Explore the EOU Campus 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is spread through various parts of the Eastern Oregon University campus. Expect a two-mile walk to play this 5400' course (see cons).

Hole lengths vary from 180' to 500', with most in the 200' -
400' range. There are several ace runs and plenty of birdie opportunities.

The course is quite open and essentially flat, though good use is made of available mounds and slopes to create interesting
basket positions. Hole 18 is a good example of placing the basket on the narrow spine of a small levee, making it difficult to land the drive without skipping down one side or the other.

Infrastructure is solid with Mark II baskets, nice teepads made up of pavers, and new tee signs that are still being installed as of this review.

Cons:

There isn't a lot of challenge here. Most of the holes are open throws across grass to an exposed basket. So distance control is the main issue here. Where obstacles are in play they will generally be a single tree that requires a line to be shaped, or more often fences, parking areas and concrete sidewalk that play OB.

The course is built into a few different area of campus. This was necessary due to the room available in each spot. The result is some long walkouts on some holes. Hole 8 to 9 is 500', 15 to 16 is about the same, and returning to Hole 1 from the basket at 18 is 1600 feet. Navigation between areas can be tricky and I've uploaded maps of the new layout to the links section.

The strangest transition is between Basket 3 and the tee for Hole 4. The two are only about 100' apart, but are separated by a 6' tall chain link fence. Currently the only opening in the fence is 300' away. giving a 650' walk between the two. Hopefully a new gate is in the works.

The field containing Holes 3 - 6 is a curious mixture of marshy ground, tall grass, and prickly plants. The main challenge on these holes is disc finding, as the OB rough is rough indeed and seems designed to eat discs.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course exclusively during the summer, while school was out. I wonder how playable some holes would be if classes were in session. Hole 13 plays through what appears to be the main "mall" of the campus, and crosses several sidewalks, seating areas, flower beds, etc. I can't imagine how this could be played with students present.
