Dunham Doesn't Suit My Fancy 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Dunham Rec. Center DGC is not like any other course in the Cincinnati area, with it's open fairways and steep elevation drops, both being inherited from the small golf course that used to be here. Given how small the area is that the course is on, I can see why a golf course would not survive on this property.

Dunham makes great use of the elevation, starting with hole one. Going straight downhill, it's a fun shot to start your round. For the remainder of the course, you will be throwing uphill, downhill again, and at baskets placed on steep slopes.

Along with the elevation changes, the whole course is situated on top of a hill, which can bring lots of wind into play. This gives you a great chance to try and learn your discs and practice putting through the wind.

Tee signs are adequate, baskets are solid Discatchers, tee pads are turf, although some are short, and some are a little lumpy. The amenities aren't anything special, but decent enough.

Being a course that is mostly open, there are still a good amount of holes that have some shot shaping requirement. However, this is still an open course, so a lot of holes give you many options to choose from.

Cons:

Dunham is a fun play, but does not have any qualities that make it above average. There are not any true par 4s or 5s, and most of the holes are reachable in one shot with the exception of a few holes that should still be easy threes.

The tall grass during the summer months eats discs, and I've seen shots go only 5 feet off the fairway and never return. During the winter, the grass is dead and makes finding shots much easier.

There is a fence on the edge of a few holes that if a disc goes over it, you won't see it again. Either because it's in a dense forest, or in a sketchy apartment complex. I'm not sure which one I would rather venture into.

Other Thoughts:

Dunham is a decent course to test out some new discs, or learn to play in the wind, but whenever someone suggests that we play this course, I try and get us to go elsewhere, usually to no avail.

As far as Cincinnati area courses go, this one is pretty low on my list, but if you live in the area, it is still worth checking out. At the end of the day, it's still a disc golf course with fun shots to be thrown.
