Nice winter course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Winter play- I think this is good winter course. I hate using ribbons on my discs, but with all the baskets visible from the tees, you should be able to track your disc all the way without one.
Navigation- Tee signs were simple, but got the job done and the distance seemed to be accurate.
Location- It was nice to be able to park, walk 10 feet to the first tee pad and start.
Fun- Hey, sometimes it's just fun to play a short course and have a chance at an ace on every hole.
Tee pads- They were covered in snow, but I found each one fine and they did the trick for me.

Cons:

Even though I liked the aspect of being able to see the baskets from the tees for my winter round, some of them were still too short.
The baskets are starting to show their age. My putts stayed in the basket just fine, but I'm not sure how much longer they can last. Most are not straight either.

Other Thoughts:

I was the first person to walk through what seemed to be at least six inches of snow. If you are looking for somewhere to throw in the winter and don't want to trek through the snow on a long course, play here instead.
This is a very cool piece of property, I look forward to seeing it in the winter.

It is what it is- don't expect the world's greatest course, just come and have fun.

Well Maintained Little Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 25, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

It is neat to see how someone can put a course into such a small area. If you work close or go to school at Oakland U, this is very convenient.
It sure is nice to be able to bring very young kids and have them over-drive the hole. You really don't need much more than mid-range and putters so it makes your bag very light.

Tee-signs are very informative as well, with par, distance, hole layout and are all in good shape.

Aesthetically this is a nice looking course, with the pond at the far end.

Cons:

There is so little challenge, and the tee-pads aren't great but do you even need them?
Because this is so compact, if there is 2 other holes in use, there is a high likelihood of getting an errand disc your way.

Other Thoughts:

It doesn't seem as though a lot of thought went into the design except to fit 9 holes in here, which is nice, everyone needs another disc golf course, Free Disc Golf Course.
But a little elevation change, or using the water or something. This is pretty close to our home, and still only hit this once. Its not horrible, but you can hit all 9 holes in like 15 minutes if there isn't other players. Too consistent probably due to budget and size constraints. Worth a looksie at least once if you are close, it only takes 15 minutes and a putter, its sure to put a smile on your face, disc golf always does.

Small, yet Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a well-designed 9-hole course with excellent baskets, good signs, and easy flow and navigation. The holes are extremely short, but they are not boring. Many of the baskets are well-placed and driving past the basket might cost you your birdie. This course would be great for younger kids to play and also introducing people to the game. This course is an ace race course for experienced disc golfers which can be super fun if you come here with the proper expectations. Scores in the teens are possible.

You can play the course easily with one disc, a putter is recommended. You can also play a round or two in no time at all. The area is also very nice and safe. There is a good chance that other park users will stop for a minute and watch you throw (then you can impress them by hitting chains on #1 like ZMan44 did!)

Cons:

The woodchip-filled tee boxes are obviously not ideal and it does not stay in the wood frames, but a run up is not really necessary as most holes are reachable with a putter.

The total disc golf area is very small and would become quite crowded if lots of people were playing.

Other Thoughts:

We played this course only because it was close to our hotel as we were making our way to Flip City. It turned out to be one of the most memorable and fun times we have ever had on a disc golf course. It was like mini-golf. We had several good laughs and played the course several times that day.

Awesome Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

If this course wasn't so short, it would have gotten a much better grade. The baskets are in good condition. Course flow is simple as it is all located in one small area. The park is pristine. The police are about 100 yards away so it is a safe environment.

Those are the typical things I look for when I review a course. However, Civic Center's best selling point is that it is a blast to play.

Cons:

The biggest cons are obvious to anyone who has played the course. It is very short...many holes are under 100 feet. The area is a very small, so I would imagine that if there are multiple groups playing that the odds of getting hit with an errant disc are higher than on a typical course. I don't really care for mulch tee pads, but they aren't so bad given the style of the course.

Other Thoughts:

Is this course going to challenge you? Nope. Is this course going to make you plan out your next shot before teeing off? Nope. But there is just something about this course. My friends and I were in Michigan on a disc golf excursion and our hotel happened to be about a mile away. We decided to give it a shot even though we had read the specs on the course from the site. We played it 8 times. I played with a Wasp and a Wizard...and teed off with the Wizard on all holes except for #7. Your score should be 18 (or lower) when you leave, but we decided not to play it that way. We made up a game where an Ace was worth 5 points, chains were worth 2 points, basket and pole were worth 1 point....and it was a blast!

This is the most perfect place I have ever seen to introduce young children to the game. My 7 year old daughter would love it. It is in a nice park, very safe, and very casual.

I think every city should have a course like this. Ace run after ace run. It is the kind of course that if you asked another player about you would get some grumbling about it being mini-golf and not challenging anyone...yada yada. But then you would see that same guy out there just before dark getting some putting practice and going for aces with no one else around. As a moderately skilled disc golfer, I am not ashamed to say I loved it for what it was.

In conclusion, if I lived in this area and had about 2 weeks of time off...I would get out the video camera and pass Cubby!

Huge Short Game Improvement 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Awesome for improving short game
Nice Scenery, no trash, no places to lose discs
Only a midrange and putter needed

Cons:

It is a short 9 hole, but really good if you want to improve your short game
Woodchip tees could cause you harm if you had to chuck it, but short hole lengths make it so you dont have to

Other Thoughts:

I saw a huge improvement on my short game after playing here everyday after school. Good practice course when i was waiting for kids to go throw Riverbends or Firefighters.
Police like to travel by often, but won't bother you unless you're up to something other than discing.
Its fun to get Aces once in a while here and its pretty easy to.

Civic Center 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 21, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Small quick course. Nice area to walk around. Good if you don't have a lot of time but want to get some links in.

Cons:

Hole distances are way too short for anyone with a sweet drive. My forehand drive overshoots almost every basket on the first throw unless I'm careful.

Other Thoughts:

Difficult to find second hole after playing the first. Needs more defined path.

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

A very quick play, good for lunch breaks and busy days.
A generally fun course.

Cons:

Very short, majority of holes are straight line from tee to pin.
If more than a few groups are playing at once, course will feel very crowded.

Other Thoughts:

Very much a putt putt golf course for frisbee golfers. It is a great place to work on the approach and putting.

Putt-Putt 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 20, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

--Nice quiet park, even in a heavily populated area. Even though theres alot of other activities in the main park, this small course dosnt get played alot. Very good maintenance, no trash or vandalism anywhere to be seen. Baskets are in decent shape too (hole 8 was recently replaced with a new basket). There's good signs, you will not get lost! The only "iffy" spot is after hole #1, you turn right and walk through the small patch of woods to get to hole #2.

Cons:

--The biggest con is only having 9 holes. Besides that the wood chips tees can mess up your footing, hole #7 is the only hole it really affects you on though.

--Also alot of people will think there's no challenge here but it's for begginers and people who want to work on their short game.

Other Thoughts:

--They use their small chunk of land as good as they can but its mainly open throws with a couple random trees, and ace runs on every hole. There is always a chance for a "perfect game" here!

Access to course--
On University dr., use last entrance on the right before squirel rd.

--Once inside, go straight untill you come to tennis courts, then turn left, pass the tennis courts and turn right at the next road, park in the circle parking lot by the white building.

{Note}- Police station in front of park, and sometimes 5-0 rides around on mountain bikes. They never hassle you, but they might stop and watch you throw on a couple holes.
