My fav so Far 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 3, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is going test you to see how well you can shape lines.

Three tee pads per hole, which is great. Make it a great place for families to come and play together.

Favorite holes -
2 - Throwing over small stream/valley to basket.
4 - Signature hole, with old trailers. Just an obstacle that you don't see often. With the basket down behind trailers.
5 - Only open shot at ERP. But gives you a good shot at an ace run.
8 - Hole with sharp dog leg to the right, but it has a tunnel if you dare to try and get through. (I always try, but end up getting in trouble)
12 - Pinestraw pond OB. Short but again another Ace Run.
13 - Tunnel Shot - Basket is just staring at you!
15 - Blind Basket, behind hill. (My first birdie here!)

The other holes here are great but those listed here are my faves. Also a great course to play when busy with other Disc Golfers, seems to have the best flow of any other course in the area. Each hole is easy to navigate.

Cons:

Kudzu!! -- this is really for the summers, and spring. Disc's can be a little harder to find. But not a reason to not come play this course. Fairways are clear and most trees should stop your disc before going to far!

Other Thoughts:

This a a great course. Mulitple tee positions, and most pins are easy to see or find for each hole. I also like how this course has tees that are to the left, right and straight away. My favorite course so far!

Tough but Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Lots of different tee and approach shots necessary, quiet wooded area, several really fun holes.

Cons:

Lots of trees.

Other Thoughts:

While there are a ton of trees and some really tight fairways, I feel the course is fair in terms of difficulty.
Once you play the course a couple times you figure out the holes where its worth laying up over the alternative of trying to bomb one off the tee and take the risk of ending up in the woods. There are still several holes where you can easily allow yourself a birdie opportunity.

Good, Tough, Technical Course in ATL 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 7, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's good for improving your finesse and technique. I've become a bigger fan of the course and have really been able to improve my game by playing here.

Cons:

It can get pretty busy but you can start on 10 pretty easily to avoid the crowds and the lines. 9 and 18 end up in pretty much the same area.

Other Thoughts:

I reviewed this a couple of years ago and I was not too pleased with the trees. I've now edited my review of this course because, like the trees there, it's grown on me a bit. I enjoy playing here now and I find it much more challenging than some other places around ATL. It is up there as one of my preferred places to have a round or two.

Nicely Wooded Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is situated in a scenic and secluded wooded area in the back of the park. The holes make good use of the trees and elevation in the park which in turn places a premium on your ability to throw a variety of shots. If you like technical courses this is probably your best bet in Atlanta, while the fairways are tight I would not call any of them unfair.

As others have mentioned hole 4 really is the standout hole. The trailers provide a unique challenge because you will be in a world of trouble if you end up between them or under them. Additionally the hole is nice and long but still requires you to hit a couple of gaps as you meander down the fairway.

I really appreciate the fact that there are 3 teepads on each hole. The reds are great for beginners or people looking to get in a quick round. The blues are a good step up in difficulty(both longer and more challenging shots). Finally the black tees will still provide a challenge to even the most experienced of player.

There are nice concrete tees and tee signs unfortunately they are only for the black tees. Additionally the holes seem to flow together in most places to make for easy navigation. I also really like that both the front nine and back nine begin and end at same place. This makes it easy to just play nine or to use the restroom midround.

Cons:

During the spring and summer Kudzu can become a major problem on holes 3 and 4. I often find myself throwing very conservatively to avoid a lost disc.

Some of the holes run too close to each other and can cause problems with an errant tee shot. Hole 17 stands out to me in this regard since you can end up on several different holes with a bad shot.

The navigation is a bit unclear in between holes 8 and 9. I have seen quite a few people end up on hole 16 instead of 9.

The next is only a con for some people:
*LOTS OF TREES

I love all the trees however I have a friend who just likes to air the disc out and he hates this course with a passion. So be forewarned that this course is not for you if you like wide open courses.

Other Thoughts:

One of the most satisfying courses in Atlanta. I don't ever get sick of playing this course and find that it is great in the summer due to all of the shade. This course really helped to improve my game by requiring me to learn how to control my disc and learn a variety of shots.

humbling and fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 28, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice layout with multiple tee pads, although not all are concrete.

Tight wooded course with some (2-3?) holes that you will able to open it up on. Other than that it is a tough technical course! I was 2 over after 15 and ended up 10 over on one round. This course makes you use all of your shots.

The trailer hole is great! I got caught behind them and "had to" make a hammer throw over them to land at the basket. too much fun!!

There are tough 2nd shots but only a few places to get into real trouble. (I played in Dec, foliage may differ in summer)

Multiple tee pads only add to the pleasure.

Cons:

A little straight. Take a comet, shark or impact with you. Two holes are a little ridiculous and you will need a deities help to get to the pin.

Other Thoughts:

Bring your "A" game and be willing to be humbled, but it is a wonderful course and worth driving a ways to play. Mix it with JP mosely and you have a great combo. Too bad they are not closer together.

Classic woods course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

A pretty walk in a mixed evergreen and deciduous forest, with a nice mix of right and left turning holes, and a few straight pokes. There's some gentle elevation changes that are used pretty effectively. The fairways are snug without being tight, just about perfect for my tastes. I even enjoyed the hole with the 'retired' truck trailer farm, they definitely provide a unique risk/reward proposition (I wouldn't want to try to retrieve my disc from on top of one so I chickened out).

I had a little trouble finding my way on the front but finally noticed some next tee signs on the back 9. When I went back by some of the holes from the front I noticed them there too so you just have to be on the lookout for them. The course is well cleared so I didn't have any trouble finding discs that took an unfortunate kick off trees. The layout seemd to use most of the available property but the holes didn't seem jammed on top of one another so I guess I'd say the spacing was good.

Cons:

I'm partial to woods courses so there isn't a whole lot that I'd change. If they had a few more acres to stretch out some holes more and more drastic elevation changes it would be close to perfect but the designers can't do much about that.

Other Thoughts:

I stopped in on my way to the airport before heading home and was in a bit of a hurry, so I played the short tees. I noticed two other sets of tees, and paid particular attention to the black tees as I was walking by, they looked challenging and are the reason I gave this course an excellent instead of very good. When I get back down there that will be the first course I hit and I'm playing the longs. I was there the week after the course hosted the Atlanta Open and the course was immaculately groomed, that's a sign of a strong local club.

East Roswell is a very well put together course. Tournament caliber with 3 tees Red-Blue-Black (Black being the pro). A variety of throws will be used to score well here. Pins change every hole with distance variations and right to left. Excellent course.

Cons:

Can be frustrating on an off day. Rough can be pretty thick on some holes. Don't let the semi truck trailers on hole 5 scare you!

Technical & Tight 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

East Roswell is a tight, technical and fair woods course. The fairways are clear and defined. Some holes (like 2, 5, 12 & 13) have multiple lines to take. Three sets of tee pads per holes allows for any level of play (Pro/Black pads are cement). The course has elevation changes on several of the holes and all the baskets are in well thought out positions.

Cons:

The other tee pads (Red & Blue) are gravel/natural and do get washed out after rain storms every once in a while. I wouldn't recommend playing the course right after a rain storm. A few of the Discatcher baskets are slightly damaged but not too bad.

Other Thoughts:

Two signature holes are 4 & 16. Hole 4 you get to throw over a few trailers in the middle of the fairway. Not something you see too often. Hole 16 is the equalizer of the course. Sometimes you can be having a good round and end up getting a 5 or 6 on this hole very easily if you don't play it safe and keep it on a fairway.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Three tee pads per hole (Red, Blue, Black) with increasing levels of technicality and distance. The Red and Blue tees often have multiple options, especially the Blue Tees (which were my favorite). The course is very easy to follow once you find the first tee, which is at the edge of the woods by the kiddie playground to the right of the parking lot. There are bathrooms by the parking lot, and a nearby Kroger for ice and supplies.

The course winds through the woods with nice elevations changes and mostly well defined fairways. There is a nice mix of short finesse holes and some long crushes, but the trees place a premium on control.

Cons:

Hole 4 is a blind tee shot with a high probability for losing a disc. The long (cement) tee pads are a bit repetitive, and place a premium on throwing the same righty long straight/slight flip turnover fade to the right blind tee shot. (But now that I think about it, that is a great shot to learn, so I just raised my rating of this course to a four). The basket of 17 is too close to the fairway of 11.

Other Thoughts:

The Red and Blue tees provide a completely different look at most of the holes, and the Blue Tees are especially challenging, with some highly technical controlled turnover shots for right handed players. I would play this course on a regular basis if I lived in Atlanta.

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 9, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Divese in the type of shots that are needed

Cons:

Hole 4 and the trailers. Otherwise known as the pink elephant in the room. people either love them or hate them, but I believe they are only a hospital trip away.

The crushed gravel teepads can become uneven and cumbersom to tee off from.

Other Thoughts:

There are three sets of tees from each hole. The shorter ones don't necessarily mean the easist and vice versa from the long. The course is not officially 'on-the-books' as a permenat addition to the City of Roswells parks. Future developments in the city are threats to the current course design

Pros:

If you like trees this is the place for you. Multiple tee boxs allow everyone from newbis to grizzled pros get the challenge they are looking for. You will use every shot in your bag and probably have to make a few up on the spot due to some of the positions you will find yourself in. The new signs are great I wish all courses had signs like these. You get information on the hole you are about to play and what direction to look for the next tee box. Very helpfull. Innova baskets with the bright yellow stip at the top help with visability. The new tee pads for the black tees are great and boy are they a challenge. There is elevation change throughout the course, plenty of variation no risk of getting bored here. The course is very well maintained and clean. Plenty of benchs and trash cans available. the course itself is pretty well isolated from the rest of the park. All the people I have encountered here were very friendly. Put this course into your must play in Atlanta list you will not be dissapointed.

Cons:

There is a sign warning you not to leave valuables in your car. I have not had any issues at all.

Other Thoughts:

This course is the place that the local landscapers and tree cutters dump their wood chips. This is a great boon to the folks maintaining the course. I ran into one of the trucks on their way out. You never know what you will see disc golfing!
This course is very fun, and also very challengeing. Don't expect to score well first time out. Course knowledge really helps here.

very nice course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 28, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a very nice predominantly wooded course. It's an easy flowing compact course with lots to offer. You'll even get the feeling of hiking in the woods on a few holes.

The course itself has lots to offer. To begin with, there are three tee pads at each hole. This gives you plenty of choices in terms of length and difficulty. Reds and blues are great for both beginners and the seasoned disc golfer in my opinion. Reds are the shortest and blues are slightly longer with slightly a slightly different look at the baskets. Both give the experienced players a good choice to mix things up depending on their mood that day and both will teach the beginner a lesson or two. Some argue that the reds can be just as challenging as the blues. These tees pad are crush run gravel pads that are in satisfactory condition. The black/pro tees are a great option too. The nice thing about the black tees is that they have great concrete pads. These can be intimidating if you are a new player but especially enjoyable if you're an advanced player.

No matter what you decide you'll find a good mix in terms of lengths, slight to moderate dog legs, elevation changes, and obstacles that will challenge you and keep you on your toes. If you are used to playing shorter tees the new concrete will tempt you to stretch you skills. All in all anyone can find a great challenge here.

There are a few trash cans and benches scattered around. This course has really nice signs posted at the black pads too. Make sure to notice the distances as you pass them if you're playing the shorter pads. Unfortunately, there has been some mild vandalism on a couple of the signs but no big deal as far as play is concerned. The flow seemed to make perfect sense based on the land. And you should have no trouble navigating the course. (Pay attention to the map at the 4 to 5 transition) The Innova baskets are in good shape. This course/park is feels clean and very safe.

I like the fact that number One, nine, and eighteen all start/end at the same place. It is at the entrance of the course and is right by the parking lot. Therefore a quick run to the car and for whatever reason is quite convenient. Also you'll appreciate the nearby bathrooms and water fountain beside the pavilion. The Pavilion is also a welcomed convenience during tournaments.

The Roswell Disc golf Club ( www.roswelldiscgolf.org ) is very involved with the course and it shows. If you run into any of them on the course they will be happy to guild you around or answer any questions. Look for them when you're out playing.

Cons:

Well the semi-trailers on hole number four are definitely unusual and I can see why people don't like them. To be honest though, I don't mind them at all. They seem to add a little something different to the course. The fact of the matter is that ideally they should not be there. I think they just used the land that was available. After you play it a couple of times you just simply play through and don't think too much about it. It is however a little distracting the first time. You can make it fun if you try.

I've heard complaints about the crush and run gravel pads on red and blue are not the greatest. Again I don't mind them but I know pads are a big point of contention with some/most disc golfers. Some are in better shape than others. I saw signs of erosion and little revines where people repeatedly took the same path down the pad. I have seen worse. Other than that, this is pretty solid course.

Other Thoughts:

This is overall one of my favorite Georgia courses. It is in a nice part of town, the park is clean, and is easy to get to. It is only a couple of miles off Hwy 400. If you are from out of town and looking to play a few courses, you should try heading north on 400 for several more miles to Central Park when you finish East Roswell. It is also right off the highway and it is a good course. You could also head west to Wills Park and Sequoyah Park.

One of the Best in Atlanta Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 11, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Set apart from the rest of the park. Very wooded, provides shade from sun or rain. Variety of lengths with lots of terrain changes. Three sets of tees. Red is still plenty challenging for an intermediate. We've just moved back to the blues, forget black tees unless you are really good / pro level. Course "loops" so 9 and 18 are both by 1 and 10 (near the parking lot). Real bathrooms (not port-a-potty), so you can wash up afterward. You need all the shots here to score. I've played here more than 50 times, and I'm still discovering new lines on certain holes. Nice wood chip fairways, and fairly well marked. Best part is it's self contained, quiet, and away from rest of park. This course is so narrrow, it makes most other courses seem easy, or even boring if they are open courses. I learned to play here, so everything else seems easier.

Cons:

Some holes seem to have "random" trees in the fairway. Can be very narrow, with luck coming into play. People complain about the crushed stone tee pads, but they seem OK to me. Some holes are a little funky or just plain hard, like number 4, the "trailer hole". Could use some "next tee" directional signs. I find myself often directing new players to a particular hole.

Other Thoughts:

I've played about 40 courses all around the country, and I'm proud to call this my home course. Its always challenging, sometimes frustrating. I'll go way under par at a different, more open course, and then come back to my home course for some "humble pie". Note, Fulton county just passed a library expansion bill which has a proposed library taking up at least some of this course. Site would take out the dreaded "trailer hole", possibly 2 or three others. Don't know the exact plans for the course, assuming the library goes ahead. You can see the proposed library sign at the corner of Fouts Rd. and Holcomb Bridge. Roswell Park Police are often patrolling, and are serious about contraband. No alcohol allowed in Georgia public parks. Same powers as regular police. Be good or be careful.

A change of pace. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 16, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Offers 3 distict levels of ability

In the woods make a great walk in the summer.

A great technical course that demands your absolute attention.

Offers a change of pace that is unlike anything else in the area. If you want a new expirience get out to ERP

Holes 2 and 6 were absolutely breath taking and beautiful. You need to go on a nice sunny day as the pics above, just dont do those holes justice.

Course is marked well and easy to get around, but locating baskets can be a challenge.

Cons:

Huge mulch piles are ugly and provide an unwanted habitat for snakes.

Some of the kudzu is scary. Can lose a disc a just a shade off the fairway.

Back 9 seems lack luster with the exception of 2-3 holes. Kinda feels like some holes were squeezed in and some others just feel repetitive.

Like the other reviews state, some holes Par might want to be reviewed as some seem almost unfair. Almost like a novelty, difficult just to be difficult.

I don't think ERP will crown the best golfer in tournament play, just best golfer that round. I think luck kinda has a little more leverage at ERP than surrounding courses. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Other Thoughts:

ERP is an extreme challenge from the black tees that IMO should only be challenged by advanced if not pro players. The shots the black tees call for, most Am's and lower 950 rated players just don't have. I made this mistake the first time here, thinking that since I play black and gold at JP that I'd do fine here. I couldn't have been more wrong. This is a different kind of distance, I'm talking hallway like fairways that may dog leg twice or make one huge dogleg with some sporadic trees in the line.

That being said the blue tees were perfect and provided an experience that no other course in the area can provide. When I was told that the course was technical I immediately thought about Redan, wow how wrong could someone be.

East Roswell Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Range of difficulties with three available tees
-Great scenery
-Shaded and can be cool even in the Georgia summer
-Easy to follow course route
-Elevation changes keep the play interesting
-Though a variety of shots helps low scores, it is not required to get around most of the course.
-Wooded enclosure makes it feel private

Cons:

-Kudzu and woods result in many lost discs
-At first blush very few right doglegging holes, so little need to change from general right handed back hand throw
-On some holes it helps to have a spotter ahead to look for discs or you can spend a long time looking for them.

Other Thoughts:

A well laid out course. Front nine and back nine start and end in the same general area, making it easy to start from either side for your play. If you are waiting on someone it is easy to play 10 uphill and then 18 downhill next to it.

Friendly people playing also makes it nice. Lost discs are generally turned into the information center, located close to the course, and I have seen plenty of people call numbers on the backs of discs to let an owner know his/her lost disc was found.

I tend to hit plenty of trees, but still enjoy the course.

A wonderful course. Great to learn to play on or keep playing on. I haven't tired of it yet.

Very easy to get to. Exit east off of 400 to Holcombe bridge road, park will be down road on right with a sign pointing it out. Course starts at very back, entrance off of play ground.

A Must Play in Atlanta 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

One word, wow.
- Course is a true front nine, back nine. Tees 1 and 10 are just in from the playground. Play the first 9, take a break, get some water, then play the back nine. Too many courses are a giant circle and facilities are too far away.
- Variety. Uphill, downhill, dog legs right, dog legs left. Open ground, confined play.
- Three complete sets of tees. My daughter could play the reds, and on a couple of legs, she was nipping at my heels, praying I would choke.
- The little tips on the tee signs are helpful and amusing to boot.
- The fresh wood chips are great.
-It was a very hot Georgia day, but due to the shade of the course, it was pleasurable to play.

Cons:

- Missing some "next tee" markers
- Over all course map at the main sign would be nice.
- A few of the tee markers are in need of revision as it appears a few tees have been relocated since the signs were painted.

Other Thoughts:

The locals are very nice. We had one guy a hole ahead and one a hole behind. Lots of "clears" were hollar'd by all, and some good conversations took place while we were waiting for a basket to clear.

My home course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 15, 2007 Played the course:once

Pros:

Requires a real mix of shots to keep your score down -- will turn on you quickly if you let up. Control and shot selection count for more than distance, at least from the reds and blues (pro tees are black). Pin placement on several holes is brutal for anything that carries past the hole -- steep declines can result in a miss that takes two shots to recover from.

One positive that gets overlooked is that there's really no place on the course where you have to contend with walkers/runners/playgrounds, etc. The course is in woods that aren't used for any other park facilities, so you never have to worry about a bicyclist darting into a fairway and taking a drive to the forehead.

Cons:

Kudzu makes for intimidating rough, but it also makes finding discs a real challenge at times -- watch where every shot goes carefully, or expect to lose a disc or two. I've lost four in the last couple of months of playing twice a week or so, including a couple that I watched all the way down but couldn't find in the kudzu.

Crushed stone tee pads get pretty worn and uneven -- RRPD does its best but without concrete pads it's a losing battle.

The trailers along the left side of the 4th fairway make for an interesting obstacle, but I'm always concerned about who or what may take up residence in them, or in the nearby shed.

No pro shop or any other place to buy discs nearby; water fountains at pavilion near 1st/10th tees usually broken, so bring your own water (nothing stronger, however -- park police can be pretty aggressive about enforcing laws on possession/consumption of alcohol).

Other Thoughts:

Almost literally my home course -- pro tees for the 4th hole are less than 1000 feet from my front door. Roswell Recreation and Parks Dept. do a great job with maintenance and are very supportive. Several holes recently got new benches near the tee areas courtesy of a local teen who installed them as his Eagle Scout project.

Added 5/6/09: Since posting this review, I've taken on the role of secretary of the Roswell Disc Golf Club, which works with the Roswell Recreation and Parks Department to maintain and develop this and (we hope) other courses in Roswell. So I can't be considered an impartial judge at this point. However, this review was written nearly a year before the RRPD officially came into existence, so I wasn't biased by that when I wrote it.
