lack of respect for such a beautiful area.

Though the tees themselves are level, the area around doesn't offer a runup for those that like 10 feet behind the tee.

Not for Beginners. For one, it is very challenging and would have frustrated me terribly as a beginner. If I survived that and still kept playing, I'd be let down by any other course that I played afterward in this area.

Wood Chips. I don't know why shredded wood is so popular in this area, but it is very difficult to skip, and it makes footing challenging in areas.

Crowded. This course is popular for a reason, and everybody knows it - there may be a wait on weekends or in the afternoons.

Other Thoughts:

Bring water, it will be hot out there, and it is a hike - take your time and enjoy this beauty of a course. Well worth the stop, if in Austin make this course a priority.

A true testament to a course is for an "out of Towner" to show up and enjoy themselves, on the course. This is what I did, I drove 60 miles showed up with no course map or score card. This course is so easy to follow it's unbelievable, great signage and very easy trails to follow. I loved the use of rocks to make drainage paths, and the lined trails. This disc golf course is great; I really enjoyed the elevation change, and the use of wood chops in the landing area in the fairway, and around some of the baskets. The approach shot on 18 is something to behold, an up hill shot across the creek, to an elevated basket.

Cons:

On 18 the before mention creek must be crossed by "tight rope walking" across a log that has been laid in the creek. Leaving the 12th basket the path crosses the creek, but on this day the creek was five ft. deep, and 20 ft wide. It took me about five minutes to walk around this flooded creek. Not all baskets are regulation in height

Other Thoughts:

A lot of work has gone into this course, and the locals should be proud of what they have. I enjoyed playing circle c. It was worth the drive.

The new tee boxes are fantastic. The Am tees are challenging but not frustrating. The added markings for trails is a plus. The clearing of foliage helps a ton. Once the tee signs are in, it will be even better.

Overall, the best parts of this course are:
* shot variety throughout the course
* long and challenging holes: 5,18
* great hole (re)design: 14, 16

Cons:

Saturday mornings are extremely crowded with soccer games on the adjacent fields. The course can be crowded which can cause a round to take up to 3 hours. It is long, and some old-schoolers expressed distaste at the large pars counts (two 5s, many 4s)

Other Thoughts:

New or changed holes.....
* 11: Redesigned from the original hole 12. The Am tee is longer than it used to be. Good hole with some length to it.
* 12: Redesigned from the original hole 14. The Pro tee is still on the hill (thank goodness), but the Am tee is no farther away.
* 13: Brand new hole, ace-able look at the basket from pro tee. Nice placement of a par 3 in between a couple of par 4's.
* 14: Formerly hole 16. The only real changes are that some of the overgrowth is gone, so there is this real sweet look at the basket from the Pro tee.
* 16: Resigned with portions of the former hole 18 and 19 to make this one. Long open fairway, with the basket behind a line of trees. Many lines available and a good addition to the course.
* 17: Redesigned from former hole 20. I loved home 20 for its ace-ability (or bird-ability in my case), but no the basket is tucked onto a green that is further left. Overshoot the basket and you go off of a small ledge for a tougher putt than before.

Holes removed (by former hole numbers): 7, 13, 15, 19.
