Home Field Advantage 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easy beginner course but still rough on professionals. Plenty of shade for the summer game. Regulars are throwing 6 days a week and the atmosphere is awesome.

Cons:

No drainage on 8 or 9. I have been through plenty of times only to find standing water and thick mud.

Other Thoughts:

Very enjoyable course. It is less than a mile away from my place so I frequent the park and have somewhat mastered the tee shots. Good ace opportunities on 1, and 7. My only two aces came on number 7.

Not too Impressive 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 18, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice park setting in a great neighborhood. Clean bathrooms and a lovely playground for the kids. Easy to navigate. Each Tee is marked by a stand with the number on it. First Time Friendly! Challenging wooded course.

Cons:

9 holes. No signs or maps. No Tee boxes, only tee markers with some missing. There are posts at every Tee but no signs for distance or direction. Poor drainage after rain. Hole 8 and 9 were very mushy and muddy after a week of dry weather.

Other Thoughts:

OK, its a nice small course. For its size, it can be very challenging on your wood game. Hurts if you're a Grip and Rip type of player. A huge Soccer field to practice your drives on while walking to the first tee, much like Dorey. But like a little kid brother of Dorey, Dunncroft is nice but no substitute for the original. It plays like a small version of Dorey Park, but Dorey has much more variety and 18 baskets rather than only nine. Is it challenging? Yes, due to a winding creek that comes into play on most holes and a thick wooded playing area, but again you can get this (minus the creek) at Dorey and as an overall Disc Golf good time, it was a bit underwhelming. If I lived nearby, it would be a great quick nine. Bring out the kids and let them and the wife play at the playground while I throw a quick (alone should finish in under 30 minutes) round and its all good. But to drive a distance and hope for a great day out of DG, I'd have to say pass on Dunncroft. I'm being kind. The group I played with were much harsher on their critique, but most of what they had to say could not be printed.

Fav Hole: 7) A Tight Ace attempt through tough trees and crossing the creek.

Not Up to Par 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 21, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The first noticeable pro to this course is that its in a nice neighborhood. The soccer field provides a nice place to throw a few practice drives, so long as there isn't a game going on. The baskets (and many hazards) are marked with orange paint, which makes them a little easier to find. The course is very wooded, with some holes requiring specialty shots that you don't usually have to throw at other area courses (Bryan, Gillies). There are several tight tunnel shots for added difficulty. Playing over the stream is nice, as are the changes in elevation - all but 1 or 2 of the holes play either uphill or downhill.

Cons:

While playing in the woods has it's advantages, this course is a bit much. The fairways are hardly fairways at all - more like paths through the woods. Holes like this can be fun to play but some variation would make for a more enjoyable game. Playing here will improve your short game for sure, but you will be hitting a lot of trees. The course was also quite muddy - it would be best to wait a few days after a heavy rain.

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad park. I'm sure I'll play here again, but mostly because it's not too far out of the city. All things considered, though, if you want to play at a nice wooded course it is worth it to make the longer drive out to Dorey where the holes are more varied and you can play a full 18.

UPDATE (4/12/09): I have been back to this park several times since writing this review, and today was the best experience I've had. Even just yesterday it was very muddy, but it has since dried out and I found it much more enjoyable. Having become familiar with the holes helps as well - this course is really great for your short game. There actually are some chances to rip long drives, provided you can make it around the many obstacles. Playing here more has really improved my drive placement, and my scores here are much better now!

Pros:

Near many places in the west End of Richmond, plays quickly and has ample signage for the most part Great practice course or for first timers.

Cons:

Near a neighborhood where people walk their dogs throughout the course, floods easily.

Other Thoughts:

Favorite Hole: #8 - Great hole way out in front of you with elevation sloping down towards the hole.

Dunncroft- Castle Point Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 6, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A lot of streams, challenging trees shots, and easy baskets.

Cons:

Only nine holes, but more are coming soon. It's easy to land your disk in a stream. Though it is easy to get it out.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very nice little course, not hard. A brisk throw in the woods. There's even a soccer field next to it for you to warm up at. The tees are very well marked and the baskets are very nicely placed. I live next to this course and enjoy it often. It's not physically challenging, like Bryan Park. It's in Henrico County, so it's set up is similar to Dorey Park, which is a favorite of mine. Though you may need to plan out some of your shots, this course is all good fun.

Wooded Course in Richmond's Far West End 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 3, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Interesting holes around and over the stream, benches and places to hang your bag at most holes, pro and am tee pads, nice paver tees.

Cons:

Only nine holes, all in the woods.

Other Thoughts:

You have to cross a wide field to get to the first hole at Dunncroft-Castlepoint, so it's a good idea to warm up by flinging your long range drivers from the parking lot to the first tee. You won't get any more looks at a truly open, let 'em fly shot at this nature trail style course.

That caveat aside, however, the course at Dunncroft-Castlepoint (DC) is an interesting little course that has improved greatly over the years. Once a very tight, very challenging woods course, the current course is only nine holes, entirely in the woods, but mostly reasonable in its challenges and making good use of the natural landscape. Only the first hole is overly wooded, but it's also very short; after that control is still key, but the fairways are well defined and realistic. The course plays around a good stream, and four or five of the holes are made more interesting by the stream. In addition, the course plays downhill (to the stream), uphill (away from the stream), and has a couple of flat holes (along the stream). Finally, DC now features nice tee pads and short and long tees for eight of the nine holes. So in reality, if you have the control, you can break out the long range drivers for the long version of a few holes. Veer off course and you may suffer, however. DC is still an unforgiving course.

Overall, Dunncroft-Castlepoint is still a course for if you need some practice or a change of pace. The short tees are good for beginners to intermediate; the longs are more intermediate to advanced. The course demands control throughout, features a decent bit of up and down, and the stream and the holes incorporating the stream are certainly unique to the area. The course scores well for amenities and playability and is well worth checking out.

Favorite Hole - #7 - straight shot down narrow alley crossing bends in the stream for most of fairway.

Wooded course near a school 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 13, 2007 Played the course:once

Pros:

A wooded course. A creek winds through the course and comes into play on 7 holes.
Hole 1 is about 110 ft. and hole 9 is about 520 ft.

Cons:

In places it can be a little tough to navigate. Tee 8 is a long walk from basket 7. From #8 basket follow a short dirt path to gravel path and make right to find 9's tee.
It's either on school property or at least right next to a Middle school and there has been some vandalism of the chains on a few baskets.

Other Thoughts:

Long tees Course Level = Difficult White or easy Blue.
