that's an active street!

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

pretty course with plenty of trees forcing you to shape shots or get bogies. two "bonus" holes 12B and 15B just for fun. this course is part of a massive park on the north side of long beach.

Cons:

get used to spring and studebaker, two very active streets right next to you for several holes...and i mean RIGHT NEXT TO YOU. watch a drive go over the bicycle and 2nd lane of traffic before hooking back into the fairway.

lot of people play this course and it is still an active park so careful of pedestrians. could use an extra bathroom.

Other Thoughts:

no real elevation change

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 26, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Parking is always adequate and restrooms are nearby. There are (2) practice putting cages which is great for practicing putting and approach shots. Great trees and tunnel shots on the front nine, which can really make you hone in on your tunnel shots. #7 hole is very tough with the thick and low tree canopy. I like hole #8 and it's high Hyzer over the trees shot.
Very strategic front nine. Love it. The back nine is my favorite as it is longer, opens up with less trees and really compliments the back nine as it is so different. I like the 10th & 11th tee off holes as they are open and I especially like the elevated tees at the 13th & 16th tees. With the lights of the tennis courts, lights around the walkways and baseball field near 18th hole, you can actually play most of the back nine in the dark. I also like the 21 hole layout and play that all the time now.

Cons:

Crowded on weekends. Not crowded on Friday afternoons and weekdays. Watch out throwing discs into the golf course on 12B & 15B.

Other Thoughts:

Really like the added 19th hole. Great to have another hole which is easier and gives you a positive ending.

Flat Park Style Golf at this Local Favorite 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Decent size parking lot. It's shared with the tennis club, library and park at large so it's often close to ful but ample parking on street just outside the lot.
- Bathroom by the parking lot (not the greatest and doesn't have soap but still)
- water fountains and water bottle filler at the start of the course
- Full 18 hole course with bonus holes and a good amount of length. Recently played the Eldo open which got 23 holes out of the layout
- Front 9 and back 9 have lots of character--low ceiling and tighter lines on the front. Longer, more wide open holes to really huck on the back 9.
- Lots of mandos, probably on 75% of the holes. Not all are really in play but some create demanding lines
- OB with fences and paths also add to difficulty and safety
- Flow is decent, the different color baskets help you keep your bearings from front 9 to back 9.
- Usually a good crowd of locals hanging next to the 1st and 2nd tee smoking doobies and pounding brews. I guess this is kind of a neutral thing but I always see this as a pro as the course has a good community.
- Greens are somewhat guarded, usually a tree or two in the way to make things kind of interesting. Great use of limited elevation though, lots of baskets on hills or on the edge of slopes.
- Great course for improving your approach and putting game as the holes are on the longer side for the most part and there is usually trouble in the way. Holes #10 and #11 are the only exceptions I can think of where you just through a wide open shot to the basket.
- Great course for tournaments between the parking, close bathrooms, and room for hanging out.
- A couple of practice baskets

Cons:

- #4, #5, #12B, #12C all play directly next to the road. Very easy to shank a drive and hit a car or pedestrian
- Quite a variety of basket quality, seen a bunch of cut throughs and spin outs on these rusty chains. Front 9 baskets felt kind of narrow and didn't have a band at the top.
- Very busy park with a ton of pedestrians and tennis players who often walk through fairways
- Crowds on the weekend
- Only one elevated basket, could use some more creative heights and pin positions.
- Hard to say if this is a pro or a con... a chunk of the holes are long enough that unless you're an advanced player, a decent drive won't really reward you. You're still going to have to throw a 100+ ft upshot to the basket.

Other Thoughts:

Fairly flat park style course in Long Beach area featuring 18+ holes at a variety of lengths and difficulties. Course gets lots of attention from locals and has been around for a while as it's one of SoCal OG's along with La Mirada, Oak Grove, Huntington Beach and Morley Field.

Decent course for most difficulties though novice players will likely struggle with the length of the holes and the low hanging trees. The layout makes excellent use of the elevation and available greenery at the park. While it's not a tightly wooded course the placement of the trees still demands decent lines. Solid amenities between parking, water, bathrooms, and proximity to the highway.

Great Socal course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 9, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

El Dorado is another example of a park in southern California that does a great job mixing disc golf with other activities. The park is well maintained, clean, and friendly to disc golfers. The course itself features 18 holes with alternating pin positions, concrete tees, and a variety of shots required to get a good score.

Holes 1-9 weave their way around the front of the park near the streets and tennis area. The standout hole for me was hole 1. This is probably the most technical hole on the entire course if you play the mando correctly. Add in the fact that there is usually a gallery of locals hanging out near the teebox... it certainly increases the pressure on your drive.

Holes 9-18 wrap around the tennis complex and return back to the main parking area. Most of these holes are in the 250-350 foot range and remain pretty wide open with a few strategic trees placed here and there.

There are bathrooms and a small pro-shop on site. The baskets vary on each hole, but are all generally in good condition. Each hole has it's own shot to throw, but generally if you can throw some decent drives and keep them low (to stay out of the trees), you'll do well here.

Pros:

1- Concrete pads
2- Easy parking
3- Well maintained park
4- Bathrooms
5- Practice baskets
6- Clearly marked mandos
7- Small proshop
8- Active and friendly park

Cons:

My biggest struggle here the first few times out was the layout. If you don't know where you're going... it can be quite confusing out here. Get a map either from this site or the proshop before heading out. Some of the baskets weave in and near other fairways (especially on the front 9) so keep a set of eyes behind you.

Hole 1 is pretty close to the parking lot so if you grip lock or push a drive too far to the left, there's a serious chance you may redesign someone's fender with your disc.

Pedestrian traffic is pretty high here, but mostly off the disc golf course. I think you'll have more of chance of watching out for other disc golfers than non-disc golfers during your round. The park is very popular so getting in a queue on the course is typical.

Finally, the trees here eat your discs. They are all very thick and low enough to snatch your drives. Bring a metal mini or a baseball just in case your disc gets stuck in the branches... it just seems to happen here more than anywhere else I have played.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great disc golf park. I scored it 3.5 simply because of the actual disc golf game itself. The course is solid, but pretty straight forward. Every hole is slightly different than the others, and fairly simple to attack.

Park in the lot next to the library and walk towards the tennis courts to find the teebox for hole 1. Expect to see some disc golfers hanging out there! Enjoy the round!

Pros:

Beautiful park. Loved the grass and trees.
Fun! This course presents so many birdie opportunities without being a too short or too easy. It provides a challenges but its not too hard for less experienced players either.
Big concrete teepads were appreciated.
Great course layout.
Relatively easy to navigate without a map.

Cons:

Many of the front 9 and some of the back 9 felt repetitive from hole to hole.
No real "signature" hole on this course.
Most holes played short at 200-300.

Other Thoughts:

Rollers come in handy on this course, as trees block a lot of shots.
This is a mostly short, technical course, that was very fun to play. I would definitely play again next time in SoCal.

-Great putt practice area with 2 baskets!
-In an area that is used mostly for disc golf , save for tennis course / a library
-Located right off a major freeway in Long beach near the Lakewood border

Cons:

-Tee's can get slippery
-Mud builds up around the tee for hole 17
-While most of the locals are nice , there is a few rougher ones that will beat your a** if you're rude (it is Long beach afterall , granted a nice part of it)

Historic El Dorado 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-easy navigation, front 9 more or less run along the road, easy to find your way to the next tee pad (maps in the pro shop as well)
-all tee boxes are concrete
-friendly locals (at least the ones I met)
-beautiful park, alot of trees and plenty of shade
-good baskets: front 9 are dga mach 2s, back nine are innova discatchers
-I was told that Philo Brathwaite plays here often

Cons:

-most of the holes felt the same
-mostly flat, little to no elevation changes
-no basket numbers on the basket
-was told by the friendly locals that there are drunken idiots on the course as well

Other Thoughts:

Overall I had a great experience for my first time at El Dorado. Holes are a decent length with a couple of birdie opportunities. The park is beautiful and the locals that I met up with were super friendly (Thanks for showing me around Les). Navigation is easy, however what makes it hard is that the baskets dont have numbers (due to vandalism). One major con to me is that I felt I was throwing more or less the same shot on most holes. Sure there are some different tree arrangements that alter the shot slightly, but overall I felt that the holes didn't have as much variety. There are mandatories, but they're so generous they mind as well not be there. Despite this opinion, I really liked it here. If you throw big hyzer bombs...you won't be able to do that here and may find this course more challenging. Straight shots are definitely rewarded here. It seems like a great place to bring a beginner, but as an intermediate or even advanced player you can still enjoy yourself out here. You definitely have the opportunity to air out your disc, especially on hole 12 (500+ ft, but theres a 700+ ft pin position on this hole as well). Multiple pin positions, BUT they're all located pretty close to each other...seems like it may alter the hole sometimes and alot of times it wouldn't. I am just making this opinion based on the signage, but I've only played this course once so please keep that in mind. Overall I would definitely recommend checking out this course if in the area. btw I'm comparing this course to my home courses of Morley Field and Kit Carson Park, which I feel offer more variety of shots, more difficulty, and more elevation changes.

Good Ol' Eldo 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easy access course i.e. close to the freeway.
Awesome use of the trees which allows tunnel shots or big hyzers for the power players.
Good use of flags on baskets which are blind.
Relatively friendly local players that are willing to show you around.
Baksets move fairly often

Cons:

Fairways cross some walkpaths
Low-inventory proshop discs-wise
Slick Slick teepads due to them being surrounded by dirt, so they can get muddy sometimes.
Difficult to navigate the course, i still have trouble sometimes.
In a nice area but there can be some 'punks' around
Gopher holes means watch your step

Other Thoughts:

I have a love/hate for Eldo as i hate the area but enjoy the course, i love that it is probably the most wooded course close to where i live which allows for practicing low tunnel shots. Even though its in apublic park, the park itself is so big the disc golf course usually isn't busy with non-golfers, there are a few walkways but waiting a minute for someone to jog by is not a problem in my eyes. It also moves fairly quick, ive finished rounds in less than 40 min's there.

Solid Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

'Eldo' is nice course that is easily walkable due to the flat grassy terrain. The tee pad placement is intuitive and well marked making it easy to navigate the course. There are very few mandatories which makes any route a good route as long as you avoid the O.B. walkways. There are two practice baskets at the beginning of the course and one of them has several markers around it, which makes warm ups a bit more fun. Has a pro shop if you need refreshment or a new disc.

Cons:

The baskets are a mixture of age, type and condition. The flight path from the first tee crosses a walkway which is frequently used by the local tennis players. Usually windy in the afternoon.

Other Thoughts:

This course does not qualify as great because the course does not offer enough diversity. Every shot is thrown over manicured grass, which is nice but becomes a little boring. The flatness of the course can also become redundant.

Solid 18 Holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 10, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Well maintained course in a DG exclusive park.

- Good use of obstacles, mature trees offer a good challenge that force you to chose a tight shot under the trees or a long bomb over the tree line.

- Navigation is easy, signs are well marked.

- The course has a great vibe, you can tell that this course is well loved by the locals. There is always a good turnout however it doesn't get so crowded that you have to wait on every hole.

-There is a great mix of holes offering a great variety of shots depending on the pin positions which are moved regularly. The back 9 offers some open longer holes including the 723' monster hole.

- This is a great course to learn shots that you may not normally need, most importantly a roller. This is a great place to refine your roller skills.

- Tees are in great shape, with bathrooms onsite.

Cons:

Not a lot to hate about this course. It is very flat however they make use of any available elevation change.

Some holes can be a bit short depending on the pin position, especially in the front.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course and is definitely worth the trip if you are in the area. It is unique to other courses in the area with the trees that force either accurate low shots or huge throws over the top.

It is an all around fun course that offers a decent challenge but remains relatively forgiving.

Solid course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 11, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Another pretty So.Cal park setting for a course. El Dorado is large park with a dedicated disc golf portion which generally limits interference from non-disc golfers. Double chain baskets in good condition despite two different styles on the first nine vs. the second nine. Only minor elevation in play but a nice mixture of lefty vs. righty holes and lots of opportunities for throwing over or under trees. Typically three pin positions available on most holes, which are occasionally rotated. Practice basket available before hole #1. Concrete tee pads in good condition. Course pretty much loops back to the starting point between the first nine and second nine.

Cons:

Bad posted distances... a lot of the holes were waaay off the posted distances when I laser measured them. The baseball field that borders hole #18 could lead to some interference if there's a big crowd watching the [baseball] game. Course flow is a little bit awkward with backtracking from basket to next tee box.

Other Thoughts:

Shout out to Dave Perry for the excellent guided tour of the course. The 723' pin position on the long hole always has a basket there in addition to the other pin position. El Dorado suffers from a similar problem that La Mirada has: it's very easy to card a lot of 3's here. A bad tee shot can be made up for with a decent upshot to still give you a nice putt for 3. I can see this course growing on me over time with the challenge being how far under 54 can you get. It reminds me a lot of a better version of Agnes Moffitt in Houston.

I Got A Globe In One! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

I guess this is one of the icon courses in SoCal. This is just a very comfortable place to throw. Unlike many of the LA area courses, there doesn't seem to be a problem with large groups of picnickers taking over a fairway. The course flows very well. I was able to follow groups ahead of me. There is a very limited amount of elevation which is used to the max. The course is long enough for big arms to enjoy but yet incorporates just about throw you might have, especially rollers. It's a lovely grassy park. The pads are fine and it's well signed. The course loops around the tennis courts and back. The front nine plays entirely to the left of the path, that made navigation easy to understand. There seems to be quite the local scene here. The ones I met were friendly.

Cons:

Not much really. The course is set up to really utilize the limited elevation, the trees, the street, the courts, and the light poles..See Other Thoughts! I could see a large crowd at the ballfield affecting tee-offs on # 18.

Other Thoughts:

Teeing off on # 17 next to the tennis courts, I yanked my drive high and straight (this throw shows what a mediocre player I am) directly heading toward the 20-25'' high light standard which has an old fashioned looking globe at the top. I guess this pole is 100 ' from the pad. This globe is probably two feet high. To my dismay, my favorite driver slammed directly into the globe. Then to my complete and utter amazement, it didn't come down. Holy shit I say! I think I'm the first player in the long and storied history of this course to stick my errant drive into this globe. As I walk up and examine the globe, I see a white disc and another one stuck in there. The globe has a crack across the front and I see it's possible to lodge one in there.

So now whenever you tee off on El Dorado # 17, my favorite yellow Roadrunner will be watching down on you. I like to think it's up there in El Dorado Disc Golf Heaven!

Pros:

Highly efficient course layout squeezes every available elevation change out of a fairly flat area. Moderately wooded course with some fun midrange and longer drives, as well as a couple of crush opportunities. Cement tee pads on all holes, with signs posted on nearly every hole. Rotated pin placements. Generally easy to navigate, a big plus. The few existing mandys don't seriously detract from the fun factor. Pro shop with a small selection of discs and refreshments. Liquor store at 'Hole 3.5' provides a convenient place to 'resupply', though the park doesn't allow beer. Hole 7 is the signature hole, with a long, straight fairway, no mandys and just enough tree obstacles to make it a challenging low-trajectory shot. (for a minute, you think you are at a more remote course). Hole 13 is another, with the highest elevated tee on the course. Two practice baskets to cure 'non-putting'. Locals with great skills who aren't 'dicks'.

Cons:

Shares some urban course limitations with LaMirada, such as nearby busy streets, baseball fields and limited resources. No real stunning holes on par with Coyote Point, or even LaMirada's back 18. Some baskets are old and eject usually good enough putts. Wet grass and mud after rains.

Other Thoughts:

Not a destination course, but definitely one to consider if you are in the area. Also check out the nice tennis courts, which stay open until 9:30 and rent out rackets. Staff at the Pro Shop was courteous and happy to answer questions.

Nice course in Long Beach 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 10, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-I can think of very little that would improve this course.
-Mostly DG exclusive, minus a few paths that meander through the course. They have never presented a problem for me.
-Course takes advantage of terrain features the best it can, total elevation difference is no more than 10' throughout.
-Well thought out, uses trees and hills the very best they can be.
-Putting baskets
-Friendly locals
-Well marked, easy to follow. Flows well.

Cons:

-The last hole is often jeopardized by sports teams. Many people just play a safari hole 19 back to the putting area to make it a full 18 if needed.
-Can get busy, some people here take DG far too seriously.
-Some pins are close to a busy street, and there is no fence.
-The trees smell kinda weird. I'm not going to say what we thought it smelled like, but weird nonetheless :)
-Both times I have visited, it has been busy. This leads to being in a 'rotation,' with no passing really allowed, which I don't really like because I prefer to relax and play at my own pace. The course easily has more than 18 groups playing at any given time.

Other Thoughts:

I have friends who regard this as their favorite course in LA, and I can see where they are coming from. Compared to the other park courses in LA, I find it to be awesomely average. Which is definitely a good thing. This course is great for brushing up on every type of throw.
While the locals have all been really nice (younger than what I see at other courses), we have run into some pretty crazy people. This one guy chucked a driver at an oblivious lady that was trying to bring his disc back to him. I know she was in the wrong, but he was an absolute jerk to her.
There always seem to be some great old timers hanging out near the practice pins, and they are totally willing to dish out some advice if you ask for it.
When the course is busy, you really need to keep an eye out for other drives. I had about 5 discs land within 30 feet of me with no 'fore' yelled.

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 13, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- decent pro shop with discs, drinks & snacks
- single practice basket
- good sized cement tees
- up to 3 pin positions per hole, and most have 3
- nice, descriptive signs
- usually not crowded at all
- good, easy to follow layout
- good use of OB paths
- well maintained city park

Cons:

- bathrooms are available in the pro shop and you can visit here after the front nine also
- not too much in the way of terrain, but nice course design otherwise
- mix of old and new baskets, and the old ones don't always catch that well
- some holes can get pretty repetitive, and this can make the round drag occasionally, especially if you're not throwing well

Other Thoughts:

Hole 12 usually has 2 baskets, a short one and a really long (700' +), so we take two drives and play it as two separate holes.

El Do is a dream if you have a good roller. There are many low canopies on the front nine where the basket is too far for a spike hyzer or an overhand, so these holes are where people who can roll will get many of their strokes.

Some holes are a little short, but don't let the course length deceive you... it's still a tough one because of all the trees reaching for your discs.

El Do is a solid course and well worth a stop by if you're anywhere down in the southern LA metro area or Orange County.

Fun course in LB 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 5, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Good blend of long and short holes
-Decent tee pads and signage, for the most part the course flows in a logical manner
-Nice park setting, with very few non-disc golfers in the area.
-Pro shop
-Friendly locals
-Generally plays pretty fast

Cons:

-Old style DiscCatchers, the ones with the shallow cages and heavy chains, I hate those!
- A little confusing layout around the middle of the course, but it's definitely not the worst I've seen

Other Thoughts:

They built a solid course to work on your game at El Do. It's worth playing if you are in the area. I always talk about how I don't really like the course, but I continue to go back, for whatever that's worth lol.
