Plays like a much smaller La Mirada 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Plentiful Parking
Shade
Left-hand and right-hand friendly holes were evenly mixed.
Trees for added difficulty.
Free!

Cons:

No elevation change
Mostly short and moderate distance challenge
Hole #1 has a lot of pedestrians and parking lot overlap making for a difficult wait or shot selection.
Some signage is incomplete or inaccurate.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice public park that is free to play. It does look dated, but is well maintained and has a lot of friendly, local folks to help if you need it. The park is multi-use and this can complicate hole #1 since you are throwing toward the parking lot where a lot of people are in motion (tennis, DG, picnic, etc.). Do not be surprised if you have to wait at hole #1 a while for a clear moment to throw.
The course is not overly challenging, but does encourage some disc and shot selection to make it a worthwhile venture.
Overall, this course feels a lot like La Mirada (a few holes are right next to a busy street, multi-use, public, free, etc.) but is a lot shorter (18 holes only) and has less elevation and challenge to it.
If you are in the area I do recommend it. If you have the choice to go to La Mirada then I would suggest it instead.

Classic Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Free to play
- Plenty of parking
- Full 18 holes
- Large concrete tee pads
- Numbers tee signs with map of the multiple pin positions and their distances
- Well groomed fairways
- Easy to follow course flow
- In a public park, but devoid of non discing pedestrians

Cons:

- Most pin positions weren't long enough to really open up long drives
- Good amount of fairway/tee pad overlap, keep head on a swivel
- Baskets and tee signs were a little worn down. It was hard to read a few signs.
- High traffic course
- Not much punishment for errant shots

Other Thoughts:

Things are little run down at El Dorado, tee signs could use some TLC. The course itself is fairly flat, open, and most holes did not require a distance driver. That being said, it was one the most fun L.A. courses I have had a chance to throw. The first few holes are shorter and tighter, towards the end they get a little longer and wide open. I strolled up to the first teebox on a beautiful sunny day and latched on to a couple of locals. This was my third new course of the day and I really didn't feel like aimlessly wandering around like I did at the two courses I had played earlier. The funny thing is that they almost denied my request. The El Dorado course is very approachable for beginners and a fun chill course for advanced players.

Believe it or not, the fun doesn't have to end when the sun goes down. Parts of this course can also be played at night because of the way it's orientation around the well lit park tennis court. If you stick to the holes closest to the court you'll have enough light to play. Thanks for the course cheat code Mr. retired Japanese teacher (sorry I forgot your name), you the man!

Oldie But Goodie 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 30, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Update 1/8/18:

-low ceiling on many holes requires accuracy off the tee.
-locals adjust the pin positions probably once a month. Keeping things fresh.
-three "extra" holes
-good balance. almost equal amount of righty/lefty holes. i find myself using both a RHBH and RHFH shots at this course. Many holes you can throw either way.
-big mature trees

-large tee pads
-good basket quality with multiple pin positions
-large mature trees
-clean, nice & modern bathrooms a short walk from hole one
-two practice baskets
-nice signs with distances and rough maps of each hole
-ample parking, park is easy to find
-board that includes local events
-good use of out of bounds
-course is located in a multi use park wrapping around a tennis facility. Pro shop has disc golf supplies, however no maps when I visited.

Cons:

Update 1/8/18:

-trash, lots of trash left on the course. i try to pick up as much as i can during my rounds.

-creativity. holes are lacking creative punch. No signature hole here. very few holes over 400 feet, most are sub 350 feet and straight off the tee.
-cramped design. To fit 18 holes into the land here, the designers had to scrunch fairways together, none cross, but they come very close. At times, you'll be walking back up the previous fairway to get to the next hole. Mando's are used often to combat this.
-little to no elevation change, however designers use what is available
-only one or two trash cans, only one bench that I saw
-no number plates on the baskets. baskets are mixed, some Mach 2's some old Discatchers some new Dicatchers.
-as a result of missing number plates, it was tough to navigate for a first timer. Sometimes the closest tee is not your next tee. Sometimes the closest basket is not the basket for your hole. I did see a few directional arrows that we're helpful.

Other Thoughts:

Update 1/8/18:

now that i've lived in LB for a while and played 20+ california courses i have to say i'm glad this is my home course. the course has really grown on me for the reasons listed above. i've increased my rating by a full star.

Despite the con's above, I would def play here again. I understand the nuances with updating an older course, sometimes it is very difficult to make improvements to an older design.

I would not travel far to play here however, but if your in the area it's worth checking out. Bring the family, the park and California sunshine are wonderful.

Great course for first timers.

flat & shady 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Pretty much in the shade the whole time.
-Mix of tight and distance play.
-Manicured grass, little to no dust to deal with.
-Decent facilities.
-Very little pedestrian traffic for a course built in a public park.

Cons:

-Weird locals. Saw some homeless people playing with ultimate discs. Same day saw the lawn chair group sitting around watching you play while they drink and smoke.
- No elevation changes.

Other Thoughts:

The "pro shop" has a few dusty Innova discs. Discovering the World up by La Mirada on the other hand has every disc you could hope to find. More importantly the course is so much better. El Dorado is like a poor man's La Mirada. If you're paying a visit to LA go there.

Updated review of a good course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 7, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Tee signs. Baskets. Good park upkeep. Pro shop has only innova discs, which is an obvious bias, but whatever. Course layout was fun. Lots of tunnel and alley holes. Some mandatories are huge arrows nailed ten feet high on the trees. Free course maps at the proshop, where the help was friendly.

Cons:

There were groups of locals hanging out all over the course getting drunk on lawn chairs and just being in the way. it gave the imagery of skid row homeless community.

Other Thoughts:

Locals are still a mix of nice and rude. And still have potheads and drunks and what appears to be homeless people that play disc golf sitting on lawn chairs at tee 7 getting hight and drunk.

Course is still fun to play if you can keep a level head after hitting tree after tree in the tunnel baskets. I am going to visit more often.

Passing through LA 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Variety of holes. More tightly wooded on the front 9. Some longer holes to bust a good drive on. Fairly easy to navigate, only recall one hole where you needed to walk a ways to the next tee and there were no signs. Appears that they move the holes periodically but there was bare ground around the hole locations (which turned muddy).

Cons:

It was unexpectedly wet due to freak rain storm (in July?). This made the concrete tees muddy and slippery. Almost biffed it a couple of times. There are tee signs with distances, but they usually had only A-B-C distances but nothing to tell you which hole was in use. Had to guess at most of them based on drawings of the trees relative to the holes. Looked like a lot of transients hang out. Appeared to be a drug deal taking place in the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

You will always have clueless people in a public park who will wander among the holes. Overall it was fine for a Fri afternoon. I could imagine the course gets busy on the weekend since there seemed to be at least one or more players at every hole on a weekday. No elevation changes to speak of as the park is pretty flat, but the mature trees make it fairly challenging throughout. Locals were cool and offered to let me play through.

Eldo 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- El Dorado's park-style course plays alongside other park amenities such as tennis courts. The course is mostly grassy with mature trees throughout providing obstacles. A few mandatories further complicate matters.
- Alternative pin positions switch up holes from short, medium, and long placements and often drastically change the feel of any given hole. El Dorado is usually set up in a mix of half short, half long, although they are sometimes set all long or all short (they were all short during my round). Some of the long positions looked positively daunting for all but the biggest of arms.
- A decent mix of slightly more technical holes (requiring accuracy) and longer open holes (requiring distance).
- Brushed concrete tees in mostly great shape.
- Good signage w/ all pin positions listed (sometimes slightly inaccurate or misrepresentative but otherwise stellar).
- Decent flow despite being crammed into a smallish multi-use park area.
- Two practice baskets near hole one.
- Benches, trashcans, bathrooms, and water fountains throughout the layout. Tennis shop sells drinks and has clean bathrooms.
- This course is almost as flat as they thought the world to be in the 14th century, but the few rises in elevation are implemented to decent effect.

Cons:

- El Dorado can get crowded. Expect to be backed up on busy days.
- A few holes seem to crowd each other. Watch out for errant discs from other holes.
- Very little risk/reward (especially for the shorter pins). Not much here to force risky, high-reward shots.

Other Thoughts:

- Not the flashiest or most challenging of courses (especially with all pins short) but a very solid option for locals. Don't go out of your way to play here, but if you are in the area, El Dorado can easily satisfy the urge to disc. With the large trees and grassy fairways, the vibe El Dorado gives off is that of a bustling city course that does its best to give the illusion of playing in the country. It largely succeeds.

Nice park course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 14, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a nice socal park with grassy fairways and scattered trees. There are a couple small elevation changes and they're used as much as possible to add some interest to the course. The trees aren't all that dense, but they're used well to make a nice variety of hole shapes, with several good ow ceiling shots that force accurate drives. There is a nice variety of lengths on the course, from ace runs to a nice 700 footer with an alternate shorter basket if you don't want to play the long one.

The tees are concrete and in good shape, with plenty of room to throw. Most of the tee signs are there and show hole length and layout. The baskets are different on the front and back 9s, and both sets are showing their age, but all catch fine. There's a nice practice area by the parking lot.

Cons:

The park is very flat, with very similar terrain and foliage throughout, so it feels a bit repetitive despite the variety of hole shapes. A lot of the holes play through scattered enough trees that there are lots of possible routes, which takes a little away from the difficulty when an easy hyzer route is often present.

There are a few spots when you have to walk back down the fairway you just played to get to the next tee, which is a little bit of a hassle on a busy day. There are some holes that play pretty close to roads, sidewalks, and other park uses, which could make for some safety issues at times.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice park course, but has a bit of a repetitive feel. It's accessible for beginners with no real rough, though there is some length. More experienced players won't find too many real challenges, but it's not just a pitch n putt and has some nice holes. If you're in the area, this one's a good stop worth your time.

-Fairly easy to navigate and manage.
Great use of space
fun course

Cons:

-people picknicking on the course
-hole 18 runs right along a baseball diamond, and can be a bit crowded if there's a game
-some holes run just to the right of the street which can be tough
-not much elevational changes
-distance for pins on signs isn't very accurate
-can be crowded

Other Thoughts:

the course can be fun if there's not a lot of other distractions happening, which when i played, there were tons: pedestrians, picknickers, baseball players, slow large groups...

Well Manicured and Challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 13, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

• Disc Golf Exclusive area - everyone is aware on the course
• Well manicured grass and trees
• Good variety of distance in holes - one that plays to 700'
• Excellent use of elevation change - there isn't much but it is used to the fullest extent
• Good use of obstacles, including one small building that looks like a rebel base from Return of the Jedi (Hole # 6)
• Plenty of low ceiling shots with large trees all over the park
• Great local scene, and everyone is very friendly
• Nice tee signs
• Centrally located and freeway close

Cons:

• Baseball fields can interfere with the final few holes
• Pretty much flat, with limited elevation change
• Course flow isn't always intuitive - there are a few "walkbacks"
• The 700 foot hole is kind of like a monster truck... Some are OK with it but it is a bit excessive.

Other Thoughts:

El Dorado (or more commonly "Eldo") is a great L.A. area course that is easy to get to, and has a thriving local scene. Many proudly consider this their home course, and rightly so - it has history and beauty behind it. There is plenty of variety in angles, with both lefties and righties feeling right at home on the course.

Eldo is also a great Roller course, as several of the holes play very long coupled with a low tree ceiling. It is challenging when you need to air it out to get distance, but can't let your disc rise more than 15 feet or it will get eaten by the trees. Plenty of times I have gone into a game on this course thinking how easy the course was, and then was surprised how far over par I ended up.

The only real serious con here is the limited elevation change - it is a rather flat park. However, there are a few holes near the end of the course (especially # 15) that make use of a few sparse hills in the back part of the park. This course really isn't my cup of tea as I like more up and down and also more secluded - it is close to a few busy streets and definitely has a city feel. However, this course has a fantastic design and makes good use of the hand it was dealt with the park terrain. Highly recommended if you are playing the L.A. area, but I don't think this course is on the same level with La Mirada which is about 20 minutes away.

A great place for a relaxing round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Flat terrain, lots of trees, all in all an inviting place for a casual round or two. All the holes are fair. None are contrived, each poses its own particular problems for you to solve, and none of the problems are insoluble.

This course will also teach you the manifest benefits of keeping your disc LOW, since you have to shoot under trees pretty regularly, esp on the front 9.

The back 9 has some good distance holes but I still don't feel overwhelmed or intimidated even though I don't have huge D.

Cons:

Not much. I guess the only "con" is that there's nothing really spectacular about this course at all - no big elevation changes, no amazing scenery, everything's pretty middle-of-the-road.

Oh, the pro shop could hire some people who know discs, I guess, but at least they do have discs there (it's mainly tennis) as well as a lost-and-found.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to take newbies to. It's definitely more than a pitch-n-putt course but it won't eat a new player's lunch.

Variety of Distances
Mix of Shot Types
Cool Locals (Helpful & Very Friendly)
Very Well Maintained
Nice Tee Pads
Pro Shop On-Site
Ample Parking

Cons:

Older Baskets
Other Park Users Can Be An Issue (Non-Golfers)
Little to No Elevation Changes

Other Thoughts:

El Dorado Disc Golf Course is located in a large regional park just of Spring and Studebaker in Long Beach. There is parking near the first tee, right next to the public library.

The course plays through a nice grassy, flat park. Navigation is pretty straight forward with each tee close to the previous basket. There were a couple exceptions, the first being between holes 6 and 7, just head back towards the parking lot, along the path and the tee pad is just off the path on the right. The other being between holes 12 and 13. The tee pad for 15 is close by and we tried to skip a couple holes. The locals were able to point us in the right direction and it was smooth sailing from there on out.

The course has great variety, holes vary in direction and distance. There are multiple pins placements (A,B, and C) on each hole making it very easy to change this course up on a regular basis. In the shorts anyone can play with holes ranging from 201ft. to 366ft, while the longs range from 216ft. to just over 700ft making it tougher for even advanced players. Usually they are in mixed postions and have a nice balance for everyone to enjoy.

The course itself is fairly open, but there are enough large mature trees to force you to shape your shots on most holes. The first six holes play around the the corner of the park allowing the street to come into play on most of these holes adding another challenge. The course also plays around and beside other park amenities such as a ball golf course and tennis courts. Other park users seem pretty familiar with the course, rarely get in the way, and are always on the look out for flying discs which is a nice change from some of the parks in my area.

Overall this is a pretty good course, both beginners and advanced players will enjoy themselves. I would recommend this course to anyone that visits the Long Beach area and I would play it again if I get the chance, however if you only have time for one course in the greater LA area there are a couple I would choose over this one.

Straight and True SoCal Park Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Upkeep, trees, easy to follow

Cons:

Most every hole is a straight line.

Other Thoughts:

El Dorado is a large municipal park and the disc golf course is a classic park course. It's totally flat and plays among numerous large and well established trees. With one exception, the course is solidly par 3, and most every hole is a straight line from tee to basket. While certainly not a woods course, there's plenty of trees for your disc to hit, and those with a roller in their bag will do better due to the low ceilings these old sprawling trees provide.

While the course as a whole lacks any truly distinguishing features, overall it's perfectly picturesque, a nice looking course in a nice neighborhood. The only problem is a few holes do play too close to a busy road, and the course would benefit from having at least a few fairways that weren't straight lines. The most notable feature is low ceilings; you need a solid roller or a good low and tight shot to excel out here, especially on the front nine. And while I couldn't pick a favorite, there's not a bad hole out here. Consistency is the name of the game for El Dorado; consistently straight, consistently well maintained, consistently par 3 (but on the long side), consistently easy to figure out, and often low. It's a good course for beginners and experts alike, and well worth investigating among the DG courses of Southern California.
