Creativity Unbounded

Other Thoughts:

Located at a brewery, this layout is full sized, but essentially a backyard course (that's been created by a mad genius)

~ The layouts range from 5800' to a crazy 8300' from the long tees, but it's really easy to get lost among all the tees (mostly natural) and baskets (mostly portable). The signage isn't always helpful, some holes appear to have extra baskets (none are numbered), and the basket to next tee navigation is confusing in spots. The maps available in the retail store are more trusty than uDisc. And there's craft beer on the premises - so these thing balance out

~ I understand that uDisc layouts are being updated, so maybe navigation will become less of a challenge. But the course is so creative that I strongly recommend hooking up with a local who's played here before. You'll have a lot more fun

~ The golf presents varied challenges:steep elevation, woods, water, length. One layout was used for a NADGT (look for the blue 5 gallon buckets marking those tees)

~ The design creativity applied to this property is evident right from the start: the first tee is pavers in a shed: you throw out across a long, tightly-wooded valley to a basket balancing on the face of the opposite hill. After climbing down and back up on the first hole, hole #2 is a cliffside throw into a valley with a choice of three baskets. The most tempting of which is the "tree basket" that's suspended between two sawed off tree trunks about 12' above the ground (thanks for the aluminum extension ladder leaning against one of the trees!)

~ The navigation problems began on Hole #4, a blind downhill 400' that's heavily wooded. There was no blue (NAGDT layout) basket anywhere near the spot indicated by the map at the tee, but four red baskets could be seen in various locations that were not on the map. And since no baskets are numbered, it was difficult to know where to throw. I sure didn't want to walk back up the steep hill and start over. This was the moment I started wishing I was playing with a local. Or had picked up a map.

~ Creeping Creek is a challenging course that's best played if not taken too seriously. It's fun, friends, beer, and some crazy shots. It's the ultimate creative backyard course. You'll be throwing through narrow wooded alleys, down roads, around beekeeping areas, across fields, and back and forth over a pond. Sure, you might throw at the wrong basket or from the wrong tee a few times. But there's serious distance for the big arms; there's water carries for the thrillseekers, there's hard hiking for exercise enthusiasts, and there's beer for anyone of legal age.

Pros:

With a steep, open, slopes, a section of mid-sized hardwoods criss-crossed by narrow-to-broad paths, two small ponds, and a streamlet, there's a nice blend of natural resources with which to work.

Motivated co-designers Matt and Andrew often tweak the course in order to maximize its potential.

On-site brewery - Milk Stout was my favourite.

Cons:

Natural tees can be sloped, uneven, rocky, etcetera.

Single-chain, portable baskets, a couple set quite low, a couple quite high.

Limited availability - always check ahead.

Other Thoughts:

This course plays up/down/across the open space, and into/out-from/thru a small patch of woods, of a small up-n-coming brewery. With no hole over 400' and 2/3rds 300' or less, your control game is what will be challenged here. The wooded holes are not particularly tight, but require a specific window, usually late, to be hit in order to have the birdy opp. Many of the more-open holes have steep down-slopes, requiring a very delicate touch.

Favourite holes: Number-6, from an elevated position, has a pond ~200' away, behind which is a small clearing, with the basket not far from the pond shore. From the tee, branches from the trees "frame" the pond, so you'll need to either go underneath them, or try up-n-over. Number-12, ~400', goes ever so gently upslope through a mixture of hardwoods, with the basket in a slightly elevated position on a small mound of rocks.

Least Favourite: Number-13. The natural tee was short, rocky, and tree-rooted, and bounded on the front and back by the streamlet. Tree branches require the drive to stay low early, but upon exiting the woods, the hill slopes steeply upward.

Navigation: The map is a must, as the tees are only marked by small, in-ground flags, with no other signage, and the course is continuing to evolve. There are a few places where you backtrack or cross other tees.

A fun course worth a visit, especially for beer connoisseurs.

Update 11/18/12: Course is in winter (longer) setup. Roughly 1/3rd of the holes remain unchanged, 1/3rd add considerable length, and 1/3rd are either new or so different from their summer counterpart that they should be considered new. Maps for both winter and summer layouts available under Links.
