Quick 9 in the rain

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 12, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

I had been driving for what seems like forever in torrential downpours and though I didn't feel like I could brave a full 18 holes in moderate rain this 9 hole flat college campus course seemed like an ideal leg stretch location.

It's mainly a field/rec area with a good amount of smaller trees dotted around and hole lengths in the 200-350ft range but the design is actually pretty decent. Some actual shot shaping needed on several holes and the saftety around greens and tees was clearly thought out by someone who knew disc golf.

Pads are just wooden planks holding in mulch, but it seemed fresh and every hole had a rake which is something I've not seen.

Baskets are disccatchers with custom Coastal Carolina teal bands and are numbered.

Navigation has no signs but is fairly easy to follow as long as you look in every direction.

Cons:

No signs, mulch pads, and just nine holes though the fact that they are on the campus and actually are legit holes needs some respect.

If you know what your going there for you won't likely be disappointed.

Other Thoughts:

I had a good time throwing there in the rain and it was a good place to practice for upcoming events where the weather might suck.

Coast In For A Quick Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Coastal Carolina 9 hole disc golf course is located on its University Grounds . You can have the hassle of a parking pass or paying to park , or just park across the street from the course at a college bookstore in the far end of a big lot . I saw no bathrooms here , but the course is fast and there are plenty of fast food places to go afterwards or before .
The Equipment - The tee pads for this course are natural and mostly pegged with white pegs . The tee signs are kind of a circular laminated plastic with hole number and distance in yards ( ? ) . I saw some with par 2 on them . . What The ?!? The baskets are yellow numbered Discatchers .
The Landscape - All of the course is located on a piece of lawn , and really shouldn't hold all 9 holes . The lawn was freshly mowed and bushes and trees trimmed . Maintenance keeps up on college property well . The course is parking lot flat . It's not wide open , though . It will remind you of a park style course . There are bushes and small trees to negotiate on every hole . Mostly just 1 set of them per hole .
Course Appearance/Atmosphere - The grounds staff has done a great job of keeping the campus trash free and clean , If you have tunnel vision , the course itself looks okay . In a small part of the backround , it will remind you of being on the CCU campus . The other 3 sides either have roads or sidewalks surround the course . The street traffic is constant , and any remnants of nature might have become road kill by now . Some bushes help block out some of the cars .
The Highlights - Not a lot of highlights here , but some surprising length . Don't put a lot of fact into the face page of Disc Golf Review . Sine CCU designed and put in this course , they have upgraded some things . I saw some basket tubes here which means that there are now alternate pins to go with the upgraded Discatcher baskets . #4 is a good hole if you are aware of which basket you are throwing to . The basket is hidden and just to the left of the tee , with some large bushes hiding it .
Signature Hole - I liked #9 ( 325' ) . It is a S shot with the basket tucked into a small green deep between a set of trees . Disc Risk - The lawn is well taken care of . There are chances to throw your disk into some deep bushes , but they can be easily retrieved . The risk is low .
The Time - Since the course is all on one section of lawn , it took me about 27 minutes to play this course . A group of 4 will go through in less than an hour .
CCU is not that big , and Georgetown College right across the street will benefit from an accessible course within walking distance of both main campuses . .

Cons:

#1 Logjam - If 4 or more groups or even singles are on this course at any given time , there will be some standing around . The course plays mostly back and forth or at an angle , with the exception of maybe #4 . No real blind shots , so no one will be in danger unless someone throws a plastic rocket into the wind .
#2 Navigation - The tees are numbered , as are the baskets , but without a map , you might end up shooting at a wrong basket ( like I did when I teed off on 4 and ended up playing to #6 basket ) . You will definitely find all of the 9 holes , you might just get turned around some , like #8 to 9 . .
#3 - This course might bore some of the better players . Lots of straight or slightly angled shots . A flat course with no water or length will only make for a practice facility for them. IMO , this is the next step up from local courses Sherwood and Waccamaw ,
#5 Parking Safely - I am guessing that as long as you park as far away from the bookstore as possible no one will bother your car . You will only be out of it jor just over 30 minutes . I still checked on mine a time or 2 , just in case an employee or manager saw me pull out a disc bag from the car .

Other Thoughts:

This course is an okay play for the students of both colleges to let off some steam and grab a quick round before cracking some books or some beer . Looking this course over , I saw some potential for some night golf for the students and locals to get a glow fix on a Friday or Saturday night . Maybe have a part of some proceeds go toward some better tee pads . I think that they have the cheap signs because they pull right out of the ground and most of the grounds can be mowed without any trimming . At least they have the school mascot/logo on them . I thik it a good idea to put a disc golf course on campus grounds , It is good advertisement for players to stop by and admire the campus , and introduce themselves to the local population .
My Recommendation - This course can't be in a much better location than where it is . Students from 2 colleges have access , it is right in the small town of Conway and even the locals can tell you how to at least drive to the campus .
Families , coeds , dates , faculty , locals and 1 disc wonders should fall in love with the course . Intermediates and up might be able to play here with just a couple of midranges and a putter , and it would be a good warmup course for Socastee , less than 20 minutes away . As good for the traveler as it is for the Course Collector . This course sits right off of 501 , and is on the way to or from Myrtle Beach , is a fast play easy-on-the-legs stretcher , and can be grouped with several other courses going either way . Not a place to put a lot of emphasis on playing , it is still worth a try , and maybe drive through the campuses and the city .

Fly Like a Chanticleer 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 15, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Coastal Carolina's layout gives you a sense of low country disc golf: flat, field disc golf. It's perfectly suitable if you've got the place to yourself; otherwise, she looks much different.
- Wow, this course plays so much like Park Circle in North Charleston. Instead of crossing roads after every hole at PC, the layout is all in one field here.
- Nine holes in a five to six acre field. Nine holes averaging 284 feet in a space that size. I'll give the designers credit for making it work.
- The layout flows nicely with holes mostly having slightly different looks. That usually means the obstacles on the course are trees, shrubs, or plants located near baskets. Slight dogleg right around trees on #1, basket protected by a tree on #7, basket behind tree and bushes on #9. You get the idea.
- #4 - 6 is the best stretch of holes on the course. #4 has the most flow to its fairway. It's the longest hole on the course at 327 feet. It's also the only hole on the course where you can't just bail out far left or right.
- #5 & 6 have trees lining the right side of the fairway. They serve as a nice buffer from the roads while potentially penalizing any shot that goes too far right.
- Excellent course for field work and/or a safari layout. I'd reckon locals/students have created more enjoyable layouts than the actual course itself.
- Course is good for casual players. I imagine a lot of students with one or two discs hit up this course a lot.
- Very clean course. Lawn was freshly mowed. No trash or anything else that I noticed.

Cons:

Navigation. It can be better. In a singular field, and with the UDisc app map, this is a complicated course to play as a first timer. A lot of 'is that the correct tee?' or 'wait, which basket am I throwing to?' questions to myself. On one hole, I met a local who pointed out the tee markers were actually in a different spot that what's marked on the app.
- Along those lines, tees are flagged by two white markers in the ground. There were also other white markers throughout the field that seemingly didn't have anything to do with the course. Maybe they're alternate tees perhaps?
- Without a course map or guide, first time navigation is tricky. On several holes, the markers were in different spots than what the map indicated. So, who knows?
- Overlapping holes. If you're building a nine-hole layout in a field, make sure the field is big enough. CCU's layout is tight, especially for being so ambitious with length. I would not have fun playing here if there were players on every hole. I'd have to watch for errant shots from multiple directions and I'd be too concerned about keeping my tee shot dead-straight. I think #1 & 6 are the closest things to having isolated layouts.
- Unused space. The grass field to the right of #6 could be used for one or two baskets. Take out baskets from this space, put them over there, and suddenly everything isn't so congested.

Other Thoughts:

- Your impression of the CCU course will most likely be based upon the number of other players at the time of your round. If you're like me, and there was only one other player, you will enjoy your round as you've plenty of space to throw. If you're playing when the course is crowded, you won't like it as much. She doesn't look the same when you're sober.
- As much as I can appreciate or criticize the holes themselves, it really is about the spacing. It wasn't until #8 that I noticed an obviously less-than-stellar layout. You can easily play this course with nine straight 3s and never be at risk for a bogey or have a birdie run if you throw away from the trees. You can also try to hug every corner, risk smacking trees, and most likely salvage par with minimal effort.
- Tee markers should have hole numbers on them. That would help with some confusion.
- With this field, the course could be getting redesigned all the time. Why not get creative, have multiple pin positions, and create different looks all the time? The current layout would get repetitive pretty fast. Make the best of this use of land and get weird.
- Based on the course at the time of when I played, I liked it. It's a longer layout than previously, based on older reviews. It does give players a chance to throw multiple discs off the tees. Just avoid the crowds and it should be a nice round.

CCU - bring the family, bring the newbies 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice grass on this pretty piece of campus.
The baskets are all in great shape.
Easy to locate, right at the campus entrance from 501.
Not much chance of losing a disc here.
Plenty of distance for a niner.

Cons:

No tees or tee signs. Most holes have PVC pipes marking the tees, but not all. I just walked a few feet toward the next tee, and picked a spot.
A little tough to find the 1st "tee", the map on here is not current.
Parking in the lot next to the course could be a problem, park across the campus drive, by the bookstore.
No water, restrooms or any signage.

Other Thoughts:

Set in a nice, park-like lot on the campus. A good place for students to come out and unwind, without being difficult. A good place to bring beginners, great grass, limited trees, not much chance of losing one. A great place to bring the little ones, they can make their own tees and run around all they want.
This course does have some good points, just not too challenging for anything above a beginner.
As another reviewer noted, the tees, tee signs and old, shorter layout are gone. These holes now take up the entire lot and it creates some nice holes. There are some trees to shape lines, but not a lot.
It looks like someone started to redesign it as a longer course, but after they moved the baskets, they moved on. A little TLC and maybe some challenging tee positions and this could be an interesting niner.

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Coastal Carolina University (CCU) is a fun 9-hole course on a pretty piece of property on the campus of CCU and the adjoining community college.

+ The entire course is on a beautiful tract of land, park setting, bordered by campus roads and the main highway. For a quick causal round of golf, this is the best option in Myrtle (as far as 9-holers go). I don't see a reason to pay per round at Tupelo Bay when you can play as long as you want to at CCU for free.

+ Good baskets.

+ I was really surprised by how long the holes were. Most 9-holers are pitch and putts. Not CCU. All holes are over 200 feet, almost all over 250 feet (maybe 8 out of 9?), and about half are 300+. And if that's still not long enough for you, you can play CCU safari style. It's really just a big field dotted with baskets and beach trees. The tees are natural and marked (for the most part). But you can throw to any basket from anywhere you want to.

+ Very clean and well-maintained. Manicured grass. Feels like you're on a ball golf course. No risk of disc loss. No underbrush at all.

+ Easy to get here from Myrtle Beach, right of a main highway. Park at the bookstore across the street from the course.

Cons:

CCU is a fun 9-hole course, but does have some frustrations:

- The course is not well marked for navigation. Tees are marked with dual white PVC pipes. But they don't indicate which holes they're for. Sometimes it's intuitive, but not always. I played to the wrong basket a couple of times and didn't realize it until I got close enough to see the number on the basket. Also, the way they've laid out the course doesn't match up with the UDisc map. You can choose which one you want to follow though. Like I said, there aren't real tees, so you can play it however you want to.

- Tees are natural and not always well marked or easy to find.

- No elevation. (They did a good job of using the space they have though, including nearly 100% of the property and good guardian trees.)

- Not much variety. They mix it up some with distance and trees, but not much.

Other Thoughts:

If you play 1 9-holer in Myrtle, play this one. If you play 2 courses in Myrtle, play Socastee and this one. Socastee is clearly tops, but Tupelo Bay is a distant third.

Pros:

Landscape kept very well, beautifully mowed grass.
Bring a putter and a mid, you won't need much more. The course is great for practicing those shots!

Cons:

No tees
No signage
Pretty confined space

Other Thoughts:

I was disappointed when I visited this course. The pictures I had seen all showed tee boxes and great signs. When I went, all tees had been removed in return for a couple pvc poles spaced about ten feet apart and grass in the middle. All signage had been removed. The only distance I had to go off of was what had been provided on DGCR previously and was then outdated. I was unsure about a couple of baskets and their correlating tees because the only hole information was the number on top of its target, my eyes just aren't that good. Hopefully the absence of tees and signage means they're testing for a longer hole layout!

Putt-Putt! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 6, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice to see disc golf officially incorporated into the local university to grow the sport. The grounds of this course are impeccably maintained, far better than most short courses I have ever seen. Beautiful shrubs and flowers lined almost every hole.

Baskets were all gently-used Discatchers.

Tee boxes were ample and allowed far more runup than would be needed on most of these holes.

There was actualy fair variation in the shot types needed on this course, and a few ornamental trees actually became obstacles if the golfer missed in the wrong position.

This would be a great course to introduce a beginner, or for someone to come and play this one using SuperClass discs. I think SuperClass might make this one a lot more fun now that I think about it.

Most high level players will be able to easily birdie every hole, and have mostly unrestrained ace-runs if that is what you are looking for.

The tee signs here are really nice...far nicer than I would have expected from such a short course.

Cons:

The obvious - most of these holes are well under 200 ft. I think the yardages on the signs may even be a bit generous. This is a complete pitch-and-putt. It was so short that I actually found it hard to get myself invested in the round. I can see where that would be nice for someone trying to sneak in a quick round in between classes though, so I suspect this course is filling exactly the role for which it was intended. I'm not sure if that is something that I can fault the course for.

I didn't enjoy the woodchip teeboxes. They were very uneven, so even if I had wanted to do a runup, I'm not sure if it would have been a very stable platform. Luckily a runup here isn't generally a necessity.

Other Thoughts:

I am always supportive of schools setting up disc golf on their property, especially when they let outsiders come in and join in on the fun. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the available terrain used in the making of this course so it could have a bit more challenge to it (there are stakes and flags out right now with hole signs, so as far as I know this might be happening in the near future...maybe a redesign or a back 9?).

Pros:

This course is really well maintained and easy to navigate. Very nice signage with hole # and distance noted.

Cons:

Only nine holes most of them being really short. The longest hole on the course was only 258 feet. Out of 9 holes 6 of them are less than 200 feet. Tee pads consisted of wood chip mulch which can make for some loose footing, but not a real issue here being there really are no holes that call for the long bomb.

Other Thoughts:

This course was in really good shape and you can tell it is well taken care of. A really experienced player will not find this course challenging at all.
