The Woods Of Wisconsin

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.607 Rating) A heavily wooded shot shaping course needing more time to beat in.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I would define the landscape here as rugged raw decadence. There's a lot of flavor packed into this small parcel and I was digging the charm it was dishing out. Clayton Park is generally flat and there is no water, but there are hardly any bland shots. Hole (14) to me, was the only snoozer. I found the attractiveness of the woods to be the course's strongest attribute. I scored the beauty aspect at 70 percentile.
- HOLE VARIETY - 14 holes I would define as heavily wooded. Some are short, some are jump putts, some play left, some play right, some play straight. Some even play around improv dead branch wooden fortresses. There are two holes that start open and finish into a pocket and one that starts wooded and ends in the open. I realize that the course leans heavily on the woods aspect, but it felt like it was switched up well enough to not feel copy-cat.
- BASIC AMENITIES - MachVIIs are awesome. They look and catch great. The tees are ok, being a wood framed box with crusher run gravel dumped in. I didn't have any issues, other than I thought they were on the smallish side. The signage is basic, but works for the course's young age. They'll need to upgrade this when funds become available. The park also has restrooms and shelters. It would be nice if they started adding a few seating areas.
- QUICK PLAY - Despite the jungle like conditions here, I got in and out in 45 minutes. Many of the holes are so short that even a bad ricochet will be found as it likely didn't have to go far with only 150 foot power being applied. Winter rounds are likely even quicker.

Cons:

Short and weird lines
- NOT BOMBER FRIENDLY - Players that enjoy air mailing it past their friends will come here once, and then never show up again. Only one open hole and three half open holes by my count. Having big distance is probably going to be a handicap. Several lines felt tighter than 6 feet wide well down fairway. In my 630 course played portfolio, less than 5 percent are more wooded than this course.
- OVERGROWTH - I probably played during peak overgrowth, July, and it was pretty wild in spots. Players that are mama's boys are going to complain and likely wuss out before the round is over. Considering the constricted fairway lines, I don't see how anyone throwing it doesn't end up well in it a few times. I personally liked the rawness, but I know players that wouldn't. Likely filled to the brim with mosquitoes, spiders and ticks at times. I'm glad I deeted up.
- SIGNAGE AND NAVIGATION - I forgave some of this as the course was new when I threw it. If the signage hasn't been upgraded yet, players can expect very limited offerings in this category. It was just a number at the tees and a couple were missing. There are some well-placed navigational cues, but it appears some may have been swallowed up by the encroaching overgrowth or have been kicked over. Many transitions are intuitive, but a couple are not.

Other Thoughts:

This course is going to have some vast opinions due to the wooded nature of it. Players that like short heavily wooded courses will love it, while those that prefer namby pamby open gameplay will hate it. I liked it for what it was, but thought that a few too many fairways were boarder-line between fair and poke and hope. Overall, a strong 2.5 level course to me, with likely enough growth potential to reach a high 3.0 on my ledger. The gameplay reminded me of courses like WARP in Waupun WI, Overly Worman in Indianapolis, Creek Ridge in northern Indiana, Robertsdale Links in southern Alabama, Whispering Pines in Central Florida and Mountain View in South Carolina.

Pros:

Clayton Park DGC is a great little woods course. There's only three holes on the whole course that play out in the open. And two of those three at least have the pin tucked into the woodline. You could get away with just throwing putters here and still shoot well under par.

The baskets are brand new DGA Mach VII's. These are excellent baskets. They catch great and pop out pretty well in the shadows of the woods with the orange inner top band. All were mounted nice and level too. One pin position per hole.

The tee pads are framed up, crushed gravel. These were all in good shape when i visited. Mostly flat and nice traction. No complaints from me on these. One tee per hole.

The course features a pretty even mix of shot shapes. Pretty balanced between forehand and back hand type shots off the tee. Hitting gaps is paramount here. While the rough isn't as thick as it first appeared, being off the fairway is not ideal.

There's a few next tee arrows throughout as well as orange tape tied to tree branches guiding you from hole to hole where it isn't entirely obvious which direction to go. There's also tree branches lining the sides of many of the paths making for a very easy layout to follow. Nicely done in this regard.

Great design to get 18 holes in this space without fairways crossing over each other. Heck, none of the holes really seemed to play that close together even. Excellent par 3 design with tough but fair lines.

The course is permanent and free to play. Probably not too busy most of the time with O'hauser being only a few minutes away.

Cons:

No tee sign maps or distances. Just little boards or something with the hole number stuck into the ground next to the front of the tee. A number of these have long since disappeared. Luckily the flow is pretty fluid so finding the next tee is pretty straightforward. I did get turned around going from hole 5 to 6. Luckily the sign was still there or I would've missed hole 6 which you head out of the woods to get to.

Very short distances here. So if you're into airing out long drives this isn't going to be the place for you. It would've be cool to see at least one or two longer holes in the woods. Unfortunately it looks like they didn't have a whole lot of space to work with.

Not a course con, just a general warning. The mosquitoes probably get pretty gnarly out here. They weren't a problem today, but it's been extremely dry around here for awhile now. Bringing bug spray is probably a good idea most of the time though.

The tee boxes were in great shape today, but these types of pads generally don't hold up too much without regular upkeep. Lots of the gravel is spilled off the sides of the tees. Luckily they're compacted really well.

Other Thoughts:

This course was a pleasant surprise. I'd play this one all the time if I lived nearby. I'm for sure going to play it again the next time I'm in the area. Definately worth a visit if you find yourself in the area. Pairs very well with nearby O'hauser to make for a fun day of disc golf.

Technical Wooded Fun

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Very fun, 90% wooded technical course. Having a big arm will not help you at all here but if you have a soft, delicate touch type shot, you will fare very well. I think only two holes were in the open.

- Lots of different and challenging lines so you will at least not be bored to death from throwing the same dead straight or 90 degree dogleg shot over and over again.

- In a secluded part of a public park so chances of beaning someone in the head from an errant tree kick is slim to none. But the chances are never zero.

- The equipment is decent and caught well which to some people matters I guess. A basket is basket but to each his/her own.

- Despite the course being almost all in the woods minus two holes, the rough is surprisingly not bad at all.

Cons:

- Teepads. I first played this course in late 2021 when there wasn't any teepads yet.. there was just wooden frames so I had to either throw inside them which wasn't pleasant. Or I had to throw beside them which made some of the lines even harder than they already were. I came back recently in hopes that they put in cement ones but unfortunately, its just gravel and it's already very rutted on most of them.

- Tee signs are just little wooden posts with the # painted on them and they are mostly being propped up on stumps and trees. All it's gonna take is one a-hole to either steal them or chuck them into the woods. Permanent signs would definitely be nice even if they had basic info.

- Some navigation is a little wonky but if you use the uDisc layout as of current, it shouldn't be a problem.

- Distances are a bit on the small side. I don't think there was more than handful of holes that went over 300 feet. Again, this is a wooded, technical intermediate level course so I felt like the distances were appropriate.

Other Thoughts:

Clayton Park in Neenah definitely has a lot of character and you can tell it's a course that gets local love. I would really like to meet the people who are volunteering to keep up the course I will be playing it quite often now that I live in the area. With a few minor semi-costly tweaks (cement or even just rubber teepads, basic signage), this could easily be a 3.5 or more.

When I first played it in '21, it was only a 9er and had no teepads aside from the wooden frames and even then I had a blast. I am absolutely loving the new 18 hole layout and I think this is a great addition the Fox River Valley disc golf scene.
