Pros:
Summary: Eurana Park is an exciting, well-maintained public parks course in a beautiful setting that will get newer players hooked on the sport while still providing some thought-provoking shots for experienced players. While not particularly close to many other courses, this course is well worth the visit if you are travelling in or through the area.
Pros:
- Tee pads are well-constructed, hard-packed gravel framed in (where necessary) by 4x4 treated lumber timbers.
- Tee signs were large and showed a photograph of the golfer's view from the tee, with a star indicating where the basket should be. They also included lines showing intended flight paths, as well as mandos and distance information. Almost all of the information a golfer could want (except an aerial image) was included on each sign.
- Several holes had two tee options.
- Every hole, even the short ones and the straight ones, had elements that made you think about disc selection and how you were throwing. Mandos (sometimes 2 per hole) were employed on several holes to force technical shots. Elevation changes were abundant, as were really sharp dog-legs and curving, tree-filled fairways that loved to kick your discs if you missed your line. Several times I watched in wonder as my disc found that perfect curve and narrowly sailed through a plinko field of trees. At least as many times I found myself adding unorthodox throws to my arsenal as I scrambled to recover from a bad throw or tree kick.
- This course is set up in a park that has a lot to offer everyone who comes (playground, man-made swimming lake, snack shack, picnic tables, pavilions, dog park, etc.), but the disc-golf course is it's own area and your game is never obstructed by other park activities.
- The course was very well-maintained and low brush was minimal (mostly just the occasional area of ferns), so there was little risk of losing discs, and little time was wasted searching for them when a throw went errant.
- The park has well-maintained bathrooms, and trash cans and benches were nicely spread through the disc golf course.
Cons:
- Signage was a little lacking, so occasionally it took a minute to find the next tee (or intended basket). Not a huge problem, as most of the tees were not far from the previous basket, but a little more direction would be ideal.
- There was no practice/warm-up area.
- Most of the holes were relatively short, and while they were definitely more technical, I feel that the pars were often still higher than I expected, at least for experienced players. The pars seemed like they might have been set so as not to discourage newer players.
- Hole 16 (AKA: "The Swamp") was intentionally set in exactly that: a swamp. While it did create some intrigue, anyone who does not place their throw perfectly or get insanely lucky (as I did) will find themselves wishing for knee-high muck boots or surrendering their disc to the wetlands. This is perhaps not the ideal way to add interest to a hole.
Other Thoughts:
I thoroughly enjoyed this course and was pleasantly surprised by it. The local community obviously takes good care of it, and despite the shorter length of holes, I found the elevation, technicality, and condition of the course to be refreshing and invigorating. While not a tournament-caliber destination, the "fun-factor" associated with this course led me to rate it very highly.
