Rocks, Valleys, and Discs. Oh My! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

+concrete tee pads
+very nice tee signs and other markers denoting holes
+course map (not the easiest to decipher but better than no map)
+Hole 18 ends near hole 1 tee. This is always a plus
+GREAT use of elevation and terrain

Cons:

-not all tee pads concrete
-some of the fairways needed better upkeep
-the other comments about rocks are legit. solid footwear is a requirement here
-some baskets are painted dark in color making them harder to find

Other Thoughts:

Overall I found this course to be very enjoyable. Some deep thought went into the layout of the course and signage really enhances the course. The elevation aspect of the terrain is well utilized and really makes you think about your shot. What would make this course even better would be fairway clean up. Sharp, difficult to navigate rocks are definitely a concern within the fairways.

War Stories 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 17, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

An experience you will never forget. This course will challenge even the Best Players. Only a crazy man would put a disc golf course here. You will tell your friends war stories about this place and they won't believe you. I have never seen anything like this in my life and that includes on tv.

Cons:

Don't play during rain, you will get hurt. No path or bridge across creek in some areas. Some of the arrows to next tee pad are missing but most have 1 to 3 signs to help you navigate. Don't have any idea how far 9 is from parking lot but just plan on playing all 18. Don't bring a cart on this course. Make sure that you use both straps on your pack so your hands are free to keep you alive.

Other Thoughts:

When I play this course I where steel toe work boots and i don't think it is overkill. I usually play in tennis shoes. Just make sure you have a hard sole and ankle support. I had a roll away off the basket that went more then 150' and I never found the disc. So get ready to do some disc hunting. Take lots of water because the wind is scared of this course.

beautiful/tons of fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Dragon's Ridge is a very challenging/technical 18 hole course. It will force you to throw all kinds of shots. It's in a beautiful spot, I took my wife and she really enjoyed the hike (she doesn't throw). The course is very easy to navigate once you find the first teepad. Each hole has a map, and the basket positions are clearly marked. I didn't see any trash on the course, it seems to be maintained by a crew/club who really love it.

Cons:

Not all holes have concrete teepads. There aren't any holes where you can air out a distance driver... this is a "speed 7 and under" kind of course.

Other Thoughts:

This course hasn't been reviewed in a year. It's a real gem, and deserves an average score a higher than it's current score of 3.45 IMO. I took my wife and her 70-year old parents (they enjoy hiking) on a 90-degree day, no one complained the course was too rugged.

a hiking trail with a disc golf course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 30, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great baskets, signage, concrete pads, fun holes, easy to find, ample parking, wildlife, benches, shade, technical, and more...

Edit: great locals, when visiting family I found my chance to hit this course again and ran into league night. They have a great bunch of locals to play a round with on a Thursday evening.

Cons:

I had a hard time finding tee #2 and it appeared that somebody had uprooted the sign and I couldn't see the basket so it took me a while to figure out where I was supposed to go -- but that was the only hole with that problem.

edit: the fixed hole #2, but the city is building something around another hole and will probably require reworking it.

Other Thoughts:

I'd almost call this course an Ozark hiking trail that just happens to have a disc golf course along it; but that isn't fair to the fact that it really has some well designed and fun holes.

I always play DG in my sandals but that is NOT an option here. You NEED to wear some good shoes and clothes that you aren't afraid of getting dirty if you end up butt scooting or climbing down a ravine to retrieve your disc. This is not a course that you can write on your scorecard, look at your phone or daydream while walking; if you do, you are likely to have bad day -- watch where you are stepping.

If you are used to flat terrain, you are going to love hole 6. I wished I had a giant bag of discs I didn't care about and could have just thrown discs at that basket all day long. I agree that hole 7 might be the signature hole for the course, its perfect.

I definitely wouldn't take a total beginner or somebody that is afraid of hiking on this course; but if you aren't afraid of a workout, up for a technical course and up for an adventure then its a must play. I'll be playing it everytime I visit family in the area.

hidden gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very good use of the land and elevation

Challenging fairways, but not impossible "poke and hope" type holes

Terrain is rocky, so there is not much underbrush that grows like I am accustomed to.

The placements are nice. Some are guarded by trees, some are on the edge of cliffs, one was elevated in the middle of a tree.

Cons:

They still need a few tee pads on the newer holes, I am sure they are coming soon though, and the ones that didn't have them weren't on a bad spot to throw from

Not really a con, but this course would not be great for a beginner, if you don't have decent control, you're going to have a rough day.

Other Thoughts:

They did a good job designing this course. The terrain is rough, but i loved it. They had a disclaimer, saying that several holes are steep and rugged. You need to be in decent shape and have good footwear. They warned you. I really liked this course, its several hours away, but I'd definitely make the trip again.

side note: Had my first ace ever here, so I'll always have a soft spot for this course, but it genuinely was fun.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 1, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

concrete tee pads are all done..work is constantly being done to improve this already awesome coarse, there are multible basket locations to keep it interesting..the local club has put a lot of work into this coarse and it really shows, great signage, benches at most tees, trash cans...sweet

Cons:

still needs some stairs and step work but i have no doubt that will be tended to in the near future, a very rugged and heavily wooded coarse, they recommend good footwear and extra water so prepare for this and enjoy .

Other Thoughts:

This coarse is a wild ride through the rugged untamed ozark hills..it is a true jewel to play, I truly look forward to every round ..its tough but fair, its cruel but rewarding .if you play this game for a little extra exercise then this is the coarse for you...located at the lake of the ozarks i can see this becoming a destination coarse for many lake visitors..

Destination Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Unique disc golfing experience. Heavily wooded, extremely hilly, and a whole lot of fun. some extreme pin placements make this course memorable. Leave the drivers in the car and bring your HQ plastic as they will take a beating.

Cons:

Not a full 18 not quite sure if they have the room to expand if they wanted to, but I hope they do.

Other Thoughts:

If you're making a trip to the Lake of the Ozarks bring your discs.

Chiseled From Missouri Limestone 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 18, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is the kind of course that you dream about someday building - but seldomly have the property to use with all the elements present at the same time. Mr. Braman found a hardscrabble piece of land with a seldomly used area that just happened to be owned by the city. Viola! The perfect place to build a disc golf course. Fresh out of the box he created and executed a suburb course with many of the elements which ultimately will make a "great" course. The course isn't done yet - it only has 10 holes - but just wait til he lays in those last 8, this will be a Destination Course and put Mid-Missouri on the map! What do I see that he has done right:
1) He didn't unveil it until he had it playable - it is highly playable and frickin FUN!
2) He has temporary signage that would be the envy of courses that have been around for several years.
3) He created a flow from hole to hole that takes you on the best ride in the park - a monster roller coaster ride that starts out slow, gets you to the top of the ride and lets you scream all the way to the bottom only to be whipped right and left and start another climb back up this monster. From there you jump across creeks, through trees, into ravines, and around corners.
4) He created what I like to refer to as "Fair" fairways - most holes (as you can see from his painstakingly well done hole diagrams) you can see the basket right in front of you. Devilishly right in front of you between 180 - 275 ft. That is if you can thread your way through the trees, over the creeks and past the hills. While these lengths are not daunting to the beginning to intermediate player on the flat - add in the 25 degree downhill run, through trees, past the ravine on the right, with a creek bed at the bottom if you overshoot the basket. Now that's fun! I think the popular phrase would be "a technical course".
5) He has used the topography to his advantage - making each hole unique, challenging, and beautiful. This park is awesome for it's natural beauty!
6) It is this good and only a month old - that should say something about when he and his helpers have some decent weather to spiff it up and get some more of the creature comforts that we all like - like stairs, benches, garbage cans, etc...

Cons:

Cons - I have noticed that the better the course is the more people whine about things that they would let pass on other courses. Okay, I'll spare you. This course is in better shape for being brand new than many courses I have played that have been around for 10+ years.
I could point out that there are no steps going down some of the hills or up - by the time you play this course I bet he has fixed that.
I could point out that after you climb out of the abyss (a trail that goats would get winded climbing) there isn't a bench to sit on. There again he has plans for strategically placed benches, just hasn't gotten them in yet. Like I said - on other courses you wouldn't dare to mention picayunish stuff like this.

Other Thoughts:

Let's review class. Like I said it is fair, fun and challenging - what more do you want from a really good Disc Golf Course? As a special note, he mentions good footwear and water. No kidding - take my advice and wear shoes with a supported sole (like boots). If you wear your Chuck Taylors out there I guarantee the bottoms of your feet will hurt tomorrow - this is chisled out of the Missouri limestone and the course is mostly rocks, trees and creeks.
In closing I would like to reiterate this course is only one month old. There are plans for improvements (stairs, benches, and further refinement) but is still highly playable. A round of 10 will take you over an hour to play so gauge your time accordingly. This will be totally awesome when it is complete with all 18 baskets - when it is, I'll probably move my rating up to 4.5.
