Roughing It, with Some Reward 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

A reasonably lengthy nine-holer with some early appeal.

-Terrain: Not all-star, but good enough to construct some neat holes. A pond and a creek are used to good effect on the first four holes. Sparse trees lend interest on (5), (8), and (9).

-First Four: I really liked the opening 40% of this course. (1) threw downhill to a basket on the other side of the creek guarded by trees, (2) had the same interesting kind of green and some trees to get through, and (4) was a fun pond shot that wasn't wide open and had an elevated, sloped basket.

-Other Shot Shaping: A passable level. The trees grant a minimal requirement of shaping except for hole (7). The greens on (6) and (8) are slightly guarded. The length also isn't puny, which is a problem I often encounter on nine-hole courses.

Cons:

Maintenance and uncreativeness.

-Final Five: I would consider these holes to be at a low Passable (1.5) level. (6) and (7) are wide open for 500 feet, and the other three present only minimal tree challenges.

-Amenities: Not good. There are 9 old DGA baskets, 7 sets of tee posts (R.I.P. posts (5) and (6)), and nothing else. Some of the ditch and creek crossings are a bit problematic with no bridges, and will probably require muddy shoes. The absence of tee signs is an issue on (5)-(7) when you can't see the basket from the tee. Also, the short tees seem to be entirely gone.

-Navigation: The actual flow is okay, but with such few amenities it's hard to figure out where to go next. Don't make my mistake and throw from tee (3) to basket (6).

-Maintenance: The grass was above ankle-high on my visit. Reading the trail of reviews on UDisc, I think this is the normal state of affairs. Expect to be a bit uncomfy.

-Drainage: (5) and (7) both had very muddy portions of the fairway, and the several ditches are soft on either edge and large enough to not be fun to jump.

-Pond: The water on (4) is a real threat, especially because it extends for farther than it looks from the tee.

Other Thoughts:

I'm a little nervous that I've rated this course higher than all the other TRs who have reviewed it. For me, I think what clenches it are the enjoyable (1), (2), and (4). The rest of the course is Passable, but with the inclusion of those I give it Reasonable. Be advised that it's tricky to navigate--both in terms of which direction to throw and how to get to your lie without being muddied.

Pros:

easy to find the course, and quick to play when you only have a short time. Holes are pretty well marked. Not wooded, but there are some trees and a little water to add a little difficulty.

Cons:

an easy course, so if you are looking for a challenge this is not the place.
