Fewell Park

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 11, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fewell Park is a short, beginner friendly course with nice Innova DISCatcher baskets. There are short tees and even shorter tees, so players can choose which level of difficulty they want to play. The short tees have tee signs listing the hole, par, and distance.

The two layouts could be played in tandem to create an 18 hole disc golf experience.

Plenty of ace opportunities, so anyone who is hunting and ace, this would be a perfect course to try to find one. For a course of shorter holes, the holes are designed in a fun way with noticeable gaps to hit or obstacles to avoid.

The course is compact, and short, so a round shouldn't take long. A buddy and I played it in 15 to 20 minutes, and we were intentionally trying to take our time

The natural tees are incredibly well marked.

Very close to both Boyd Hill and Winthrop. Fewell Park can be used as a fun warm up or a nice cool-down after a round at either of those local Rock Hill heavy hitters.

A great course for a putters only round.

The slight elevation that does exist is utilized pretty well. Hole 7 is ever so slightly downhill putt off the tee, and Hole 8 goes back up that slight up. Hole 4 plays under a somewhat low ceiling.

Cons:

Played on a particularly grey day, with a light drizzle during our round. Some of the natural tees were fine, but a handful were just sloppy puddles of mud. Luckily a run up isn't really required, but it is less than ideal. The natural tees are showing signs of erosion.

The holes, for the most part, feel very similar to one another. Not much variety in terms of shot shaping or hole length.

Once you get your bearings, navigation is pretty simple, but right out of the gate it can be slightly tricky because the course is so compact. Finding the long tees proved to be the biggest challenge.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed my round at Fewell Park. It felt refreshing to play after finishing a round at Boyd Hill, as a nice way to cap off the day. It is a great place for beginners to learn the game, and would be a fun place to play a quick, afternoon round if I lived in the area. I think a 1.5 rating feels pretty fair for the course, but if some form of tee pad were installed to prevent so much erosion, I would probably bump my rating up some.

Pros:

Fewell Park is a great course for beginners or those looking for a quick putter only round. Ace runs galore for anyone average or above.

The course itself is tucked into one side of the park and the navigation is pretty straightforward. It's not going to take more than 20, maybe 30 minutes to play a round. Nice warmup for nearby Boyd Hill too.

The baskets are nice newer Innova Discatchers. These are all mounted nice and level and catch great. One basket/pin position per hole. No complaints with these. I updated them on here. Apparently they used to have Mach's at some point, so a good upgrade.

The tees are natural. No, or at least a minimal, run up is required for these short holes. There's colored circular stones in the ground serving as the tees. Long and short positions on all holes which spices it up a bit.

Good flow from hole to hole. There shouldn't be much confusion finding your way around out here. The course starts and ends near the parking area as well.

The park itself is very nice. Pretty area and seemed to be very clean and well kept. Probably never too busy and it's permanent and free to play.

Cons:

The tee "pads" are natural. While normally they're probably fine, it was raining when I played, and they are basically mud puddles in that situation. Probably stay that way for awhile afterwards too. I don't expect them to pour concrete tees for a course like this. But just be warned that you may have to either tee off to the side/front/back/whatever or wear some shoes that you don't mind getting muddy.

The holes are all of similar lengths so the replay value isn't really there. It's fun for what it is, but what it is is very basic.

As was mentioned in other reviews, the tee markers could be hard to find in the fall with any kind of leaf cover on the ground.

Other Thoughts:

This course was actually a really fun little one. Probably helped that I aced hole 2, but it also serves as a nice warm up for nearby Boyd Hill. It's listed on here as "Heavily Wooded". I would go ahead a call that a gross overstatement. It has some trees on every hole. That's it.

Not a destination course obviously. But absolutely worth a stop if in the area. Especially since it only takes a few minutes to play it. It's good for what it is, and does a great job doing what it was designed to do. I'd play it again.

you dont have an ace? Play Here! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great place for beginers or those trying to improve their short game or ace count.

I was qable to play it in less than 15 min by myself.

The course flowed really well and it was easy to find every hole

I felt that the design was great for the tiny piece of property the course is on.

Cons:

The baskets are old school and have bolts that stick out of the top that I bet would tear up your discs.

It is just a pitch and putt.

Other Thoughts:

There really isnt much to say about this one because I felt that it was a good course for the space and the objective of creating a beginer course. I wouldn't say that it was a bad course by any means but its definatly not championship caliber. If your in the Rock Hill area and want to play a quick round to add a new course. Stop here and carry 2 discs. YOu'll be through in no time.

Fewell Park-Home Of The 20 Minute Round! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 22, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's a cross between a pitch and putt course and a disc golf putt-putt course. I think it needs to grow up a little to full achieve full pitch & putt status. That being said, it's a great little course for someone to learn the game on. A great course for the local 10-15 year olds to hang out and throw. A interesting course to practice your short game and a place to go if you want to rack up another Ace. Or bring the girlfriend who can only throw 75 ft.

Cons:

I think only one hole is over 200 ft. The baskets are the single chain type and the teepads are dirt. But you probably don't need a run-up on 125 ft. holes, do you?

Other Thoughts:

# 6 is a 65 foot open, sightly downhill shot where you need to give it a little anhyser. One of disc golfs truly memorable holes. It ranks right up the "Top of the World" # 18 at Delavega. Well, I aced # 6 here on my second round of the day. And no, I'm not retiring my putter to the wall anytime soon. But I did write the Ace information on the back so my friends at home can bust my balls about a 65 ft. ace. I talked to a group of the local pre-teens who play here and asked them how many Aces they have. They all had three or four already. Take this course for what it is! And then figure out a way to enjoy it!

C = An unashamed pitch & putt course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2004 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

What I personally like and how this course stacks up (counting everything as a Par-2, so a birdie is an ace):
1) Holes with good risk/reward -- C-
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities -- B+ (Aces feel great even on 100' holes)
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography -- B+ (Surprisingly, for such short holes you gotta shape your throws pretty well to get ace runs)
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion -- C- (The big Oaks are nice, but on such a small piece of land you never feel like you are getting away)
5) Bonus amount for multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them -- N/A

Other Thoughts:

It's all about feeding the addiction, so I ranked this course subjectively based on my own "personal addiction factor". The grades above tell how well the course will draw me back to itself again and again and again. Since I have played a decent number of courses (115 18-hole, 50 9-hole as of early 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar addiction tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they choose courses to play and explore.

Over time, I expect to fill some of my reviews in with more descriptive verbiage...if what I can add anything to what has already been written. For now, my list is more important to me than the verbiage of my reviews.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me....that's the fun of things here. See my profile for my rating philosophy.

Easiest course I've ever played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 28, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Excellent course to work on midrange, putting, etc. You only need two discs (max) on this course.

- This course is great for beginners, and a confidence-builder for anyone else. Lots of ace possibilities and birdie probabilities.

- Whether you play 9 or 18 (from the alternate tee positions), it's the quickest round of disc golf you'll ever play.

Cons:

- Definitely cramped, as mentioned before. I actually aimed for the wrong basket on one hole (9/18) because there was another basket in the same general direction.

- Not much variety, as one would expect with a course this small. The course is moderately wooded, though, so at least it's not like you're playing 9/18 holes out in a field somewhere.

Other Thoughts:

- I enjoyed this course because I played 36-hole match play with a friend. Even that was a quick round. I can only imagine how quick it would be for just one player. All I can say is that you have to know going in that it's a short course and there isn't much challenge to it. If you go in with that attitude, it can be a great opportunity to work on your short game.

Enjoyable pitch-n-putt course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 28, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fewell is the ultimate pitch and putt course. Only 1 hole is over 200 feet. And, that's what makes it fun.
- Leave the bag in the car. Seriously, if you bring a bag, it will slow you down on this course. You're much better carrying a couple putters/mid-ranges. You only need more discs if you're emptying the bag for a cubby ace.
- 9 baskets, dual tees make it 18. 2nd set of tees at least give some challenge. And by challenge, I mean, you'll actually have to do a little work for birdies.
- #3 /12 is the toughest hole simply because it's the longest layout. A sneaky tough one is #16 as you're throwing a blind, downhill dogleg right layout. Be prepared to run to follow the disc's flight especially if you go long or right.
- #2 is the best hole. It's a simple downhill shot. As is the case with most holes, you can take multiple routes to the basket as you're throwing around any number of trees.
- Birdies galore on this course, especially on the short layout. You can take aim for the basket on every hole, making plenty of ace runs. You shouldn't be penalized too much for overaggressive play. Barring bad bounces off trees, or missed putts, shouldn't see many, if any, bogeys on a scorecard.
- Quick, easy rounds. Played 36 holes in under an hour.
- Great course for kids and beginners. Play it Again is 5 minutes down Cherry Road. Pick up a couple of putters and mids, and introduce new people to the game.
- Nice, little neighborhood park. There's a nice playground, walking trails and tennis courts here. Good course to practice your short game on.

Cons:

Baskets are in poor shape. Several are dented and crooked. Natural, silver color makes them hard to spot, especially in the shadows.
- Poor signage. Holes are marked with simple pavers in the ground. For first timers, navigation can be WAY more complicated than it needs to be. For a first time player, it's not hyberbole to say you could spend more time searching for the correct tee pads, especially in the Fall/Winter when leaves are on the ground than it would take to play the course.
- Dirt tee pads. Not a major issue because run-ups aren't needed for short shots.
- Course is cramped. From the long tees, holes do begin overlapping. If the course/park is crowded, could pose a real issue.
- There is a higher than expected lost disc factor for such a short course. Throwing blind on #7, a disc could easily take a bad bounce off a tree or branch and sail away. There's also thick stuff on the right of #6 &7, plus some thick stuff that comes into play on #8.

Other Thoughts:

- For such a simple, low maintenance course, Fewell has always been a fun course. It's way better than it should be when you consider how simple and cramped this layout is. You gotta enjoy birdies no matter how easy the course.
- Even with so many school courses in Rock Hill, this is still the best of the nine-holers. Maybe I'm biased towards the OG, but I'm fond of it.
- Since the first time I played here more than a decade ago, I've always thought this is the perfect course to have across the street from your house. If you lived in any of the homes across the street from the park, you know you'd be here all the time.
- If you played Fewell a lot, I'm curious what's a realistic best 9-hole score. From the short tees, is 15 possible - 3 aces, 6 birdies. 16? Any round with more than one or two pars seems like a poor round.
- It's a good course to use as a warm up before tackling Winthrop Gold. Or a good pick me up after a rough round. Other than that, or if you don't live nearby, you don't need to go out of your way to play.
- Perfect course for an ace race, skins match, one-disc challenge or other type of games to play.
