Pros:
- Very fun, 90% wooded technical course. Having a big arm will not help you at all here but if you have a soft, delicate touch type shot, you will fare very well. I think only two holes were in the open.
- Lots of different and challenging lines so you will at least not be bored to death from throwing the same dead straight or 90 degree dogleg shot over and over again.
- In a secluded part of a public park so chances of beaning someone in the head from an errant tree kick is slim to none. But the chances are never zero.
- The equipment is decent and caught well which to some people matters I guess. A basket is basket but to each his/her own.
- Despite the course being almost all in the woods minus two holes, the rough is surprisingly not bad at all.
Cons:
- Teepads. I first played this course in late 2021 when there wasn't any teepads yet.. there was just wooden frames so I had to either throw inside them which wasn't pleasant. Or I had to throw beside them which made some of the lines even harder than they already were. I came back recently in hopes that they put in cement ones but unfortunately, its just gravel and it's already very rutted on most of them.
- Tee signs are just little wooden posts with the # painted on them and they are mostly being propped up on stumps and trees. All it's gonna take is one a-hole to either steal them or chuck them into the woods. Permanent signs would definitely be nice even if they had basic info.
- Some navigation is a little wonky but if you use the uDisc layout as of current, it shouldn't be a problem.
- Distances are a bit on the small side. I don't think there was more than handful of holes that went over 300 feet. Again, this is a wooded, technical intermediate level course so I felt like the distances were appropriate.
Other Thoughts:
Clayton Park in Neenah definitely has a lot of character and you can tell it's a course that gets local love. I would really like to meet the people who are volunteering to keep up the course I will be playing it quite often now that I live in the area. With a few minor semi-costly tweaks (cement or even just rubber teepads, basic signage), this could easily be a 3.5 or more.
When I first played it in '21, it was only a 9er and had no teepads aside from the wooden frames and even then I had a blast. I am absolutely loving the new 18 hole layout and I think this is a great addition the Fox River Valley disc golf scene.
