Challenging Wooded Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is the longer, more challenging course at D.R. Disc Golf. At 6125' total length it is not a monster. but it is completely wooded, making it seem longer.

Really outstanding variety and distribution of hole lengths and shapes. Fairways include dead-straight, along with an even mix of left and right bending and doglegged holes. Being able to throw both sweeping anhyzers and late-fading forehands will help you to navigate the fairways.

The six par-3 holes average just 195', so you've got some ace run opportunities and some almost certain birdies, assuming you can hit a line.

The six par-4 holes average 313'. So you can see that the pars are soft out here, even given the wooded course. I'm an 850-rated DG'er and have shot comfortably under par every round.

The longest holes are designated par-5 and average 513' with the longest at 621'. All of these fairways twist and turn, and you can be sure you'll hit a tree or two. But the ground is pretty clean so disc finding isn't a chore, and you just might discover a back-door route to the basket. But on many holes you'll have to take your medicine and pitch back into the fairway.

A huge amount of work has gone into creating and maintaining the fairways. They are reasonable width and shape, and are covered with the chipped wood of cut and fallen trees. It is a uniquely pleasant surface to walk and play over.

Raised wooden tee platforms are in excellent shape with adequate size and good texture. If you use a galloping run-up you will find them too small but I liked them fine. Picnic tables, ash trays and trash cans at every holes, and a couple of porta-potties are strategically located near hole intersections.

Mach-X baskets are in excellent shape and catch well.

So with the exception of tee signs (see cons) the infrastructure is solid.

Cons:

The only signs at the tees are large, bright hole numbers. So there is not doubt that you're in the right place. However, for distance and par you'll have to refer to the scorecard. The scorecard also includes a simple course map on the back, but beyond letting you know that the hole bends right or left it's not detailed enough to rely on.

I found myself scouting forward on almost all of the longer holes to spot the basket. On some holes I walked up over half of the hole length which resulted in a lot of extra walking. The Mach-X baskets catch great but are a trial to spot in these woods.

This course lacks significant elevation or water.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nicely designed and maintained DG complex. There is adequate parking, a small but decent pro shop, plenty of porta potties, tables, trash cans, etc. and friendly staff.

Wooded, but a surprising gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Good baskets.
- Wood chips. Entire fairways, not just the holes. Kept things dry despite one of the rainiest June's I can remember in Maine.
- No undergrowth. This course is entirely in the woods, yet there was no undergrowth. It bears repeating: no undergrowth! Wow.
- Shop
- Map on the back of scorecard
- Almost all holes had clear lanes. Probably all, but a couple asked for more accuracy than I have to give.

Cons:

- Wooden tees. I rank them a con more for being unfamiliar than for any serious problem. They were ok when I played though, so I didn't take points off for this.
- Could be better marked.
- Short on variety. No streams, very little elevation change, and no fields whatsoever. Trees are the only obstacle, and they do a good job with them, but it makes the holes all feel the same.

Other Thoughts:

Yes, it's short on variety, but I'm still giving it a 4 because it impressed the hell out of me. I love the Maine woods. It's one of the reasons I play disc golf in the first place. But undergrowth leads to tics and lost discs which are not fun. This course has eliminated undergrowth, and that makes all the difference. My hat is off to these guys. I've got to get back up there and play again!

Mostly woods but well done 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 14, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

concrete pad tees
some fun up and down hilly holes
well kept
stocked pro shop
plenty of woodchips for a clean course floor, easy to find your disc
portapotty about halfway through course
lots of picnic tables

Cons:

Mostly wooded, would be nice to have more variety in hole elements.
Not many open, let 'er rip holes (skill/accuracy/tomahawks a must)

Other Thoughts:

Nice course, well maintained. All concrete pad tees. lots of picnic tables to rest at. Easy navigation. Not as much thick brush/tall grass to lose your disc in. Lots of clearing done with clean woodchip floor. Mostly a trip through woods but there are a few field holes, and nice hard rights and lefts, and couple ups and downs keep it interesting. Pro shop stocked with discs, bags, baskets, snacks, drinks. Owner is nice, gave me a good deal on a bag. he said another course is underway here. he let me test drive several discs until i found one that really worked for me. I am sure I will be back several times as this is close to home!

great course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a fun and challenging course to play for golfers of all skill levels. The course is easy to follow with signs at each basket pointing towards the tee for the next hole. Most of the tees are cement pads, a few are wood chips because those holes may change in the near future to accomadate an additional course. Good variety of tee shots: hyzers, anhyzers, some straight up the middle.

Cons:

The day after rain, some of the holes can be pretty water logged, especially in the spring. The staff is quick to lay down fresh wood chips to absorb/cover the water though.

Other Thoughts:

Good course, friendly owner and staff in the club house. Check out their blog at http://www.orringtondiscgolf.blogspot.com /
