Emerald Park... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 26, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wow! Grass!!! Course is located in a small, neighborhood park with nice, green, grass fairways. The course utilizes what little elevation and trees this park has very well. Decent hole length with a few long holes, but most of the holes can be reached with one good drive. The pond comes into play on one hole, but you would have to overshoot the basket by about 30 ft. to land in it. Baskets seemed to be brand new and were very visible from the tee.

Cons:

Like I said before the park is really flat and doesn't have very many trees, but the course layout uses every possible way to bring the little they have into play. Tee pads were really muddy and were hard to spot. Tee signs were terrible, just like all the others in the Phoenix area. They had the strangest maps which provided no information except distance.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this was a nice little course to play if your in the area, but don't make a trip just to play here.

**Update** There are concrete tee pads for all 18 holes now!

New Baskets 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I just played this course yesterday after not having been there for 6 weeks or so and was pleasantly surprised as they have all new baskets. The course layout has changed slightly which also made it a bit more enjoyable and slightly more challenging.

Cons:

The dirt tee areas are still terrible and getting worse. Water in pond is absolutely nasty but you shouldn't wind up in there unless you have a really terrible throw.

Other Thoughts:

Wondering why concrete tees weren't put in before new baskets? The baskets are really nice but concrete tees would have been even better. Does anyone know when/if those are going to be put in?

The Emerald Jewel 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course is well maintained
The Emerald Disc Golf Club meets every monday at 5pm, and they are very helpful for beginners
course is set for improvements (teee pads, new baskets) by the end of Summer 2010 ... The EDGC has raised thousands to do this..and the City of Mesa is pitching in 3500 to 4000 bucks =]

Cons:

currently it is not well marked and the dirt/grass tee pads are very worn down
the baskets are very old and a lot of discs bounce out

Other Thoughts:

I love this course. it's pretty wide open for players with big arms. The EDGC has been shooting around ideas for adding more trees.

Neat Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 22, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Easy to navigate
- Interesting use of available elevation.
- Good shots needing smart lines to get to the basket.
- No one was there
- Other park users are not in the way
- Some elevated and well protected baskets

Cons:

- Dirt tee pads
- Though easy to navigate signs were torn down or missing.
- Hole #1 plays towards the road.
- Hole #9 plays towards around the parking lot.
- No bathroom

Other Thoughts:

Neat little course that plays around a retention basin. for those concerned about the water it is not a factor on any hole except #6 in which you need to overshoot a 365 foot hole. Because it is a retention basin it drags debris in when it floods so there were cigarette butts and other sorts of garbage especially around the mouth of the basin. I assume after a good rain much of the course can be soggy. My group didn't play the back 9, but the front 9 really seemed to favor RHFH or LHBH as there was nothing to navigate when throwing with those styles, RHBH will have some trees to navigate but nothing too difficult. Often the biggest obstacle for newer players will be getting a disc to sit on some of the inclined basket placements. Overall, do not plan a trip for this course, but I enjoyed this course and will gladly play it again. Its worth checking out if you are in the area.

Close to Home Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 10, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

We love this little course. It is close to home, not crowded, spaced out nicely to avoid a tangle of projectile missiles of destruction. It is cool. Lots of test for your driver (again, nothing to really let it rip for you upwards of 400 guys, but I can't throw it that far anyway), and some good technical parts (remember, I am a newbie) with hills and trees.

Plus, there is a great local club that works this course, and they are super cool for new folks to learn the game.

All around, if you are new to the sport (or seasoned at it and just need a nice place to open up and practice) this is a great course. We love it, and play it at least a few times a week.

Cons:

The signage of this course is horrible. If you need proof that Mesa is out of money when compared to say Chandler... this course will prove it. You can basically figure it out for the front nine, but when you turn to do it in reverse, you need to have someone tell you the code...

Other Thoughts:

Still.... close to home. Easy bike ride, play and bike home. No crowds. That combination makes this one a winner.

Nice little park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 20, 2006 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice elevation changes for a 9 hole course. Some holes set on a downward slope. Signage is adequate. Phoenix disc golfers are always nice and willing to assist. Some techinical shots required. Nice grip and rip course as most Phoenix courses are. Not much multi use traffic so people rarely get in the way.

Cons:

Dirt tee pads. Back 9 is difficult to find if you don't play with someone who knows the course. No water or restrooms.

Other Thoughts:

Pond in the middle can come into play on a few shots. Course is set in a wash basin so if it is rainy the course will be soggy and holding water.

#10 shoots across the length of the parking back to #9 and you follow the course backward for the back 9. #13 shoots over the length of the pond toward #5.

friendly folks, fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good variety of shots and distances. Pretty park with friendly other disc golfers. Good use of trees, parking lots, small hills as obstacles.

Cons:

Without the links above to describe each hole, it would be a challenge to find all the tee boxes. I hear it gets muddy, but it was dry when I played.

Other Thoughts:

Ran into another group that had their own alternate tees. I wish someone would post them

easy beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 6, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice open course. Not many trees to get in the way and hole are fairly short. The course uses what it has available to it in reagrds to the trees and small hills found throughout. 9 holes, but can be played in reverse for 18. Clean, easy to get to and not too busy when I played. A good course to work on your drives as a few of the holes are open and a little long. The grass throughout is something not seen to much in the desert area.

Cons:

Teepads are grass and certainly not easy to find. Maybe 5 signs for the holes were remaining. Obvious navigation issues, but easy enough to figure out. Not much of a challenge here for more experienced players. The Mach 2's were well worn and didn't catch very well. I have seen a lot of putts bounce out on them.

Other Thoughts:

A nice change of pace from other courses in the area in that fact that there is actually grass everywhere! Just enough challenge to get an enjoyable quick round in and tempt you into coming back again. Definately a beginner course, but still has a little to offer everyone else.

Good for a Fix 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 14, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very easy to get to in the East Valley. Never really crowded. All the local guys are cool. Great use of the park to get 18 outta 9. I love the shot (#12) over the pond.

One thing I will always say about these lil neighborhood 9'rs they can make some awesome guerilla courses. So the potential for some good fun is always there

Cons:

Short and open. Signs are jacked up, but you don't need 'em. Need a local to play the back 9 the 1st time. Gets flooded during rains/ monsoons and is muddy for days after (it is a retention area as well as a park)

No tee pads (weak footing) and the signage has been vandalized, so there is just a pole with an empty frame where the info was. No Restrooms

Other Thoughts:

Great place to get a quick fix if you live in the East Valley

Got my first ace on hole #3 with a bunch of buddies (Jahding, Peedle, Worm, China, Mark, Klimek, Steve, Willy....miss you guys!!)

Favorite Hole: # 3 because I got my 1st ace there, but #12 rules!!! Throw all the way accross the pond. About 350+' to the pin and it is pretty well protected by 2 trees.... Again, I Love Water!!!!

Decent Neighborhood Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 28, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Considering the limited size of this park, it's genuinely amazing that they managed to put a decent DG course in. The sloping hillside ads a little spice, and comes into play on several holes. Also, the electric green pond comes into play on one or more holes, for a little twist. One of the most interesting hole involves shooting over the hill and to the right to a blind pin on the opposite slope. Even after playing it before, and scouting it out to remind yourself, its always hard to judge where the basket is from the tee. I like that.

Alternate Tees allow you to play the course sortof backwards for 18 holes. Alt tees are even a little more challenging than the regular ones. Nice because they allow you to flow around the opposite direction and reverse everything: The lake is on the other side, the hill slopes to the right instead of to the left. Evens it out a bit.

Cons:

This course is in a mostly open area around the sides of the park, with only scattered trees. While some baskets are reasonably well protected, most are pretty wide open.

The marking on this course is halfway between bad and nonexistent. Natural tees are mostly marked by two little flags jammed into the ground. Look like mini koosh balls. Very hard to see. Only some have signs. I understand why they did it, since concrete or stones might be a bad idea in a multi-use park, but most holes play around the edges of the park, and would benefit from a simple numbered pole.

The alt tees are even harder to find, since they are all koosh balls of a different color (green vs pink i think) than the main ones. Since they are less often used than the main ones, they are even harder to locate.

The baskets are also not numbered, which makes it difficult at times to know which one you are shooting at. The few times I played there, I had to redirect groups to the right basket on more than one occasion.

One of the (alt?) holes seems very poorly planned. It is a shot across the parking lot, that just asks for broken windows and dented panels. Most play from next to the parking lot for this reason, but to avoid confusion and angry motorists, the tee should be officially moved.

Also, on the last few holes, and the first few alt holes, watch out for the cinder block wall that separates the park from the residential neighborhood. Many of the houses there have big dogs roaming the back yards, so if your disc goes over the wall its toast.

Though it throws a little variety at you, this park is mostly plain vanilla. Its a good place to take beginners or to practice your drives, but nothing to write home about.

Mouer Park and Vista Del Camino are both more challenging and fun.

This park would benefit from better tee signs, though the time and money would be better spent installing signs on the back nine of Mouer than fixing the ones here.

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad park, but very basic. However, if you want to go throw discs in a field, it is preferable to have baskets to aim at. This is a good place for that, provided you don't toss one over the fence or the wall, or into the stagnant duck pond.

I'm glad there is a DG course here, but its an instance of making the best course possible within a very limited space. This course succeeds in that sense, but its still very plain. Its enjoyable to play, and the hill putts do spice things up a bit, but its nothing to write home about.

A neighborhood course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 25, 2005 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Not busy, lots of grass, some water hazards.

Cons:

Not a real challenging or interesting course.

Other Thoughts:

This course is nothing special. But it shows how every neighborhood in America could squeeze a course into a public park. It doesn't matter than it's not the world greatest course. What matters is that it's right in the middle of a residential neighborhood and lots of people have a course within a short walk of their front door. We need more courses like this that are central and get more people playing.

open wet field 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's well maintained, freshly mowed grass, very clean and safe neighborhood. Good for rollers when not wet. Water hazard is there but not in your face. Good length, and use of hillsides.

Cons:

The pond in the middle can make some tees underwater/wet/or muddy and hard to throw from safely/easily. Not well marked- only about 3 tee signs, the rest recently marked by the corner of the tee box (grass) making it possible to navigate. Almost entirely wide open, with sparse trees. A fence on one hole can't be climbed to retrieve a disc.

Other Thoughts:

Nice that it has dual tee back around to make 18 holes.

Works in a pinch 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

A place to play in a pinch
Good use of the few obstacles (some trees, a little elevation and water) available

Cons:

I feel for the folks who have to design the courses in the PHX metro area...there are not many options
This course was a little redundant for me, but not at all the fault of the designers...

Other Thoughts:

The bottom line for me (especially when I'm traveling on business--which is the situation when I play in the Phx area) is that I would rather be out tossing my discs in a park like this than not playing at all...there have been some courses that are so poorly designed I would never play them again...this one is not in that category, I've played it a number of times

Multiple Tees 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

Good use of multiple tees to create an 18 hole layout out of 9 baskets. Good use of rather unremarkable parkland to create interesting holes. Slight elevation and sloping fairways create challenge and water comes into play on a few holes.

Cons:

The last hole playing across/around the parking lot should maybe be rethought.
