I Threw is Through the Grapevine

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 13, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's a cool property, and they make their own vino right there. There aren't many spots where you're likely to land one among the grapevines. A little bit of elevation change, and some water in play. It is pretty long and a lot of holes are fairly open. There are a few wooded holes, and some large stands of trees to work around.

Par from the blue tees is 65, with 5 par fours and 3 par fives. Two tees per hole so you can shorten it up if you want to. Red tees are par 62 with 6 par fours and 1 par five. The long set are concrete, and the short are on rubber pads. The baskets are Mach X, and were all in good standing. There is a map near the first hole, and tee signs for each hole. It's a John Houck design, so you know he will optimize the available landscape.

The first hole is fun, it's an elevated tee, with a couple of trees to either side that require some shot shaping. The basket is planted atop a wine barrel raising it up a good 3 feet or so. Hole 2 is a nice one with a hill just tall enough to hide the basket from view from the tee. Several trees reside on the bit of grass where the pin is set. Hole 3 is also an elevated tee and has a basin to the right side but luckily it was dry when I played. Hole 6 and 7 are long ones that play under and around a fair number of trees. 6 is more under the canopies of a few scattered trees with open stretches in between. 7 has a strategic landing zone with dense, tall trees that you need to pick a side to get around. The long tee on 8 is a tough drive, followed by a couple of big open field drives before crossing the creek to a basket in under mature oaks. 9 is a cool hole that plays a gap in the trees and crosses a the creek bed.

10 is another long one, playing spot to spot with heavy trees in spots, and open throws if you can avoid them. 11, 12 and 13 all play short distance, and through trees with a elevation. 15 is a pretty cool tee shot from the top of a hill. The final hole is a sphincter squeezer from the long tee. You have to play over the pond, and it isn't easy to judge how aggressively you want to play it to maximize distance, especially if there is a breeze. From that point, you can play a shot along the edge of the water, or go for it crossing water again to the opposite shore. Not a bad way to finish it off.

Cons:

A couple of the holes are largely wide open, sometimes they serve as connectors that are a bit bland. 4 is a putter shot between plots of grapevines, with only a power line pole to play around. 14 is pretty long and mostly open crossing the grass.

I did have a bit of trouble finding the first tee. The walk from hole 9 to 10 is sort of long. You'll find some shade sporadically throughout the course, but you will get plenty of sun. Water and sunscreen will come in very handy.

Other Thoughts:

I am really glad we made the drive from Austin to play this one on our visit. Houck courses are some of the best in my experience, and there is enough to work with to layout a fun and challenging design. It is worth the money to check this one out. A nice drive along the way.

We didn't try the wine, perhaps that's how I managed to go even par on the round. I got 4 birdies and 4 bogies, par on the rest.

So worth the trip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Simply beautiful course, I couldn't even be mad when I got my first throw stuck in a tree cuz it was a really beautiful tree
- Tee signs
- Course map provided by the pro shop
- Concrete tee boxes for the pro tees, and black rubber tee pads for the recreation tees
-- Some holes have one tee for both
- Has red baskets for recreation players and blue baskets for pro players
-- Some holes have one basket for both
- Easily the most maintained course I've ever played
- Hole design is great, each one makes excellent use of the land
-- There's plenty of open and wooded holes
-- Hole 15 does a great job playing with elevation
- Pro shop on the course that sells cold drinks, discs, water retrievers, etc.
- Plenty of bathrooms
- Plenty of parking

Cons:

- Poison ivy in the ravines, watch yourself!
- There's a lack of trash receptacles on the course
- Not a lot of shade, bring a hat and a lot of water

Other Thoughts:

It's $20 to play but that also gives you a wine tasting you can redeem before, after, or between nines. There's also a $40 option that comes with a pizza and glass of wine.

Be wary of the wildlife. We ran into a lone coyote that yelped at us before running off.

This course is long! A group of four of us took about 3 hours to get through the whole thing.

Pokemon Go: There are two stops near the pro shop.

Excellent Combination 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 4, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has a bunch of fun challenges. From some moderately wooded holes to open holes to holes where water comes into play. There are a few tee shots where the window you have to throw it through is defined for you (triple mando and trees). The two sets of tee pad and some holes with two baskets make it fun as well as long as you understand which route you are playing. Having a pro shop with Neil there as a resource is a huge plus as well.

As other have said below, the tee pads, baskets and signage are all top notch.

Cons:

Not much comes to mind. To be picky, I threw a combination of long and short tees and the par on a few of the short holes seemed a little generous (open and less the 350 feet should be a par 3).

Other Thoughts:

For sure the disc golf itself is really good, but the setting of this course at a winery is great. The views are fantastic and the people were really friendly. If this course were closer to Houston and the roads weren't so winding to get there, I would be there all the time.

Beautiful Property 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 26, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This beautiful course winds through a vineyard/resort in the Texas Hill Country. There are ponds, creeks, mature oaks and pecans, and lots of open, mowed grass.

The infrastructure is top notch with new Mach X baskets, great tee signs, concrete tees (blue and some red) and rubber mats (some red). The small pro shop has a modest selection of discs, and if you are into wine there is a wine tasting included with your round.

Most holes have either short (red) and long (blue) tees, or a short and long basket positions from a single tee. Hole 8 has two tees and two baskets so you can really mix it up.

The red positions are quite short. I drove with a putter on many of them and would characterize them as "birdie or die" holes for advanced players. The blue positions add significant length and difficulty to the holes.

There is a good bit of out-of-bounds on the course, which is mostly the vineyards themselves. Wwhere else do you encounter that?

With the upper pond nearly dry the day I played, only Hole 18 had water in play. But it is a great finishing hole requiring a drive over the pond (blue tee) to a landing area, and then another drive across the pond to a basket on a peninsula. Very challenging, especially with the wind up.

Cons:

I really wanted to like this course better, as I am a big proponent of private owners installing pay-to-play courses. So why didn't I?

Mainly because of the many long, open throws over mowed grass. While there are plenty of holes that play along the creek or into and out of groves of trees, I found many of the holes dominated by long, open stretches. Hole 8 is a great example. From the shorts you have a 458' drive over open ground to a basket set near the creek. The landing area is a bit of a challenge, but the drive is wide open. From the longs you have an 950' long hole with a gap at the halfway point to cross the creek. But everything before and after the gap is open ground.

For being in the Hill Country the elevation changes on the course are modest. Hole 12 comes to mind as a fun little downhill ace run, and Hole 15 is a longer downhill throw over open ground, but I didn't really get the sense of a Moderately Hilly course.

As far as water in play, the upper pond was mostly a dried out mudhole the day I played and the creek was essentially dry as well. However the lower pond (Hole 18) was full.

Other Thoughts:

This is a well designed course with beautiful amenities. But the area of land made available lacked some desirable elements.

If you are looking for a destination experience with disc golf, wine, and perhaps a meal, this is a one-of-a-kind course.

If you are simply looking to play a couple of rounds of disc golf it is certainly worth a visit, but frankly there are other courses in the region that I enjoy more.

The fee to play is $20 ($15 if you are a PDGA member) and includes a wine tasting. Since my wife and I don't drink the tasting didn't happen, making the fee a little steep compared to many other private courses. I didn't deter me from trying the course, but I doubt that I'll go rushing back.

Spectacular property! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-amazingly beautiful hill country terrain
-elevation, ponds, creeks, thick trees, sparse trees, open fields, vineyards
-great MachX baskets, top shelf Houck tee signs
-13 holes have dual tees, concrete longs, rubber shorts, all in great condition
-3 of the 5 holes with a single tee have permanent short & long baskets; the par 5 hole 8 has long & short tees and long & short baskets
-double loop design comes back to the clubhouse after 9 and 18
-pro shop, has scorecards, discs & stuff for sale
-course map next to the pro shop
-excellent design, great par 4 and 5 holes, placement on drives emphasized
-practice basket, next to the disc golf parking
-huge variety of distances, lines required, and water dangers
-uses "natural" OB well
-great greens with lots of danger: elevation, water, jail trees
-the two sets of tees cater well to their intended player levels
-course is maintained in great condition
-of course, the winery and restaurant are on site
-pay to play, nice membership option

Cons:

-a couple of the shorter holes are filler. holes 4 and 5 are both short, somewhat narrow holes between two patches of grapevines. it makes sense for the routing but they really stick out being back to back.
-definitely some places to lose plastic in the drink. personally, i'm a fan of water on the course but some will always complain
-i think the course is quite a bit easier than i expected. i can't say i was disappointed because the design is exciting and i loved the higher par holes. however, those that require the ultimate challenge to give a course a premium rating might not find that here

Other Thoughts:

Flat Creek is an awesome experience. The terrain in this secluded area in the Hill Country northwest of Austin is beautiful and excellent for disc golf. If you take the disc golf entrance (don't turn on Travis Peak Trl, go further to a left turn into the disc golf parking) then you'll see the practice basket on the right and the pro shop straight ahead across the creek (basket 14 is next to the creek there). After paying your fee ($20, or $15 for PDGA members) at the proshop, the first tee is around the corner behind the bistro.

The front 9 plays in a loop on the north end of the property. Hole 3 is the first par 4 and gives a great taste of what is to come. Tree-framed tee shot, rolling elevation in the fairway, OB pond on the right. Holes 6 and 7 are also great par 4s (for the longs) that have a permanent short and long basket (par 3 for the short basket on hole 6). I especially liked hole 7, that has a tall tree line separating the first and second halves of the fairway and a green up on an elevated area. Hole 8 is a long par 5 that forces you to decide whether you can clear the creek on the first shot or not. The second shot is through a long open field with one large tree to beat and the approach to the green is across the creek and uphill. The short but very wooded hole 9 finishes up the front 9.

After a pit stop at the proshop/tasting room/patio, the back 9 starts off with another par 5 that has a tough tee shot, crosses the creek, and has a very dangerous green with a drop-off toward the creek. Hole 11 is short but very tight, Hole 12 is a fun, downhill ace run, and Hole 13 is a deceptively difficult par 3 with a low ceiling on the second half of the fairway and a well-guarded green. Hole 14 is a straightforward par 4 but the danger is going down into the creek/pond behind the basket if you're long on your second shot. Hole 16 is a really tough par 4 with a tight, left to right tee shot and the green next to the pond. Hole 17 is a fun, short shot through a copse of trees with a low ceiling. I couldn't get my backhand through there after several tries, I think a RHFH is the better line. Finally ending on the epic par 5 hole 18 is a great finish. You must carry the water twice to reach the peninsula green that has a single tree blocking a putt from a short left lie, a likely lie if you're a shorter arm going for the eagle (me, but at least I got my 4!).

The course plays pretty differently from the shorts and the longs. As an intermediate player rated below 900, I shot a 52 from the shorts and a 69 from the longs, if I remember correctly. The short layout has a generous par and nearly half the holes are must get birdies for an experienced player. It is an easy red layout. The longs definitely require distance to score well. It's a blue layout that an AM1 or Open player should be able to shred on a good day.

Rating this course was a challenge. I played the shorts and then the longs and I was underwhelmed after the first round. Definitely lots of fun and interesting holes but overall it's pretty short and not as challenging as you might expect. I was much more impressed after playing the longs but there are still a number of easy holes and holes 4 and 5 still stuck out as very bland. Flat Creek is a half step below most of the other 4.5 ratings I've given but it seems a half step above most of the 4.0 ratings I've given; a true 4.25 rating. The awesome par 4 and 5 holes made me give it the bump.

The five par 4s and three par 5s are what really make the course. Make the drive out here to play the longs and enjoy the brilliantly designed longer holes. You can see that the course is conceived with those holes in mind and there are some great par 3s along the way too. The amenities on the course and at the winery are great, the views are spectacular, and the golf is a ton of fun.

Best of both worlds 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 10, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

BEAUTIFUL course. I just kept taking pictures because every time I turned around there was a picturesque view. Rolling hills, vineyards, trees, flowers, everything looked great. This course is well designed for the most part. Placement on tee shots is demanded and the longer holes require at least 2 good shots to earn the birdie. There is plenty of elevation change throughout the course to keep things interesting.

I love the MachX baskets. The long tee boxes were concrete and the short tee boxes were rubber. Both sets of tees played great, although some of the short tees were very short. The signage was great with diagrams of the hole, par, and distance. Course map was posted behind the pro shop. Scorecards are available at the pro shop with a map on it, along with distance, and pars.

Trash cans placed throughout course.

The course figure eights back at the parking area/pro shop between the front 9 and back 9. That makes for a great opportunity to pit stop for water, snacks, and restrooms in the air conditioned wine tasting room.

There is a pro shop with a small supply of discs for sale. They have their own logo stamped on a few discs that you can purchase. They also have discs for rent for those that don't have their own discs to play with. You lose it, you buy it, is the policy though. There are a few opportunities to lose discs too. The pro shop also manages a lost and found, so you could potentially get any lost discs back eventually.

The biggest "pro" is that you can bring your lady friend to a vineyard/winery AND you get to play some disc golf too!

Cons:

The first time I played here it was overcast so the heat wasn't too big of a problem. The 2nd time, was a sunny, 90+ degree day and the heat was a major negative factor. Much of the course is out in the open without shade to stay cool under.

There were several short holes, especially on the short tees/short pins layout. They were fun and made for several ace runs, but they were a bit out of place amongst all of the par 4's and 5's. I'd prefer to see more challenging 2's on this course and not so many easy 2's.

You can't bring in any outside alcoholic beverages since they have wine for sale.

For me, I'll only play here once in a blue moon since it is about 4 hours from home. Because of that, the $15 charge ($20 if you aren't a PDGA member) isn't bad for me. That would be too high of a price to play here often, in my opinion. They do offer a $60 annual membership to receive unlimited play for one calendar year. If you knew you were going to play here enough, the membership would be an awesome option! Members also receive discounted tickets to select events throughout the year and 5% off wine by the bottle.

The grass was taller on holes 15-17 than the rest of the course when I played. I narrowly avoided stepping on a snake on hole 17 because it blended in so well to the taller grass.

I typically throw several forehands in a disc golf rounds on the courses that I'm used to. I found myself only throwing a handful of forehands in the 3 rounds that I played (shorts and longs). More often a long turnover shot was more conducive for the distance needed and the shape of the shot. I think that would translate to a lack of lefty shots, but I wasn't looking for the lefty shots either.

A few baskets are placed precariously close to drop offs that lead to water or are placed very near water, so there are multiple places where putting a disc in the drink is a possible outcome. However, I didn't lose any discs and never felt like I was put in a situation where I didn't have the option to keep my disc safe and still score well. The water was very clear and shallow in some places, so getting your disc back wouldn't be too difficult.

UPDATE:
I played this course in June of 2017 when I initially wrote this review. Upon playing again in July of 2018, my opinion of it has changed slightly. I gave it a 4.5 initially. Updating that to a 4, but really, I'd go with about 3.75 if that was an option. The course was not as well maintained this summer and the water that was there last summer is mostly all dried up. The rough was very ROUGH and there are places you can easily lose a disc unless you are willing to go rummaging through dense foliage laced with bull nettle and poison ivy.

Last summer my wife just walked along with me and threw a few shots along the way. This summer, she played from the short "tees", at least that was the plan. We had forgotten that several holes don't have a short tee, but rather a short basket position. That left us playing to different areas and not able to enjoy the round fully together. We had to separate and meet back up at certain places. I wasn't a big fan of changing up the layout midway through from short and long tees, to short and long baskets, even last year when I played it for the first time. I was definitely not a fan of it this time through with having to separate from my wife on several occasions. This is defintely a glaring design flaw in a course that I would imagine many couples play together as it is on a winery.

The heat, combined with the rough, unkept places on the course, and having to split up on several occasions, made this 2nd experience here much unlike the first great experience the previous summer.

Other Thoughts:

My wife and I played here on the way back up to Fort Worth from Austin. So glad that we did! This course is beautiful, challenging, and fun! My wife loves vineyards and wine tasting, so this was the best of both worlds for us both. We took advantage of the "Wine and Disc" package, that was only $15 for PDGA members. That got me greens fees for the day and got my wife a wine tasting. We ended up buying 3 bottles of wine which got us another free wine tasting so we both were able to sample the award-winning wines. There was also a $35 dollar option that included greens fees, a pizza, and a wine flight.

I played one round from the shorts and one round from the longs; and played them on the same go around to get the full feel for what the course had to offer.

We actually ran into John Houck after we finished the front 9 and got to talk with him for a little while about the course. He just happened to be there at the time that we were playing which was a fortunate coincidence. John introduced us to the owner who was a very nice guy.

You want to go to the 2nd entrance to park for disc golf.

Great variety of pars. (You need precise shots to look at birdies, and great shots to challenge the longer 4's and 5's. Great risk and reward. No dumb holes. Great teepads, signage and catchers. Lots of shade for those hot Texas summer days.

Cons:

Couple of areas have really rough rough. Can't play it more often.
