DeBusk Park

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 2, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-- Tee pads. They are 6x12 concrete on every hole.
-- DISCatcher baskets. They are showing signs of age but still catch well.
-- Navigation is mostly good. The transition from 2-3 is the only one that is iffy. After 2, follow the walking path across the bridge and go left and up the hill to 3.
-- Elevation (although not huge) is well used. Three and six throw downhill; five throws uphill. The 8 basket sits on the edge of a hill; and the 9 fairway has a large hill on the left side.
-- Water is in play on holes 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9. It's 20-25 wide and about 15 feet down to generally shallow water. If you can traverse the steep banks, retrieving a wet disc shouldn't be difficult. On 2 (405 feet), you've got an open fairway, but you've got water right and an OB sidewalk left. You also have an inlet from the creek about 300 feet from the tee. Three (362 feet) has you throwing slightly downhill with the creek close left and tree/bushes guarding the approach on the right side of the basket. Holes 7-9 all play with the creek right of an open fairway.
-- Restrooms at parking lot.

Cons:

-- No map on site.
-- No tee signs. You've got tall, yellow metal poles with hole number. That's it.
-- No disc golf specific seating, but No. 1 has a picnic table next to the tee; five has a bench on the walking path at the tee; six has a pavilion near the tee.
-- Hole 5 has some danger. A picnic table just short and right of the basket is definitely an issue as is a walking path not far behind the basket.

Other Thoughts:

-- Course starts with the easiest and shortest hole (132 feet). There are trees to navigate, but there is no way any experienced player will be happy with a 3. Then you get to the longest (405) and most-difficult hole.
-- As a low intermediate player, I expect to shoot under par but never do. This isn't any kind of destination course, but it serves its purpose to allow for a relaxed round with some excellent birdie chances. It also is a great alternative when nearby 18-hole courses (Audubon, Paschall) are too crowded or wet.
-- The walk from 7 to 8 has you right next to a major road with no space between the sidewalk and the road. A similar walk is required from 9 to 1.
-- Maintenance is likely a mixed bag. Holes 1-7 play in a part of the park with a walking path and other activities and seems to get mowed regularly. Holes 8-9 don't have any other activities, and don't seem to get much attention.
-- Other than the water, disc loss potential is low.

A good entry level course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The tee pads are super big and offer the player the proper run up. The course flows logically and rounds should play quickly here. There are directional arrows to assist your navigation. This is a nice beginner level course with a good mix of short and moderate length holes.
There is a nice bridge to assist in the crossing of the ditch/creek between 2 and 3. The course was well maintained and there were other amenities on both sides of the course.
Hole observations:
1-short with a low ceiling-ACE RUN FUN
2-moderate length and has a ditch on the right hand side to throw over with the basket on a bit of an island
3-moderate length with a grove of trees on the right hand side
4-basket is out in the open
5-uphill shot with moderate length and a few trees on the left hand side of the fairway upon approach
6-downhill shorter length shot
7-9 were basically the same shots being moderate in length and open with the ditch/creek on the right hand side of the fairway

Cons:

Some of the walks between holes are a bit lengthy-see holes 2 to 3, and 7to 8, and 9 to the parking lot.
Grass was thick and needing a mowing on holes 8 and 9.
The hard pack can get slick around the baskets, possibly some wood chips might help with grip here.
The walking paths could come into play so be aware before you throw.
No signage-just poles with numbers on some. Looks like the signage has been stolen??
Some fairways, like 3 and 4, can hold water.

Other Thoughts:

This is a pretty good 9 hole course that has some fun shots and some moderate length. Its a good entry level course that will challenge new players and will give them a good look at birdies or possible an ACE on a few holes. Its not a technical course by any means so if you are looking for that you will have to move on down the road. It is however a decent park style 9 that most players will enjoy. If you are needing a warm up before you go to Paschall or you just want to get in a quick 9 then hit this one up.

Nice quick round 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Clean park. Beginner friendly. Big yellow posts with red top make it where you don't need next Tee signs. Nice disc catchers. Enough parking. Hole 1 is the most technical hole as it has more trees than most of the others. Great place to bring your practice basket and make up your own shots, mainly because there are some hills from which to launch that were not used in the design. Some were, just not all. Big mean drainage ditch/creek. Discs are retrievable but it is pretty steep in a couple of spots. Wind can add challenge as it is a pretty wide open course except for a few pockets of trees. Hole 2 used the creek nicely. It is about 300 ft. to the pin with the creek about 240. Which leaves us noodle arms with a question of strategery. Pros would consider it another ace run and just park it. Great practice course or place to play your 1st round because of the lack of trees and deep water hazards.

Cons:

People everywhere, 1st day of spring may have played a role. The design could have been better IMO, the hills would have been fun to launch off of. Just nitpicking. For what this park is, there isn't too many cons. Just few design tweaks would suit me. Of course there is the safety issue and that is because they put a disc golf course in a busy park, so no big surprise. We are used to sharing these city park type courses with civilians anyways so just watch out for the little ones.

Other Thoughts:

This is a quick round and good practice for whatever shot you need to work on, because it's so open and forgiving of poor 1st shots. If you are close then by all means bag it and porter park is only about 4 miles away.

Fun for all 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The city always does a great job for making courses and keeping them well kept.
Great for Right Handed Side Arm throwers and for Lefties!
I have never played it when it was crowded. This could be a great place to let the kids and wife hangout on the playground equipment while you squeeze 9 holes in under an hour. Even though it has little shot variety, it has a few holes that make it worth playing.
Top 3 holes.

#2 Is the best hole on the course. You have to either throw short of the creek or cross over a creek that cuts in the fairway. A stream also flows on the right of this hole and could eat some discs. Also play the concrete OB.

#3 This hole along with 2 or the top holes to play. Good shots are a must, but even a beginner can handle it. Very balanced.

#7 Longer in comparison to the others on the course. Roughly wide open but the creek will come into play. Big arms will have no problem making a 2 or a 3.

For only 9 holes it is a fun little course and worth playing.

Cons:

#8 & 9 seem like the same hole played twice.

#1 is very short...too short.

No bridge to cross over the #8 or back to #1. You have to walk right by the road, and if you have kids this can be scary.

Won't affect play but some of the tee signs are missing or vandalized.

Other Thoughts:

If you live in the area this would be a nice course to come to after work. Just lacking a few things but it does compare well to the others in the area.

Good Beginner 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 8, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good beginner course. Pretty wide open and not much OB for upper caliber player. Good baskets and concrete tee pads, along with good tee signs. You can play this course very fast and multiple times!! Not very busy so you can throw lots of drives and test new discs/shots out.

Cons:

Too easy for Pro/Adv player. No bridges on backside. Other then that, there are no complaints.

Other Thoughts:

Bring suntan lotion in the summer. Dont know how it would be after a big rain with the creekbed being there.

Debusk DGC Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 24, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Great signage at every hole.
- Great course to practice driving due to open terrain.
- Very attractive park. Part of the course follows a creek that comes slightly into play on a few holes.
- Course is well groomed and maintained.

Cons:

- Almost too open.
- You don't have to think much on this course.
- Needs more trees and/or shrubs to create obstacles or hazards to get around or avoid.
- Should build 2 bridges. One to cross over the creek from 7 to 8 and one to cross over the creek after 9 to get back to the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

This a fun little course and I will definitely play here again. If you have a consistent throw and can putt at all, Par should be in range for even beginners.
