Pros:
This course is like an ogre, uh onion, it has layers. An earlier review mentioned the schizophrenic nature of this course and it does ring a little true. To start with there are actually 3 parks, 2 club kiosks, 2 parking areas, and 5 different course configurations here along with 27 baskets and a multitude of tees. There is:
One ADA Compliant Wheel-Chair accessible 9 Hole Playing from East La Loma Park
One 18 Hole "Scenic" Course Playing from Scenic Dr. entrance to Pamela Monterosso Park.
One 27 Hole "white" Course Playing from East La Loma Park Parking Lot
One 27 Hole "white" Course playing from Scenic Dr. entrance to Pamela Monterosso Park.
One 18 Hole "Modesto 10,000" Gold Course Playing from East La Loma Park
The ADA compliant 9 hole is a small flat course on very hard compacted soil, that is said to be wheelchair accessible, I would tend to have my doubts. The holes are mostly wide open and short, too short to create any kind of challenge to anyone but a beginner.
The 18 hole scenic is a little more challenging with the creek coming in as obstacle on a few holes and a lot more trees making up fairways. The holes are still a little on the short side with this being more of an intermediate rec course. The hard compacted soil allows for easy skips and rollers, making for a fun throw.
The 27 hole courses are basically a compilation of the ADA and the scenic, and directions differ depending on where you start playing from East La loma you would play 1-8 of the ADA course and then walk past the basketball courts and playground and play 12-18, 1-11 of the "scenic" course and the return back across the courts over to the tennis court and play hole 9. Conversely if you were playing from Scenic Dr. you would play holes 1-11 and then walk past the courts to play hole 9, and then 1-8 of the ADA course before walking back to finish hole 12-18.
The 18 hole gold course referred to as the "Modesto 10,000" is also a combination of the two courses starting from La Loma parking lot. It is a Par 71 with 3 par 5's, 11 par 4's, and 4 par 3s. It is very much designed for competitive play, and this is where it excels.
All of this plays out in three different parks in the Dry Creek Regional Parkway, with the 5 mile Peggy Messinger trail winding its way through. The kiosk at scenic dr is actually in Pamela Monterosso Park, and when you cross the creek you are in Thousand Oaks Park and of course you then play down to East La Loma Park, which of course has its own kiosk. The parkway has restrooms and water fountains, along with playground, and basketball and tennis courts.
Cons:
Flat. This whole piece of land is almost perfectly flat, with the creek canyon and small depression in the middle being the only elevation changes. One of the tees for the gold course uses a small hill to try and pick up about 15 foot elevation.
Gopher Holes. As others have mentioned there are holes everywhere out here, they are big and deep, and real ankle sprainers.
Navigation. Because there are so many courses and options to play those courses navigation gets a bit tricky. Most of the signs are the typical DGA fiberglass two sided signs that get broken. Although most of the left sides are intact, a lot of the rights are broken. Because the 27 hole courses vary depending on where you start it is difficult to know exactly where you are on the tee signs, although people have written numbers on them. Navigation for the 18 hole gold is even more difficult , the holes are marked by small 4X4 posts in the ground with a small metal plaque on them. The posts are only maybe a foot tall and difficult to spot. Most of the tees for the gold are the same as the other courses but a few are behind or pushed off uphills and have their own separate tees and these can be difficult to spot. One of these days I will map out the gold and post it under the links , or if someone beats me to it, I would welcome it.
Open. Although trees line the parkway they are the large 100 year oaks that tower above leaving most of the holes feeling fairly flat and open, especially with the short distances between holes and the relatively straight shots to baskets.
Multi-Use. This course plays on a narrow strip of land between houses and the creek with a multi-use trail running down most of the center of it, so you will often have to hold for bikers and joggers.
Baskets. No indicator to which basket you are throwing at.
Water Hazard. Creek is going to be a pro to some and a con to others.
Proximity to Houses. Fences can be a little to close to comfort on some holes.
Grass. Can get tall with foxtails, so be prepared with pants or gators.
Ugly. This courses scenic appeal has disappeared with the CA drought, leaving the area feeling dry , desolate, and arid even with a creek running right through it.
Other Thoughts:
There is a lot here with a lot of options on how to play it. From beginner to pro you should find something for everyone to enjoy. Overall I find the course about average in quality of throwing. The 27 hole format is a very nice intermediate rec course, but I think the 18 hole gold during tournament play is where this course really is going to shine. While the other courses are two short and open this ones length and openness is just right.
