Welcoming Church Course Combines Desert Scrub And Church Parking Lots! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

When you enter the parking lot at the First Baptist Church of Fountain Hills, you see the first tee of the disc golf course. There's also a course rules sign, a mailbox type box with maps (which actually was full of maps) and a box full of loaner discs. Heck, they could have left me $ for lunch!

Unfortunately, I was not so impressed with little 12 hole course here. The baskets were nice DGA Mach V's with a small orange band on top and the church's name and the hole number/or numbers as some are used for two holes. The tee pads are either little rubber mats, natural or painted spots on sidewalks. Signage is lacking too.

The course plays partly through a very rough area of desert scrub. The foliage here is thick, fairly tall and the terrain is treacherous. Then holes 5-8 play across the church's parking lots. I didn't much care for either of these for different reasons. The parking lots are extremely hard on your discs. Also, if there are any cars parked there, you have to skip those holes. I would skip them if necessary but I wonder if the average, teenager, would be so considerate? And I thought # 7 was a really fun, thread the needle throw between some trees.
I liked the last hole too. # 12 is just a simple 203' straight throw across the parking lot to a basket sitting in the berm. It's nothing tricky, just kinda simple and enjoyable.

Cons:

There were 2-3 blind throws out in the scrub brush I didn't care for.
I really didn't like # 4. It's a straight 261' shot with tight OB fence on the left and tight parking lot and building on the right side. And then there was a trailer chained to a tree along the way that kind of ruined the hole for me.

Some tees were a little difficult to find, especially on the way back.

Other Thoughts:

There are signs on the building warning people that they should be aware of flying discs. Somehow, I don't think this course will ever get enough use that safety should become too much of a concern. I think most players will just head down the street and play the more established course at Fountain Hills Park.

Near the BB courts, there are light switches where you can turn on lights for night play. That's kinda cool! Although, I don't know what I think about about stumbling around through that treacherous, desert scrubby terrain in the dark! Still, it's an awfully nice gesture on the part of the church folks here. Now, about my lunch money!
