Pros:
-significant elevation in play on most holes
-a number of trees to avoid, mostly in patches with nasty rough
-variety of options with 2 sets of tees and 4 pin positions
-tee sign posts with bag hangers
-smallish concrete tees
Cons:
-it's a locals course: lots of tees and pins are great for the locals and super annoying for the first timer, tough to navigate
-signs capable of showing current pin location but do not
-limited street parking on the opposite side of the park from hole 1
-poison oak
-some questionable pin locations right next to what look like big patches of poison oak (8a, in particular)
Other Thoughts:
The many elevated tee shots are the main draw of this course. Holes 5 and 8 throw significantly downhill, holes 1-3 throw moderately downhill from the longs, and holes 4, 6 and 7 throw uphill. The many tees and pin positions make it great for locals but frustrating to navigate for the first timer. Definitely bring a map.
Some of the thick rough definitely has poison oak so I was making a concerted effort to play conservatively. I imagine this would get tiresome for a local but I guess you learn where to avoid.
The parking situation is strange. The course really should be renumbered to start on hole 5 or 8 and use the opportunity to update the signage. Maybe there's a local system in play that I don't understand but I thought the lack of pin indicators was weird (or just lazy) both here and at Parque de la Raza.
Hellyer is conveniently located right off 101 and down the street from Parque de la Raza. That said, I would probably rather just throw 2 rounds at Parque. You are well exposed to the sun in the dust bowl of Hellyer Park and other than the downhill tee shots, the course is pretty bland.
